SITUATED NORTH OF HONG KONG THE AREA SHENZHEN BECAME CHINA’S MOST SUCCESSFUL SPECIAL ECONOMIC ZONE. ITS RISE STARTED IN LATE 1979, BEFORE WHICH IT WAS ONLY A MARKET TOWN CALLED SHAM CHUN HUI. SHENZHEN METROPOLITAN AREA HAS A POPULATION OF OVER 18 MILLION. AT PRESENT, THE AVERAGE AGE IN SHENZHEN IS LESS THAN 30 YEARS.
PERFECT CONDITIONS FOR A RESTART AFTER A LONG SUMMER BREAK.
SHENZHEN

Breaking the long summer
drought, NIGHT of the JUMPs
returns with the very best of Free-
style Motocross competition to the
Chinese economic metropolis of
Shenzhen.
The whole event was in dan-
ger when the building crew was
informed that the container with
all judging equipment, bikes,
ramps etc. are blocked by chinese
customs due to organic materials
located in the container. Within 48
hours and the help of local gover-
ment the container was release
and construction starts.
With 10 of the world’s best riders
starting qualification in the Shenz-
hen Sports Centre, one of the
most exciting riders to return to
the World Championship com-
petitions was Dany Torres. With
an impressive run of unique flip
combos, the Spaniard flew into the
finals. However pre-event problems
outside of anyone’s control plagued
some of the brightest stars, with
Libor Podmol having his luggage go
missing, to Adelberg’s hard crash
during training.
However, it appeared even the
current World Championship leader,
David Rinaldo, had even worse pro-
blems. With his bags missing also
from the airlines for at least an extra
day, Rinaldo missed practise and
eventually had to borrow his team
mate Podmol’s riding gear and bike
parts from other riders to even be
able to ride the competition and
eventually qualify. Rounding out
CUSTOMS BLOCKS THE BIKES FOR 72 HOURS DUE TO DIRT

the top 6 final was the German rider, Hannes
Ackermann, who stomped his first ever Volt
body varial to dirt in qualifying in 3rd position.
Motivated by the preliminary round competiti-
on, Dany Torres showed some extra style and
turned down his way to his victory in the Life-
Proof Best Whip Contest in front of Massimo
Bianconcini and the other 4 starters. After the
intermission, it was Italy’s Massimo Biancon-
cini who would exact revenge on Spain in the
Maxxis Highest Air competition, narrowly bea-
ting Jose Miralles, even as both riders missed
the bar at 9.5 metres. Bianconcini took the win
from one less failed attempts at the 9.0 metre
height.
The final six riders would light up the sky over
the 15 million inhabitants of Shenzhen as they
intensified their charge for the top of the podi-
um. Dany Torres stepped up with an Oxecu-
tioner to Double Grab backflip combination in
his Double Up, however even after an almost
flawless run, was relegated to 6th position.
Adelberg’s thunder from down under was also
not enough to get close to the podium, even
after an impeccable run and finishing with a
California Roll to No-hander lander combo.
Coming into Shenzhen and sitting in second
place in the overall World Championship ran-
kings, Maikel Melero has won 4 from the past
8 events, but even with his experience and
huge tricks he wasn’t able to make it to the
podium. With some uncharacteristic errors
and in 4th place, he showed a few chinks
in his armour, when he had seemed almost
untouchable at the start of the season and
now puts a small damper on his second World
Championship title fight.

One of the biggest improvements we have
seen in NIGHT of the JUMPs roster was
from the German rider Hannes Ackermann
who stood on the podium for the very first
time in his World Championship career.
After an incredible qualification round,
Hannes put together a supersized run of
One-hand seat grab Flips, 360 Nac’s and
his new Volt, which although was a little
sketchy, he held onto it and showed that
he’s writing a new chapter in his career as
he took 3rd place.
The man with the biggest disadvantages
leading into the event and current World
Championship leader, David Rinaldo be-
gan with a Volt, and very soon after then
stuck a California Roll on an unfamiliar
bike, and then finished with a huge Double
Grab backflip in the Double Up. And while
he looked like the sure winner, things
would quickly change again when Libor
Podmol stepped up, full of confidence and
stomped his own Volt and side-saddle
take-off California Roll, but with a cleaner
run and more flow.
The Championship leaderboard has
been shaken up with Libor’s victory and
Melero’s absence from the podium. Ri-
naldo is still looking strong, however after
the first night of competition in Shenzhen,
a second night to go and a handful of
rounds left in the 2015 season, the race
to the end appears to have opened some
new contenders for the title.

FREESTYLE MX WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
HIGHLIGHTS DAY !
18
Saturday produced an incredible
end to the 10th round of NIGHT
of the JUMPs FIM Freestyle
MX World Championships. Like
the previous day, the 10 World
Cup opponents from five nations
faced off again in the Shenzhen
Sports Centre, but with an air
of confidence going into the se-
cond day of competition.
Unlike the first day of competi-
tion, most riders changed their
Freestyle runs in the hope of
picking up a place in the final 6
showdown. Brice Izzo took ad-
vantage of his new Barhop to
SuperFlip combination to make
it through to the final, while the
newly crowned NIGHT of the
JUMPs European Champion
Petr Pilat arrived with a comple-
tely new qualifying run to stamp
his authority on the top 6. Libor
Podmol, Maikel Melero, David
Rinaldo and Rob Adelberg roun-
ded out the final in similar fa-
shion to the first night in Shenz-
hen.
One of the riders missing the
top 6 was the previous night’s
surprise 3rd place finalist,
Germany’s Hannes Ackermann,
who had a Volt the day before,
but with a bent clutch lever and
missing second gear he wouldn’t
make it to the final. Worse still,
another of the finalists from the
previous day was Dany Torres.
The Spaniard failed on his Cliff-
hanger Flip to Lazyboy Flips in
the double-double line and only
finished in 10th position. How-
ever Torres held his head high
by taking out the LifeProof Best
Whip competition for the second
day in a row.
The Maxxis Highest Air was like
a blue print repeat from the pre-
vious day. Massimo Biancon-
cini beat Jose Miralles again at
the 9.00 metre height when he
breezed over on his first attempt
and Jose requiring two attempts
to get to the next height of 9.50
metres. After both failed at 9.50
metres, Massimo won on the
countback of completed att-
empts.

The final 6 started with Rob Adel-
berg, who was frustrated with the
outcome of yesterday’s final. Today
Rob had extra motivation to produce
the cleanest run he could, and after
extending every trick as perfectly as
possible including the California Roll
to finish the Double Up. With his ex-
tra push, it was enough for Rob to
improve his position by 3 places to
third place and reaching the podi-
um. Petr Pilat opened with a solid
run, however the Double-Double line
would claim a victim in Pilat, when he
hesitated on landing a side-saddle
flip, and then putting extra pressure
on the next jump when he made an
uncharacteristic mistake of accom-
plishing only a Heelclicker to save
an otherwise dead sailor. Brice Izzo
was also unable to capitalise on his
Top 6 final and couldn’t improve his
position.
After a setback on Friday in 4th po-
sition, the reigning World Champion,
PETR PILAT CHAN-GED HIS RUN AND WENT TO FINALS ON SATURDAY

Maikel Melero was able to battle his way
back to close to the top spot with his Dou-
ble Grab Flip and ‘Melero Roll’ to make
2nd place. But it wasn’t enough to fend
off his main challenger to his title, David
Rinaldo. After his luggage finally arrived
in the afternoon, David was able to throw
down a much better run than last night
when he was borrowing parts and gear
from a handful of his fellow competitors.
With the California Roll, Volt and Double
Hart Attack flip, Rinaldo secured his spot
on the hot seat by only a few points.
With only one rider left who could crash
the party, Libor Podmol was set to turn
Shenzhen on fire after his previous night’s
win. But as quickly as the hype was built
for Podmol, the wheels fell off the wagon
and he could only complete one trick be-
fore retiring due to mechanical problems.
On his first jump of the run, as he stood
upon his seat for the Surfer take-off to
Tsunami Flip, his subframe cracked and
wrecked any chance of repeating his win.
David Rinaldo took the victory on the se-
cond night and now leads with 12 points
with 172 points in total. Followed by the
reigning FIM World Champion Maikel Me-
lero with 160 points and Rob Adelberg in
3rd position in the overall standings.
It won’t be until the 7th of November be-
fore the next World Championship points
will be awarded, when the FMX riders will
meet again in Caraguatatuba (Sao Pau-
lo), Brazil to push for the final run at the
overall World Championship title. <<
