DIRECTOR ’S NOTE
This is my third staging of this delightful musical and it is as fresh to me as the first time because high school students just love it! When I first saw it in New York, I thought it was the perfect musical for high school and college theater depart-ments because the politics, the irreverence and the humor all spoke, at least to me, to the cleverness and creativity of the student mind. So what is Urinetown? It’s a satire of the many problems that persist in our culture and it’s neatly tucked into a musical score that pays homage to all of musical theater. It makes fun of every-thing and everybody but it does so with great spirit and a huge heart. A challeng-ing show that is dense with intricate music and staging, it requires a very good cast and design team and we are fortunate to have both. This company is loaded with talent, inventiveness and verve and they have discovered with glee, all of the characters that inhabit Urinetown’s world. Special thank you’s to Jennifer Tomlin and Michael McDowell for their wonderful work with the music; to Jane Latva, our accompanist, who carry us through our long rehearsals; to Anna Marie Coronado (Costumes) and Iian Court (Lights) for transforming the actors; and to Kenn Miller and his tireless crew for our great set. Again, as last year, a very special thank you to Will and Kelly , our two stage managers without whom we simply couldn’t get the job done. And to you, the audience. Look past the obvious, listen for clever humor, and see how many shows you can identify from the musical numbers. Oh, and welcome to Urinetown, at least for the moment!
