    Dear Chris tian Friends

Greetings from hidamoyo As we look outside our windows either during the day or night we con see the

bush fires as they creep slowly up md

    down

    the

    hills

ond through the Veld. This is the dry season when the

fires rage continuously for several weeks. We had a nearby village that was completely burned one night

when a fire came up to the village unknown to the family. The people

    lost

all thei r belongings and it was an

opportunity for Chidamoyo to demonstrate Christian Love in sharing food and clo th ing with them.

    NEW

ARRIVALS: Bill and Reba Harrison with their two children arrived on the 28th of July to take up

the duties that the Charles Kelley family left when they had to return to the States.

    What

    a welcome sight

they were to all of us here at Chidamoyo

    who

have been without a handyman since the Kelleys left three

months ago. Bill and Reba will spend three months in language school and then be joining us full time here

    a t

    th e

    mission.

THE CLINICS CONTINUE: Bill continues to fly by-monthly to Mashame Clinic where we

    have

    seen an

appalling amount of Whooping Cough and other preventable infectious

    diseases

this year. At one time we

went being told by the chief that s ixteen people had died in two weeks between our

    visits.

    We have begun a

well-baby clinic in the area to prevent this type of problem from recurring.

    these clinics they receive

    immunizations for these

    preventable

    diseases.

    The

Church at Mashame ha s suffered a

    set-back

    when the

Church leader, o man with leprosy, went away to work in another area. We continue to teach

    through

    the

clinics and on each visit have

    opportunity

    to witness tomany people.

    Sampakorumo Clinic is

    almost

a reality. We understand that the airstrip has been completely cleared and

as soon as a grader is available the Clinic will begin. The Church at Sampakaruma has flourished and we

recently went to that area to dedicate a new

    church

building made by the people under the encouragement

of their chief. The church leader in that area is preaching at four other preaching points and wehad

    oppor

tunity to vis it one of these two weeks ago when we baptized five individuals. Two of these were men who

with teaching can become capable church leaders.

    We

hope that the clinic will influence many people in the

    area

    to accept

    Christ

    and understand

    their responsibilities

    as Christians.

Just this week I received news from Nyamunga. Nyomungo is a new area virtually untouched by the

Church of Christ and has no medical facilit ies. The local African Council is building the clinic and will

    staff it with Medical

    Assistants.

We have been invited to supervise the clinic there. I received word thi s

week that the air strip should be finished by the end of July and as soon as the clinic building is finished

we should be able to work in that area. All of these areas are located

    many

    miles

    from

    Chidomoyo. They all

take almost two hours to reach by LandRover when the roads are in good condition.

    We

    can reach them all

by air within fifteen to twenty minutes. In one day we will be able to cover all this

    ground

    and have oppor

tunity to treat and witness to many people. We would like for you to remember especially these areas of our

    work in your prayers.

SUFFER THE LITTLE CHILDREN: Two days ago we hod two children arr ive from dif ferent

    areas

    both

desperately ill. About sunrise the nurse called

    from

the Hospital and said that one child had a very stiff

neck and she thought it was meningitis. Laboratory tests proved the diagnosis and treatment was begun.

    The mother admitted

    that

the chi ld had been laying at home with

    it s

bock arched in spasm from the infection

for one week before she brought it to the Hospital. That afternoon a newborn baby of twenty-one days of age

was brought into the Hospital. It too was having rigors of spasms. When the baby was five days old the

    Ambuya

(Grandmother) had rubbed the Umbilicus with cow dung and infected the baby with Tetanus. Again

the child was kept at home for four or five days until the decis ion was made to bring it to the Hospital . Thei r

    delay in

    coming

may cost the life of their lit tle child. At the time of this writing both children are still hold

ing their own. But howthis shows us that delaying can cause untold suffering and death. One lesson, though,

that we can teach and learn

    from

this is that delaying in our acceptance and obedience of Chris t will result

in the some thing in our

    lives

in a much more significant way.

    MANY

    VICTORIES: Late last

    m onth we were

blessed by the visit of the

    Reggie Thomas

    Team

    which

    included

    the

    Rostvit Twins,

    the

    Todd

    sisters,

    Do,u.g-Willis

    and

    the

    Thomas Family. During

    a

    very, very busy

    one

    week

    period

    with

teams of Evangelist andl5?r ionari s

    going

    in

    many

    different directions, we sow three

    h p r^^idecisions

mode for Him. For those of us who work at

    Chidamoyo

    it was a very

exhausting and at the same time refreshing week. We certainly did enjoy and appreciate the efforts of the

    Thomas team.Much preparation had

    been

put into the visits by our local Church leaders. It was a great expe

rience for all of us in the Chidamoyo area.

    THE

    MEN MEET:

Each month the area men come together for a Church Leaders meeting. For the post

five or six months we have been meeting at Chidamoyo and have two days of preaching, teaching, and dis

cussions concerning the work in the area. It s encouraging to see the men when they deal with a problem

that involves their cultural backgrounds and their Christian religion turn to the scriptures to seek the

answer for the problem. Their d eb ates a re long and sometimes try

    the

patience of th e Missionaries but out

of this con come on independence of the Missionary and a dependence on the Scripture^. Early in August,

    for

    th e

first time we meet in one of the other areas. We plan for these to be moved from area to area and it*

    will

allo w local men w ho a re not

    to

    a t t e n d an d b e n ef i t a l so .

THE KID S CAPERS: Toro and Tanya continue to enrage, entertain and enchant their mother and father

as only children can do. Toro, who will be three in the next few days, likes to ploy with the rabbits we keep

    for

    food

    and is

    know n for leaving

doors open and letting little rabbits out. One of her favorite days of the

week is Sunday when she gets to go all by herself

    down

to the African School for Sunday School with the

other African children. She has never noticed that she is the only

    little

white girl in her class. Tonyof now

eighteen months, is at the tipsy-toddler stage. She always has a bump or a scrotch from trying to keep

    up

with her big sister s travels.

    Jeanne is

    busy with

    the regular chores of

    motherhood

plus the other duties that fall to her. She is pre

    sently trying

    to

    gather

    together from the

    grocer

    store sixty miles away enough

    ingredients

    to moke

    twenty-

five cakes. It s discouraging to send your list and find that one

    item

is out of stock and so

    you

    have to wait

    until the next

    week for

    the

    Lorry

    to

    go

    again. Twenty-five cakes

    will go

    a

    long way. She will

    bemeeting

    with

    her

    women s

    group

and they will be using their cooking pots to bake a cake during their meeting. This

is a big event for the ladies as they take their cakes home to their families. They do this

    from

    time to time

OS they meet weekly to study the Bible and sew together. All the activities keep the family quite busy and

    wishing for more

    time in the day.

    WE

    GET

    ENCOURAGEMENT:

We really enjoy the le tt ers tha t we receive from home and the news and

    encouragement that they bring.

    We

appreciate and are strengthened by the

    many

    prayers that are offered on

    our behalf.

    We

thank each of you who contribute financially so that we can share in this great work here.
