Sponsor's Message

NIWA again has the pleasure of congratulating students, parents, teachers and supporterswho have worked so hard to ensure the success of the 2015 NIWA Manukau Science &Technology Fair. NIWA has a core interest in promoting science generally and sciencecareers for young New Zealanders, and the Manukau Fair is one of the key ways wepromote this interest in the region.

Science & Technology Fairs provide a great chance for students to actively participate inscience projects. The enthusiasm is clear to see and the Fairs give an opportunity forstudents to gain recognition for excellence and innovation. Across the country thousandsof students have been involved in researching, constructing, and presenting exhibits.Participation in Science & Technology Fairs is on its own a powerful learning tool. It shouldalso be fun.

Naturally, NIWA hopes that many of the students exhibiting at this year’s Fair will go on tocareers in science. The future achievements of our young scientists and technologists willlead the way in growing New Zealand’s prosperity and in maintaining, restoring and caringfor our remarkable environment.

NIWA is the main sponsor of the Waikato, Auckland City, Manukau, Wellington and Bay ofPlenty – Science & Technology Fairs. This sponsorship is part of our long-termcommitment to enhancing science and technology for young New Zealanders.

Thank you to the Kiwanis, judges, schools and all other sponsors for their commitment andsupport in promoting the NIWA Manukau Science & Technology Fair. Without yourcontributions and dedication this exciting science event for the students would not happen.

NIWA Education Manager

Convenor's ReportWelcome to our special guests of tonight's event, the successful young scientists fromacross the Manukau region. I would also like to extend a warm welcome to familymembers, teaching professionals, judges and sponsors. The students will appreciate youbeing here to see them receive their well-deserved accolades.

As I look around the room, I see a lot of well-presented school uniforms, neat hair andnervous faces, especially on the girls (which I would like to point out makes up more thanhalf the award winners). This is certainly a shift from the stereotypical scientist. You know, the one of the old man in a white coat with wild hair and goofy glasses? It is reallyencouraging to see so many students dissolving the stereotype, proving that just becauseyou are young doesn't mean you aren't a forward thinking scientist.

Growing up, I didn't have an amazing opportunity quite like this. It was possibly a goodthing, because if my ideas were up against yours back then, I wouldn't stand a chance! Wehad almost 200 projects this year, the majority in the year 7 and 8 categories. You shouldfeel proud of what you have accomplished and at such a young age. The judges madeseveral comments about the high caliber of projects from such young scientists. They wereespecially amazed by how personalized the scientific questions and technological designswere. Continue to advance society's understanding of science and technology with yourimagination and curiosity in the future.

While students have been poking around the science lab, there has been a lot of workgoing on behind the scenes. I would like to recognize the outstanding efforts of theCommittee members. Without these dedicated individuals we wouldn't be able to pull offsuch a fantastic event. Thanks is also due to the Kiwanis Club of Papaptoetoe, ManurewaHigh School and the MHJC Family and Friends for their assistance.

The Committee and I are also truly grateful for the time given by the students' teachers, mentors and the judges. Your encouragement and feedback allows us to recognize somany future leaders in science and technology. Just a tip – make sure you get thestudents' autographs before they leave, just in case they become famous one day.

Finally, thank you to our sponsors for their continued financial support. NIWA and Storage King, Botany North continue to be our major sponsors. This year we have added two sponsors, the Auckland Science Teachers Association and Auckland Transport.

To end, I would like to leave you with a quote from one of those old men who wore a white coat and had wild hair – Albert Einstein: “To raise new questions, new possibilities, to regard old problems from a new angle, requires creative imagination and marks real advance in science”. I think he sums up what we are here to celebrate this evening – don'tyou? Congratulations everyone.
