It might be surprising, however, if
you’ve heard of the relatively new

a course throwing fl ying discs at
baskets or targets in as few strokes
as possible, and the mention of it
didn’t bring a smile to your face.

Some advice on giving advice to newer disc golfers. Remember the acronym K.I.S.S. (“Keep It Simple Stupid”). When you give too much information they will retain little and eventually tune you out. Refer to disc golf rule #1– “Have fun.” Allow them to learn at their own pace and when they are ready, they will seek you out. I am available for 1-minute putting lessons.
While on the subject of advice, I am grateful for the news and weather casters who advise us when it’s 100 degrees out to dress lightly, stay out of the sun, drink plenty of water and to avoid doing anything strenuous. If it wasn’t for them I’d be riding my bike in mid-afternoon with a wool hat, gloves, a scarf and a parka on while avoiding drinking any water.
Our newly planted trees could sure use a drink. I’m calling on you to help us. Bring some water... I’ll be happy to help you water them!

Treasurer’s Report by Dave Prue #9360 Disc Sales: All proceeds from the disc sales at Sedgley Woods go directly back to the course. As a group we have raised enough money in the past few years to: expand to 27 holes, sponsor numerous tournaments and improve our course condi-tions overall. Ten rubber tee pads have been purchased again and blue #10, blue #14 and red #22 were installed recently.
Thursday Doubles Ace Pot: If no ace is hit, half of the collected money is donated back to the course and the other half rolls to the next week. FSW guaran-tees a $25 minimum and the $250 maximum has not been reached in years (because we are forced to play blue tees too often).
On 5/13 Paul Wharton aced blue #17 with a Wizard disc to win one of our biggest Thursday ace pots in months, $177. Two weeks later Barry Noakes also aced blue #17 for $44. On 7/15 Digger aced blue #15 and won $106. On 8/12 Ty Parrish aced blue #15 with a Buzz disc and won $43 and one week later Alex Caldwell skip aced blue #5 with a Wraith and won $31.
$336 Monthly Ace Pot Hit!
Jason Bates aced blue #13 and Alex Caldwell aced blue #17 during the June monthly, they split the monthly ace pot of $336!

Scheduled Monthly Clean-Up Tags move to 1:00PM every 2nd Saturday in 2011.
The Friends of Sedgley Woods have declared the 2nd Saturday of each month to be regularly scheduled for volunteer course maintenance from 8am - 12pm. Tags will start 1 hour later than normal at 1pm on these monthly work days. This change does not take effect until January.
We hope to see all of you out at the course early to help with keeping the course in shape. Beverages are commonly provided for volunteers. Theres always something to be done!
It’s a beautiful Saturday morning in the fall. The leaves are changing color, players are milling about, warming up for a tags round that starts at noon. The grass is freshly cut and several new teeboxes were installed in the previous weeks. This is a beautiful scene and happens almost every Saturday (and Thursday, and Sunday.) As a matter of fact, there are around 156 Weekly Tag Challenge rounds a year. 156!!!!! All for the cost of $20 yearly. That means that tag is costing you less than 13 cents a round; what a deal! Now, what is wrong with this picture?
We all enjoy Sedgley Woods. We enjoy the golf, the comra-derie, the little slice-of-green in the middle of Philly’s hustle and bustle. Some of us volunteer to come out and make Sedgley a better place. Whether it is Dave Prue, Stash, Rome etc. selling discs to generate funds for the club, or Stu and G-Man coming and performing much needed mainte-nance on the course, or Woodsy and Mike Klein running tags, or Ben and Ebush grilling on holidays. We have some very dedicated volunteers that really enjoy giving back to the course. This is a very common theme around most courses that I’ve traveled too. Almost every course is maintained and improved by a group of club members or volunteers. Again, what is wrong with this picture?
In my opinion, most of these other clubs seem to have roughly the same number of active volunteers as FSW. Some have quite a few more. What no other club has (as far as I know) is the HUGE number of people that belong to the club or use the course. Sedgley has one of the largest clubs of any course and has to see more individual players than just about any course in the world. Now, imagine that scene described in the first paragraph if FSW had even roughly
the same percentage of volunteers per capita as other courses and clubs. Imagine everything we could accom-plish. New tee signs? Teeboxes on every tee? Downed limbs cleaned up within hours of falling? No trash on an urban course? Grass mowed two or three times a month? A NEW COURSE?!?!?!?
This is a reminder to everyone. If you are holding this publication you care about Sedgley Woods. It is likely that you just spent 12.8 cents to play a round of tags run by a volunteer. Please, consider volunteering yourself. Even if it is picking up an empty plastic bag and filling it with trash during your round, every little bit helps. We have a new web-site to communicate cleanup activities and events. We have a board sponsored initiative to have a regular cleanup day the second saturday of every month. We have board meet-ings at the beginning of every month that all friends of the woods are encouraged to attend. Please, lets make Sedgley the best it can be. Lets force the Parks and Recreation department to recognize our outstanding contribution and let them know we need a new course.

“5 minutes until 10 minutes!”By: Dave Myers
“5 minutes ‘til 10 minutes!” These words will live in infamy and are bellowed through out the year before each tag round by one of Sedgley’s own, Mike Klein.
As most of you know (the cognoscenti), a new tag rule was installed last year which requires tag participants to sign the tag sheet and hang their tag on the tag board 10 minutes before the so called start time. This helps speed the process up for the tag czars when filling/shuffling out cards and assigning tee positions. It also attempts to install a sense of responsibil-ity (I use that word very loosely) in each tag holder by showing up on time. Yes, we all know that occurrences come up from time to time that we have no control of and it’s just impossible to make it to the course on time. Have no fear, you’ll still be able to play, but you’ll be at the back of the pack and not in tag sequential order. When this rule was first enforced there was some friction to start, but as players are getting use to the change things are working out quite nicely.
For those of you who don’t know Mike, trust me, you will soon be introduced to him in one way or another, formally or informally by the sound of his radiant booming voice. Mike is the short, stocky character that runs the tag show along with Dave Woods. In my eyes, he is part of the foundation that is Sedgley. Mike has stepped up to take the tag reigns this past year in Woodsy’s absence and has done a formidable job.
Also known as “Big Mike Klein”, “BMK” or “Iron Man Mike” (due to his undisputed 151 out of 156 tag rounds last year), Mike has improved his game over the short time I’ve known him to be at a very competitive level. His determina-tion and participation in all things disc golf has led to his stellar play and fierce competitiveness. But I believe Mike is much more then that. He is truly a down to earth, genuine type of guy and just a great human being.
My hats off to you Mike, keep up the great job in the tag endeavors, improving your disc golf game and being the stand up genuine guy that you are. Your thankless hours of volun-teering haven’t gone unnoticed.
Looking forward to the next “5 minutes until 10 minutes” call.

Just flew into Philly... feelin really chilly, straight up cold down
2 my bone... Till Sunday,I’ll be bitten by the Clipper... Quite
a bit nipply, I’ll be pullin’ up my zipper, Its windy... Man its
colder than December, its January... I’ll bet every Witches tit
this minute is shivering... I feel the freeze, an eight ball inside a
snow ball, its numbing... all at the same time, kinda pleasing...
cause its still good to be home tonight... and as soon as Its on,
Im on the first hot flight.
Just flew into Philly... spring sprung and flung the plane up
and down in the sky as April showers shatters winters grip
with thundering electric strips from above... humid jetway
and I cant wait to play... See I’ve waited... long... longer
than ever before... through the Snowiest winter on record,
and my loved one lost... now its time to revive my soul... as
soon as the mud dries its time to roll... and throw.
Just flew into Philly ..... the walk from the wing to the whip
dripping and sweaty... switch to tank top, eelin’ really hungry
...I 95 wrapped around Center City... think I’ll gooo... for
eggplant parm and spaghetti, at Angelino’s... its still early
yet, I’ll wait and see... Yo, I know one thing will happen
most definatly... even though I may have been away more
than a week... as I drive through these Philly streets... before
my doorsteps... I’ll reach... Sedgley... and I will stop... and
breathe... and thank God... for these trees, and this grass, and
these ravines... and the fact it gets better with the friends I
see... and dealing with the strange feelings of not wanting to
leave... but I will.. cause thats half the fun... of feeling like
one of Sedgley’s prodigal sons.

Just flew into Philly ..... the walk from the wing to the whip
dripping and sweaty... switch to tank top, eelin’ really hungry
...I 95 wrapped around Center City... think I’ll gooo... for
eggplant parm and spaghetti, at Angelino’s... its still early
yet, I’ll wait and see... Yo, I know one thing will happen
most definatly... even though I may have been away more
than a week... as I drive through these Philly streets... before
my doorsteps... I’ll reach... Sedgley... and I will stop... and
breathe... and thank God... for these trees, and this grass, and
these ravines... and the fact it gets better with the friends I
see... and dealing with the strange feelings of not wanting to
leave... but I will.. cause thats half the fun... of feeling like
one of Sedgley’s prodigal sons.

Impressive Feats at Sedgley Woods
Martin:Coef gets a 2 on 27 red!!! I wasn’t in the group but his 2nd shot came from behind the rocks in the fairway...
Anyone think there is a more impressive feat at Sedgley?
Phil Ross:Yes, me, I do. Namely, JGB’s 16 under par for 18 holes in a tag round is a more impressive feat at Sedgeley.
One good drive coupled with a lucky upshot (fairway ace) is good, especially on 27 Red, but it cannot compare with 2 pars and 16 birdies over a standard, 18-hole round in “live” competition.
Seriously, shooting in the 30’s in singles... think about that for a moment, and it far outshines Coef’s single deuce - even on Sedgeley’s toughest hole.
P.S. If memory serves, it included a stretch of 15 straight birdies from hole 3 through 17!! No, it wasn’t all blue, either. I recall it was Red 1-6, Blue 7-12, Yellow 13-18.
The red tee on 5 was the still old tee (just north by northwest of blue tee on 5).
I wasn’t a live witness either. I showed up for 2x’s post tags, but I still remember it as if I were in on it.
Bradway (or FSW in general, Please back me up on this one, particularly the 15 straight birdies. That feat goes down as the most impressive one performed at Sedgeley.
JG Bradway:Yeap, 15 straight, 3-17.
...and while that was a great round, I think I had a hotter day a Sedgeley.
In the height of my practice days I would take 5 Avairs and play the back nine throwing each disc to completion on each hole. Essentially playing 45 holes of disc golf. I once shot a 36 under in one of those sessions with no two’s on 12 [5 pars]. That’s only 4 pars in 40 tee shots if you don’t counthole 12.
Of course there where no witnesses and the whole competi-tion thing probablymakes the 16 down a greater feat, but it was still quite the lunch hour.
Younger days....
Jason Coef hit a fairway ace to card the first ever 2 on 27 red.

Disc Golf Catches on All Over PennsylvaniaBy: Joe Petrucci, 4/29/2010
If you haven’t heard of disc golf, it wouldn’t necessarily be surprising. It might be surpris-ing, however, if you’ve heard of the relatively new sport, in which players traverse a course throwing flying discs at baskets or targets in as few strokes as possible, and the mention of it didn’t bring a smile to your face. That’s how Philadelphia’s John Deusler, who serves as a marketing director for the Professional Disc Golf Association, illustrates the sport’s ultimate impact and the impression it leaves on beginners and pros alike.
“What we’re finding is it invokes this feeling of happiness, independence and freedom,” says Duesler, who’s been involved with the sport for nearly a quarter-century. “With the state of the world, disc golf offers a comfortable refuge that people really enjoy.”
Chances are many of those smiles originated in Pennsylvania, home to 75 disc golf courses (ninth-most in the U.S.) and to the first layout on the East Coast--legendary Sedgley Woods in Philadel-phia’s mammoth Fairmount Park. Sedgley, though, is much more than an offbeat landmark for the City of Brotherly Love. It seeded disc golf in Pennsylvania and from Florida to Maine, and the
Keystone State is now known as home to some of the world’s most beautiful and challenging courses. In 2005, Lehigh Valley played host to the PGDA World Championships at a host of its renowned courses. Roughly half of the state’s courses have been built in the last five years on the backs of grassroots efforts like the one Stroudsburg’s Chris Cioni led to build the first course in Monroe County, nestled in a scenic, sacred parcel that’s a couple long drives from the Delaware River.
“Nockamixon State Park was rated the most challenging course in the history of the World Championships and the Lehigh Parkway course used for the final is often referred to as one of the most scenic,” says Duesler, who served as tourna-ment director. “We had close to 3,000 fans on the course for the finals and I haven’t seen as ener-getic and boisterous gallery since.”
All that fanfare and the sport’s growth throughout the state isn’t possible without Sedgley, where disc golf truly starts and begins in PA and beyond.
Sedgley was born when Penn State University biochemistry grad and avid Ultimate Frisbee player Jim Powers returned to Philly and formed the Philadelphia Frisbee Club in 1976. At about the same time Ed Headrick, formerly of Frisbee maker Wham-O, and his son Ken were developing a Frisbee-catching device that was eventually installed in the first and oldest permanent disc golf course in Pasadena, California. When the PFC hosted the Philadelphia Frisbee Cham-pionships in early 1977, Headrick and Wham-O were so impressed with the
event, held at Fairmount’s Belmont Plateau, that they donated 18 baskets and tee signs for a disc golf course there. After a few months they settled on a site in East Fairmount Park that was largely unused at the time and located on the doorstep of the city’s distressed Strawberry Mansion neighborhood.

More than 30 years later, about three dozen school children participate in an after-school disc golf program. The Friends of Sedgley (FOS), a non-profit organization that has preserved, improved and promoted the course for 20 years, runs the program. Last weekend, FOS organized the planting of 30 trees through a grant from the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society. The group also publishes a quarterly newsletter--“Nice Up,” in reference to a successful shot at the basket--that feels more like a subscription magazine.
While the sport has long been associated with hippie culture, a trip to Sedgley or any course throughout the state indicates the sport has out-grown its organic roots and moved closer to the mainstream. The beauty of it, says Philadelphia’s John DiSciascio, is you never know who you’re going to meet out on the course.
“All the colleges here have helped grow the sport immeasurably,” says DiSciascio, Sedgley’s unof-ficial PR man and one of its biggest advocates. “I don’t think Ben Franklin played, but (college kids) took it back to their homes and helped make it popular.”
Like many others who drove or walked by the strange round formation of chains that constitutes a disc golf basket in their early days, DiSciascio thought perhaps they were birdfeeders. Others thought they were barbecues. DiSciascio soon figured it out and fell in love with the sport, and when vandals stole nine baskets--the sport’s most expensive piece of equipment--he and a group of dedicated players formed FOS to raise funds to replace the baskets in 1990. When FOS eventually found the stolen baskets, the group donated them to other fledgling courses in the region.
That spirit is alive and well today at Sedgley. On a sunny, early Monday afternoon in April, the parking lot is almost half-full but it’s still slow, says DiSciascio, who is set up on the scene wdith two FOS members, a couple of boxes of discs to sell and info on upcoming events. As school gets out, things start to pick up. Nate Krahn, PA’s state champion in 2008, is just starting a round with a friend. Talk among regulars shifts toward upcom-ing events--there are tournaments most every weekend and a host of leagues and other events that draw diverse crowds.
It’s groups like FOS that has made the sport stick statewide, says Chris Kemmerer of the Pennsyl-vania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR). DCNR devotes a page on its Web site to the 11 courses at its parks and Kem-merer says the state is happy to support this kind of recreation, especially when it helps staff with the enormous task of maintaining its parks.

“We’ll chip in and help them and buy a tee or mow some of the trails of they do a big event, but the day-to-day maintenance of that course is really done by them, with us every once in awhile look-ing in,” says Kemmerer, a programming specialist.
“We support these grassroots efforts if the park manager or other experts say we can do it and the community wants it.”
That’s similar to how things played out for Cioni, who recently learned upgrades for River’s Edge Disc Golf Course in Shawnee on Delaware were approved by local township supervisors.
Cioni started playing disc golf in 2002 and quickly learned there weren’t any courses within 25 miles of his home in Stroudsburg. When he was approached by the Eastern Monroe Regional Park Com-mission to construct a nine-hole course at the former site of the Shawnee Stables, he jumped up at the opportunity. He rounded up local businesses to donate materials and friends to help design the course.
Cioni used a portable basket to test different hole loca-tions and utilized the PDGA’s course design tutorial. When the first six holes were laid out in 2005, he knew he had built
a beautiful beginner-friendly layout that was chal-lenging enough for more experienced players. Less than a year later an 18-hole layout was built a few miles away at Yetter Park in Stroudsburg.
“I know personally a lot of people that were intro-duced to the sport by playing at River’s Edge and it turned into a passion for some of them,” says Cioni. “The area in which we live is perfect for the sport.”
It also seems to be perfect for ski resorts across the state who are looking to provide four-season recreation to increase revenues. Indiana University of Pennsylvania constructed a disc golf course on a former ski slope on its property about 10 years ago. Duesler is helping install a course at Blue Mountain in Palmerton, Carbon County that expects to open on May 22 and another is expected to open at Camelback in Tannersville, Monroe County. Unlike most courses, there will be a charge to play at these spots, but they will look to provide more than the average walk in the park.
“This is the moment,” says Duesler. “Right now we’re seeing the evolution of the sport spilling into non-disc golf interests. We’re seeing corpo-rate interests trying to get involved with the sport. Build it and they will come.”

STRAWBeRRY MANSION: Friends oF sedgley Woods Fight Pollution and CrimeBy CaITlIN BUrNS aND THoMaS DoUGHErTy
Never before has a group been named so aptly. The Friends of Sedgley
Woods are truly friends in the most sincere sense of the word. “All of us
here are good friends and we come together from all walks of life. From
the homeless to millionaires, we are here in Fairmount Park to play a
sport we love, celebrate together and make sure this park is here for future
players,” says Derrick “Turtle” Eason, a regular disc golfer. Most of the
regulars at the Sedgley course have nicknames and the jovial, joking tone
among the players resembles that of a pep rally more than a sporting
competition.
The course at Sedgley Woods is located in East Fairmount Park and is the
second oldest course in the United States. Disc golf uses Frisbee-like discs
that players use to aim for the holes, which are metal cages.
One of the founding members of The Friends of
Sedgley Woods is Paul “Old Goat” Fein, who has been
building, maintaining and playing this course since
its inception in 1977. “This place looks like a desert
compared to when we first started this all those years
ago,” say Fein.
While the tone among the players may be light-
hearted, the mission is serious business. “We do
everything here except for haul the garbage away,”
says Gerome “Rome” Vernon, oversight director for
The Friends of Sedgley. The group even provides the
trash bags for the numerous waste baskets around the
course. “The bags that The Fairmount Park Commis-
sion gave us weren’t strong enough, so we buy our
own. This is an all volunteer effort and the group
remains self-sufficient,” says Treasurer, David Prue.

The group has many different ways to maintain its coffers
ranging from selling disc golf discs at the beginning of the
course, to selling individual slices of pizza. “All this money
goes right back to maintaining this course,” says Fein. While
the group now are the proud stewards of a gorgeous and
world renowned course, it wasn’t always like this.
Many of the members spoke harshly about the early days of
the course, mainly because of the crime and litter problems
that plagued the area. “The group is great for this commu-
nity. Before we were here the ground was covered in coke
vials and hookers walked the street outside the course openly,
but now it’s a clean place you can take your family and have
a great time and feel safe,” says Eason.
As well as a place to have fun and enjoy the surroundings, the
course is host to national tournaments and internationally
known. “I have played all around the world and when I say I
am from Sedgley, people know about it,” says Fein.
Recently, The Friends of Sedgley teamed up with the Fair-
mount Park Commission, The Horticultural Society and City
Year to plant 39 trees. “The Friends do a lot to help maintain
the health of the park like replanting efforts and cleaning
up debris after big storms come through. We also have the
Adopt-A-Hole Program where an individual or group can
be assigned a hole to clean and make sure the hole is play-
able,” say Eason. The Friends of Sedgley hold the health and
well-being of the park higher than even the playability. “We
are here as guests and, as guests, we have a duty to leave the
place better than we found it,” says Fein.
This sense of community and responsibility is immediately
evident when approaching the course. Greeting you on your
way to the first hole, besides a group of players palling
around, is the lost and found where new players can borrow
a disc or two for their round and return them when they are
finished. The pile is a heap of brightly colored plastic discs
that embodies the mindset The Friends of Sedgley hope to
foster.
The Friends of Sedgley also publish a disc golf magazine on
a quarterly basis with issues coming out in January, April,
July and October. The magazine entitled, NiceUp, has sec-
tions written by people who regularly play the course. Many
of the articles in the most recent issue concern cleaning up
the park, a call for more volunteers, results and pictures from
recent tournaments as well as reports from different courses
around the country.
While the group’s main mission is to maintain and preserve
the course at Sedgley Woods, there is a camaraderie among
the participants that is palpable. This may have much to do
with the relatively newness of the sport, but it also might be
attributed to the attitude of those who chose to participate.
“These are just good people who want to have fun and take
a walk in the woods,” says Eason. Others like Fein talk about
the sport as a taking back of the property from drug deal-
ers and other nefarious types. “A while back my son was 12
or 13 and I was watching him play and, all of a sudden, it
dawned on me that we have created an oasis here that will,
hopefully, be around for future players to enjoy,” says Fein.

tions written by people who regularly play the course. Many
of the articles in the most recent issue concern cleaning up
the park, a call for more volunteers, results and pictures from
recent tournaments as well as reports from different courses
around the country.

NICE UP! On The RoadNICE UP! On The Road
Stu Straw, Tim Gray and Dave Prue drove to just north of Ann Arbor, Michigan in mid-June for a 5-day disc golf road trip. Stu qualified for the tourney while Tim and Dave were simply along for the adventure.
Day 1: Driving in the rain for 5 hours we exited the PA
turnpike for lunch but rain prevented us from playing Deer
Lakes DGC near Pittsburgh, PA so we drove into Ohio looking
for sunshine. We found Hudson Springs DGC in Hudson, OH
located just minutes from the highway. The front 9 was very
easy and short, the back nine was considerably much longer
and was better golf. We arrived in Michigan 12 hours after
our journey began.
Day 2: Stu got registered and played a few of the harder
holes on the Toboggan course in Kensington Metro Park.
With a #1 rating by a variety of PDGA course designers
and pros, it may be the greatest challenge in disc golf. At
8824 feet, this par 62 course has a mix of large elevation
changes and tight fairways that will test every shot in your
bag. Later in the day we played Hudson Mills (original
course) which was one of my old favorite courses ever
played due to its immaculate course conditions including
24 holes, cement tees, carved fairways with cut grass and
rough with a great mixture of open and wooded holes. CJ’s
county store along the way offers 4,000 discs for sale and
a terrific selection of beef jerky.

Day 3: Stu plays stellar golf in round 1 up until hole 18 which
he double bogeys for a total of 65 placing him the middle of
the pack, 148 golfers total. We then head to Independence
Red Hawk DGC located in Whitmore Lake, MI. The entry
fee of $9 per car seems steep until you play the course; it
also “keeps the riff raft out”. It was like a mini DG country
club. It has a challenging layout, playing through woods and
fields with a mix of narrow and
wide open fairways including
several massive holes and few
with water hazards. Very well
marked new signs at each tee,
and had direction signs to
next tee where needed.
Day 4: On the hottest day of
the year so far in Michigan
along with humidity, Stu
shoots a 6 over par 68. He
drops to 102nd place. We
then go back to Hudson Mills
to play the ‘The Monster’
which is a second course in
the same park, hole 16 is
1038 feet long!
Day 5: Stu shoots under par for the first time in 2 years
playing the Toboggan course; a 60 (rated at 992) places him
in 74th place for the tourney, 10 spots better than his finish
last year. The same morning Tim and Dave play Kensington’s
other course named Black Locust, it has 18 re-designed
holes plus 9 new ones for a total of 27. The tourney is won
by a teenager David Wiggins Jr, 4 of the top 5 golfers were
17 years old or less proving
this event is a young man’s
game. We immediately hit
the road heading back east,
4.5 hours later we are at Deer
Lakes DGC with 2 hours of
sunlight which is just enough
time for a final round of golf
on this road trip. After 1:00a
we exit the PA turnpike and
I get home at 2:00a for 3.5
hours of sleep before work on
a Monday morning. Monday
was hell physically but so
much worth it.
FyI, renting a mini-van was the best decision we made, plenty of room for 3 golfers and our gear made the 1,500 round
trip much easier. Thanks to Stu and Tim for letting me tag along, it was a wonderful disc golf road trip.

Imagine playing a course that’s tougher and with more elevation than Winthrop Gold during the
uSDGC and doing it not once but twice each day in 95 degree heat. That’s what the hearty souls
had to endure to complete the Challenge on the highest combination of SSA courses ever played
in 4 rounds of PDGA competition.
NICE UP! On The RoadNICE UP! On The Road
It started at Iron Hill. This new gem, almost fully polished, was created by designer Steve Winchester and a dedicated Dela-ware crew. The gold level tees had been completed this spring and this was the big test. As designed, this par 72 weaving thru majestic hardwoods (only two holes of daylight) deliv-ered the 72 SSA both rounds as planned. After 4 hours in the morning and a much appreciated lunch included, we did it all again. After Day 1, Nate Krahn and Becky Sonnheim lead the Open divisions. Nate's 64 in the AM unofficially rated about 1040 was matched by Steve Brinster in the PM who had to rally from a tough first round playing with Winchester and myself. Jim Myers and Lewis Graninger rallied in the after-noon to lead MPM and MPG. The amateurs played Carousel the first day so their scores are on a different layout.
Steve Brinster drives on the daunting Iron Hill 17 at over 800 ft thru the maze. Day 2 was just as hot but on a much more open course at Carousel designed by top pro Mike Moser. What a huge and well groomed complex the horse owners were willing to share with us. It was two miles to drive around back to the 10th tee where I got to start play with insider Amy Moser providing guidance and helpful course nuggets during the round. Mike used the elevation, ponds and scattered wooded areas in creative ways for another gold level experience. After a 71 SSA morning round he "eased off" in the afternoon and made four holes just a little easier for a 69 SSA layout. Jim Myers playing his upshot on the par 4, hole 2 with water danger on the drive. Lesli Brinster completing hole 5 located on a steep slope tucked in an open-ing in the woods after driving up and over a hill from the tee.
Tyler Horne had the hot hand with a 63 in the morning to make up a few on Krahn but it wasn't enough. Brinster rallied with the hot score of 61 in the afternoon to continue moving back up the board into a 4th place finish. Krahn played solid all day to take the iron man... I mean Challenge title winning a cool $1145 from Mike Moser below.
Becky Sonnheim lead wire-to-wire and picked up $300 in win-ning the 4-woman Open field. She's so happy here, could it mean a trip to Disney World?
If you're a competitive disc golfer visiting this area, you're going to want to check out these courses... but maybe not play both gold layouts the same day!

NICE UP! On The RoadNICE UP! On The Road
I left on my 2010 road trip one day early to avoid the 100+ degree day in Philly, when I got to Moundsville, WV (just south of Wheeling) at The Black Course in Grand Vue Park it was only 93 on their mountainside course. I met the local
“course guide” Paul as arranged through DGcoursereview.com and he provided me a tour by walking with me while I played the course. This proved to be a tremendous help since the tees were very hard to find and the rough was thick in places. The challenge this course presents can’t be understated, consider the 100 foot elevation drops, a 1,008 foot hole #18 down a HUGE slope, up and down sloping hills, several mandos, wind and some difficult par 3’s and 7 par 5’s! Bring your hiking shoes and a camera, the views are truly spectacular at this park. Within a few years this will become a ‘destination’ course. Rated 4 stars now on its way to 5 in the future.
The next day in Cincinnati, OH my next stop was at “The Nati Disc Golf” shop located at the Mt Airy DGC, their shop in the park had thousands of discs and apparel for sale. I took the rest of the day off from playing for some site seeing with a local, my sister. Day 3 took us to Louisville, KY and Charlie Vettiner DGC which was well designed despite numerous blind shots off the cement tees. Up and down small hills and in and out of woods the fairways were very fair. In the afternoon we toured the Louisville Slugger baseball bat manufacturer.
I was on my own the next two days. Freeman Park in Eliza-bethtown, KY is a lovely well maintained park. After having trouble finding the park entrance and also hole 1, I was well

rewarded. The course plays along cut grass fairways amongst large cedars trees and rolling hills. The lake comes into play on several holes on the back nine including a basket located on a peninsula! This place was simply Gorgeous and highly recommend for a DG road trip. I plan on returning here some-day. Rated 4 stars.
Next was a private course named “Holler in the Hills” in Brownsville, KY located very close to Mammoth Cave. To get there I had to drive down a gravel road, open a privacy gate, sign a waiver and gladly paid the $5 donation. Playing a pri-vate course solo with no one else round was rather surreal. The amount of work done here to put a course in one’s “back-yard” is much appreciated. Several memorable holes on the back 9 made this place special. The elevation changes in the woods along with the KY rock formations made this quite a hike and DG challenge. Rated 4 stars, some would say 5.
Back in Louisville again, Iroquois Park is a very old course recently upgraded with new tees and a re-designed configura-tion. A mostly open front 9 lead to a mostly wooded back nine, it was a fun course but not quite the challenge I had earlier in the day; 3 stars. I drove to into southern Indiana and slept well that night.
I was at Buffalo Trace Park in Palmyra, IN by 8:30a trying to beat the heat, it was already hot though. The entire park facility with a beautiful lake was very well maintained, this wasn’t Fhilthadelphia.
I parked in a campground spot less than 50 feet from hole 19 which you play first and end up on hole 18. Thankfully the course provided plenty of shade which made most of the tee shots the “low ceiling” variety. It was well marked and flowed easily; 3.5 stars. Exhausted from the heat and playing the previous day I skipped the next planned course and arrived in South Bend, IN (my hometown) later that day and then took it easy for another day while visiting with family and friends.
My final DG destination on this trip was Lemon Lake County Park located in upper NW Indiana and the 2010 PDGA Pro Worlds Championship. This park complex contains FOUR courses ranging from a short beginner WHITE course, an older RED course, a very nice BLUE course and a world class SILVER/GOLD course depending on which set of tees are used. I simply watched the best players in the world compete their last 2 days of the tournament and played the BLUE course one evening.
My last day on the road, I drove back east for 10 hours straight without stopping at one course along the way to end my road trip. Overall, I played 7 new courses and drove 2,544 miles over an 8 day period.

I left on my 2010 road trip one day early to avoid the 100+ degree day in Philly, when I got to Moundsville, WV (just south of Wheeling) at The Black Course in Grand Vue Park it was only 93 on their mountainside course. I met the local
