WINNING SPINSTWO MUSICIANS WHO OFTENanchor others' bands on bass step for-ward to lead on two new albums: one,Nicki Parrott, as a singer and musician;the other, Ben Wolfe, as a musician andcomposer-arranger. Both can also be con-sidered auteurs, with Nicki conceptualiz-ing through repertoire and instrumenta-tion, and Ben through composition andorchestration.Nicki Parrott's From Paris to New

York (Arbors Records) is a judiciouslycurated program of standards associatedwith those two cities, either in lyric refer-ences or, in the case of some of the Parissongs, the roots of the composers them-selves. Pianist John di Martino, drummerAlvin Atkinson, plus Harry Allen's tenorsax join Nicki on many tracks; GilGoldstein's accordion appears only on theParis ones. Gil brings a Left Bank cabaretvibe to the Paris material, such as EdithPiaf's haunting "If You Love Me," an inti-mate accordion and voice duet, sansrhythm.Since coming to New York from her

native Australia in the 1990s, Nicki hasbeen a first-call bassist for neo-swing andmainstream jazz musicians in the BigApple while also developing and honingher talents as a vocalist. She applies herlight, clear-toned voice meticulously yetbuoyantly to interpreting classic standardswith emotional depth and an easy, naturalswing. Here she outdoes herself in her cre-ative selection of repertoire, combining thefamiliar with the neglected, the joyouswith the wistful. And she's full of delight-ful surprises, like "I Love Paris" recast as acall-response between Harry's tenor andher vocal; or "April in Paris," opening withHarry playing the famous Count Basiearrangement out chorus. The album is especially rewarding for

Nicki's deep and careful mining of reper-toire. New York songs include such chest-nuts as Rodgers and Hart's celebration ofthe five boroughs, "Manhattan" (augment-ed by some new culinary citations fromNicki) and the swinger "Broadway" (sansvocal), as well as the rarer Sammy Cahnand Jule Styne gem, "The BrooklynBridge" and Dave Frishberg's sly "Do YouMiss New York?" Instrumentally, there'salso "On Broadway," with rhythmic hintsof its R&B beginnings, Nicki plucking outthe melodic lead. A rollicking up-tempo"There's a Boat That's Leaving Soon forNew York" is lustily swung by Nicki and

Alvin, and Richard Rodgers' "Slaughter On10th Avenue," showcases the breathy sideof Harry's tenor. The Paris songs also range from the

familiar to the less so. In the first category, there's Michel Legrand and JacquesDemy's "I Will Wait for You," and JacquesBrel and Rod McKuen's "Ne Me QuittePas/If You Go Away," delivered in bothFrench and English. The exquisitely frag-ile "Under Paris Skies" and CharlesTrenet's archetypical cabaret chanson "LaMer" are heard less frequently. Whethersinging in English or French, laying downthe beat, or bringing her bass playing(pizzicato and arco) to the fore, Nicki iscaptivatingly in charge on this envoi to twoiconic cities.Ben Wolfe's Fatherhood is the bassist's

musical eulogy to his father, Dan, who diedlast year. But it is in no way maudlin or adowner. Rather, it is a celebration, show-casing a vibrant and changing cast of musi-cians on nine originals and one standard.Seven of the tunes feature a string quartet, which interacts with different versions of ajazz quintet on the two opening tracks,"Blind Seven" and "Gone Now." The formerpresents alto saxophonist ImmanuelWilkins and vibist Joel Ross, the latter Joeland tenor saxophonist Ruben Fox, whosehusky solo recalls Paul Gonsalves.Up next are three varied quintet tracks

without strings in a hard-bop vein. Twofeature trumpeter Giveton Gelin. The for-midable tenor saxophonist JD Allenappears on another piece aptly titled "TheEnforcer." Ben makes impressive, and impressive-

ly varied, use of the strings on the fivepieces that conclude the album. Theromantic lyricism of "It's True" featuresJoel's vibes. "First Things First" offerssolos from Joel, Ben and, in his onlyappearance, trombonist Steve Davis.Check out the exotic shuffle and shiftingtempos of "The Kora La" and canteringbeat of "Edged." Written by a bassist, BobHaggart, "What's New?" ends the record-ing elegiacally with vibes with rhythm andstring quartets. Ben has unassuminglyachieved an admirable feat with this offer-ing, fully incorporating a string quartetinto a jazz setting with admirable ease.

Nicki Parrott appears at BirdlandTheater, August 8-10. The Ben WolfeQuintet celebrates the release ofFatherhood at Dizzy's Club August 1-4.

DAVID MATTHEWS BIRDLAND / AUGUST 13-17NYC jazz listeners need no introduction to pianist, composer, arranger DavidMatthews (not to be confused with the South African pop star). He arrived in the BigApple from Cincinnati in the early 1970s, and his extensive big band exploits sincethen have been well documented, in particular the Seventh Avenue South era of the1980s. David's acclaimed Manhattan Jazz Quintet was the #1 ensemble in Japan fora decade. Other credits include his stint as the staff arranger for CTI records, Clio andGrammy awards, and work with many pop stars, on film scores and TV commercialjingles. Here David gets to stretch out his contemporary jazz chops with a formidabletrio comprising bassist Eddie Gomez and drummer Steve Gadd, each a legend in hisown right. MGN

DON BRADENZINC / AUGUST 8A Harvard engineering student who also played jazz around Cambridge and Boston inthe early 1980s, Don Braden has forged a widely encompassing career as a jazz artist, not only with his tenor saxophone and flutes, but also with his pen and mentoring. He's worked with bands of some of the top singers (Betty Carter) and musicians (TomHarrell, Freddie Hubbard), as well as leading his own quartets and octet. Don hascomposed for television shows, big bands and orchestras, and taught jazz at a numberof colleges. He has developed a special talent for interpreting soul and R&B tunes asjazz, as on his current album, Earth, Wind and Wonder, featuring jazz quartet ren-derings of songs from Earth, Wind and Fire and Stevie Wonder. Pianist Oscar Perez, bassist Kenny Davis and drummer Jeremy Warren join Don on the bandstand. GK

REUBEN WILSONSMOKE JAZZ & SUPPER CLUB / AUGUST 8While legendary is a term bandied about far too cavalierly, occasionally an artist thor-oughly warrants the moniker. Such is the case with Reuben Wilson, a master of theHammond organ whose musical innovations of the 1960s and '70s blazed a trail thatwould be traversed by both hip-hop and acid jazz artists in the 1980s and '90s. It's easyto hear why Reuben's music has enjoyed such a timeless power: his singularly soulfulorgan playing mixed with a combination of both hard-swinging and funk grooves feelas fresh and vital today as they undoubtedly did when they were first recorded. AtSmoke, Reuben is joined by guitarist Paul Bollenback and drummer Carmen IntorreJr. He reprises his performance August 18 at the Jazz Forum. SH

AVISHAI COHEN TRIOBLUE NOTE / AUGUST 1-4Bassist Avishai Cohen usually concentrates on touring near his home in Israel.During this rare stateside appearance, he returns to New York and the Blue Note, theclub where he's previously recorded live albums of his performances. On his 2018 CD1970, the bassist featured many pop-style vocal tracks, some in Hebrew. But hisbrand-new release, Arvoles (Trees), extends the quirky, emboldened, staccato unisoninstrumental melodies that are his signature, inspired by his tenure with ChickCorea. His upcoming gig reunites Avishai with drummer Mark Giuliana and pianistShai Maestro after 10 years, playing contemporary global Middle Eastern jazz-influ-enced music. They offer new material, and revisit compositions from the era of theGently Disturbed and Continuo albums, which established the sidemen, whomAvishai hired when they got out of college. MGN

ABDULLAH IBRAHIMJAZZ STANDARD / AUGUST 1-4The South African pianist originally known as Dollar Brand took the name AbdullahIbrahim when he converted to Islam in the late 1960s. His group The Jazz Epistles, featuring the trumpeter Hugh Masekela, recorded the first South African jazz LP in1959-'60. By 1963 the pianist impressed Duke Ellington so much that the jazz legendhad him recorded for an LP called Duke Ellington Presents the Dollar Brand Trio.Abdullah is considered an exponent of the lilting rhythmic style known as Cape orTownship jazz, and he is also a hypnotically mesmeric solo pianist. At this gig he leadsthe latest iteration of his septet Ekaya (a name meaning "home" that he's used for hisbands since 1983), featuring Noah Jackson on bass and cello, Will Terrill on drums,Cleve Guyton on alto sax, clarinet, flute and piccolo; Lance Bryant on tenor sax,Andreae Murchison on trombone, and Marshall McDonald on baritone sax. GEORGE COLEMANCHARLIE PARKER FESTIVAL AT TOMPKINS SQUARE PARK / AUGUST 25Saxophonist George Coleman has spent a lifetime cultivating a sound that spans thevery history of jazz. From his formative years with Ray Charles and B.B. King to hiscontributions on landmark albums with Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock, George'ssonic fingerprint shows a style that is always forward-thinking. As a leader, Georgedisplays talents that continue to evolve, with The Guardian stating in its review of hislatest album, 2016's A Master Speaks, "At 80, he's still one of the most fluent andinventive tenor saxophonists around." George's trio joins him for this concert part ofthe annual Charlie Parker Festival. He also brings a quartet at the Side Door onAugust 9-10. EW

BRENT BIRCKHEAD GINNY'S SUPPER CLUB / AUGUST 23In Brent Birckhead's music, listeners find past, present and future expression.Baltimore born and raised, the alto saxophonist and multi-woodwind artist is part ofa talented generation that cross-pollinates art forms—an emergent collective whoseidentity is at once passionately collaborative and defiantly individualistic. In his linesand across his compositions, Brent plays with an ever-present urgency; his artistryincludes visual narratives, social stories and historical reflection. Alongside therelease of Birckhead (Revive Music), his first recording as a leader, Brent issued thevideo release for "The Mourning After." Directed by Babatunde Salaam, the videopresents community response to police shootings with tenderness and frank honesty.Brent's band features Corey Wallace on trombone, Jonathan Michel on bass andWillerm Delisfort on piano. SJ

JED LEVYSMALLS JAZZ CLUB / AUGUST 23-24Long a part of the New York City jazz scene, tenor saxophonist Jed Levy has a broadmusical palette inspired by his work with artists like Jaki Byard, Jack McDuff, PeterLeitch and Steve Davis. Over the past decade, Jed has been focusing on leading hisown bands, in addition to sharing his considerable gifts as a prolific composer andinspired improviser. The saxophonist is known for his spacious, lyrical playing, thoughhis adventurous spirit takes him down many musical paths. Jed seeks a variety of col-ors in the music he writes or arranges for a session, and he thrives on the extra free-dom to explore when leading a pianoless group. For this engagement and on August 30at Maureen’s Jazz Cellar, guitarist Phil Robson, bassist Peter Slavov and drummerClarence Penn join Jed on the bandstand. KD

CHARLES ALTURAJAZZ GALLERY / AUGUST 23-24Charles Altura's sound resists description, but listeners who experience his music liveunderstand its potency. Rather than forcing a certain aesthetic, the guitarist and com-poser tends toward allowing sound to emerge in the moment, regardless of musicalcontext. He seems to have perfected a near instantaneous habit of listening andresponding in a way that creates an entire sonic narrative. A Los Angeles native,Charles has played with a range of similar individualists, from Chick Corea to TerenceBlanchard—the latter of whom recruited him to play the iconic guitar theme on thesoundtrack for Spike Lee's BlacKkKlansman. Last year at the Jazz Gallery, Charlesperformed his residency commission project, Portraits of Resonance. This year, hebrings together a different crew of like-minded artists for an evening of new music. SJ

JON FADDISJAZZ FORUM / AUGUST 16-17Trumpeter Jon Faddis is a musical phenomenon in live concert. He mixes sheer power, technical prowess, poignancy and some whimsy into his playing, each of those quali-ties absorbed in some fashion from his mentor, the late Dizzy Gillespie, with whom hestarted working at age 21. Since serving as Dizzy's longtime wingman, Jon has takenthat bright, high-octane sound on his own path as a solo artist and bandleader.Besides the blistering high-note solos, he offers delicacy on ballads and even addssome Satchmo-inspired vocals to supplement his good humor and on-stage rapport. This band, which he calls Faddisaction, unites Jon with three of his former students:Andrew Latona on guitar, Mikey Migliore on bass and Lucy Wijnans on vocals. RodneyGreen joins in on drums. KF

WHEN AN ARTIST'S PAST IS Agilded one, full of achievements and

accolades, it's tempting to linger there. Butyou won't find Herbie Hancock mired inthe good old days. He's made a lifelongpractice of keeping listeners' ears on theirtoes, so to speak, exploring every avenue ofjazz—the in, the out and the previouslyunimagined—in the process. The mixed metaphor elicits a chuckle

from the veteran pianist, composer andelectronic music pioneer. "I like to keep myears on their toes," Herbie affirms. "If Idon't come up with a new idea for a record,I'm not going to do it. If it's going to soundlike something I did before or somethingsomeone else did, I'm not going to do it."The 14-time Grammy winner set constantinnovation as his goal in the early 1960s,when he was part of Miles Davis' leg-endary second great quintet (with RonCarter, Tony Williams and Wayne Shorter, who remains Herbie's close friend). He'snever wavered from that ideal. He's working on a new recording that

will be true to form, in that it's not true toany form this NEA Jazz Master has fol-lowed so far. "It's not that kind of standard

record where each track has certain peopleperforming from beginning to end," Herbieexplains. "Different people pop up at dif-ferent times on different tracks. Everysong we're recording pretty much soundsdifferent from every other one, there's alldifferent combinations of genres." RapperSnoop Dogg contributes to one of thetracks, so far; artists such as tabla virtuosoZakir Hussein, saxophonist KamasiWashington; singer, songwriter, bassistThundercat; and Herbie Hancock bandmainstays including drummer VinnieColaiuta, guitarist Lionel Loueke andbassist James Genus also appear."I'm taking a modular approach on this

album," the 79-year-old jazz polymathexplains. "A certain idea may start one ofthe pieces, then may be interrupted bysomething else. That could be a differenttempo, or it could be a different sound thatcan take us off in a slightly different direc-tion. How to put these different modulestogether to be interesting and have a cohe-sion is a challenge."The full force of Herbie's history and

experience is going to be brought to bearwhen he hits the stage of the BeaconTheatre on August 1, in the company ofVinnie, Lionel and James, as well as multi-instrumentalist Terrace Martin. As far as putting together a concert set

list, "It's kind of puzzle to figure out," hemuses. "You've got fans who pay hard-earned money to come see you. They wantto hear some of the things that they know. They bought your record, they like it, theywant to hear live some of the things they'refamiliar with." That's a lot of territory to cover. Herbie

Hancock, composer of jazz standards suchas "Watermelon Man," "Maiden Voyage"and "Speak Like a Child" is also the jazz-rarity who filled stadiums with his ground-breaking fusion band Headhunters, andmade history with the first jazz album togo platinum, Head Hunters. At timesHerbie has wandered far afield from thestraight-ahead jazz of his youthful days asa sideman with Donald Byrd, Phil Woodsand Oliver Nelson. Just think of his hitsingle (and video) Rockit, or his funk-rock-jazz ensemble Mwandishi, which some con-cert-goers claim to have seen levitateonstage. But he has always kept his handin the tradition, touring with the all-starjazz ensemble VSOP, producing WyntonMarsalis' first album, and playing duetswith the likes of Chick Corea and OscarPeterson. At his upcoming concert, listeners can

also expect to hear references to the newproject Herbie is currently exploring in thestudio. "Some of the essence of this modu-lar approach will be in much of our presen-tation at the Beacon. I think we did a bit ofthat on the last tour, but we have newer

ON HIS NEW CD, G8S, A FOUR-song EP of recordings from 2005,

Giacomo Gates delivers an original, "ADifferent Thing," that is an encapsulationof his art. In it, he asserts his right to sit inwith jazz musicians, because he digs themusic and can express it as well with hisinstrument, his voice, as the others do withtheirs. And have fun doing it."I used to sing all the time," Giacomo

says from his home in Connecticut. "I sangfor the fun of it, never pursued the musicbusiness until I was in my late 30s [late1980s], but I'm still a fan of that music Isang from the '60s and '70s. I still listen toGene Ammons and Lambert, Hendricks &Ross, Eddie Jefferson and Dexter Gordon,Hank Mobley, Frank Sinatra and DeanMartin. I dig Dean Martin a lot, he was aterrific singer with a great sense ofhumor."Giacomo's appreciation of Dean seems

to rub off in his conversational style, whichoften veers toward an (unwitting) impres-sion of Dean as hipster. After reeling off alist of the albums he's recorded since the'90s, he concludes: "I'm still trying to swinga little bit, baby."A fan long before he became a "jazzer"

(one of his favorite terms), Giacomo pur-sued a different kind of digging in his for-mer life, working construction for most ofthe first two decades of his adulthood, largely in Alaska. But he did have longmusical roots."I took guitar lessons as a young kid,

from 8 to 14 or so," he says. "My teacherswere jazzers, including Mickey LeDonne, the late father of pianist-organist MikeLeDonne. So I was exposed to the fakebook [the American standards songbook]and learned a lot more of it playing in awedding band when I was 16."It was much earlier, when he was 7

years old, that he made his rather inauspi-cious debut as singer. "I was taking tapdance lessons," he remembers, "and at therecital I didn't want to dance, so theinstructor said I had to sing instead, so Idid. I sang 'Pretty Baby.' I sang because itwas fun."Giacomo admits to avidly listening to

the music of that time, from R&B and soul,The Four Tops and Marvin Gaye, to rock'n' roll like the Rolling Stones and JimiHendrix. "But I also listened to jazz on

New York radio stations," he says, citingDJs Symphony Sid and Al "Jazzbo" Collinsand recalling hearing Dexter, TheloniousMonk and others. It was on radio in thelate 1960s that he discovered one of hismost lasting influences, Jon Hendricks ofLambert, Hendricks & Ross.Decades later, after he had made

recordings, he went to see Hendricks &Co., Jon's family group, bringing a cassetteof his versions of Jon's music. "I said to Jon'I want you to know that I dig what you do.'He said he had heard my music and invit-ed me to come back that Sunday and sit inwith him. When he called me up andasked, 'What do you want to sing, baby?' Isaid, 'I don't have to sing anything, juststanding up here with you is good enough.'He laughed and called 'Straight, NoChaser,' I felt honored to sing with him."To Giacomo, Jon and Eddie are the epit-

ome of vocalese, the art of singing lyrics setto recorded improvised instrumental solos."Whenever Jon or Eddie sing on records itsounds like they're having as much fun asthe musicians and they [musicians] are notjust backing them up, they're with themand having fun too. And Eddie's lyrics, which he sings like a horn, are real andfunny and soulful and thoughtful, andJon's are funny, philosophical and soulfultoo."Vocalese is musical, funny and you

have to be articulate, and also know thesolo. It's hard but it's fun."The only problem is that, unlike when

Jon and Eddie were writing their classicvocalese lyrics, these days it is hard torecord your own similar songs. Giacomohas written many vocalese solos that hecan't record because now you need copy-right permission and, as he says, "If you'renot a real big name and the publishersthink they can make money, they don'tgrant permission to record them." But heperforms them anyway, another reason tohear him in person.Asked if there is a full album in the

works, Giacomo says he wants to do a dif-ferent kind of Christmas album, one with

ANOTHER REASON TO CELEBRATEBy Elzy Kolb

The real feel

EXPRESSING SOMETHING RA-ther than impressing someone was thegoal for singer Sara Gazarek as she con-ceptualized her new recording, ThirstyGhost. Though it could be characterized asa breakup album, for the L.A.-based singerand composer, "It's less about using therecording as a way to process pain, andmore a result of finally allowing what Iwas experiencing to show up in my art."

In the past her song choices wouldreflect a concept, or Sara would hew to"light and bright" tunes that she hopedwould boost the mood of her audiences. This time around, she pondered, "How do Ifind a repertoire to reflect what I'm goingthrough and breathe something into it? Imade a conscious choice to be vulnerable.I'm trying to create a space where fans seethemselves reflected in the music."

Thirsty Ghost comprises originals alongwith songs from composers across a varietyof eras and genres, from Hoagy Carmichaelto Bjork to Stevie Wonder to BradMehldau. Sara covers some classic tunesthat have been recorded by the legendaryvoices of earlier generations, such as"Lonely Hours," a Sarah Vaughan favoritecirca 1964. She also does "Never Will IMarry," a hit for Nancy Wilson penned byFrank Loesser, and "I Get Along WithoutYou Very Well," which Billie Holiday sangon her revered Lady in Satin album.

"I've struggled with doing standardsassociated with others," Sara muses."These are beautiful songs that speakabout universal experiences. There areways to breathe new life into these incred-ible compositions that are not bound bygenre or time period. I wouldn't use theoriginal arrangement of 'Never Will IMarry' recorded by Nancy Wilson andCannonball Adderley. That's particular toits time. I would feel bad to appropriatesomething so specific."Also included is a starkly powerful take

on Dolly Parton's "Jolene." Though the

renowned tunesmith may be underappreci-ated in certain circles and rarely coveredby jazz artists, Sara finds much to admire."She's a living legend and an inspiration tosongwriters. Dolly Parton writes a songevery day—think of all that material thathas never seen the light of day! It's a wayof exercising that muscle so you're not socritical. That's something that often comesup in writing workshops—instilling theidea that things don't have to be perfect. You learn to trust that it's going to be qual-ity, no matter how long it takes to write."Though Thirsty Ghost is a shift for

Sara, she has gotten a good response fromlisteners. "What they really want from thismusic is sincerity," the vocalist notes. "Thereason they're drawn to this genre isauthenticity, songs expressing the humancondition. That's why I love the genre andwhat I'm hungry for. Doing this, being vul-nerable like this, is terrifying but that'sthe whole purpose of art."Sara has a too-rare gig in the Big Apple

this month celebrating the release ofThirsty Ghost at Jazz Standard August 10,with bassist Matt Aronoff, drummer ZachHarmon, saxophonist Immanuel Wilkins, trombonist Alan Ferber and bass clar-inetist Charles Pillow. And there's alwaysa chance of a special guest. "That's thebeauty of New York on a Saturday night—everyone who's not gigging wants to be outon the town."She's planning to be around town for a

few extra days, "It's really important as anartist to have a pulse of what's happeningin different parts of the country."

See, hearVisiting a sculpture garden in a bucolic

setting sent Christian Tamburr in anunexpected new musical direction. Whilewandering through the 42-acre Groundsfor Sculpture, near Princeton, NJ, thevibraphonist and composer enjoyed discov-ering artistic works tucked into the ver-dant foliage, with pieces by SewardJohnson making a particular impression.

"You walk through the park and stum-ble into a moment—it was so real, like aphoto frozen in real life, like a frame froma movie," he recalls. Christian found him-self imagining what the soundtrack wouldsound like, if the striking artistic scenesactually were in a movie. "I looked at thesculpture, and each one sounded differentto me. I thought, I'm at Grounds forSculpture, and I'm creating sounds forsculpture." That flash of a concept becomesreality in his upcoming album, TheAwakening: Sounds for Sculpture, witheach of the 11 compositions on the record-ing inspired by and named after a SewardJohnson sculpture.Connecting the aural with the visual is

not entirely new for the North Carolina-based musician. Though jazz is his deepestand most enduring musical love, "In thepast 10 years, I've been working more intheater, Cirque du Soliel, productions witha lot of physical activity on stage. Writingmusic to accompany it gives you a new wayof looking at it," he explains. The sculp-ture-inspired project "felt like scoringmusic or a theatrical production. When Iwalked up to it, what did I see? Thatmoment, that fairy tale, whatever I feltabout what was depicted—that was thestarting point for me."The CD takes its name from The

Awakening, a 70-foot-long bronze figurethat appears to be in the process of burst-ing out of the earth after a long burial."What is the story? Is it a god, a monster,a symbol of the human struggle? Like allart, it's for your own interpretation,"Christian muses. "For me, he was frozenand has now awakened. That's the sculp-ture that made this whole thing happen."After seeing the art in 2017, getting per-

mission to use the titles of the sculpturesas well as the images took a while. In themeantime, Christian moved cross-countryfrom his previous home base in Las Vegas, toured with a variety of ensembles, anddealt with the reality of day-to-day life."It's funny how inspiration comes in dif-

ferent ways," he notes. "I was looking andtrying to interpret my view of the pieces. Ialways knew how it would sound, I justhad to find time to get it down once thekids were in bed." He composed the mate-rial between November 2018 and June2019, and headed into the studio immedi-ately afterward. The world premiere of The Awakening:

Sounds for Sculpture takes place at Dizzy'sClub August 16-18. Joining Christian onthe bandstand are pianist Scott Giddens, trumpeter Linda Briceño, bassist PaulCreel, drummer John Davis, and percus-sionists Keita Ogawa and Michael Dobson;vocalist Clint Holmes makes a specialguest appearance. Appropriately enough, there will be

visual elements to the prerelease gig, including projected images of the art.Prerelease copies of the self-produced CDare available at the gig; the official releasedate is set for early 2020.

Artists Talk Albums: Kalia Vandever

WE MIGHT NOT IMMEDIATELYnominate the trombone as the lead

melody instrument in a jazz quartet. However, In Bloom, the debut album oftrombonist and composer Kalia Vandevernot only makes a compelling case for theformat, it also documents the rise of anexciting new voice for the music.

continued on page 28

Drawing on four years' worth of compo-sitional material and fronting a stellarquartet (occasionally quintet) on thealbum, Kalia puts forth a gorgeously lyri-cal vision for the music, highlighting bothher tremendous instrumental facility anda highly melodic compositional voice. "I feltlike I had finally settled into my identity asa musician and composer, something trueto who I am," she explains. "The songsreflect that, and it was important to me todocument them."Indeed, her instinct seems spot-on:

While many jazz albums feature minimalattention to written material in favor ofextended blowing sessions, In Bloom offersan alternative, one in which tremendous

care and thought went into shaping beau-tiful melodies. While Kalia's voice as asoloist is highly engaging, her voice as acomposer is equally crucial, as the albumtravels from the groove-driven ostinatowork of the title track to the beautiful, del-icate melody of "Amethyst." "I'm influ-enced by a lot of different genres, but whenI write and improvise, I'm mostly thinkingof strong melodies," Kalia notes. "Theyusually come to me by singing, sitting atthe piano and singing over it." With the closing track on the album,

"Seeing Less," we hear that approach pre-sented more openly, as Kalia starts outwith a wordless vocal take on a hauntingmelody, backed in duet by guitar. Anintriguing coda to In Bloom, "Seeing Less"also gives a hint of projects to come. "It'sone of the later compositions I wrote," sheexplains. "It's one direction I'm going in,compositionally. I'm developing a solo proj-ect and introducing more solo work into myperformances, which feature solo trombonewith effects. I'm going to add voice to that, and I'm hoping to sing more."At the Jazz Gallery August 17, Kalia

celebrates the album's release with a per-formance featuring repertoire from InBloom. However, with a nod to the devel-oping project, solo trombone works alsoserve as interludes between the pieces, giv-ing listeners an opportunity to hear thisemerging stage in Kalia's trajectory. Forthose looking for a remarkable new voicein the music, the evening is not one to bemissed. To learn more about Kalia Vandever,

On Facebook, Brian Watson told about a gig he once played with a rather lame danceband. He knew about the poor quality of the group, but needed to pay the rent. The two menwho led the band were the problem. They were not talented musicians, they had arrange-ments that were unsuited to the sparse instrumentation of the band, and they wasted a lotof time between tunes arguing about tunes, tempos and solos.Brian and another trombone player were sitting in the front row with the saxophones, and

so were accessible to a couple who danced over to the bandstand. The guy said, "You guysdon't sound very good." Brian's section mate shot back, "Oh, yeah? You should try sitting uphere where we are!"

30 Jacobo photo by Eddy Vittini.

THERE ARE MANY MOMENTS ONCimarrón (E7 Studios), the sophomorealbum from pianist Josean Jacobo andTumbao, when you feel overcome by a sortof ancient spiritual magic. That is becauseJosean's pianism is completely subsumedby the forces that have molded his spiritu-al heritage. That unique aspect of beingAfro-Dominican seems forged into theebony and ivory keys of the piano. It is, ashe says, "The spiritual magic brought bythe African slaves, mixed with the Catholicbeliefs of their masters. So you may hearan explosive rhythm that might resemblean African culture mixed with chants thattalk about the Virgin Mary or any of theCatholic saints."In what appears to be a fascinating

break with almost all forms of Afro-Latinjazz, Josean's music is organically bred bymerging myriad inflectional varieties ofrhythms used in the development of thelanguage of Afro-Dominican music. "Wehave many different rhythms to workwith," he says. "When I say many, I don'tknow the exact number of them, but I amsure there are more than 30. I have heardpeople say there are around 90 differentrhythms, but I cannot confirm thatmyself." Still, listening to his music onCimarrón, you would think that the rhyth-mic variety was endless. You only have toexperience the breathtaking re-inventionof John Coltrane's deeply meditative song"Lonnie's Lament" on this recording to feelwhat he is talking about. Rippling jazz grooves form from

Josean's piano, with a delicate curlicue ofmelodic and harmonic lines, as the rest ofthe group is roused by the thunderous col-lision of Afro-Dominican rhythms. All thisproduces music that has a cinematic qual-ity launched almost entirely by broodinglypercussive tumbling grooves. At its heart,it is driven by the impulse to create thespiritual magic that comprises Josean's

music. "Spiritually, you can find inspira-tion in music," he says. "It fills the mindwith ideas of hope for a musician, as wellas for society, which is sorely in need ofchange." Josean's music dances like the prover-

bial double helix. It is rooted in the verysoul of Afro-Dominican music and it seemspoised to revolutionize Latin jazz. He isdiffident about praise, retreating to aninterior space to explain what makes hismusic so eloquently different. "Unlikeother Caribbean cultures like Cuba, inAfro-Dominican music the lowest pitchtambor does the improvising, so that whenthis drum plays a certain pattern you feelthe vibration in your bones," he says."Afro-Dominican jazz expression gives methe necessary tools to transmit to myDominican people that we can free our-selves from the cultural boundaries thatpoliticians and history set for us. I believethat this can bring the world closer togeth-er and make us forget our differences andstart focusing on our similarities instead."

Josean Jacobo and Tumbao cele-brate the launch of Cimarrón at ClubBonafide August 2 and 9.
