1st Semester:

Perspective

The perspective investigated within this project is that of public interaction and

participation, and how the recording of experiences and visual perception, which explore

both virtual and physical surroundings, can be disseminated showing the emergence of

a new sense of place within the digital environment.

To ensure that this project can be properly executed other artists in similar fields have

also been researched and attempts at recreating similar ideas initially have been

undertaken. Main influences in the first part of this project have been from the likes of

Rafael Lozano Hemmer, Troika, Pablo Valbuena and Random International. All include

elements of play and discovery while using digital technology in an innovative manner.

Software

The main software used to create these test experiences have been MaxMSP and

Jitter. Initially practical experiments included the basic inclusion of a camera, film clip

and user interaction. Mainly the user would attempt to control their visual imagery. This

has then evolved to cameras/sensors picking up movement from different interactive

actions. Depending on the movements being made; depends on the visuals and

imagery that the participant sees. The challenge in the practical part of this project now

is to allow the user to control more elements of images and live film and assess the

individuals level of participation and discovery and exploration of the media, alongsidepassive observers also unintentionally being involved. Initially the project had a slightly

different direction in that the user would just interact with an object, however, now the

feeling is that the user must gain something, some insight from this interaction and

discover something or create a new experience while participating. The main

component in this project is to understand the advanced capabilities of Maxmsp which

is being addressed via attending monthly open knowledge seminars, allowing for digital

artists to swap knowledge, ideas and concepts and provide tutorials and talks. Other

interactive elements have also been tested such as smaller projects and tests in flash to

gain an insight into public reaction to interactive work, prior to building larger projects.

Development

The development within this part of the project will allow for further investigation into

particular behaviours that people automatically display when initially confronted with

familiar technology and how this changes as they experiment with the interactive and

participative component of the piece.

Preliminary findings and experiments have proven that people enjoy discovering the

playfulness of the work, and start to explore other ways and ideas of using it, once they

are comfortable. Being confronted with their own representation for some can be an

almost instant engagement, others take longer to realize that some of the imagery they

are interacting with and controlling is actually being operated by their participation. The

discovery of this can prove different depending on the user.

This current practical development is what is driving the research and methodology of

this project, as new findings are discovered by audience participation then further

research into space, environment, user interaction and participation are developed and

undertaken. The main concept that has been prominent in this is that of the familiar and

the unfamiliar, and how self-awareness and also in-built behaviours come to the

forefront. When a user is confronted with what is known to them, and then asked to

engage with it in an unexpected way, new actions can be discovered.

Much of this initial practical part of the project is experimental and is furthered by more

exploration and user interaction. The aim is for this to then become very much a user

driven experience, which is different for each individual.
