Staff retention and engagement
The retention of staff is a key issue for the NHS. In Improving Staff Retention: A Guide For Employers NHS Employers found a key learning point to emerge from their work with organisations is that improving staff retention should be approached as a transformational rather than a transactional process. Embedding a culture of transformational change helped focus on what was important to patients and staff. A case study at East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust looked at Improving new starter turnover as a high proportion of staff were leaving the trust within their first year. The trust improved the overall on-boarding experience, including starting induction before day one in the role and introducing an online portal for new starters. Turnover was improved by 18.2%.
