GDE - Status

• GDE has successfully completer Phase 1 of the Technical Design Phase

• Publication of comprehensive interim report: International Linear Collider: A Technical Progress Report– ILC-HiGrade-Report-2011-001

• Phase 2 now underway, shifts emphasis away from risk-mitigating R&D towards preparation for the final Technical Design Report (TDR end 2012):– Consolidation and review of final design baseline and

associated documentation– Preparation of updated Cost Estimate– Industrialisation of SCRF and global mass production

studies

SCRF Cryomodule Mass Production Studies

• ILC-HiGrade will coordinate European industrial studies on ILC-level production of cavities and cryomodules.– 18,000 cavities– 17,00 cryomodules

• Build on two sources of input– XFEL production of ~100 cryomodules (800 cavities)– TESLA industrial studies for 20,000 cavities (year 2000)

• Currently updating TESLA studies– Research Instruments (cavity)– Zanon (cavity)– Babcock Noell (string assembly)

• CERN-based model of string assembly– similar to LHC experience

• Studies to be complete mid-2012– Provide European input into GDE TDR cost estimate

The GDE Technical Design Report

• Primary TD Phase deliverables:– Updated design of the machine– Updated VALUE estimate– Project Implementation Plan– Results and conclusions from worldwide Risk-mitigating

R&D

• TDR will be three volumes*– Executive Summary– Part I: Results of Risk-Mitigating R&D– Part II: ILC Baseline Design, including

• Comprehensive design document• Cost and schedule• Project Implementation Planning

Coordination requires Communication

• GDE (and ILC-HiGrade) is a worldwide (European) distributed collaboration

• Face-to-face meetings (workshops) remain critical for progress– And team building!

• However, primary (weekly) contact remains via remote conferencing

Summary

• ILC-HiGrade integration into the GDE remains at the highest level and is essentially unchanged

• GDE is now shifting focus to the preparation of the TDR, including updated cost estimate

• ILC-HiGrade co-coordinating European industrial study effort for SRF– As part of the GDE global effort

• Other key areas of TDR input now quite mature– Governance (Project Implementation Planning)– Siting (CERN and Dubna sites)
