  • Whether a novice or seasoned angler, diver or sight-seer, New Jersey party and charter boats offer year-round adventure on the States bay and ocean waters.Party and charter boats let you take advantage of theskill and knowledge of experienced captains and well-equipped vessels at a reasonable cost. All party andcharter boats are inspected and licensed by the U.S.Coast Guard for the passengers safety; all captains arequalified and licensed.

New Jerseys extensive fleet consists of about 100party and over 300 charter boats, which are docked inports at all the major ocean inlets and bays. The basicdifference between the two types of boats is that pas-sengers on a party or head boat pay individually as theyboard on a first come basis until the boat is filled, whilea charter must be reserved in advance by a group of pas-sengers.

Party boats are large vessels, ranging from 60 toover 100 feet in length, that carry anywhere from 20 to150 passengers. They provide anglers with the ability togo fishing at almost any time with no advanced planning, thus allowing them to go when the fish are running. Partyboats sail on a daily schedule for designated species.Bait is provided and rods, reels andtackle may be rented onboard. Coldsoda and beer are available; someboats even have snack bars thatprepare hot food. The cost of the tripis dependent upon the type of fish-ing or activity; for example, bluefish-ing, which usually requires a longrun and large amounts of chum andbait, is slightly more expensive thaninshore wreck or bottom fishing.Childrens fares are usually dis-counted.

Most ports have several partyboats, offering a variety of differenttypes of fishing. There are full, halfand thre e-quarter day, morn ing, afternoon, evening and night tripsavailable. Some party boats featurespecial long-distance trip for tuna, tilefish, cod or whale watching. Suchtrips usually require advanced reser-vations.

Some tips for fishing on partyboats:

Read the fishing reports in thenewspaper to find out which speciesare abundant. Listen to the marineweather forecast the night before atrip. If the forecast is unfavorable, goanother day. Arrive at the dock early, especially on weekends, to secure aplace on the boat. Take plenty ofwarm clothes; even during the sum-

mer, it can be cold on the water. Take something to holdyour catch, preferably a cooler with ice.

Charter boats are typically smaller in size, between25 to 60 feet in length. While most charter boats carry amaximum of 6 to 8 anglers, others carry much largergroups. Many party boats can also be reserved for largegroup charters. The primary advantage of a charter isthat you can reserve the entire boat for a selected group.Charters should be arranged well in advance, up to 6months ahead of time. Decisions that should be madeprior to contacting a charter captain include:

size of your grouptype (age, sex, experience) of people in

groupport of departureapproximate date and timetype (method, species) of fishing or activity

Charter captains require an advanced deposit. Thetrip fee varies considerably, depending upon the lengthof the trip and fuel and bait expenses. All bait and tack-le is supplied on charter boats. Some boats will arrangeto cater food if requested.
