FOREWORD
It is the nature earth where hazards exist in the form of environmentalprocesses or events with potential of causing a disaster. On the other hand, it is the
same earth where ecosystems and natural resources provide buffer and capacitiesagainst the impact of disasters. Thus, our earths environment holds the key forunderstanding and reducing disasters. Therefore, knowing and caring our environmentcan help us protect from the impacts of disasters, which are otherwise growing innumbers and intensities. This recalls us to remind Gandhijis thoughts that Earthprovides enough to satisfy every mans need, but not every mans greed .
Our children are our future and safeguarding the future of human race lies intheir hands. Concern of the children on safeguarding environment and reducing therisk of disasters is need of the time. Students have juvenile but thoughtful young
minds with innovative ideas. NIDM tried to capture students ideas and innovationsthrough their poems and slogans on the theme Safeguarding Environment for DisasterRisk Reduction by organizing nationwide competitions.
These contributions in the form of Hindi and English poems and slogans aregreat knowledge in them and give a message in their own ways for reducing disasterrisks using environment based approach. NIDM has brought out this publication as acompilation of these poems and slogans as an awareness drive for illuminating thethinking process in masses and particularly in children on how environmental protectioncan reduce disasters.
I am very optimistic about the use of this publication by various mass media, local institutions, NGOs, education and awareness making institutions in theirprogrammes at local levels.

PREFACE
Hazards are the processes or the events of nature. Be it an earthquake, alandslide, a flooding, drought or a chemical mishap it relates to environment in itsoccurrence. Environment, in the form of natural resource systems, hold a majorstake in peoples vulnerability to the impacts of these disasters. Concerns andprotection of environment within our development planning process as well as day today activities also reduced our exposure to the challenges of the disasters.
Climate-change is known to aggravate hazards and vulnerability related tofloods, drought, cyclone, landslides, epidemics and forest fires, besides increasingsocial conflicts and miseries. Climatic conditions and environmental phenomenonare also known to factor in the impacts of chemical accidents. NIDM has taken thetheme Safeguard Environment for Disaster Risk Reduction for dissemination ofknowledge and creation of mass awareness.

This samskrit sloka indicates the role of knowledge about our environmentand ecosystems including earth processes for a wider perspective of risk perception(assessment), disaster resistance (blend of avoidance, tolerance, resilience), capacityand recovery potential backed with the ecosystem services and sustainability in theenvironment where a particular community inhabits.
The book is an outcome of the awareness drive of NIDM for students concernon environment for reducing disaster risk and vulnerability. Several schools acrossthe country participated in the competitions organized for slogan and poem writing inHindi and English to mark the occasion of the World Environment Day on June 5,2012. Now, the poems and slogans are compiled, edited and presented in the formof this book as a resource book for awareness programmes at any level ofcommunities, schools and local institutions.
Role of Shri Shekhar Chaturvedi in the endeavour from concept tocommissioning to printing has been significant. Ms. Sreeja S. Nair, Dr. Sushma Guleria
and Ms. Megha Kohli have been instrumental in managing the compilation of poemsand slogans. Design and editorial inputs of Sri Rajnish Goswami (NDRF) weresignificant. Members of the Printing Committee - Dr. Surya Parkash and Shri S KTiwari need special mention of thanks for their cooperation.
Not the least, Prof. Vinod K. Sharma (IIPA) and presently Vice-chairman of SikkimState Disaster Management Authority, Prof. Santosh Kumar and Prof. ChandanGhosh, have been the source of encouragement.

Environment WarnsOh! Dear Earthlings, dont let me die
I nurtured you, day and nightIts your turn now, to repay debtSafeguard me, or face the threat
One day I will die, of thirst and hungerWashed away by floods and thunder
Landslides, cyclones would destroy your worldI warn thee to heed my word
Left alone on desertified land
Sans food, water, shelter or standDislocated lives Disbanded cities
You will cry for mercy and pity
If you understand value of livingTogether lets make a new beginning
I urge thee keep me intactTo mitigate disaster impact

Earth in DangerI saw a beautiful dreamIn which the earth was green.
I saw humanity thereBut in reality, we dont care
There is only violenceand all species are in danger
They are screaming for a saviour,To control this behaviour.
Wildlife is up in smokePlease please dont poach!
Water is now turning into poisonBecause of dirty hands of pollution
The ozone layer isaffected by carbon emissionThe countries are increasing
their mass production
This can cause great disruption. Har i shClass : X-C

Safeguard The Environment
for Disaster Risk ReductionHumans greed is more than needs,
And so have changed his deeds.
The blunder he is creating,Is helping the environment in degrading.
It was his duty,To glorify natures beauty.
But alas! He proved to be vain,And all he did was for his gain.
But still there is trust,That our environment can be as strong as the crust.
We must work very hard,And save the environment till our last birthday card.
Or else we shall pave the way for the disasters,That at last shall give us plasters...

Protect the EarthWe spoil our earth,Is it really worth?
Clouds of happiness lost their way,In the polluting air day by day.
Survivors spared by the seaFor the worst thing in the recent history
Natures furry, rips Asia apart
Dead towns found in a cartTrapped for days they shall be found
Landslides away drag many downHurricane waves pound on the shore,
Money be granted for many moreTourist paradise resembles a nightmare

And protect the planet please

Safeguard The Environment
for Disaster Risk ReductionThe future
What does the future hold for us!Smog filled skies and poison cars,
And Broken land with useless dust and natures beauty behind bars.
Can! I Ever show my children (if they ever come my way),The beauty of a sunset at the ending of the day?
Can! I Walk into a forest and surround myself with trees,Yet know that it will remain for me to visit as I please?
Can I sit upon the seashore and breathe in salty air,or will it be so dirty that it is unsafe to be there?
I know that I can today do all the things I have said,But when today is yesterday will all these things be dead?

There lived a goddess verdant and pristineBang came a demon hungry and greedy
And robbed her of her beauty and sheen.

The demon left her ravaged and abused.

Protect Environment
& Save LifeFrom the plants and woodsWe get our nutrients as food
Trees give us oxygenAnd absorb the harmful carbon
When we cut treesWe in fact, Cut our lungs.
Increased fuel consumptionAnd plants destruction
Give birth to the global warmingAnd it is really life threatening
If we destroy our environment, henceIt will be suicidal in true sense
Let us plant, protect and nurse treesAnd help ourselves to be sensible and free.

Healthy EcosystemBedlam awakens the wise old sage,
Resonates, How do we combat natures rage?
Degraded environment amplifying the disaster threat,Climate change lampooning every breath.
Burgeoning temperature, floods, landslide, droughts wont thwart,Disasters ruining livelihoods, how will we put a stop?
The sophist articulates,
Conserving water, preserving forests, mangroves, coral reefs is theelixir,
Lending resilience, metamorphosing into natural buffers and physicalbarriers.
Save water, protect Earth, the commonly hailed jargon,Healthy and well managed ecosystem is the enduring bargain.

Protect Your EnvironmentEnvironmentalists tell us not to pollute a river,
It causes harm to fish,But when do we listen,We do what we wish!
We cut trees to build houses,Instead of living in a town or city,
Environmentalists also tell us to do the same,To live in a city with fun and simplicity!!
Many children go to the same school in different cars,But not knowing that its burning fossil fuels,
It also gives out poisonous gases,But we know a solution to itThat is by using a car pool!!!
So knowing that this can lead to global warming,Saving natural resources is the best,
We will need it for the next generation,
and that is what is out test!!!!Ruchi Kansal

See What? See What?Nature Says
See what ! See what!Safeguard the environment for disaster risk reduction
Because global warming and air pollution has a big relation.
Global warming causes sea level to risefloods and destruction is what that thrives
Reducing pollution is a solution wisePublic transport, carpool and CNG are great advice
See, what? See, what? Nature says
Reduce pollution and take out ways,to make Earth a prosperous place
Chit-chatt -chit water flowsBut chemicals and bacterial are all that glowsCholera and jaundice are diseases that grows
Effecting the quality of life to such a great lose.
Chlorine and antioxidants are some suggestionsTo prevent the rivers from bacterias germination
And provide people with water to drink
To increase life expectancy to the highest risk.

I asked my motherWhats wrong?
I never saw storm in season of winterOr have I not noticed it
Cause I lay sickLast year in this season
My mother replied,Its natures warningOf global warming
Yes mother, I heard it from my teacherAs she was very eagerTo tell us about the dangerThat we are going to face
All, including the human race.
What she taught us correctMother spoke ahead,
But if you want to stop itYou have to save the nature from the harm made by us
On the earths creatures

Beautiful environment that it holds,
The land by which its going through,That heaven is disaster prone!
Flowers used to sing,Along with the leaves of all trees,
The river used to dance,Along with fishes, give it a glance!
Suddenly one day,A terror broke out. That beautiful land,Had a huge cyclone!
Many diedMany lost their family lives.
Their pain, their cries,Disappeared that land,
Where heaven used to lie!
Now that land doesnt exist,No one dance and sings.

It cries.....K i r t i

Bearing in mind thatVengeance of nature spares none.
Trees have been chopped enoughTo make floods reach the extreme stage
This is what can happenWhen you put the river in rage.
River pays you back for your behaviour towards natureWhether youll destruct it or saveBecause the river can be as peaceful as a water fall
Or as turbulent as a tsunami wave.
Do your bits for natureyoure still going to get your wage.

Safeguard Environment and
Reduce DisasterThe magnanimous mellows, the soothing sky
Love their mother, sweet and serene.
She gives us food, She gives us clothes,She gives us shelter and love
And by destroying her, we are harming ourselves.
So, we must safeguard and grow more trees.Or otherwise human existence would cease.
If we try to take control of environment in our hands,Its fury would burst up and destroy these vast concrete lands.
Lets grow smart, be not its master,Instead safeguard the environment and reduce disaster.

Escaping DisasterA disaster in no time leads to many persons demiseTo escape such risk we have to take an early rise
Many are engulfed by the disasterTo protect their lives, we have to take steps faster
It frowns their relatives left behindAs they are helpless to get their loved ones find
To take preventive measures is the bestFrom facing the consequences and the rest
Practice mock drills to be ready for it any timeAnd if it strikes take steps to make everything fine.
Weather forecasts and predictions about cycloneCan protect the lives of many even in the areas most prone
In case a fire strikes use of sand bags is the bestAs being cheapest of the rest
Theres nothing we cant do, everything is in our handsThen why cant we make the ones, who fall and again stand
