Asked to do a Stable Tour, Rick Schosberg, didn’t hesitate, turning at his tack room door and walking, “Let’s do that.”

Schosberg started at the first stall and walked the length of the shedrow, talking about his Saratoga string and a few horses at Belmont Park.

From White Plains, N.Y., Schos-berg trained 1995 2-year-old champi-on Maria’s Mon and Grade 1 stakes winners Affirmed Success, As Indicat-ed and Mossflower. The Cornell Uni-versity graduate has been stabled in the low barn near the corner of Clare Court and Greentree for 20 years.

“I think Maria’s Mon was in this barn. It’s been a long time,” he said. “Back in the day, we filled the whole thing up, lately, we’ve been sharing be-cause we just don’t have the numbers. Eighteen to 25 is a good number for us, it’s very manageable for me, I like to manage the whole thing. I’ve got some really cool owners and this is a great barn, quiet, it’s a really cool place.”

Schosberg talked to The Special’s Sean Clancy about his 18-horse string.

Champagne Therapy: “We had expected her to run really well in her first start, she ran into Ryerson’s filly who ran great. I think when that filly got away from her early, that blew her mind a bit. She’s delicate, mentally. Physically, she’s very fast. I was disap-pointed but not disheartened.”

Saturday Appeal: “Won our first race up here, he won sprinting which I didn’t think was possible. He hadn’t won sprinting for two years, I just needed to get a race into him and he blew their doors in and blew me away. I’ll probably run him back in the two-other-than optional, the same race he was second in twice last year.”

Southern Sunshine: “Ran in the race after the Whitney. Ran a dyna-mite race, got parked wide and fin-ished third. We claimed her at Aque-duct, we had Dr. Ducharme do a wind surgery on her. Nice filly, diverse, can run in the slop, on the turf, we’re hap-py with her.”

Elusive Talmo: “New York-bred maiden, trying to figure himself out. Ran a real good fourth in his first start sprinting. Bred for grass, mental-ly, he’s trying to figure the game out. He’s a little slow on the uptake but he’s on the road to figuring it out. Got some talent. In the long run, he’ll be a pretty nice turf horse.”

Myfourchix: “She was our super-star here last year, ran a great second to our other filly. She was coming off a little bit of a layoff, she’ll have them at her mercy later in the meet. She loves it here. Nice future, nice pedi-gree, beautiful personality and a gor-

geous filly. I absolutely loved her in the sale, I had to have her, we paid 90 for her and she’s been well worth it.”

Crescent Street: “He took a long time to figure this game out. He came to me as a fat 2-year-old. He broke his maiden downstate for 40, we put him in an allowance race and he got beat a neck. Strictly grass.”

Great Lady: “This is a Girolamo filly that hasn’t run yet. I think he’s pretty darn hot sire. She was kind of like Myfourchix, she walked out of the stall, had to have her. She’s got the personality of a good Lab.”

Awesome News: “Our hero, or our heroine, from Sunday. Bred by Mrs. (Vivien) Malloy, Edition Farm, who I train for, and bought by Black Swan at the yearling sale here. She’s done absolutely nothing wrong. Darn nice filly with black type in her fu-ture.”

Watergate: “Good solid little New York-bred. We claimed him at Aque-duct, we haven’t won with him yet, he ran a good race in the allowance race, got in trouble, wasn’t beaten far. I think he’ll develop into a good New York-bred in the fall. Cool personal-ity, he’s got that white eye that either makes people jump or they’re enam-ored by him.”

Sandy’z Slew: “He speaks for himself, he’s trying to win for the third year in a row. He’s a cool horse. Diverse horse, turf sprinter but if it comes off you’re in just as good of shape. He got beat a length here earli-er in the meet. He’s a neat horse, loves it up here. He’s bred to go long, but I ran him a mile and he got beat 39 lengths. We did a tie-forward on him. I took him to Cornell myself, sat in on the surgery and the whole thing. Since then, he’s been a different horse. Dr. Ducharme has four wins of this horse on his office wall.”

Run To Mama: “I was excited to run her Monday, I told people not to leave her out of the gimmicks (she was fourth at 37-1). This is a filly Mrs. Malloy bred and sold, then bought back late in her career to keep her in her broodmare band. She’s likes it up here, she’s gained weight up here.”

Andrew’s Got Zip: “Fast sprint-er. Broke his maiden in 9 flat against New York-breds, we’re looking to run him back here going five and a half.”

“Bill Boland rode a brilliant race on War Command. He just let him gallop along. He got to the head of the stretch and put his head in the horse’s mane and smacked him twice and went in rhythm with him, by then, you know how slow you’re going after 2 miles, it looked like his arms were going as slow as his legs, then the very last thing he went ‘Yah’ and put his head on the wire. We had him slowed down from that long work and those 3-mile gallops. It’s a wonder he took it all. When I look back on it, the things that surprise me a lot in my whole life is how I thought up these things, like working them so fast, or so far, what was I thinking about? Like, War Command in the 2 mile race, I always thought a horse needed to do it in the morning if he’s going to do it in the afternoon. I galloped him three miles one day, three miles the next…where did I get the idea to do that?”

BY TOM LAWPat Costello expected good things when he

showed up at the Fasig-Tipton Sales Paddocks Tuesday night.

He knew Hip 168, a colt by Street Cry from a repeatedly proven graded stakes producing family, was on the short lists of most of the major players in town for the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale of se-lected yearlings. He’d seen them look at the colt, come back for a second look, sometimes a third, Fasig-Tipton/Photos by Z

The leader on the second night of the sales was a Street Cry colt out of a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Honey Ryder.

and he’d seen the veterinarians come do their job to either give the thumbs up or thumbs down to their clients.

What he didn’t expect is what hap-pened, the colt selling for $1.4 mil-lion to highlight an extremely strong final session of the 97th edition of the Saratoga sale that posted significant increases in total sales, average price and median Tuesday night.

“No way, nowhere near that,” Costello said after John Ferguson, primary agent for Sheikh Moham-med bin Rashid al Maktoum, signed the ticket for the Kentucky-bred colt. “He was awful popular back at the barn and he had 10 scopes or so. The thing that impressed me was he got better every day he was at the sale. Nice horse. I’m delighted for the own-ers, they’re lovely, lovely people.”

Costello sold the colt under his Paramount Sales banner for Ann Mc-Brayer’s Keene Ridge Racing. Mc-Brayer bred the colt in partnership with Sheikh Mohammed’s Darley, so the purchase essentially was buying

out a foal share. The colt was the lone seven-figure

sale during the final session, which was extremely strong and continued the momentum established during Monday’s opener and took it a few notches higher.

Fasig-Tipton reported sales on 75 of the 86 yearlings offered Tuesday

for $25,010,000, a massive 66.5 per-cent increase over the final session last year when 50 yearlings sold for $15,017,000. The session’s aver-age price was also a sharp increase, $333,467 compared to $300,340, a bump of 11 percent. Median rose 5.3 percent to $250,000.

The banner second session spurred

huge increases for the two days. When the receipts were added up they showed a 40.5 percent gain in total sales (146 yearlings sold for $46,755,000), a 10.4 percent rise in average price ($322,448), a 5.3 per-cent boost in median ($250,000) and a remarkably low buy-back rate of 15.2 percent.

“I’m rarely speechless following a sale and I’m almost speechless,” said Boyd Browning Jr., Fasig-Tipton pres-ident. “We probably would have been unrealistic coming into the sale to have dreamt or hoped we’d be up 40 percent in gross and have the average increase 10 percent . . . and combined with the 15 percent RNA rate is just, it was a tremendous horse sale over-all.

“Tonight was electric again. You saw a tremendous group of buyers on these sales grounds since Friday, so the last four days, we hoped they would be rewarded with lots of grad-ed success, Grade 1 success. We hope that the cover in 2017, 2018, we have a problem with ‘how are we going to put all these horses on the cover that came from the 2015 sale?’ ”

Browning got emotional during his post-sale remarks when he talked about the staff at Fasig-Tipton, which he says works all year recruiting top prospects for the Saratoga sale and the company’s other auctions as well as helping bring togeth-er the game’s most well-heeled and savvy buyers.

“I’ve got to give kudos to our team,” Browning said, his voice breaking up. “This isn’t easy. There’s a lot of work that goes into it by a lot of people. And my hat’s off to them. We’ve got a hell of a team. And they genuinely care about the people we do business with. So it’s good. It’s a relief. There’s a lot of pressure on us up here. It’s mostly self-imposed, but we take our responsibility seriously from the people that are trusting their horses with us. We want to do a good job and it’s re-warding to see both buyers and sellers at the end of a sale feeling like they got value for their horse and had a legitimate chance to buy quality horses.”

Ferguson went for quality when he bid for the session-topping colt from his usual spot behind the sales pavilion. The colt was

one of 11 yearlings Ferguson purchased over the two sessions and one of two in the top six most expensive horses overall.

“The horses have been making good prices, but they deserve to,” said Fergu-son, who signed for $5,425,000 in year-lings. “It’s very hard to breed a horse to be as good-looking as the horses here, and breeders deserve to get paid for them.”

Ferguson said the session-topping colt was “very athletic” and “by a sire who’s no longer with us, but has bred many champions so it made sense.”

A few minutes after the Street Cry colt sold bloodstock agent Steve Young went to $800,000 to purchase Hip 170, a daugh-ter of Malibu Moon that wound up as the sale’s most expensive filly.

Bred by Newtown Anner Stud and con-signed by John Sikura’s Hill ‘n’ Dale Sales Agency, the filly is out of the stakes-pro-ducing Tabasco Cat mare Red Hot Bertie. From the family of graded stakes winners Allamerican Bertie and Hurricane Bertie, the filly is a half-sister to stakes winner Red Hot Buddha and multiple graded-stakes placed filly Cue The Moon.

Demand for Tapit yearlings continued Tuesday night after two brought seven figures Monday. Hip 160, a filly named

Tappin Time out of stakes winner Princess Arabel-la consigned by Lane’s End, sold to Everett Dob-son’s Cheyenne Stables for $750,000; and Hip 182, a colt out of a full-sister to Grade 1 winner and $2,049,845-earner Commentator consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, sold for $700,000 to Al Shaqab Racing.

Roy and Gretchen Jackson got involved early when they went to $600,000 to purchase Hip 126, a colt by 2011’s leading freshman sire and success-ful juvenile sire Scat Daddy. Bred by Tommy Town Thoroughbreds and consigned by Alfred Nuckols Jr.’s Hurstland Farm, agent, the colt is out of the stakes-placed Unbridled’s Song mare Miss Dolce.

Ahmed Zayat’s Zayat Stables, owner and breed-er of Triple Crown winner American Pharoah, got involved early when it purchased a colt by Scat Daddy, Hip 115, for $475,000. Consigned by Fran-cis and Barbara Vanlangendonck’s Summerfield, agent for Stonestreet Bred & Raised, the colt is out of the winning Fusaichi Pegasus mare Kauai Calls, a half sister to multiple graded stakes winner Old Fashioned.

The strong tone of the night was set right away as Hip 106, a colt by Speightstown named Speight-stown Brave and the first yearling through the ring, brought $475,000 from Mayberry Farm. Consigned

by Lane’s End, agent, the colt is out of the unraced A.P. Indy mare Indyan Giving from the family of champion Fleet Indian and $1,177,946-earner Cherokee’s Boy.

A third $475,000 yearling sold during the early portion of the session when Maverick Racing, the

buying arm of Kenny Troutt’s WinStar Farm, and China Horse Club teamed up to purchase Hip 118, a colt by Scat Daddy out of the Woodman mare Lerici.

Consigned by Gainesway, agent, the colt is from the family of graded stakes winner and Grade 1 Travers Stakes runner-up Grasshopper and the late top sire Sportin’ Life.

Three yearlings brought seven figures over the two days and 24 yearlings sold for $500,000 or more, compared to three for $1 million or more and 17 that brought $500,000 or more.

The buzz before the sale was that this was one of the best groups of yearlings on the grounds in years, possibly ever.

The American Pharoah factor cannot be dis-counted either, Browning said, with excitement for the Triple Crown winner spilling out into all seg-ments of the industry.

“It’s a whole lot more fun selling horses in 2015 than it was in 2010,” Browning said. “So part of it’s market conditions and as people develop confi-dence both buyers and sellers, it feeds off each oth-er. Hey, people feel good about the game right now. The game’s excited. We’ve had a hell of a run in the Triple Crown in 2015. There’s American Pharoah fever that’s really infectious throughout the indus-try and I think there’s a more positive pulse to this business and our industry in several years. It’s re-freshing, encouraging and energizing to all partici-pants in the industry.”

BY TERESA GENAROLast summer, Kentucky-based

trainer Brad Cox brought a string of horses to Saratoga, and it worked out so well that he’s back again this year, with a stable of eight based at the Oklahoma training track.

“The money is really good and we had a good meet last year,” he said by phone from Kentucky, where he’d gone to check on his 45 horses at Churchill Downs. “We were ex-perimenting last year to see how it worked out.”

From 14 starts last summer, Cox had three wins, two seconds, and a third. So far this year, he’s got two wins and a third from eight starters.

“Last year, I brought a different type of horse here,” he said. “A lot

of maiden claimers and claimers. This year, I’ve got more allowance hors-es and stakes horses. I don’t know if they’re stakes horses at Saratoga, but they’re stakes horses at other tracks.”

Cox grew up in Louisville, Ky., and started talking about being a trainer as a child. Later, he worked for Burt Kessinger and Jimmy Baker before a job as an assistant to Dallas Stewart. Cox, 35, started training on his own in 2004 (one win from four starts) and won 20 races the next year. His horses won 75 races and earned $2.4 million in 2014 and are on pace to pass both of those numbers this year, led by graded stakes winners Choco-late Ride and Call Pat.

Cox has been a little disappointed with his Saratoga stakes horses so far this year, but hopes for a rebound.

“Nice Number was making her second start off a long layoff,” he said of the 4-year-old filly who fin-ished last in the Fasig-Tipton Waya Stakes. “She should benefit a lot from that race and come back and improve a good bit.”

Of Twirling Cinnamon, eighth in the Sanford, he said, “If I run him back up here, I may try him on the grass. He came out of the race in good shape.”

And while the big purses here are an undeniable draw, Cox sees other benefits, particularly for his horses, in

spending a summer in Saratoga.“Being there is a little easier on them,”

he said. “The weather is better up north than it is in Kentucky. And we’ve got the option of training on the main track or the Oklahoma, or breezing on the turf. It’s pretty horse-friendly.”

Breeder in Honor Code’s cornerFor Des Ryan, Honor Code’s win in

the Whitney Saturday was as poignant as it was thrilling.

The farm manager at Dell Ridge Farm in Lexington, Ky., where Hon-or Code was bred, Ryan purchased the horse’s dam, Serena’s Cat, with Dell Ridge’s Frank Justice, in 2003 for $1.4 million as a weanling. The mare brought plenty of pedigree to the proj-ect as a granddaughter of champion and Hall of Famer Serena’s Song.

“We try to buy well-bred foals,” he said Sunday. “She was one of them. We raced her and we bred her, and she’s been very good to us.”

By Storm Cat out of the Mr. Pros-pector mare Serena’s Tune, Serena’s Cat won four races including a minor stakes at Monmouth Park, but has been a star as a broodmare, first producing graded stakes winner Noble Tune (Un-bridled’s Song), then Honor Code, and then, last year, a Tapit filly that set a record for a weanling when she was purchased by Bridlewood Farm for $3 million at Keeneland November.

“Serena’s Cat had a couple of little issues [as a racehorse],” said Ryan, “but she had a lot of talent and she was fast. I bought her for her pedigree, and everything else was a bonus.”

Honor Code was among the last horses bred by Dell Ridge’s owner Jus-tice with his wife Mattie before he died at 79 in 2012. Ryan said the dark bay ridgling was among Justice’s favorites.

“It’s sad that he’s not here to see it,” said Ryan. “He had a really strong place in his heart for this horse in par-ticular. When Honor Code was a foal, Mr. Justice would always visit him. This has been great for Mrs. Justice.”

Dell Ridge still owns part of Hon-or Code, though Mattie Justice didn’t make the trip to Saratoga to see the Whitney. She and her children have kept the farm and its breeding opera-tion going.

“It would have been easy for people to move on,” reflected Ryan. “Not everyone has the same passion. We’re proud of this horse. Mr. Justice is looking down at us and he’s got a little sparkle in his eye. It’s very special.”

Round Table ReportThe first Jockey Club Round Table on Matters

Pertaining to Racing under the leadership of Stuart Janney III, elected chair of the organization follow-ing the resignation of Ogden Mills Phipps after a tenure of more than 30 years in that role, offered updates on a variety of The Jockey Club’s initia-tives, then presented a series of testimonials about the value of federal oversight of horse racing’s med-ication policies and practices.

The Jockey Club has long threatened to support federal legislation that would remove oversight from individual state jurisdictions, and, dissatisfied with what it characterizes as too-slow progress on medication reform on the state level, the organiza-tion has put its support behind legislation intro-duced last month by New York and Kentucky legis-lators in the House of Representatives, Paul Tonko and Andy Barr respectively.

The bill would create a uniform, national med-ication program for Thoroughbred racing, estab-

lishing an independent, non-governmental authori-ty such as the United States Anti-Doping Agency to implement that program.

Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear; World Anti-Dop-ing Agency chair and Olympic gold medal winner Edwin Moses; and The Jockey Club president and chief operating officer Jim Gagliano all spoke in favor of the legislation. Gagliano also announced that New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand will in-troduce a similar bill in the Senate.

Dr. Kathy Anderson, president-elect of the Amer-ican Association of Equine Practitioners, outlined a 10-point plan for medication reform that includes a resolution to investigate alternatives to furosemide, commonly known as Lasix, as a way to treat ex-ercise-induced pulmonary bleeding in racehorses. Once those alternatives have been identified, the

AAEP will support the end of race-day administra-tion of the medication.

Other presentations on less controversial topics included the announcement of a new partnership between Equibase and Stats, a sports technology, content, and data company, to create a new inter-active handicapping tool that will permit bettors to back-test handicapping theories and to select races where those theories are most likely to be in play.

Also announced was that beginning in 2017, all horses registered with The Jockey Club will be re-quired to be microchipped, a practice in wide use in many international racing jurisdictions.

Notes: Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. tops the leaderboard with 25 wins. John Velazquez and Javier Castel-lano follow with 22 and 21 respectively, and then there’s a big drop to Joel Rosario in fourth with 11 wins . . . The New York Racing Association an-nounced Monday that this Saturday, Aug. 15, will be Allen Jerkens Day at the track, to honor the Hall of Fame trainer who died in March. The day will include a race in honor of Jerkens and video trib-utes to the much-beloved man known as The Chief. Concession stands will offer a 10 percent discount throughout the day on Coors Light, a favorite bev-erage of Jerkens . . . On Thursday, Aug. 13, Sara-toga’s Equitas Realty at 38 High Rock Avenue will present the work of equine artist Frankie Flores at a fundraiser to support Backstretch Employees Ser-vice Team. The evening will feature a silent auction along with the artists in the backstretch worker community.

BY TOM LAWJess Ritson sat still, straight in the

saddle, looking toward the long grand-stand to her right. Cary Street was still, too, quiet, calm, ears pricked, first look-ing at the people clicking iPhone photos and then off in the same direction that caught his rider’s gaze.

Brendan Walsh, fresh from the short walk from his barn to the gap near the quarter-pole, stepped down in the ditch, then back up to higher ground, and asked, “He doesn’t look too good does he?”

The question was purely sarcastic, since Cary Street looked the picture three days before his first start since early June in today’s $100,000 Bird-stone Stakes at Saratoga Race Course. The dominating winner of the Grade 2 Las Vegas Marathon early on last year’s

Breeders’ Cup Friday card at Santa Anita didn’t always look this good. The 6-year-old gelding by Smart Jones has certainly come a long way since Walsh claimed him for $10,000 in early Feb-ruary 2013.

“He owes us nothing,” Walsh said earlier just outside his barn, after getting off a horse he trains, hanging up his tack and getting Cary Street ready to go to the track in a late set a little after 9 a.m. “We claimed him for 10 grand, at Gulfstream. Ten. Imagine that? He was a non-three life and he got beat the day I claimed him. I ran him back and got him beat as well, for the 10 again. Then he won for 10 at Calder, same kind of race, non-three life.” Tod Marks

Cary Street looks to get his 2015 back on track in today’s Birdstone.

After that win, going 1 mile and racing on or close to the lead en route to a 1-length win in 1:40.08, Walsh started to think about the future for Cary Steet. His first thought was, “this horse is OK” and that he could have some fun.

He’s certainly done that thanks to Cary Street, who opened some doors for the native of County Cork, Ireland, who took out his trainer’s license in 2011 af-ter growing up in the game, attending jockey school back home, working for Darley and Godolphin and then Eddie Kenneally in the U.S.

Walsh is amazed at the good fortune that’s come his way since Cary Street came from way back early to win the Marathon by 9 1/4 lengths. Sometimes all it takes is one horse for a trainer to get some breaks. Cary Street is that horse for Walsh.

“I still own half of him, which is great. He’s paid a lot of bills,” said Walsh, whose partner is Marc Detam-pel. “He’s done so much for me. You can’t put a price on what he’s done. He’s got us out there and I’ve picked up a lot of people because of what he did last year. The barn went from a 20-horse barn to 40, 50 this spring. I had Worldly the year before and he ran in the (now defunct Breeders’ Cup) Marathon and he was a very good horse. This horse is more of a staying horse.”

Cary Street is the 6-1 co-fourth choice for the Birdstone, the longest flat stakes race on the Saratoga

schedule at 1 3/4 miles. It’s the perfect race for a stayer, and Walsh knows

his horse can stay. Now the trainer just hopes Cary Street can return

to the form he showed last year when he won three times and finished second or third five times in 10 starts. He hasn’t been close in two starts this year – finishing seventh of eight in the Grade 2 Elkhorn on the grass at Keeneland and eighth of 11 in the Grade 2 Brooklyn on the dirt at Belmont.

“It’s the first time this year where we had his cir-cumstances right,” Walsh said of today. “We’ve got the mile-and-three-quarters on the dirt. We tried him on the grass at Keeneland, there was an allowance race that we tried to get him ready for that. A mile-and-half or maybe a mile-and-five. They wrote it but it didn’t fill. So then we were kind of stuck.

“We had him ready so we gave him a shot in the Elkhorn, try him on the grass. I was on the back foot because I’d worked him on the grass at Palm Mead-ows two years ago and he just didn’t work any good on it. He’s not the greatest worker in the world any-way. So I was thinking maybe I thought it was that. We took a shot and it didn’t work. Then we tried the Brooklyn. In an ideal world if we were to do it again we’d probably just give him half the year off and con-centrate on having him ready for now and the fall.”

Walsh likes what he’s seeing from Cary Street since he’s been in Saratoga. He breezed him twice, most re-cently riding the gelding himself in 1:01.45 for 5 fur-longs in company Aug. 2.

Cary Street trained well Monday with Ritson aboard. After standing for about five minutes near the gap he got to work, galloped within himself on the main track and looked just about the same coming off the gap on the backstretch as he did walking to the track.

“He looks pretty sharp for him,” Walsh said as Cary Street and Ritson galloped past, a couple paths off the inside. “I probably made a mistake when I brought him here two years ago. I worked him here once. He wasn’t

here long enough. It’s very important that you work here a few times. It’s a differ-ent track. Hopefully now we nailed it this year, having done a couple bits with him.”

Cary Street, a bit of a character around the barn who likes to jump around, groan and squeal from time to time, is doing well with the change of scenery. Walsh is based for a big chunk of the year at Churchill Downs, but he kept some of his horses in Lexington for much of the spring after the Keeneland meet closed at the end of April.

Moving around seems to suit Cary Street, who trained at Keeneland before last year’s Marathon. Walsh hopes to get back again for the Marathon, which will again be worth $200,000 and run on Breeders’ Cup Friday at 1 3/4 miles. If all goes well in the Birdstone, Cary Street’s logical final prep would be a defense of his title in the Grade 3 Greenwood Cup Sept. 7 at Parx Racing.

“It would be good if we can get that form back from last year,” Walsh said. “We’d go here, go back to Parx and then I think we’d go straight (to Keeneland). They’re hav-ing the Marathon back there again and it would be nice to win it on our home pad.

“Last year when we went to the Breeders’ Cup I moved horses to Keene-land about three or four weeks before we went. He loves a change. It kind of brightens him up. So I brought him over there and he did his last few works before the Breeders’ Cup at Keeneland. He loves Keeneland. If we do end up getting back there it will all be to our advantage.”

Cary Street is one of eight entered in the Birdstone, along with last year’s win-ner and 5-2 morning-line favorite Micro-manage. The 5-year-old son of Medaglia d’Oro is 2-for-11 since the 2014 Birdstone, the victories coming in back-to-back starts in December and January on the inner track at Aqueduct, and like Cary Street a well-beaten finisher in the Brooklyn June 6.

Turco Bravo is the 3-1 second choice despite coming off three straight losses for Gary Contessa. He won the Stymie in late March at Aqueduct and placed in three other route stakes prior to that ef-fort. Northeast Bound is 5-1 on the line off a victory going 1 3/16 miles May 7 at Churchill Downs for Dale Romans, while New York-bred allowance win-ner Gridley Here shares the 6-1 price of Cary Street. Village Warrior, Tacticus and Desvelo complete the field.

BY ANNISE MONTPLAISIRAmazing Anne proved herself

against the boys in Mondayw’s New York Stallion Series Cab Calloway Stakes, finishing second to Ex Ex Ex with a strong closing effort into a slow pace set by the eventual winner.

Trainer Tom Morley’s plan was to run the Freud filly back three days lat-er in Thursday’s Statue of Liberty di-vision of the Stallion Series. Tuesday morning Morley said he’d stick to the

plan as long as she continues to show good health.

“She ran an absolute eye-popper yesterday, it was a career best effort for the filly,” Morley said. “And she didn’t have a very hard race yester-day, and she has an extremely good constitution. She did only run really hard for a quarter of a mile yesterday, which kind of benefits a trainer com-Dave Harmon

ing back on a short rest when they’ve only had a spurt run in a race.”

Amazing Anne broke well and raced in fourth under Junior Alvarado early as Ex Ex Ex set crawling fractions of :24.64 and :50.18. She cut into the lead in the stretch but fell a half-length short.

The Statue of Liberty would be Amazing Anne’s third start of the meet if she runs, all within 19 days. She was third in a 1-mile turf allowance July 26.

“I won’t make a decision until 10 on Thursday morn-ing,” Morley said about running her on Thursday. “Every-thing has to go perfectly between now and then. She has to eat everything, drink everything, and I have to be very, very happy with the way she jogs out for me (Wednesday) morning.

“She’s a filly on the upgrade though, and when fillies are improving, they quite often continue to improve. You should, in my opinion, try and keep them improving be-cause they will maintain that form as 4-year-olds as well. An improving filly is a dangerous horse and she’s certainly improving at the moment.”

Amazing Anne will face eight other fillies if she runs, including the improving Psychiatry, who broke her maiden in her last start, and the Eddie Kenneally-trained Freudie Anne, who has demonstrated good form in both of her starts on the turf.

Freudie Anne won a 1 1/16-mile allowance-optional on

the turf in May at Belmont Park, leading the field from the start. Her most recent start was a fifth behind Dreamboat Annie in the off-the-turf Cupecoy’s Joy division of the Stal-lion Series June 21 at Belmont.

“Hoping we’ll be on the turf,” Kenneally said Tuesday morning as the rain poured down just outside his shedrow on the main track. “She’s won a stake on the dirt as well, but she’s 2-for-2 on the grass. I’m hoping we’ll be back on the grass. I imagine by Thursday we probably will.”

Freudie Anne ran in the Grade 3 Rachel Alexandra Stakes in February at Fair Grounds, but was pulled up midway through the race.

“It turns out she ran against some of the top fillies in the country that day,” Kenneally said of I’m A Chatterbox, Lovely Maria and Forever Unbridled, the first three in the Rachel Alexandra. “(She) had just won a New York-bred stake, but that was a little bit tougher assignment, and it might have been a little bit too tough for her. But she came back out of that and has run well since. I wanted to take a shot at a graded race. She had already won a restricted race and wanted to take a shot in a graded race, and it didn’t work out. Now she’s back with the New York-bred company and I think she fits in this spot well.”

Dreamboat Annie was in the midst of a promising year until she was ninth in the Coronation Cup earlier in the meet. She won three times with a third in four career starts for Leah Gyarmati before the 5 ½-furlong Coronation Cup.

“She had a rough trip the other day, I’m not sure what was going on there,” Gyarmati said. “I was thinking 5 ½

(furlongs) would be great because you could turn her loose and it would automatically set up with horses in front of her. It didn’t seem to go the way I planned. I’m not sure that two turns will either, it might be just as ugly.”

Dreamboat Annie, like Freudie Anne, Amazing Anne and three others in the Statue Of Liberty sired by Freud, won going 5 ½ and 6 furlongs on the grass and 7 furlongs on the dirt before her last start. She comes back on 10 days rest with John Velazquez named for the return call.

“I know there isn’t much time in between, but we tried to work on her having some long open gallops, so she wouldn’t be quite as sharp. So maybe she’ll relax a little,” Gyarmati said. “I don’t have a plan because last time I had a plan and it didn’t go as planned. I don’t know how it will work, maybe she’ll get the lead and relaxes or if she doesn’t, maybe that will be bet-ter, she can sit off it.”

The other three Freud fillies in the race are Psychiatry, Perfect Freud and Loon River. Cos-mic Serenity, Rockin Allil and Arietta complete the field.

Bona

Venture Stables

It rains differently in Saratoga. Louder, longer, more vertical, as if it comes from a higher sky. Tuesday, it fell long and steady, a wet soundtrack to a morning that came too soon after a long, late newspaper deadline.

So I listened. And thought. Why no gutters on your roofs, Sara-

toga? I’m sure it’s got something to do with snow and ice, but gutters are no longer new-fangled conveniences. Give ’em a try.

Does the rain affect the springs? Again, not my area of expertise but wouldn’t an excess of surface water running and flowing and zigging and zagging all over town wind up under-ground mixing with the mineral water? Might make the Big Red Spring taste better.

Do the horses mind? We say they don’t, but they must care about going out in it. Training, racing, pinning their ears and try-ing to outrun each other. There must be days where they’d rather just stay in their stalls and snooze.

How long does it take a jockey to get clean again after a day of riding on a sloppy track? One shower can’t get it all, can it?

Will the turf be good, yielding or soft today? I’m going with good, maybe yielding. It was pretty dry to start with, it drains better than your average lawn and there was some sun in the afternoon. Of course, it’s raining again . . . on the yielding side of good.

Should I re-do the Daily Racing Form Closer Looks on the Wednesday and Thursday jump races with soft(er) turf in mind? Sorry, but the rain helps frontrunners, Europeans and small horses with big, flat feet.

Why can’t someone invent a tarp and a wa-ter-management system for a turf course? We’ve got

Gore-Tex, 3-D printing, satellite navigation and E-Z Pass. And we can’t keep rain off grass?

Why is weather so extreme here anyway? I’m sure it’s the mountains or the barometric pressure or something but it can get wild – in a hurry.

If you had to rank Saratoga storms, could you? My list (maybe not in order) would include:

• Birdstone’s Travers in 2004. Angry storm. They canceled the last race and everyone – everyone – was drenched in the winner’s circle afterward.

• The day a friend from home pretended to take a shower, with his clothes on, while standing in a motel parking lot. We were kids and we laughed until our stomachs hurt.

• Holding Pattern’s Travers in 1974. Little Current was second and came from so far back it seemed like he rallied out of the trees between the track and Yaddo. Others in the field included the fil-

ly Chris Evert, Accipiter and Gold And Myrrh. The track looked like chocolate milk. The race is on YouTube, and you should watch it.

• Zabenz’s New York Turf Writers Cup in 2002. I remember standing in the paddock as the rain fell in long, wide swaths like something at Great Escape when the bucket tips over. The horse had come from Australia and fin-ished third seven days earlier. In one of the greatest backside mistakes of all-time, his groom asked Allen Jerkens if he could pony the horse around Clare Court one morning. The Chief said yes, he could, but they might be better off getting someone else.

• The day Hawaiki, I think, won for my father in 1983. I don’t remember rain, but I remember walking up the track toward the test barn, carrying buckets (we weren’t confident enough

to leave them there ahead of time) while wearing yellow pants and Docksides. The track was so slop-py, I took off my shoes, put them in a bucket, rolled up my pant legs and waded up the track.

• Hurricane Irene in 2011. The storm and flood-ing ravaged other parts of the East Coast, but spared Saratoga much of its wrath. The threat canceled racing the day after the Travers and we canceled the Sunday paper (since there would be no one to read it). I, bravely I like to tell myself, headed home to help move the oldest Clancy son Ryan into the Uni-versity of Maryland for his freshman year. I made it as far as Trenton, N.J., where flooded roads, fallen trees, and the EMERGENCY BROADCAST SIG-NAL (and it was not a test) on the car radio forced me to abandon the trip and spend the night.

Tuesday won’t make the list, but it was a nice day listen and think.

BROWN ADVISORY IS PROUD TO SUPPORTSARATOGA RACING

BALTIMORE WASHINGTON NEW YORK BOSTON CHAPEL HILL LONDON WILMINGTON

(800) 645-3923 www.brownadvisory.com

You’re holding a breakthrough edition of The Special. The first double issue, a Wednesday/Thurs-day paper. That’s part of the breakthrough, the physical act of combining two days into one paper – two days of previews, two days of handicapping, two days of Name of the Days, one Cup of Coffee.

The other part of the breakthrough is more meta-physical, the confidence to do it.

Tom Law, Joe and I held one of our rare editorial meetings after last year’s season and talked about what we could do differently, what we could do better, what we could do to lessen the madness, es-pecially, during the 12-day-in-a-row Survivor series that is sales week.

One less issue during sales week was one of the answers. It was simple, subtract one issue from the 35 we did last year. Thursday made sense. What was complicated was letting go of the all-or-noth-ing approach that had served us so well since the beginning. We needed to recognize that we have the ability, the foundation, the freedom to make choices (whoa, sound like Joel Osteen there for a minute). It’s not our nature to back off.

We set out in 2001, determined to prove we could publish a daily racing newspaper at Saratoga. Richard Bomze, who was in publishing, admired our moxie while thinking we were crazy – “Every day. Why every day? Try weekends.” As Nick Car-ras said the other day, “I looked at you guys and said, ‘That’s never going to work.’ ”

That was said often, as we delivered the paper on a disk to Staffield Printing down the Northway and drove bundles of papers back to Saratoga every night/morning.

It was said when we tried to sell eight-page news-papers, a dollar apiece was daunting for most. It was said when I wrote every article in the paper and Joe laid out every page (although the latter hasn’t changed). It was said when we didn’t mention re-

turning champion Countess Diana winning at the meet. We just didn’t get to it.

It was said when our Skidmore interns were more interested in writing about coffee shops and bike routes than the day’s races. It was said when the likes of Don Dean, Charlie Boden and Bill Per-son would tap on my window to wake me up from my car naps at the Morning Line Kitchen. It was said when we published our first “subscriber” list in edition #4 consisting of The Reading Room, Ken Ramsey, Tom Voss Stable, Chuck Simon, Mark Hennig, Lisa Lewis, Toadie Taylor, Lynn Whiting, Carl Nafzger, Al Stall, Ronnie Ebanks and the Sara-toga Sleigh Bed and Breakfast.

The first year, we published six days a week, be-cause we felt like we needed to prove it. Daily meant daily. Racing Monday? We’re publishing Monday.

Six days a week turned into five days a week after Travers weekend when we produced expansive pa-pers Saturday and Sunday – including a four-page Q & A with Gary Stevens when he was due to ride Point Given in the Travers– and made the decision to skip the next two Mondays.

Considering those editions were due to be eight-page newspapers (Frank Alexander once called it nothing but a flyer), it didn’t register as a blow to journalism or even register with our readers. We slept in Monday and Tuesday mornings and showed up with Wednesday’s edition. The world kept spin-ning.

That was the first and last time we decreased our number of issues. Since then, we’ve increased our publication schedule every time NYRA lengthened the meet. The August place to be has turned into the mid-July/August/early September place to be and The Special has grown with it.

We like to think producing one less paper this week is a sign of strength. Not weakness. When you spend your life as the underdog, the little paper that could, sometimes it’s hard to take a step back and make a good editorial decision, a prudent economic decision.

One less press run and one less deadline should improve quality, it will certainly improve sanity.

The Thursday edition of The Special – the ninth of 12 in a row, published on moving day between the Select Sale and Preferred Sale and covering a card topped by the Statue of Liberty Stakes – was a struggle. It wasn’t our best work.

Today, we’ve previewed the Statue of Liberty Stakes and we’ll recap the Birdstone, the Statue of Liberty, Wednesday’s and Thursday’s cards in Fri-day’s edition. Sound good?

So, if you’re looking for us Wednesday night, we’ll be on a boat on the lake instead of a desk in the office. Anybody know how to get to the lake?
