From the Editor

Hi Everyone,

I have had a bit of fun going through some of the old magazines from as far back as 2008 (the 2008 September issue being the oldest digital magazine that I have available). I'll be sprinkling the old trip reports alongside the more recent ones to add a bit of extra content to the magazine. That being said, if you have any trip reports please send them in! :D

Thanks and Regards,Alec SathiyamoorthyNissan 4x4 Club of Victoria Editor

The Club wish to sincerely thank the NOBLE PARK FOOTBALL CLUB for the use of their club rooms for committee meetings.

MT SKENE SNOW TRIP 8 – 10 AUGUST 2008

Attendees:Club members:

Sam Ayoubee, Team LeaderStephen Barker & Dominic BarkerJim KanlidisNoel Smith

Sam Ayoubee’s friends – Adam, Andrew, Josh, Bradely and Jack.

The trip commenced Friday 8 August 2008. There were a total of 7 vehicles that attended this trip. Four vehicles decided to head off from Melbourne to Mt Skene on the Friday afternoon around 2.30pm to ensure we all secured the hut.

The rst stop off on the journey was at Heyeld for a re-fuel and then from there we headed straight up towards Mt Skene.

Between Licola and Mt Skene we stopped to put up a marker of directions for another 2 vehicles who were heading up later that Friday evening. During this stop we were stopped and questioned by Police as to where we were heading. We explained that we were heading up to Crows Hut and we were warned by police to be careful as they were heading up that way themselves to rescue a couple of people that had managed to get their vehicle stuck on the road.

We nally arrived at the hut at approximately 7pm and were thankful to arrive safe and sound and to also nd the hut unoccupied! We were fortunate that some people had left some cut timber behind at the hut so we managed to get a re going and roll out our swags inside the hut. After unpacking we went for a lookout for the second group who managed to arrive around 10.30pm. They told us that they too got stopped by the same police who had since rescued the two people minus their vehicle.

We returned to the hut and sat around the re to a few drinks and called it a night around midnight. Snow started falling overnight so a couple of blokes thought it would be fun to play out in the snow around 3.30am.

Saturday morning we woke up to thick white snow which was

roughly 5cm deep. Stephen Barker and his son Dominic were the last group to arrive and we knew they were arriving around 9am so two vehicles went on the lookout for them both.

Now we had our full group of seven vehicles so we decided to head up to Mt Skene. On the way we saw the stranded vehicle which was left behind from the couple rescued by police. The stranded vehicle was a bloody Pajero! It was stuck in the middle of the road covered in snow. We managed to get 3 vehicles around it however unfortunately Stephen Barker’s vehicle got stuck so I turned around to get him out and managed to get stuck myself. Thanks to the aid of whinges we got ourselves out and back on our tracks!

We headed up to the top of Mt Skene which was covered in approximately 2 metres of snow. At the top of Mt Skene which is 1,585 metres in height there was about 150 4x4’s that we drove past who were from various other clubs. We stopped for a while, had a play in the snow, took some pictures and then decided to return to the hut.

Back at the hut we got the chainsaws out the cut up some more timber and got the re going. We ate, had a few drinks and chatted for several hours before calling it a night.

Sunday morning we woke up to further snow which had fallen overnight. There was nothing like waking up and seeing everything white and blanketed in snow. The scenery was absolutely magnicent!

We had brekky and decided to head off in the opposite direction towards Jamieson. The tracks we dug through the day before were all covered in snow overnight. So we had to dig our way through which was enjoyable and driving through the soft snow was fantastic!

As we went past the top of Mt Skene we all got a shock! We were shocked to see a Subaru Imprezza (a sadan model) stuck on the snow. Here was a guy alone who had managed to get stuck the night before. We’re surprised he had made it that far with this kind of vehicle and had told him how crazy

Pretty foolish of him to be doing such a thing! We managed to get him out and the group headed up to the Jamieson pub for a bite to eat and have a game of pool before calling it a day and returning home to Melbourne. Overall the trip was fantastic which I thoroughly enjoyed and hope everyone from the group had as much of a good time as I did!

BlazeAid - Adelong NSWDarren Jones Sharon JonesAmy Jones Alex GloverDavid Anderson

Report by: David Anderson

9th March 2020

The trip was over the Labour Day weekend to assist a BlazeAid farm out of the BlazeAid Centre at Adelong NSW. The trip to the BlazeAid depot is about five and a half hours up the Hume Highway with the farm about half an hour further on at Wondalga near the Blowering Reservoir in the Snowy Mountains. The farm was growing sheep for wool on about 550 acres. It was extensively burnt on 3 January with the main house and woolshed burnt along with the majority of the land and fences. A second house and the toolshed were saved but with no fences the stock had to be sold.

While it was the first trip for me, the other members of the group had been to the property previously – including on Australia Day. There was a great rapport with the farming family, who specifically asked for the Nissan 4WD group to come back to the property. The rapport was built up from the previous visits and continued by the groups working closely together on the fences and a fantastic Sunday lunch on the property (more of that later).

The property had started to turn green with much of the pasture starting to recover and most trees starting to show regeneration. Those who had been there previously said this was in stark contrast

to the total black on black of pasture, litter, trees and buildings on the Australia Day visit.

Whilst there we mainly worked on fencing.

We built about 1600 m of fencing. There were some real experts in the team and they mixed with the members of the farming family. I was the real apprentice but I learnt a lot and the whole team achieved a lot over the week end. I now know enough to say that the fences included the star pickets, the maxi pickets, the tensioners, the Gripples, the wire spinner, the griplock, the barb wire, the barb wire connectors and more. The tension posts were already in place.

Page 11: NISSAN NEWS · Nissan News is the official magazine of The Nissan Four Wheel Drive Club of Victoria Inc. (“the Club”) which is a member of Four Wheel Drive Victoria. Articles,

NISSAN NEWS July 2020 9 www.nissan4x4vic.com.au

Some of the fences were on steep country between the creek and the road and benefitted those members of the team with one leg shorter than the other and certainly kept the team sweating.

The work got the seal of the approval from Barry – who is the 80+ year old owner and patriarch of the property, so we can conclude a worthwhile job was well done.

There were some diversions from fencing. There was a sumptuous Sunday lunch of beef ribs, pulled pork and cheesecake put on by the family and it was a great opportunity to mix informally with the family, swap yarns and experiences, and it certainly confirmed the great affinity between the club members and the family.

We also took a short trip to Batlow (15 mins) which had been surrounded by the fires but where about three quarters of the town had been saved. We visited one of the town’s cideries where the buildings were saved, but alas, the steel tanks of apple cider were well and truly cooked and had to be thrown out (along with the apple vinegar). We had a great chat to the owner and purchased some cider – potent at 9.2% alcohol and in 500ml bottles- with the cider being made in the Hunter Valley from Batlow apples.

The other main diversion was to winch out a two week old Rav 4 from a soft hole that developed at the side of the road by the property.

BlazeAid runs the camp at Adelong, organize the volunteers and make up the daily work rosters out to the farms. They also make everyone welcome and feed everyone with a great country feeling. They give the camp a great feeling and make it really easy to fit in.

There were four to six farms being helped over the Labour Day week end. This is well down on the Australia Day weekend when there were many more volunteers enabling over 15 farms to be assisted. There is no doubt that the need continues well after the immediate response to the fires. BlazeAid registered some 300 farms in the area and still have some 200 to help.

It is a great organization, the need is still there and there is no doubt that you will have a great time when you volunteer. Look out for future BlazeAid trips.

BE ALERT NOT ALARMEDWhile you enjoy the great outdoors in Australia or overseas, be aware that ticks, fleas, bed bugs, mites, lice and other biting insects might transfer many diseases to humans and our furry friends. The paralysis tick is suspected to be the main culprit, but other tick species might also affect us in Australia. When overseas always check the countries travel warnings on ticks and other insect diseases.

Not all ticks bite humans or carry diseases, but it’s better to be careful - your health could be “Gone In A Tick”!

THIS BROCHURE IS FOR YOU!

1. Keep this pamphlet in your first aid kit along with fine tip tweezers (such as special TickEase tweezers www.tickease.com.au.)

2. Wear protective clothing and spray with suitable repellents.3. Warning, some ticks can bite and need to feed all year and in any climate

from the larvae stage. It is the nymph and adult stages that are the most dangerous in Spring and Summer.

4. It can take up to 4 days for a tick to feed, but diseases may transfer sooner.5. Check your pets to prevent bringing ticks inside to bite your family. Seek Vet

advice if your pets display odd symptoms. 6. If you are bitten remain calm. Save the tick for testing** and photograph any

rash or video any symptoms that may occur such as shaking, twitching etc.7. Follow our instructions for removing ticks.8. If experiencing a rash, flu-like symptoms or potential anaphylaxis, seek

immediate medical help. If anaphylactic reaction call Emergency 000.9. Lyme disease is not officially recognised in Australia but many people may

experience a “Lyme-like” tick-borne illness if bitten here. Lyme is recognised if you were bitten overseas. NOT ALL TICKS ARE HARMFUL, but please take care.

QUICK TIPS: TICKS ARE PRESENT ALL YEAR

WHY CARE?

With a worldwide explosion in tick numbers, tick-borne diseases are escalating to claim an ever-increasing numbers of Australians. The most susceptible are children.

ABOUT TICKSTicks are small arachnids that lay thousands of eggs, which develop in stages from 6 legged larvae, into nymphs and finally, 8 legged adults. They perch at the top of long grass ready to latch on to passing people or animals. Ticks can’t jump, but rather sense carbon dioxide which attracts them. They start feeding at the larvae stage, but for humans, nymphs and adults are most worrisome. To a parasitic tick, a human or animal is just a temporary host from which to feed. Once fed and engorged they drop off. In order to remain concealed while feeding, ticks will attach to hidden spots such as the back of the neck, under the hairline or ANY body part away from view. Ticks burrow into flesh and release an anesthetic while biting and feeding with their barbed mouthparts, so you may not be aware of them. At the active nymph stage in winter, they are as tiny as a poppy seed. In spring and summer, adult ticks are still small and easily missed. (Image 2).

REMOVALOn finding a tick, STAY CALM. DO NOT KILL THE TICK. No matter what you’ve heard, DON’T flick, burn or rub anything on it. The safest method of removal is with fine- tipped tweezers such as TickEase. DON’T SQUEEZE THE TICK’S BODY. Grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible and pull straight up and out in one go and DON’T TWIST. If you find tiny nymph ticks are difficult to remove, two cups of bicarb soda in a bath may help remove them. If removal is unsuccessful, seek prompt medical help.

AUSTRALIAN SITUATIONWe know of the life-threatening effect of ticks on our pets. But what about us? You may have heard of the Borrelia bacteria, Lyme Disease, but to date our government denies the existence of Lyme Disease in Australia. However, thousands of Australian patients are suffering from a “Lyme-like” illness which they attribute to being bitten by ticks.

PREVENTIONDon’t become their meal ticket so avoid ticks. Spray yourself with repellents containing 40% Deet (or natural if sensitive) and Permethrin on your clothes and shoes. ALWAYS check yourself thoroughly after spending time outdoors.

Infected ticks might carry a plethora of harmful pathogens which if you’re bitten, result in infections that are difficult to diagnose and treat. They can seriously affect your quality of life. Early treatment is essential (within 2 weeks) to eradicate infections before they take hold.

INFECTIONS - Australia and OverseasTicks are excellent vectors of both infectious and toxic disease, second only to mosquitoes. Ticks might carry many infections at the same time and pass on to humans including Relapsing Fever Borrelia, Bartonella (and Cat Scratch fever*, transferred from the scratch of an infected cat), Babesia, a malaria-like parasite, Anaplasma, Ehrlichia, Mycoplasma’s, Rickettsia, also called Spotted Fever or Tick Typhus* (also transmitted from lice, fleas and mites) plus Q-Fever* and maybe others. Ticks overseas can carry Lyme and different infections. (*recognised here).

Image 7

SYMPTOMS AND TREATMENTShould you experience any of the following, seek immediate medical assistance: a bullseye (which occurs in only 30% of cases Image 3) or any other rash, flu-like symptoms, fever, sweating, sore throat, muscle aches, stiff neck, tingling, numbness, headaches, dizziness, Bell’s Palsy, joint pain or other “weird unexplained symptoms”. Beware of anaphylactic reactions. Seek immediate medical help, call emergency number 000. If available and suggested, use an Epi-Pen. Watch for possible future tick induced allergies such as Alpha-gal (mammalian meat allergy).

Due to Department of Health regulations, Australian doctors are reluctant to treat patients with antibiotics if bitten in Australia. Doctors can’t ignore your symptoms and it helps if you saved the tick and provide photographic evidence of the rashes. Australian testing may be unreliable; however, an educated practitioner should take into consideration your history, symptoms and conduct blood tests to determine infections. Tests should include ALL tick and other bite infections (see Infections). It is permissible for doctors to treat some infections with antibiotics, and the earlier the better. Always mention if you have travelled overseas and have come back unwell so practitioners can test and treat. NOTE: Negative test results may not indicate the absence of disease. If still unwell and not satisfied with your treatment, seek a second opinion from other practitioners.

I have recently had members ask me how to write a trip report. As trip reports are a fundamental part of the magazine, it’s great when members want to share their interesting experiences with the club community. The general rule of thumb when submitting a report is to provide as much relevant infvormation as possible. For example:

When I receive your details I will create a proof of your report and send it to you for changes or approval. When you write your report, do it from your perspective, how you experienced the trip from start to finish. I find it helpful to look at the map or GPS file as well as photos to jog those memories. When I receive your draft I will create a proof and send it to back to you to make changes if necessary.Hope this helps to get those reports in.

• Specify whether it's Club or Personal Trip. • Trip name and date.• Participants on Trip.

• Photos.• Trip report text.• Selfie or avatar if you perfer.

All trips MUST be accepted by the Trip Coordinator before being advertised in the Club Magazine or forum. Send an email to the Trip Coordinator which details your trip.

Once the Trip Coordinator has approved the trip it is posted in the Trips section of the Club Forum. Once posted on the Club Forum, please ensure that you keep the trip entry up to date with attendees and review it regularly for comments or questions from members.

To comply with our insurance requirements it is essential to complete the required paperwork. Members can use the online digital trip participant form to quickly and easily submit the required details. Alternatively a printable version of the form can be downloaded from the club website (http://www.nissan4x4vic.com.au) or Four Wheel Drive Vic. website (http://www.fwdvictoria.org.au).

All other forms for trip leaders and guests can be downloaded from the club website (http://www.nissan4x4vic.com.au) or FWDV website (http://www.fwdvictoria.org.au).

If you have any ideas about a trip and/or questions speak with the Trip Coordinator ([email protected]) or any of the committee members.

In the past members who wished to run trips were asked to provide sufficient notice for their trips to appear in the Magazine and Club website. FWDV have informed us that provided the following information is supplied, short notice club trips will be covered by FWDV insurance.

The short notice trips will typically be trips one week or less from the intended trip start date. It’s to have been sanctioned by the Club Trip Coordinator prior to commencement and a completed trips participants form is also to be passed on to the Trips Coordinator once the trip has been run.

All we ask is that you provide the Trip Coordinator with a brief outline of the trip, how many vehicles including you own will be participating, and the trip rating. With this information at hand we will endeavour to post your trip on the website for members to see.
