NHS Lanarkshire Allied Health Profession - Independent Living Programme (AILP) Engagement Event
Friday, 13th November 2015
Local Perspective On the National Delivery Plan and Aspirations For The Future
Peter McCrossan
Director for AHP, NHS Lanarkshire
13th November 2015
Allied Health Professions
AHPs in Lanarkshire • The Allied Health Professions in NHS Lanarkshire were
brought together under the Nursing Midwifery and Allied Health Professional (NMAHP) Directorate in 2010.
• Although part of the NMAHP Directorate, AHPs are a distinct group of individual professions who apply their expertise to diagnose, treat and rehabilitate people of all ages across health, education and social care.
• Committed Workforce Average Sickness absence rate for April to Sept 15, 3.2%
AHP National Delivery Plan
• Professional leadership to drive innovation and delivery
• Reshaping care and enabling independent living
• Improving health and wellbeing
• Supporting early years
• Maximising workforce engagement and development
• Driving improvement : delivering sustainable quality
NHS Lanarkshire AHP staffing profile
What have we achieved?
• AHP dedicated resource within the emergency departments, across all acute sites. Physiotherapist within A&E examining patient OOH and weekends.
• Defining complex patients across older people and adults to support them where possible to live independently in their home, this has been driven via the RSCOP agenda.
• Implementation of the National footcare guideline’s.
• AHPs ask people about their work status, as an essential component of their consultation.
Achievements Continued 1 • Delivering an integrated falls and fracture pathway
with a community integrated falls pathway in place across Lanarkshire.
• Greater emphasis on Physical exercise
• Maximising the engagement and contribution of the workforce We have tested the use of the nursing triangulation workforce tool in older people services (acute & community) - now being picked up for AHPs nationally.
Achievements Continued (2)
• We have tested 7 days access to Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy. Due to a re-working of the on-call Physiotherapy budget this issue has mainly been overcome within the physiotherapy service for each of the acute sites.
• In Radiography and Spiritual care we have a 7 day 24 hour services on all three sites.
Achievements Continued 3
• Completed the development of the AHP HCSW role to enhance skills, share competencies, and enable targeting of therapist resources more effectively.
• The requirement for a 70% shift of resource from
acute sites to community premises. (Lanarkshire is currently on this target, and is aspiring to achieving 80% of all AHPs providing their interventions within the community.
Rehabilitation Technology Pilot
Access to services
• Access to the majority of the services is through either a self-referral mechanism, access via GP, or other Health professionals is also available.
• Only Radiography and Dietetics do not take direct referrals from the public.
Where to next?
We Will Continue To Focus On
• MSK – 4 weeks target for Physiotherapy, Podiatry,
Occupational Therapy and Orthotics
• Consider how AHP can support workforce changes
– especially in the medical workforce
• Move as many AHPs out of acute sites into
primary care as is possible
• Making best use of technology
What we want from you today
• To help explore new opportunities
• Generate new/ other ideas
• Build on existing partnerships and develop new links
• This is your chance to inform local and national priorities
