• JohnsHopkinsUniversity(JHU)hasbeenawardedupto$30Mover5yearstoleadanacademicconsortiumofthreeMid-Atlanticuniversitiesthatwillpartnerstudents,post-docs,graduates,andfacultywithresearchprojectsattheNationalInstituteofStandardsandTechnology(NIST)-Gaithersburg.

TheJHUNISTConsortium
• TheProfessionalResearchExperienceProgram(PREP),combinesresearch-intensiveeducationalprogramswithreal-worldexperiences,helpingstudents(andfaculty)understandindustrydemandsandgainknowledgeinadvancingmeasurementscienceandtechnology.
• Areasofinterestinclude(butmaynotbelimitedto)biochemistry,biologicalsciences,chemistry,computerscience,engineering,electronics,materialsscience,mathematics,nanoscalescience,neutronscience,physicalsciences,physics,andstatistics.

• Theprogramsupportsparticipantstoworkon-siteatNISTinGaithersburg,andcoversbothstipend/salaryandgraduatetuition(whereapplicable)forperiodsof3-12months
• CultivatingandnurturingrelationshipswithNISTresearchersisgoingtobecriticaltothesuccessoftheprogramasformalrequestsforsupportofparticipantsmusttechnicallybeinitiatedbyNIST
• ProgramwillberunoutofacentralWSENISTPREPOffice,andavailabletobothWSEandKSASresearchers

Categoriesof“PREPResearchers”:
• Undergraduates:Theycanworkatminimumof10hoursperweek(andfulltimeduringthesummer)foraslongastheyareenrolledintheiruniversityorcollege.
• Post-Bachelor’sDegree:ThoseinthisnewlyofferedcategorycanworkatNISTforuptofiveyearsbeforeenteringgraduateschoolorseekingotheremployment.
• GraduateStudents:Theycanparticipateuptosixyears,aslongastheyarecontinuingtomakeprogresstowardtheirdegree(s)intheparticipatinguniversity.Theyusuallyworkparttimeduringtheschoolyearandfulltimeinthesummer.
• Master’sDegreeHolders:ThisnewlyofferedcategorydescribesindividualswhoarenotpursuingaPh.D.TheycanworkasPREPresearchersforanunlimitednumberofyears.
• Postdocs:Theyworkfulltime,andtheirtenureatNISTcanbeextendedindefinitely.Theirsalarylevelisbasedontheirexperienceandeducation.
• Researchfaculty:Thesemaybeemployeesofalmostanyuniversityorcollege,andcanworkatNISTforuptoayear.Theydon’thavetobetenure-trackfaculty.

• NISTMentor&JHUAdvisoragreeonresearchthrustandidentify“PREPResearcher”candidate.
• NISTMentorrequestsforaPREPResearcherbysubmittinga“proposal”toNIST-GaithersburgPREPCoordinator
• TheproposalissenttotheJHUPREPConsortium.TheJHUPREPConsortiumgeneratesabudgetreflectingtheactualcosttohireandpaythePREPResearcherthroughNISTPREP.BudgetsentbacktoNISTGaithersburgforreview.
• IfexpensesareapprovedbyNISTGaithersburg,formalapplicationandonboardingprocessbegins.
