With Rapid urbanization and exponentially rising population Indian cities will need to grow by 400% in less than 50 years.
Delhi has been subjected to rapid urbanization since the late 40s, suffering a backlog of housing shortage ever since. To overcome the challenges, housing became the major program undertaken by the newly set up public agency - The Delhi Development Association (DDA). Since the 60s the DDA became the single largest architect builder in India, making DDA housing synonymous with the image of the city. DDA is the only form of housing affordable by the masses with over 50% of Delhis citizens living in these inflexible and standardized units. With an average household size of 5 people, alterations and additions are a common phenomenon in New Delhi, India. .

A large part of the population loves in units less than 60m2 where provisions have been made for one or two rooms only. Overtime, with evolving household sizes - multi-generational families may split into single family units or vice versa or with evolving socio economic conditions where families may require spaces to run a business from home - occupants may need to need to downsize or up-size their dwellings. Various factors such as joint family structures, as sense of belonging as well as archaic legal obligations makes it difficult to move, forcing them to transform their spaces. Most housing transformations are both horizontal and vertical where two storey blocks are converted into 4-5 storey apartments . The new rooms, balconies, balustrades, windows and other elements are camouflaged with the original building making it difficult to differentiate the old from the new.
Uniworld Development - HOK - Greater Noida, India
Private developers have introduced the model of the high rise tower across the city, working with a one size fits all policy. The project illustrated here depicts the scale and type of developments that continue to erase the notion of housing that can absorb change.

In order to create sensitized living spaces that respond to the cultural diversity and social realities existent in Indian communities, the proposed housing
project is positioned in an anticipatory way. Here an open ended space is made the focus of intervention by its occupants rather than the focus of alterations.

Module co-habitation is based on the %age of possession within a module; the largest area being occupied being 100% and smallest ranging anywhere from 10-20%.
By providing occupants with their desired spaces, there is a possibility of co-habitations where programs supplementary to housing such as student housing, startup businesses, studios and institutions can exist, creating bizarre adjacencies. This is not an uncommon condition in Delhi where spatial limits are expanded to accommodate unimaginable uses in dense urban conditions.

3 Project Location: Lakeshore, Mississauga, OnPROJECTAdvisor: Prof. Ted KesikAs part of the Research studio I was looking at opportunities for providing voluntary participation in standardized unit plans which could allow for change either upgrading or downgrading a unit as household type changes over time. This unit plan was achieved by using the concrete core for shear walls and a column and capital construction.
The building typology is a Tower Cluster, where the modify-able units are located within the towers that can be accessed through a three storey base building housing typical retail and residential programs.

URBAN ASSEMBLAGE
The project site is the CN Lands located in Pointe Saint Charles, Borough of South West, Montreal, Canada. Being an industrial designated area with existing structures of the CN factories still on site, it is an appropriate location for situating a Modular Prefabrication factory and revitalizing the industrial functioning of the site. The site has been undergoing soil regeneration through programs such as Revi-soils and efforts are underway to decontaminate the site and deem it fit for occupation. However, considering the challenges faced by the community of Pointe Saint Charles such as lack of connection to the city, growing population, high drop out rates from schools and lack of English Academic facilities in the community, the Modular Prefabrication factory must respond to existing issues of the community and consequently the development of the CN lands as a whole.

Centre for Alternative Manufacturing (Design Lab)
This proposal addresses the innovative production methods, design analysis and management techniques of the Modular Prefabrication factory and utilities it as a precursor to a training program. The Modular Prefabrication factory produces housing modules and concrete components; sharing its machinery, equipments and facilities with the training school. On the other hand, the training school produces a skilled workforce and a design lab feeding its innovation to the factory. In essence, the Centre for Alternative Manufacturing creates a feedback loop and responds to the educational needs of Pointe Saint Charles.
Crafts Studio (Locomotive Factory-Creative Arena)
The history of the site is preserved by reprogramming the existing nonfunctional Locomotive Factory to a Crafts Studio. The building is re-programmed to facilitate the cultural development of the community by providing spaces for day care, workshops, exhibits, open spaces and community programs. The Locomotive factory can conceptually be conceived as Volumes within a Volume, also providing subsidized town houses and non-subsidized town houses with expansive communal spaces on the accessible Green roof.
Enlivened Community
The product of the factory - Modular housing - occupies the site and provides Retirement housing, low income subsidized Row housing and non subsidized Row housing. The Green Roofs of the Crafts Studio and the Design Lab are accessible and provide added spaces for community activities and help offset the urban heat island effect.
In essence, the project with the intervention of the factory attempts to convert the former industrial lands into a mixed use, mixed density Urban Assemblage.
