A fall in bond yield on Friday, 20 December 2019 raised the value of government bonds, which enabled PSU banks to rally. Both, Sensex and Nifty hit an all-time record high four times in five trading sessions. In the week ended on Friday, 20 December 2019, the Sensex jumped 671.83 points or 1.64% to settle at 41,681.54. The Nifty 50 index advanced 185.10 points or 1.53% to settle at 12,271.80. The BSE Mid-Cap index gained 5.57 or 0.04% to settle at 14,835.97. The BSE Small-Cap index rose 58.37 points or 0.44% to settle at 13,391.03. On the economic front, the annual rate of inflation, based on monthly Wholesale Price Index (WPI), stood at 0.58% (provisional) in November 2019 (over November 2018) compared with 0.16% (provisional) for the previous month and 4.47% during the corresponding month of the previous year. The rate of inflation based on WPI Food Index consisting of food articles from primary articles group and food product from manufactured products group increased from 7.65% in October 2019 to 9.02% in November 2019. India's merchandise exports declined 0.3% to $25.98 billion in November 2019 over a year ago. Meanwhile, merchandise imports also dipped 12.7% to $38.11 billion. The trade deficit narrowed 31.0% to $12.12 billion in November 2019 from $16.67 billion in November 2018. As per the data released by the Reserve Bank of India, India's services exports increased 5.3% to $17.70 billion in October 2019 over October 2018. Meanwhile, India's services imports jumped 7.6% to $10.86 billion in October 2019. India's services trade surplus rose 1.8% to $6.83 billion in October 2019 from $6.72 billion in October 2018. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) will significantly lower India's growth forecast from the earlier number of 6.1% for FY20 on 20 January 2020, given the fall in consumption, lack of private investments and sluggish exports. India's gross domestic product (GDP) grew 4.5% in Q2 September 2019, the lowest since Q4 March 2013. The 38th meeting of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council under the Chairmanship of the Union Minister for Finance & Corporate Affairs Nirmala Sitharaman took place on Wednesday, 18 December 2019. The council decided to tax woven and non-woven bags at 18%, compared with 12% at present. It exempted from tax the upfront amount payable for long-term lease of industrial and financial infrastructure plots by any entity that is owned 20% or more by the Centre or state governments. Presently, the exemption is available to an entity having 50% or more ownership of Central or State Government. This change shall become effective from 1 January 2020. Fitch Ratings has affirmed India's Long-Term Foreign-Currency Issuer Default Rating (IDR) at 'BBB-' with a stable outlook. Fitch expects growth to slow to 4.6% in the financial year ending March 2020 (FY20), from 6.8% in FY19, which is still higher than the 'BBB' median of 2.8%. If trades or closed below 12050 next support around 11950 for next week. Its resistance is likely to be seen around 12350 and 12430 for next week. During the last week Bank Nifty has made a low of 31897 and given a bounce up to 32443 and closed above 20 DEMA of 31718. Its immediate support is likely to be seen around 32050 to 31900. Its resistance is likely to be seen around 32550 and 32800 for next week. During the last week USDINR has made a low of 70.80 and given a bounce up to 71.29. Its 20 DEMA resistance is at 71.27. During the last week EURINR has made a lower top formation and closed below 20 DEMA of 79.15. Its immediate support is likely to be seen around 78.70 and 77.90 for next week. Meanwhile, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Thursday (19 December) said it will simultaneously buy and sale government securities worth Rs 10,000 crore each on 23 December under its open market operations (OMO), a move aimed at managing the yields. RBI said it will buy Rs 10,000 crore of 6.45% government bonds maturing in 2029 and simultaneously sell Rs 10,000 crore of short-term bonds maturing in 2020. Further, the minutes of the last meeting of RBI's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) were released on Thursday (19 December). RBI's MPC at its last meeting on 5 December 2019 decided to keep the policy repo rate under the liquidity adjustment facility (LAF) unchanged at 5.15%. Consequently, the reverse repo rate under the LAF remained unchanged at 4.90%, and the marginal standing facility (MSF) rate and the bank rate at 5.40%. According to the minutes, the RBI remains concerned about the slower pace of rate cut transmission in the economy while the sudden spurt in food inflation, though seasonal, seems to have put policy makers at the central bank on alert. The Finance Minister on 13 December 2019 confirmed that the Budget announcement (of 5 July 2019) increasing the statutory FPI (foreign portfolio investment) limit in a company from 24% to the sectoral foreign investment limit, would be implemented effective 1 April 2020. This would lead to MSCI India's weightage in the MSCI EM to rise, Morgan Stanley said in a note. Market may turn volatile due to F&O expiry Global cues, macroeconomic data, movement of rupee against the dollar, Brent crude oil price movement and investments by foreign portfolio investors (FPI) and domestic institutional investors (DII) will be watched in the week ahead. Trading could be volatile next week as traders roll over positions in the F&O segment from the near month December 2019 series to January 2020 series. The December 2019 F&O contracts expire on Thursday, 26 December 2019. Legislative Assembly elections results for Jharkhand will be declared on 23 December 2019. Domestic stock markets will remain closed on Wednesday, 25 December 2019 on account of Christmas. Overseas, Japan will announce All Industry Activity Index (MoM) on Monday, 23 December 2019. Bank of Japan will release its Monetary Policy Meeting Minutes on Tuesday, 24 December 2019. Japan will announce unemployment rate for November on Friday, 27 December 2019. Japan will announce Tokyo CPI, (yoy for December), retail sales and Industrial Production MoM for November on same day. The US will announce Durable Goods Orders (MoM) for November 2019 on Thursday, 24 December 2019.     The Week That Was

    Sensex, Nifty register sharp gains

    Indices continued its bullish trend on a moderately positive global cues and

    optimism over Sino-US trade war. A fall in bond yield on Friday, 20 December 2019

    raised the value of government bonds, which enabled PSU banks to rally. Both,

    Sensex and Nifty hit an all-time record high four times in five trading sessions.

    In the week ended on Friday, 20 December 2019, the Sensex jumped 671.83

    points or 1.64% to settle at 41,681.54. The Nifty 50 index advanced 185.10 points

    or 1.53% to settle at 12,271.80. The BSE Mid-Cap index gained 5.57 or 0.04% to
