so christmas has come and gone again, and we are recovering from new year’s Eve, or in my case

looking up the bands who were on Jools Holland this year. We’re turning to New Year’s Resolutions about getting fit, eating better, taking up those hobbies, and spending less on Christmas next year.

There is more ahead for Bristol too. For one, we’re no longer Green Capital of Europe - so now we’ll dispense with all the plasticy giant whale art and glowing spiders and will go back to not being very green really and a nightmare to drive around. There is more though, the Bristol Arena is still going ahead and it’s going to be a logistics nightmare; especially when you consider access and parking.

Then there’s elections. More elections. Bristol is having its own special election in May with all council seats up for grabs as well as the elected mayorship too. It looks like a toss up between sticking with a much maligned independent Mayor Ferguson and Marvin Reeves of Labour. Talk about between a rock and a hard place. In Briz we’ll have 4 councillors up for grabs, will they all stay with Labour or will local boys Perry Hicks and Tony Carey shake things up a bit?

with the assistance of Birchwood Medical Practice, we are introducing a regular section with hints and tips to help you with your health and wellbeing - we hope you find this helpful. this month we are focusing on the flu season.

Flu is a common infectious viral illness spread by coughs and sneezes, and it can be very unpleasant. You can help stop yourself catching flu or spreading it to others with good hygiene measures including:

• washing hands regularly with soap and warm water

• cleaning surfaces such as your telephone and door handles to get rid of germs

• using tissues to cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze

• putting used tissues in a bin as soon as possible.

Most people will make a full recovery and won’t experience any further problems, but elderly people and people with certain long-term medical conditions are more likely to have a bad case of flu or develop a serious complication, such as a chest infection.

In some people at risk of more serious flu, an annual flu vaccine may be recommended to help reduce the risk of becoming infected.

Free NHS Flu vaccination is available for:

• anyone aged over 65

• pregnant women

• anyone who is very overweight (BMi 40+)

• children/adults with an underlying health condition (particularly long-term heart or lung disease)

• children/adults with weakened immune systems.

A flu vaccine nasal spray is also now offered to healthy children aged 2-4yrs and those in school years one and two.

You should have the flu vaccination every year to stay protected as the viruses that cause flu change every year.

are you eligible? Please contact your GP surgery to find out or book in your flu vaccination as soon as possible.

the Brislington car parkSadly not an actual car park or one to bring more shoppers into the centre, but the state of our main road and connecting roads. Recently there’s been a spate of accidents along the Bath Road which has combined with near non-stop roadworks somewhere along the chain or light failures to make the roads especially busy. Is it me or is Brislington turning into a car park?

It’s also got harder to cross West Town Lane to get to Tesco without taking a detour to one of the sets of lights - well, with the nights drawing in there’s not much point as it’s an even longer journey to find a lit route into Tesco via Water Lane, but that’s another story...

Ok, moan over now. Except to just say that this could be nothing if the Arena plans are not sorted out. Brislington could be one of two main ways traffic is going to funnel into the Arena area - where there is no parking either - and out of it. Makes you wonder how that’s going to work given how badly the route is functioning now.

Bristol’s Big Bike appealLife Cycle UK and APE Project are calling for the public to donate their old, unwanted bicycles on Saturday, 9th January 2016, between 11 – 2pm at one of three drop off points across the city:

CREATE Centre, Smeaton Road, BS1 6XN

Bristol Prison, Cambridge Road, Horfield, BS7 8PS

Ape Project, Neetham Road, St George, BS5 9PF

Life Cycle and APE decided to team-up and organise the event because they are both desperately in need of larger children’s bikes, suitable for children aged 8 years and upwards, that can be fixed and reused. Both organisations run schemes to refurbish old bikes, which are then passed onto children and young people from low income families via bike swaps at a range of community centres and schools across the city.

For more information, please contact: Poppy Brett, CEO, Life Cycle UK Tel: 0117 353 4580 / mob: 07905 760 577 Email: [email protected] or Rachel or Guy, APE Project: Email: [email protected]

Know the symptoms of scarlet FeverThe Abacus Day Nursery in Brislington has sent out a message to all parents to be on the look out for the symptoms of Scarlet Fever after a child was diagnosed with it.

Scarlet Fever is a highly contagious infection which most seriously affects children under the age of 10. It’s most noticeable symptom is a red rash on the arm, but flushed cheeks, sore throat and swollen tongue also indicate the infection.

It is easy to treat if caught early, so check out the NHS’ Scarlet Fever page and consult a doctor.

slimming World: A success story“do you know” i said to my partner andrea, “i’m starting to get out of breath just walking along flat pavements now!” to which she replied “so am i, now you come to mention it.”

Yes, just the act of walking a relatively short distant from the car to our places of work was the physical equivalent of a three-mile run to many people. As our favourite pursuit is enjoying country walks and doing a bit of birdwatching, you can see that the word ‘enjoying’ was totally misplaced at that time. Although Bill Oddie is hugely more annoying but less overweight than I was, you rarely see him on these TV shows frightening off the bird he’s trying to see by wheezing too loudly. This sadly, was an all too common occurrence in our case.

Deciding that enough was enough we then went into things in a little more detail with each other and at one point, we even gave ourselves a notional life expectancy if we were to carry on as we were. This may seem really morbid I know, but it did the trick. We had been together as a couple for a few months shy of twenty years at that point, so we must be pretty much ideal for each other. We both agreed that we’d like to extend our double-act for as long as possible into the future. It was this very unsettling, yet constructive conversation in August 2011, which was the catalyst for the transformation to follow over the next couple of years.

As if by luck, fate, providence, call it what you will, or an intervention by St Jude, the patron saint of hopeless causes and impossible situations, on the August Bank Holiday, a Slimming World leaflet was delivered. Having tried to follow Slimming World once before by going it alone without support, we actually started to see promising results only for a pre-planned holiday to ruin it. Remembering our mini success however, we decided to give it a second go.

Like a lot of people I was very apprehensive about my first Slimming World meeting. Thoughts went through my mind like - Would I be the only man there? Would I be twice the size

of everyone else? Would I be made to introduce myself and give my life history in front of strangers?

Fortunately these fears were unfounded. The New Member talk, where I gave my background to the consultant, only featured Emma and her social team. I started my journey at 21 stones 4 pounds, and Andrea at just under 16 stones. As it was, there was another guy at the group when I started. The group was also relatively small to begin with as it had only just been handed over to Emma.

The key to our success over the months that followed our first night nerves was primarily our wish to succeed and prolong our lives together. The support we’ve received given each other at home as a couple has also been a godsend. If you could bottle the enthusiasm and obvious passion for what Emma Woods, we’d all be stocking up on that. She has been there in all states of health in order not to let anyone down. When you have somebody like that at the head of the group you really don’t want to let them down.

It has been a long journey, but the milestones and feel-good moments have made it not only rewarding but enjoyable and even laugh-out-loud funny on occasions. In the early days I’d get strange looks in Sainsbury’s by trying to lift as many bags of sugar that equated to the amount I’d lost at that point. Andrea would have disowned me if she’d seen that!

So that’s it now, job done, at target. Well, at target maybe, but job done? Definitely not! I may now be down to 13 stone 4 pounds after achieving my 8 stone weight-loss target, and Andrea lost her 6 stones to drop from size 22 to size 8, but would it be fair just to disappear now? Certainly not! We will use our lifetime membership (you attend for free on attaining your target weight and stay within 3 pounds of it).

So what are we going to do with our rediscovered fitness? We would just love to carry on with our country walks without having limit the distance or difficulty of them.

sat on the sofa in January, surrounded by decorations that need taking down; trying to put off the cleaning that will

need doing to get all those bloomin’ pine needles up (how do they do it? i still find them in March!!); watching the children playing (not so) harmoniously with the new toys they received from christmas, and hugging the extra tyre around my middle that is almost certainly more to do with mulled wine and Baileys than duck fat roasted potatoes; it can feel a bit anti-climactic.

Every year I think on New Years Eve about the excitement a new year holds. Starting fresh, new challenges, changing old encrusted habits with new healthy mind, body and soul ones. Every year, I vow that I will not have another summer to fat to wear a swimming costume, or that I will begin a new hobby. I wont watch so much TV; I’ll play more with the children or my favourite one “I will be the best version of myself I can possibly be” (What does that even mean??!!) And every year, in January, I look around and feel disappointed already!

Not this year!! This year will be different!

Do you make a new years resolution? Do you end up mostly disappointed? Or maybe you are one of those people who is able to make one and achieve it?

In my quest to not make a repeat of the last, let me think, 10 years! I have decided to do a lot of research before making my resolution in a bid for this year to be the one year I stick to it!

Why do we make New Years Resolutions? The origins can be traced back all the way to the Babylonians in Biblical times. They made vows to their gods to return borrowed objects and pay off their debts to begin the new year afresh. The Romans made promises to the god of January, Janus. In Medieval days, the knights re-affirmed their vow of chivalry. Many religions have a tradition of praying and vowing to God for the year ahead.

But nowadays the resolutions are less to do with religion and more to do with health and wellbeing. I will loose weight, I will quit smoking; I won’t drink so much. I’ll manage my finances better. Are these not things we should do anyway? Why wait until New Year? Are we such procrastinators that actually the New Year is an excuse to do what we want until January – forever putting off our good intentions? November - I can’t diet now, Its nearly Christmas. December – Ah, no dieting this month it’s the month of Christmas. January – Ok, New Year, New diet! February – ah… fell off the wagon… no use starting now, its nearly Easter, I’ll wait until next January…

According to Wikipedia 35% of new years resolutions fail because people make unrealistic goals, 33% forgot to track their progress and 23% just plain forgot!

So... to be completely successful my new years resolution needs to be realistic, easy to track and unforgettable! Thinking caps on! Have you made your Resolution yet?

Wait for it… Here it comes… the big reveal… My New Years Resolution for 2016 is to remember I don’t need to be perfect. I will wear a swimming costume in the summer whether I’m fat or not, because my kids love swimming and they matter to me more that what others think. My house wont’ always be clean because we live in it, we love in it and we laugh in it; and more often than not, that produces a lot of mess! I won’t always be on time, because sometimes listening to my son tell another animated story is more important than leaving the house on time; and I’m pretty sure I won’t be exercising, because I only run if I’m being chased and I don’t plan on getting chased much!

I will remember that I am doing my best. And sometimes your best is just about enough!

Happy New Year Peeps! Oh, and be the best version of yourself you can be!! (Whatever the heck that means!!)

Here we are again. it’s another new year and once again that internal fire is burning - it’s “your year” to make

everything right. this year you’re not just going to set out to try, you are going to make it happen!

Even for me, having a business in the sport and fitness industry, the thought of “getting in shape this year” is getting a little boring. However, as I quickly realised this fault, I found the answer.

Having a business (and a gym) it is imperative that I keep things interesting, and I have found that people’s opinions of gyms have been declining, so who’s fault is that?

The one thing my members dislike about mainstream gyms, is that they have gone out to compete solely on price, I love a bargain whatever I am spending money on, but cheap is something to stay away from as there is always that hidden fault that pops up when you least expect it, and with gyms, that fault seems to lay in “see our terms and conditions, you have a contract”!!!!

I would challenge any gym to remove these contracts and solely focus on customer satisfaction, and what a challenge that would be? imagine that? your gym is based on their input into you and that brought about a new interest into my own gym and members, and straight away that answer I said I found came to a massive realisation, “your gym” . . . my gym is no longer my gym, it’s my members gym, it’s their gym and spending more time with my members has been the most productive and interesting experience in knowing their needs, they will need me at times and I should know when they need me.

Does your gym do that?

If you are going to turn your best intentions into your best results, make sure whatever and whoever is plugged in with your best intentions, choosing a gym can be the best experience you will ever have, if they make the effort for you.

Don’t forget to join in The Armoury ImPossible challenge, it’s a 12 week body transformation competition that is now open for everybody, not just the members of The Armoury.

this yule, oasis academy Brislington sixth-formers wowed st. nick’s Market in Bristol with their hedgehogs

and christmas trees made from recycled books. the prickly pals, which came with name tags, were part of a range of items made by the academy’s young Enterprise team, which goes by the name of oasis Productions.

The Post 16 students came together in September to take part in the programme, which is backed by the Rotary club and allows young people to develop business skills such as customer service, negotiation, teamwork and merchandising.

With the support of business advisers, the students had to decide on their individual roles, register their business, decide what they would produce and raise the money to do it.

They washed cars – and academy minibuses – to raise funds for materials. They worked together to produce the book art, as well as stockings for cats and dogs, sweet bags (for humans!) and chalk boards.

Paige Parker and Tom Harris were chosen as the leaders of the group. Paige said she had learned a lot already during the process and was grateful to be able to seek advice from professionals.

“I have a very short temper,” she admitted. “If nothing goes to plan, I am not a happy person. But I have calmed myself down a lot and I am able to manage things properly.”

Link teacher Dr Ina Goldberg said the students were a diverse group, including teenagers from Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Argentina and Pakistan, who were working well together.

The students are now working towards their second trade fair in the spring, when they will expand their gift range with Mother’s Day in mind, to include photo frames and candles.

Oasis Brislington is one of 27 schools in the greater Bristol area taking part in Young Enterprise’s Company Programme this year. Winners of competition heats go through to an area final followed by regional and national finals.

Area organiser Caroline Tarbuck said “It is a great way for young people to develop themselves. Young Enterprise wants all young people to leave school having developed the skills, attitude and experience employers are asking for – communication, teamworking, creativity, problem solving and resilience.”

we take it for granted that our boilers, cookers and gas fires are safe. it is only when there is a problem with

an appliance that many people take any notice of it at all.

What are the gas safety risks of dangerous gas work?

Badly fitted and poorly serviced appliances can cause the following, potentially deadly, safety risks:

1. gas leaks

2. fires

3. explosions

4. carbon monoxide poisoning

top tIpS For GAS SAFEtYWhether you are installing a new gas appliance, having maintenance done or fixing an existing problem, please follow our top gas safety tips:

christmas and the winter season has always been the traditional time for the telling of ghost stories. For

hundreds of years people have gathered around open fires in the festive period to hear tales of the strange and supernatural. Many still remember the famous “a Ghost story for christmas”, BBc tv series, broadcast at christmas from 1971–78, a tradition revived from 2005-2013. Most of these stories were adaptations from the works of a master of the genre, M.R. James (1862 -1936), author and medieval scholar, who wrote many tales which were originally read aloud on christmas Eve to friends at King’s college, cambridge where he was Provost.

Every area, town and village has it’s own traditional stories of hauntings and ghostly goings on and the former Somerset village of Brislington is no exception:

the Elms, a fine Georgian house which stood off Bonville Road, and which was destroyed by fire in 1938, was said to have been haunted by a coach and four horses which drove up to the front door. The old Bath Road once went past the house, the drive to which being once part of this old road. Woodcroft, another 18th century house which still stands in Wick Road is reputed to be visited by the ghost of a child.

A phantom horseman is said to ride up to the front door of the woodlands, which dates from around 1750 and still stands in West Town Lane.

The 17th century Keeper’s cottage on Brislington Hill is believed to be haunted by a ghost once described as “a person in light”, seen several times on the upstairs landing.

Just across the road where the Toys R Us store now stands near the junction of Bath Road and West Town Lane , once stood Brislington Hall, home of the former main landowners of Brislington, the Clayfield–Irelands. A former parlour maid to the last of the family “Squire’ Alfred Clayfield–Ireland (1851-1923), in about 1920, once heard a clock strike six in an empty ball room where there was no clock, and also saw a man in evening dress disappear before her eyes.

The Gough family lived at Hick’s Gate House, Bath Road, on the Brislington – Keynsham border from 1914-57. In the early 1920s some of the family dogs unearthed a human skull in the garden. That night footsteps were heard on passageways of the house and door handles were heard to turn. The following morning it transpired that all the family members had heard this but each thought it was another member of the household moving about, but no one in fact had actually left their bedroom. The skull was then given to the vicar of Keynsham for a burial in consecrated ground and peace returned to the house. In 1977 the house was being

renovated for the current owners who experienced similar nocturnal happenings. They also felt they were being watched, by someone who had lived in the house and loved it, but this was not a bad feeling .

the Beeches built in 1834 in the grounds of Brislington House Asylum, (now Long Fox Manor) and now an hotel and conference centre is reported to have been haunted by the ghost of a young man, employed at the house who died after his scullery maid sister had also died young. There are also numerous reported sightings of a “grey nun’, known as “Sister Theresa” at Arno’s Manor Hotel (formerly Arno’s Court) which was a Roman Catholic convent from 1850–1948. These , and other unexplained phenomena are included in the excellent “Brislington Ghosts and Mysteries” by Ken Taylor (Redcliffe Press, 2005) .

The Proper Job DIY store on Warrington Road stands on the site of the former Ritz cinema, built in 1938, part of which can still be seen in the car park at the rear of the store. The Ritz was much loved but sadly had a short working life of only thirty years. Partially demolished in 1970, it later became a Kwik Save supermarket.

Several former employees over many years have reported experiencing a “cold feeling” and “ a ghostly presence” in a particular part of the store. During research into the history of The Ritz in 2007 a former projectionist said he was told that a cinema patron had died suddenly on the premises sometime in the 1950s. Could this have been the cause of the supernatural happenings?

STORIES

whats on...

i would like to wish all Brislington residents a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous 2016. In 2015, Brislington led on the

campaign to keep our Wick Road library open, plus the other 6 suburban libraries proposed for closure. It’s fair to say that we gave Mayor Ferguson and Assitant Mayor Radice of the Green Party a tough time and forced them to reconsider. don’t upset Brislington!

In 2016, there is another campaign that we need to win. Many Briz residents, especially those living in the Hungerford Rd, West Town Lane and Callington Rd areas have complained about the re-routing of the No.36 bus, so that it does not stop at the hospital/Tescos. The nearest bus route for everyone needing the Callington Rd Hospital is now on the Wells Rd. They have to walk down a long, poorly- lit, and isolated path.

Callington Rd hospital is the only one in the city not served by a regular bus route (NB yes, ABus occasionally – not adequate for a hospital open 24/7). So at the Bristol City Council Meeting on 12th November I put these questions to Mayor Ferguson and these were his answers;

1. Since the No.36 bus was re-routed by First, it has been extremely difficult for relatives and friends to visit patients at Callington Rd Hospital, many of whom are Older People with dementia or people with mental health problems. What action has the Mayor taken to prioritise the provision of a public bus service to Callington Rd Hospital in Brislington?

Mayor Ferguson: A fully deregulated bus industry means that the Council is restricted in what it can do in relation to provision of bus services. The council has a limited bus subsidy budget which is used to support services deemed socially necessary, taking consideration of the commercial bus market. This budget is fully committed at present and we are therefore unable to financially support a bus service to Callington Rd Hospital. Representations have been made to First to review their routing of No.36, but they are committed to the current route in the interests of wider punctuality and reliability of the service.

2. What assessment has Bristol City Council undertaken to monitor the impact recent changes to the No 36 bus route have had upon residents in Brislington?

Mayor Ferguson: Changes to the commercial bus network happen on a regular basis and the Council considers the impact as they occur. We are aware of the loss of some of the direct connections previously provided by the No.36, but as a commercial service, we are not in a position to determine its route. (So we’ll take that as a “No”).

So, if we start a campaign in 2016 for Bristol City Council to subsidise a bus route to Callington Rd Hospital and Tescos, would you support it? I am setting up an e-petition in January and will be circulating paper copies to collect signatures, so if we knock on your door, please sign.
