THE RABBi’S CORNER

Rabbi Arturo Kalfus

Arlene Keller, our current Interim Educa-tor, has done a wonderful job for us this year. Arlene took the reins of the school at a time of significant change. As you know, we are completing the first year of our combined Religious School (kindergarten through grade 7) with Congregation Beth

Shalom. Both congregations worked hard to make this year and the transition run smoothly. Arlene, as head of our Yachad com-bined school, put everything in place to maintain and improve our school this year, as well as coordinating and teaching in Temple’s Young Adult/High School program.

For that and so much more, we want to thank Arlene for her love for Jewish education and for the fact that she agreed to come back from a deserved planned retirement to help us out this year.

With Arlene in place, our search committee had the time it needed to do a timely national search. We received many re-sumes, we did many skype interviews and we invited selected candidates to visit with us in person. The committee had high standards. We wanted to find a candidate with everything that was required for the job and more. At the end of this process, we are extremely happy to announce that we have selected a great Educator in Abi Taylor-Abt. She received the unanimous support of the search committee and the Boards of both congre-gations.

Abi has the experience, knowledge and maturity for this posi-tion. But more than that, Abi engaged with the search commit-tee in ways that made it clear she was the best candidate among all who applied for the position. We are very happy that such a qualified candidate found our congregation to be the best match for her. Arlene Keller has offered to help Abi in this transition and we plan to have everything in place to start the new school year running from day one.

You will find more details about Abi in this bulletin (page 5) and in our upcoming congregational communications. We want to thank all the members of our search committee (Dennis Kayes, Bruce Klein, Jan Danzig, Kelly Onickel, Rabbi Gamer, Rachel Frank, Renee Zacks, Ruth Hurwitz and Teresa Becker-man) and in particular our committee chair, Wendy Bakst. Our congregation owes each one of our search committee members a debt of gratitude. Todah Rabbah! Much thanks!

I want to share with you a piece of a recent article Abi wrote regarding Passover published in “The Times of Israel”.

“The reason behind having freedom is that life without a pur-pose is in itself a form of slavery. When freedom is referred to in the Torah, it is linked to a purpose.

Before our journey out of Egypt, our redemption from slavery to the Egyptians, God clearly says, “Let my people go – and they will serve me”. With 613 mitzvot, Jewish laws and tradi-tions, the Torah gives us an educational blueprint for living. Our values and history, the ethics of our fathers, all combine to guide us in living a life where we can choose to make a difference.

We find ourselves in an unusual situation in modern history. Now more than ever we are surrounded by values that lead us back into slavery. The trials of living in a modern world, where we are bombarded by advertising, confusing choices, and a rat race of competition are at odds with the education we try to give our children. When did freedom become an exercise in keeping up with the expectations of others?

Pesach is a festival where we take the commandment of teaching our children and have to apply it at our Seder Night. In fact, the primary function of the traditional Seder Night is to teach our children.

According to the former UK Chief Rabbi, Lord Jonathan Sacks – “The message of Passover remains as powerful as ever. Freedom is won not on the battlefield but in the classroom and the home. Teach your children the history of freedom if you want them never to lose it.”

…History throughout the ages teaches of the difficulty we have as human beings to move on from a culture of slavery to others. But slavery still exists: Slavery to modern day ideals and idols, money, fame and possessions.

Real freedom is the understanding that we have the ability to choose how we live our lives, how we can help others, and how with this education we can truly impact the world”.

Abi is delighted to be joining us as Religious School Direc-tor of the Yachad Religious School program. She will also help coordinate family education, direct Temple’s Young Adult/High School program and participate in congregational learning. Abi and her husband Gideon are excited to come to Michigan with their two youngest children Yael and Ben. I am excited about Abi joining us during this summer. She will be communicating with families before she arrives in Michigan.

If you have any comments and suggestions to offer about the direction of our school programs and family education, please let me know at any moment. I am confident that education here at Temple Emanu-El will be in great hands.

From my heart to yours,

Thanking our current interim Educator and welcoming our New Permanent Educator and Director of Religious School

Fri., May 20, 7pMwith shir Chadash Choir & sam harris Band

WOW how time flies! I can’t believe it is already May! April was a great month. We are finishing up our last month of Religious School culminating in an end of the year concert on May 1st featuring the Sam Harris Band and our Shiru Dor L’dor Youth Choir. We celebrated the Passover holiday with wonderful and spiritual services and our congregational second day of Passover Seder. On a personal note, I graduated with my Master’s Degree in Judaic Studies from the University of Michigan Frankel Institute for Judaic Studies in April!

Now we look ahead to spring and a sense of renewal. On May 20th is our second Music Shabbat of 2016 featuring the music of Cantor Composer Debbie Friedman and will feature the Sam Harris Band and our Shir Chadash Choir. I hope you will all join us!

Looking even further ahead, on June 10th we will have the last of our music Shabbatot this year -- our Beatles Shabbat and Board Installation, once again featuring the Sam Harris Band and Temple Emanu-El’s T’filots:

Dan Medow, Vickie Edwards, Steve Permut and Sue Edelman. Mark your calendars -- you won’t want to miss it!

Please consider joining our Shir Chadash Adult Choir or our Shiru Dor L’dor Youth Choir. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at 248-967-4020 x216.

Temple Emanu-ElAs the school year closes, so does my year as interim education director.

What a wonderful year it has been! How fortunate I have been to be part of the first year of Yachad, the joint school venture between Temple Emanu-El and Congregation Beth Shalom. The school year went quite smoothly and next year should be even better.I was given an opportunity to work with, teach, and learn with our high school students who have a true passion for Judaism and a desire to make our Jewish community thrive on every level. I was supported by the lay leadership of the boards and committees of both Temple Emanu-El and Congregation Beth Shalom; the Temple office staff, who has helped me out with their technological

support as well as finding answers to my crazy inquires; all the teachers, who are so committed to give our students an exciting way to learn; Marla Schloss, education office assistant; and parents who have been so helpful and welcoming. And of course Rabbi Kalfus, who encouraged me to take on this position and has been so very supportive every step of the way. Kelly Onickel - I couldn’t have managed without you being there telling me whatever help I need; just ask, and you came through every time I asked. Fred Frank, you helped me figure out to work within the systems of Temple Emanu-El which was not always what I was used to.To everyone, thank you for your support, kindness and for all the new friend-ships I’ve made.Arlene Keller

Abi Taylor-Abt has been a Jewish educator her whole career. She was born in London in the UK and finished school in Israel. After going to college in South Africa, Abi began in her field of Jewish education in Israel work-ing as the teen director at Moshav Neve Ilan. In England, Abi started as a Judaic Studies and Modern Hebrew Teacher, moving on to become the Principal of the Religious School of Stanmore and Canons Park Synagogue in London. With managerial responsibilities for programming and curriculum, she con-tinued to work within the Jewish School System in the UK while serving on the Board of Management of her local Temple. In 2008, Abi moved to Boise, Idaho to take up the role of Kehillah Programs Director before returning after a few years to Israel to spend time with her older children while they served in the IDF. Her passion for Jewish educa-tion is shown in her belief that Jewish learning is for everybody. Using music and creativity, Abi thrives on running educational programs that bring Judaism into everyone’s daily lives.

MAzEL TOV! B’NAi MiTzVAH

The school year is winding down. The growth and development of the children have led to friendships amongst children and parents alike. Sometimes play times are not all about play. We are reminded that it is important to teach our children how to handle situations when other kids are mean to them. To paraphrase an article from a local newspaper:

Dear Amy: My husband and I have a 6-year-old son. At my husband’s family functions his sister’s 6-year-old boy (and 3-year-old girl) are always pushing or physi-

cally hurting my son. My sister-in-law and her husband believe in “hands-off” parenting and have no boundaries for their kids. I’ve communicated my concerns about their out-of-control kids, but the parents ignore me. What can I do?

Amy’s Response: It is a simple fact that when children interact, accidents do happen and sometimes children get hurt and cry. Sometimes kids who are siblings play rougher than only children are used to. And yes, some-times children are aggressive bullies. Your own parenting should include lessons for your son on how to use his words to express himself. You should encourage him to handle episodes when others aren’t being nice to him, because this will happen at school, on the playground or even on play dates at your own home. Don’t avoid family functions, but DO make sure your son realizes he can (and should) avoid playing with children who aren’t nice to him. Your goal should be to help him function in all sorts of challenging situations.

It is our responsibility to empower our children.

Making Temple More accessible and InclusiveOne of Temple’s Visioning Goals is to make the Temple more

accessible. We want to make our front entrance handicap-accessible. This is a significant project with an estimated cost of $7,150. Over $4500 has been raised so far through the gen-erosity of David and Kathy Sloan,

members who contributed to our Candy for the Troops campaign, Bea Sacks Social Action Committee’s matching contribution following that effort, and pledges from Brotherhood and Sisterhood-WRJ.

We want to have this project completed by the upcoming High Holidays. If you would like to contribute to this worthwhile project or have any questions, please con-tact Fred Frank or Abby Goldfaden in the Temple office.

The women of Temple Emanu-El, and some friends, had a wonderful time celebrating the second annual Queen for an Evening event. The ladies were wined and dined (with Middle Eastern food); put together toiletry kits for the homeless; made, and took home, beautiful beaded brace-lets; and were thoroughly pampered. We got henna tattoos, chair massages, and were treated to a makeup session with a spring lipstick look.

Everyone felt like a queen, and can’t wait for the third annual event next year!

A New Name for an Old Fund for Adult EducationElizabeth Zerwekh

In 2003, when my father, Lou Weinstein, was about to turn 90, we were discussing how to celebrate. What kind of a party should we throw him? Did he want gifts?

We did have a party -- but instead of conventional gifts, he got the idea of starting a fund in his and my mother’s names to promote what was and is a major theme of their lives together --continuing education. That fund was to be at Temple Emanu-El, the Temple that they adopted in their later years to be close to our family. It was decided that the Fund would pay for an annual talk about something that they were interested in. It was called a Scholar Fund but it didn’t need to be “scholarly.”

The first year‘s talk was about the Dead Sea Scrolls and James Vander Kam, Profes-sor of Hebrew Scriptures at the University of Notre Dame and one of the authorities on the subject who prepared the scrolls for publication. For that year’s event and for each and every other one until his death in 2006, my father would get on the phone and start calling all of his friends and relatives and would be a one-man publicist for the events. Naturally, people came! (Of course we served refreshments as well …)

We have had a number of Weinstein Scholars since then, not every year, but pretty close to it. The topics have ranged from Jewish Humor to The Last Lecture with Jeff Zaslow (z”l) to Jan Longone speaking about Jewish Cookery and Cook Books in America. They each have been well-attended, and special -- mom started making the phone calls after Lou died. Now, we are expanding the role of the Fund and renaming it the Beatrice and Louis Weinstein Adult Education Fund. The scope will be ex-panded to be supporting all of the Adult Education Committee Events and Speakers.

Please think of it when you are making donations and tributes to help support and further the ideas and the values we all share -- that of lifelong learning --at our Temple.
