    Principals ReportDear parents and caregivers,

In mentioning the need to keep an eye on upcoming events last week I was hoping

to keep everyone abreast of the various activities of this fast paced term. In addition

to the recent release of the date for our annual Open Day and Book Week Parade I

am now able to release to you a draft timetable of proceedings on the day. Much the

same as last year, and dependant on running times etc. our day of September 11th

    will run something like;

9:30 am Concert and performances in the hall 11:00 am Morning Tea

    11:30 am Open classrooms

    12:00 Noon Book Parade

1:00 pm Picnic lunch in the grounds.

Next week I will send more details but pencil it in the diary now.

In recent weeks I have attempted to make you all aware of the critical role you play

in your childs learning, particularly focussing on learning to read. I continue this

week with some more information from noted Australian author and educator, Paul

    Jennings.

In his book The Reading Bug Jennings attempts to create a situation where

parents can become expert in supporting their childs learning to read. And what are

the suggested steps to this expertise? In a nutshell Jennings suggests that if children

are to be life long readers, we must instil a love of books, that because of their own

experiences many parents try to teach reading as if the words, letters and sounds can

be shovelled in like soggy vegetables. They cant.

Conversely, the suggestion is that we create a world of useful and fascinating print. We are going to praise, stimulate and

accept. We are going to develop an environment in which reading will naturally occur. There will be books and magazines

and papers and calendars and charts and summaries and pictures and stories everywhere. Give it some thought.

Unfortunately, I must report that late last week one of our students was exposed to what we sometimes call stranger

danger when she was approached by unknown persons while making her way to a friends place in the afternoon. Thank-

fully, all is well and appropriate arrangements have been put into place, however, these occurrences alert our vigilance and

necessitate a revisit to our keep them safe messages. All staff and classes will revisit essential strategies in a sensible and

sensitive manner. Anything you could do to reinforce such in a similar way, would be a real bonus as the kids will often

    default to hyper-vigilance. Many thanks.

    My very best wishes,

    Rob Hutchinson

(part or full) may be made online.

    Girls Knock-Out Touch

Our girls knock-out touch team played a spectacular game against Werrington County last week. It was an exciting gameand although the girls played brilliantly, they were narrowly defeated 6 to 5. Congratulations to the team on their effort,

enthusiasm, team spirit and support of each other.

Special mention to Amaya Moxham who was selected for the team and although suffering an injury and not expected to

play, turned up to support her teammates on the day and went on for a short period, scoring a try. Well done Amaya! Another

special mention to Brookie Williams who was also selected to play and sustained an injury that put her out of all sporting

activities for months. She did a fantastic job of helping to coach and train the team prior to their match and supporting and

guiding them on the day. Well done Brookie!

Many thanks to Andrew Williams who ran a training session for the team and stepped up on the day to umpire the match.

The team consisted of: Katherine Bettencourt, Lauren Allan, Ally Whiteld, Lauren Bailey, Ella Lynch, Jade Colman, Nina

Ho, Emily Smalley, Casey Haydon, Hannah Hughes, Amaya Moxham and Brooke Williams.
