Parish Priest to be Chaplain to the
Archbishop of Canterbury
Isabelle Hamley (Associate
Priest at Edwalton, Gamston
and Bridgford and Wilford
Hill) has been appointed Chaplain
to the Archbishop of Canterbury,
the Most Revd and Rt Hon Justin
Welby.
Isabelle’s primary role as
Chaplain will be to pray for,
assist and support the
Archbishop. She will have
particular responsibility for the
pastoral and liturgical dimensions
of his ministry in Lambeth Palace
(and the Church of England) as
well as managing his publishing
commitments.
Her ministry will also include
supporting the team and members
of the Community of St Anselm
and the Chemin Neuf Community
who are based at Lambeth Palace.
Archbishop Justin said: “I am
delighted to welcome Isabelle to
the team at Lambeth. The
Chaplain is a central part of life
here, supporting the Archbishop
and the family, maintaining the
rhythms of worship and prayer
and providing pastoral support for
the community who live and
work here.”
Isabelle said: “I am looking
forward to joining the team and
supporting the work of the
Archbishop and to working in
such a diverse environment, with
the different communities that
live and work in Lambeth.
“Part of my role will be to look
after them and to make sure
prayer is the beating heart of the
Palace.
“I have loved working in the
parish and I will miss that.”
Isabelle trained for ordination at
St John’s Nottingham. She has
served in parishes in West
Bingham deanery for the last 5
years at St Giles West Bridgford,
St Paul’s Wilford Hill and most
recently in Edwalton. Alongside
parish ministry Isabelle has
continued her links with St John’s

Veteran music man Don Read
has had a song he wrote 14 years
ago shared on a Church of
England website which shares
ideas and good practice among
clergy and church workers.
The song, titled “Child”, is
Don’s lyric to the tune of Bach’s
“Air On A G String” and carries
the message that the universal
child will have the world to
enjoy when we are gone. It has
been used at several baptism
services and Don received
feedback from a parent that it
might be worth sharing more
widely.
So after sending “Child” to the
Church of England, it was
posted as an Idea on its ‘Church
Support Hub’ website,
www.churchsupporthub.org, for
clergy to consider sharing with
families who may wish to
include a special song at their
christening event.
The song was part of a
collaboration with choral
arranger Michael Neaum. Don,
who is 86, doesn’t read or write
music but enjoys composing
lyrics.

rendition is by Nottingham’s

Thirty seven people from churches across Southwell &
Nottingham went on the Diocesan Pilgrimage to Walsingham
from Friday 4th to Sunday 6th November. Some were regular
Pilgrims and a few had joined for the first time.
Dr Richard Clothier said: “All were there to spend time with our Lord
in this Holy Shrine. The quietness of the location helped us to set
aside our busy lives to experience God’s presence.”
The weekend was led by Archdeacon David Picken and Canon Mel
Smith. After meeting up on the Friday the group had a substantial
supper and then joined in a Eucharist in the Holy House at the Shrine.
Richard continued: “After breakfast on Saturday, Canon Mel led us in
a Bible study which we all felt was inspiring. We then had free time
to relax in God’s presence before lunch. In the evening there was a
Pilgrims Eucharist in the Shrine Chapel, involving members of the
group. The Pilgrimage Service with a sermon followed supper, and a
procession of our Lady and healing ministries after Benediction.
“On Sunday we were able to choose between the Parish Church and
St Mary South Creake for the Eucharist. After lunch we prayed and
sang hymns together before the Sprinkling at the Holy Well. We made
our way home, refreshed by the Holy Spirit and very well fed.”

Volunteer needed
for the Friends of
Cathedral Music
This hugely important body,
which sustains the work of
choral foundations nationally,
is seeking a volunteer
representative in the Southwell
and Nottingham Diocese to
keep the traditions of cathedral
worship at the forefront of
people’s minds.
The job falls into four areas:
to be the point of contact for
members in the Diocese;
 recruit new members;
 to support the current
membership;
 to offer encouragement to
the music team at the
Minster.
We invite anyone who feels
that they could fill this
ambassadorial role both at the
Minster and throughout the
diocese to consider offering
themselves for this important
position.
Any expenses incurred in FCM
matters will be reimbursed.
Do please contact:
Michael Wiles
FCM Diocesan
Representative Coordinator,
if you think you might be
interested.
The Bishop of Sherwood, the Rt Revd Tony Porter, joined
Archbishop of York Dr John Sentamu in welcoming 36
delegates from parishes across the north of England to a Sports
Ministry Day.
Guests at the event included former footballer and manager Joe
Royle, now Everton FC’s Professional Development Co-ordinator,
Carolyn Radford, CEO of Mansfield Town Football Club, and
Graham Daniels, Director of Christians in Sport.
Bishop Tony Porter, who is the Archbishops’ Sport Ambassador, said:
“The purpose of the day was to see sports ministry become part of the
DNA of parishes and dioceses in the north of England.
“It was particularly thrilling to hear from Joe Royle and Carolyn
Radford of the significance of chaplaincy in their work in professional
football.”
The event was held at Bishopthorpe Palace, Yorkshire, the home of
Archbishop Sentamu, who said: “Whatever sport you follow or play,
it gives a great opportunity to work towards a common goal and to
strive for excellence in the gifts that God has given us.
“In his letters, the Apostle Paul often uses the discipline and
dedication needed to excel at sport to help us picture what a life of
discipleship looks like. As Churches we should celebrate all that sport
has to offer and its importance in local communities, as well as
worshipping the God who has made our enjoyment of sport possible.”

The following article isreproduced from “The Lantern”which is the Parish Magazine ofthe Church of St John the Baptist,Pinetown, KwaZulu Natal,Republic of South Africa. EdwardPines writes:
It was in 2003 that a link was
formally established between
our Diocese of Natal and the
Diocese of Southwell &
Nottingham in England. During
that occasion we at St John’s in
Pinetown were included in the
meetings and discussions that
were held with the visiting teams
from the UK as to what would
being part of such a ‘link’
involve.
It was much later in 2012 when
Revd Zoe Burton came to our
parish on a placement as part of
her training, at this time Zoe was
curate in the parish of St Peter’s
situated in Ravenshead. During
Zoe’s placement with us in
Pinetown she stayed with Ingrid
and myself in our home and this
provided opportunities to learn
about “what the church was doing
in the Diocese in which she was
serving and in particular the small
town of Ravenshead”. It was
following on from this contact
and sharing that the idea of
forming a ‘link’ between our two
parishes was discussed with the
folk in the parish at Ravenshead.
The result of these initial
discussions was that a group from
St Peter’s congregation came over
in 2013, this group included Revd
Zoe Burton accompanied on this
occasion by her husband Nigel.
During their time with us in
Pinetown this group of six were
given an intense exposure to life
and work in the parish. Ingrid and
I provided accommodation on this
occasion to Tony Machin, a
retired magistrate. The group
expressed a special interest in the
outreach work being provided by
the people of St John’s to those in
the community suffering from
AIDS. It was during this visit of
the parish group from St Peter’s
that we discussed in more depth
as to what could strengthen and
enable a formal link between the
two parishes. The result of these
discussion was that we made a
decision to formaliseThe Link,
Tony Machin took on the role of
being the link contact in
Ravenshead and I took on a
similar role in Pinetown.
While on a holiday visit to the
UK in 2015 Ingrid and I had an
opportunity to visit the parish in
Ravenshead over a long weekend.
It was great to meet the “team”
and reconnect with them. I was
asked to preach the sermon at the
main service in St Peter’s on
Sunday morning and that evening
our host, Tony & Gill Machin,
arranged in their home a “meet &
greet” event which provided a
wonderful opportunity for sharing
with The Link. The evening also
provided a special opportunity to
reconnect with Bishop Tony, who
was a surprise guest that evening.
Ravenshead folk have supported
our AIDS outreach by sending out
knitted squares that are joined
together making colourful
blankets. They have also provided
baby clothes.
