Maintenance Tip of the Month HOLIDAY LIGHTS

Holiday Lights are safety tested by Underwriters Laboratories (UL), Electrical Testing Laboratories (ETL) and the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) and their respective initials will be noted on the products packaging if compliance has been achieved. It is best to use the cooler-burning "mini" lights. Use light sets that have fuses in the plugs. Inspect each set of holiday lights and discard any set with cracked or broken sockets, frayed or bare wires, or loose connections. Replace burned out bulbs with bulbs of the same wattage. Use power strips to add an extra layer of electrical protection.

Holiday Greetings from Able

Handy Information to Make Life EasierSince we have fewer classes in December, we thought we’d pass along some quick tips that you or a friend might find useful ~

Want an easier and free option to reduce your risk of identity theft?According to the LA County Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA): “You can help prevent identity theft by putting a security freeze on your credit file. A freeze stops the major credit reporting agencies from sharing your credit information with potential creditors. Most businesses will not open new credit without access to this information. And a freeze does not affect your credit rating and can be temporarily lifted if you need access to your credit reports (e.g. if you are planning to buy a car, open a new line of credit, etc.).” The service is free for adults age 65 and over (there is a minimal fee for individuals under 65).

The LA County DCA offers a wide range of services to protect you from fraud. They also investigate consumer complaints and can provide mediation between businesses, individuals, neighbors, etc. If you need help, call (800) 593-8222 or visit www.dca.lacounty.gov.

Are you being overwhelmed with solicitations from companies, including nonprofits, you’ve never heard of? You can contact the Direct Marketing Association and ask to be removed from their prospect list. It is a free service and should cut down on the amount of unsolicited mail you receive from new organizations. You can go online at www.dmachoice.org or call (212) 768-7277, ext. 1888.

You can also opt out of receiving “prescreened” credit and insurance offers. To opt out for five years, visit www.optoutprescreen.com or call toll-free (888) 567-8688. This service is operated by the major consumer reporting companies.

Don’t forget to RSVP for our Holiday LuncheonTuesday, December 10 12:00 Noon – 1:30 PM Activity Center Meeting Room$7.00 per person ($5 for current LIFE members)Whatever you celebrate, it’s always more fun to share with friends. And that’s what the holiday luncheon is all about. No program. No agenda. Just delicious food, desserts, beverages and good cheer. You must RSVP by December 5 at (323) 936-7194. Payment will be collected at the door (cash or check).

LIFE offers classes and programs for adults age 50 and over. For more information, or to get on our mailing list, please call (323) 936-7194.
