MAC CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY The Huskies have a history of competing well at the Mid-American Conference Championships, dating back to 1985 when they won the tournament. NIU has earned at least 40.0 team points in each of the previous fi ve seasons under head coach Ryan Ludwig. The Huskies had two top-fi ve fi nishes in 2012 and 2013. This year, NIU is looking to better its sixth-place fi nish from the 2016 MAC Championships, when the Huskies scored 65 team points and qualifi ed four grapplers for NCAAs.

RANKED HUSKIES HISTORY ON THE LINEFour Huskies have earned national recognition as they head into the MAC Championships. In the NCAA coaches’ panel and RPI rankings released on Feb. 24, Shawn Scott is ranked 11th (12th RPI) at 197-pounds; Steve Bleise is ranked 11th (16th RPI) at 149-pounds; Trace Engelkes is ranked 21st (18 RPI) at 174-pounds; and Caden McWhirter is ranked 30th (RPI) at 157-pounds.

On Feb. 24, the NCAA announced that the Mid-American Conference would receive 37 automatic bids to the 2017 national tournament, which ranks fourth behind the Big Ten, EIWA, and PAC12. The conference received six bids at 133 pounds; fi ve at each of the 125, 149, and 197 weight classes; and three at 165, 174, 184, and 285-pounds. The MAC also nabbed two bids at 141 and 157-pounds.

HISTORY ON THE LINENIU wrestling has sent at least one wrestler to the NCAA Championships for the past 45 consecutive seasons. Last year, Steve Bleise, Austin Eicher, Andrew Morse, and Shawn Scott qualifi ed for the tournament. This year, several Huskies are headed into the MAC Championships seeded in the top four of their weight class, giving NIU wrestling a great chance to extend its program’s streak of sending student-athletes to NCAAs.

UP NEXTPending the results of this weekend, the Huskies could cap off their 2016-17 season March 16-18 at the NCAA Championships in St. Louis, Missouri.
