TWENTY-NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME OCTOBER 21, 2018

Pastor’s Corner

One of the consequences of original sin is the notion of competition with others for positions of power. The ideal relationship between people is modeled by Adam and Eve before sin. They did not compete with each other; they complemented each other with their unique masculine and feminine characteristics and shared everything in common. But sin causes humans to distrust and so competition enters the picture. The gospel this Sunday shows us this competitiveness in the disciples. They want the best positions in the Kingdom, thinking it means power, because that’s what they learned from worldly leaders. But Jesus explains to them that it means just the opposite, powerlessness. They must be willing to give up all pretense of power and instead learn to serve each other with no expectation of getting something in return. Jesus promises them that if they can let go of everything they put their trust in temporarily, they will receive a trust from God that is permanent and receive everything else they need in addition. Let us pray that we be worthy servants of the Lord and our neighbor. Amen!

This Year’s Advent Book: Three Days

In the Bible we are told Jesus was lost in the Temple for three days when he traveled to Jerusalem at Passover with Mary and Joseph. Why did he stay behind? What did he do? Who did he meet? Where did he sleep? Was he ever in danger? This Biblical novel is a compelling tale about 12-year-old Jesus, based on the

second chapter of Luke's Gospel. This book will grip your imagination as you explore the Temple and experience the drama of ancient Hebrew traditions with the boy Messiah. It's a story for the child in all of us. To sign up for a group go to our website: sfassisi.org/book-club or sign up in the nar-thex. Pick up your books on November 18, after Mass and the first class will begin on November 25.

Original Olive Wood Handicrafts from Bethlehem November 10th & 11th after all Masses

Nativity Sets – Creches – Rosaries – Statuettes – Christmas Ornaments – Home, Office and Church Décor

From Bethlehem in the Holy Land, The Bannoura family of Bethlehem Handi-crafts imports products from the Christian community of Bethlehem. They are pleased to share their family story and trade to all those who will be present after all masses. As Joseph taught Christ the trade of carpentry in Nazareth, the Bannoura family passed the trade of olive wood artisanship from generation to generation

until the present. They take great pride in this distinct and traditional craft, which is one of the principal sources of income for the small but resilient Christian community. Each item for sale is handcrafted from olive wood with care and precision. Any number of items ranging from Nativity sets to Christmas ornaments will make ideal Christmas gifts for family, friends and coworkers. Other items such as statuettes and rosary beads will make for ex-cellent Baptismal, First Communion and Confirmation gifts throughout the year. Visit www.bethlehemhandicrafts.com for more information and to view available products.

CHURCH ATTIRE REMINDER: Did you know that you are a temple of the Holy Spirit? You’ll never regret dressing appropriately with modesty & humility. Be brave, be a leader – please dress reverently when you come to spend time with our Lord, Jesus Christ! Thank you! Do your jeans have glitter on the back pockets? This scratches the wooden pews. Please save such jeans for another time.

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd: started recently. The program has had tremendous support from our parish and I wanted to make sure to thank 2 very special businesses for their help: Longmont Florist is providing flowers each week so that the children can put arrangements on our prayer table. This is the most important area of our atrium (classroom) and where the children begin

and end each session. The children love creating something beautiful to display and take great pride in their work; St. John’s Food Bank is providing a walking breakfast for our CGS children on Sundays so that they can quickly fill their bellies and attend 10am mass with their families. Thank you so much Longmont Florist and St. John’s Food Bank!!! If you are interested in helping our program, contact Julia at 310-409-5701 or [email protected].

Agape Safe Haven As we prepare for the winter season the staff and volunteers at

Agape Safe Haven have been reflecting upon the fact that "We Are All God's Children". Each one of us, no matter our life's circumstances, is a child of God and beloved by Him. Won't you help Agape Safe Haven bring dignity and hope to the homeless guests we serve?

We are a Christian Organization that works with our Homeless Guests. Our goal has always been to be a 'HANDS UP’ ministry. Our goal is to be GOD’S good stewards. Isn’t that what He calls us to do?

This is our 3rd Season and we have had wonderful results…

We are in immediate need of donations like plain t shirts, men’s and women’s undergarments, socks, and thermal underwear. In addition, we would appreciate donations of coffee and household cleaning supplies. Please place these items in the appropriate box in the Narthex. Do you have an extra hour or two during the week? We are in such need of Volunteers. Agape Safe Haven does not receive State or City funding. Contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Michele McCracken, at 303-564-0696. Also, please go to our website-agapesafehaven.org

Hello Everyone! Isn't it exciting to see the construction of our church. Every time we come to church we look to see what has happened since our last visit. We are so blessed that the roof was up before the snow last week-end. Thanks be to God and all the construction crew who are working so hard and thank you for keeping the job site so clean. We appreciate all of you! Please continue to pray for the safety of everyone working on the church and all of our brothers and sisters in Christ. Love and Prayers, Stewardship Council

ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH LONGMONT

Youth Leadership Team Opportunities GREAT NEWS TO REPORT! The number of boys in the EDGE Middle School program has grown! Another man is needed to mentor these young men at our gathering each week. Are you or someone you know available to lead these young men? You must be between the ages of 17-77 and a Catholic in good standing. Please contact Sandy Gross at [email protected].

Two female mentors are needed in order to start a new high school girls’ YDisciple group. If you’ve been wondering how you can share your gifts with the Church, especially with high school young ladies, please contact Sandy Gross at [email protected]. As always, training and support are provided! The best way to learn your faith is to pass it on to others!

Thank you to Tim Medearis, Ethan Brandt, Jonah Martinez, Rachel Riley, Terri Monahan-Mitchell, Karen Simmons, Maddie Brandt and Hoa Nguyen for hearing the call to ministry! If you or someone you know is interested in being part of a YDisciple group, please let me know. I can put girls on a waiting list at this time. I can accept 3 more guys at this time.

YDisciple is a mentor-intensive discipleship group where youth meet once a week with their friends and two mentors to discuss their faith and get to know one another on a deeper level. Each group determines its own meeting time and place. YDisciple groups use the YDisciple program on FORMED and the SUMMIT Scripture study program. Every 6 weeks YDisciple groups gather for service projects, mini-retreats, or fun outings. Space for YDisciple is very limited, so register soon. Parent involvement is a must. Parents provide snacks and places to meet in their homes. Parents also help us locate new mentors for new groups. YDisciple will continue to add new groups throughout the year as new mentors are trained. All registration forms are online and in the lobby. We now have a waiting list for girls and 3 spots available for boys. Registration is $25. Contact [email protected] to sign up youth and recommend

mentors.

The EDGE Middle School Youth Group is open to grades 6 – 8. We meet on Wednesday nights from 6-7:30. EDGE is filled with fun activities, games, praise and worship experiences, small group discussions, teaching elements, and a special opportunity to "Put on the Armor of Christ". The Armor program has different challenges for the youth to accomplish on their own in order to earn medals.

At EDGE, St. Francis youth will make friendships with each other and with Jesus Christ. Our goal is to encourage youth to develop a daily prayer time, Scripture study, and an appreciation for the Sacraments so they will remain disciples of Christ throughout their lifetime. Retreats will be offered in the Spring.

To join Edge, please fill out a registration form and return it to the parish office. Forms are online and in the church narthex. Registration is $25.

There will be NO EDGE on Oct. 31 or Nov 21. Nov. 28 is our last meeting in 2018.

Sacraments grades 6-12 Why: The teen Sacrament program is here to help you became a Saint and know and love the Lord for a lifetime and beyond. What else is there?! Who: All Catholics in grades 6 -12 who need the Sacraments of 1st Communion and/or Confirmation. What you need to do: Sacramental Prep classes at St. Francis are two-year programs. Therefore, youth who desire First Communion as well as Confirmation need to participate in two years of youth group and one year of monthly Sacrament classes.
