The spirit of philanthropy that fills the pages of this 2014 Annual Report for the NMC Foundation casts a bright light on the important resource that Northwestern Michigan College represents for our region. Our community has demonstrated its confidence in our mission for more than sixty years beginning in 1951 when a few visionary leaders launched a fund drive to build a community college like no other—a college that has become truly world-class in its impact.

If you drive along the Leelanau Peninsula in the fall, you will see lush vineyards heavy with this year’s crop destined to become award winning wines. When you visit the Dennos Museum you will experience the work of renowned artists from around the world, and actually meet and talk with them. Dining in one of our outstanding area restaurants, you may be greeted by an alumnus of our culinary program—a talented and creative chef who prepares the meals that make our region a popular destination.

On campus, you are likely to encounter a student who is conducting research in collaboration with scientists in Costa Rica or another who is developing cutting edge technology in underwater robotics. You will find community members and students rubbing shoulders with influential world leaders in lectures and conferences; feel the way innovative service learning inspires both dual-enrolled high school seniors and returning veterans sharing a class. Off campus, you’ll find NMC creating training experiences for area manufacturers that are leading the way in global markets, and for companies that are preparing to bring new jobs to our region in the next few years.

The impact of NMC’s programs can be seen and felt throughout Northern Michigan and well beyond. Each year, as I consider the work of the NMC Foundation, I am so grateful to the many friends and supporters whose names appear in this report. Your gifts of time, talent and treasure have made our region stronger and more vibrant, and your commitment has positively influenced the lives of thousands of students. As I sit down to write this letter I’m struck by the fact that this is now the third one I’ve written. I joined the College as part of the Foundation team in the fall of 2010. Before that, I had enjoyed countless opportunities to benefit from all that the College brings to our community. As a young child, my mom (then an NMC employee) would bring my sister and me to the NMC Barbecue each year. While she undoubtedly kept busy with an official volunteer role, we kept busy at the cake walk! We participated in College for Kids programming each year, as my daughter now does. During my college years, I returned to Traverse City and NMC to pick up additional college credits to transfer back to MSU.

I know first-hand the tremendous impact NMC has on our community and individuals like you and me. Clearly, these are just a few of the reasons that we choose to support NMC philanthropically. We don’t have to look far in the community to find a shining example of what gifts to NMC have helped to accomplish.

Just today, I met a young woman who shared with me what a great value her NMC coursework has been on her journey toward obtaining a Bachelor’s degree through the University Center. The student stories we hear on a regular basis are broad and varied. They range from those for whom a college education would not have been possible without scholarship support to those who are impressed beyond measure with the technology and hands-on learning opportunities that NMC offers. Your support makes all of this possible.

Take a drive on Old Mission or the Leelanau peninsula and you won’t go more than a few miles before passing a vineyard or a tasting room.

For decades, the vineyards were planted and tended and the wine made by individuals who were largely self-taught, or educated elsewhere. Now that’s changing, as NMC partners with Michigan State University to train the grape and wine industry’s next generation.

In 2009, NMC and MSU established a two-year viticulture certificate program. Students earn both an NMC associate’s degree and a viticulture certificate from MSU’s Institute of Agriculture Technology. In just five years, the program has become the state’s best example of a viticulture training program, said coordinator Brian Matchett.

“Hands down, the partnership between MSU and NMC is the agricultural education model,” said Matchett, whose position was initially supported by the Foundation.

As further evidence, he pointed to the Bruce Simpson Winemaker Scholarship that the Leelanau Peninsula Vintners Association, representing 25 area wineries, awarded for the first time last summer. Four students

enrolled in the NMC-MSU program each received $1,000.

“The industry is supporting what we’re doing,” Matchett said.

Mike Altesleben, 35, has witnessed that firsthand. He grew up in Dearborn with no agricultural experience. Unable to find a job in his first career field, a love of the outdoors led him to the viticulture program. He enrolled in 2010, worked his first harvest in 2011, graduated in 2012 and is now assistant winemaker at Brys Estate on Old Mission, a job he loves.

“You work so much in your life, you might as well find a career that isn’t really work, it’s like a lifestyle,” said Altesleben.

Studying in the same region he’s now working helped Altesleben immensely. He considered going to the West Coast for his education. But in that drier region, he might not have learned how to handle the fungi that thrive in Michigan humidity.

Next time you open a bottle of Michigan wine, know that you can confidently raise a glass to the industry’s future.

For more than 20 years, the Dennos Museum Center has been bringing world-class art, artists and performers into our community. We’re making a distinct imprint as a museum and positioning ourselves for international press by consciously evolving and stepping into the national spotlight.

The year opened with Contemporary Quilts by the Beaver Island artist Gwen Marston and Making Paper Dance: The Art of Pop-Up Books. In the spring, the Dennos welcomed the Mystical Arts of Tibet followed by a spectacular installation of work by Korean artist Seungmo Park: Meticulously Snipped and Wrapped and images by contemporary Chinese photographers in an exhibition titled, How to Return?. In the fall, the amazing paper artistry of Li Hongbo of Beijing and Matt Shlian of Ann Arbor and the Infinite Space installation of Chul Hyun Ahn graced our walls. Concurrently, photography of our own Ken Scott and events and exhibitions surrounded the international event called The Big Draw.

In the Milliken Auditorium, a variety of great concerts explored the music of Brazil, Ireland, Tibet, Africa and elsewhere along with American blues, jazz and roots music. An extraordinary concert from Bob James was held held in association with the opening of the Seungmo Park’s exhibition, a concert that may find its way to becoming a Live from Milliken CD.

We’re also sending artwork from the Dennos out into the world. The Seungmo Park exhibition organized by the Dennos has traveled on to the Marshall Fredericks Sculpture Museum at SVSU and the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts. How to Return? has gone on to the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts and will be at Wayne State University in the spring of 2015.

THE DENNOS MUSEUM PLAYS ON A NATIONAL STAGE

Internationally, the Dennos was invited as one of 20 US museums to submit proposals for exhibitions from its collections to potentially travel to Chinese museums at a conference organized by the Nanjing Museum and the American Federation for the Arts. The Dennos’ Executive Director, Gene Jenneman, traveled to Nanjing, China from November 17-20 to spearhead this effort and submit proposals.

Our proposals included the Dennos’ traveling Inuit art exhibition, an exhibition of the photography of Traverse City’s own Greg Seman, as well as prints by Josef Domjan, who was awarded the recognition of Master of the Color Woodcut in China in 1995.

A significant bequest from the estate of Art and Mary Schmuckal made many of the highlighted exhibits above possible. The generosity of our friends and supporters enables the Dennos to play on an international stage with both the exhibits we bring to Traverse City and the reach we’re creating for our traveling exhibits. You make it happen. Thank You!

Richard and Diana Milock honored as NMC Fellows, the highest honor the College can bestow.

Through both personal contributions and their Begonia Charitable Foundation, the couple has supported many programs and endeavors at NMC for several years. They combine their philanthropy with volunteerism. Diana Milock has been a member of the NMC Foundation Board since 2011 and serves on its major gifts committee. “As a philanthropist and as a Board member, Diana is remarkable. She always brings ideas and is always enthusiastic as we work together to plan and execute them,” said Rebecca Teahen, executive director of the NMC Foundation. “If she cannot make a meeting, she requests to meet with me one-on-one to ensure she is fulfilling Board expectations.”

For Diana, the ultimate measurement of philanthropy is personal: “It’s satisfying for me to know that I can do it, and I act on it,” she said.

The Milocks’ giving has included the Commitment Scholarship program, Adopt-a-Student Scholarships, and most recently, the Dennos Museum Center and the Great Lakes Culinary Institute. Their support of a new sound system for Millken Auditorium was given with the purpose of also supporting NMC’s Audio Technology program, making Milliken a classroom lab for concert sound instruction.

NMC has named Fellows each year since 1964 as a way of recognizing and thanking those individuals who have made special contributions to the College.

CRAIG LAFAVE 2014 HONOREE

LaFave, from the class of 2001, is president of Olmsted Products and its parent company, Oilgear Co. He began at Olmsted, a manufacturer of specialty high-flow, high-pressure industrial hydraulic valves and control systems, while still a student. From his first day as a draftsman, LaFave demonstrated a desire to learn and contribute to every aspect of the company: from design to production to sales and customer service. His work ethic quickly propelled him through the company. Within five years he was named general manager, responsible for the strategic direction of the company along with the ownership. In 2008, when Olmstead leadership sold the company, LaFave became president, reporting directly to the CEO of the new parent company, The Oilgear Company.

JOHN MILITELLO 2014 HONOREE

After studying commercial art at NMC, Militello, class of 1990, went on to earn a BFA in Fine Arts from the College for Creative Studies in Detroit. He then moved to New York City where he founded a boutique design agency and led the creative effort for brands like Volvo and Mercedes Benz. Presently he is head of creative for Google’s agency-like Zoo team. Based in New York, he leads a 14-person creative team and represents the company at prominent industry events. In addition to his day job, John is also an adjunct professor at New York’s School of Visual Arts, where he teaches a class in digital advertising. Militello was a speaker at the 2014 Tedx Traverse City event.

Nahikian, class of 1981, went on to graduate from Lawrence Technological University with a Bachelor’s of Science in electrical engineering. After graduating she worked in a full-service architectural firm until 1990, when she joined the Steelcase family of companies in Grand Rapids. She presently serves as director of Global Environmental Sustainability at Steelcase, heading a global, cross-functional effort to advance the company’s business fitness through sustainability and to ensure Steelcase achieves its sustainability leadership goals.

Greg Fawcett is a tough critic. Greg spent his career in data analysis and data management for colleges and universities. “I have volumes of research on hundreds of colleges and universities telling me exactly how effective and efficient they each are. We don’t give to any of them, except NMC.” Jan, an elementary teacher for 37 years, and involved in state level education policy agrees: “all education is necessary, but locally focused programs are crucial.”

As lovers of good food and wine, Fawcett and Updike became involved with NMC through the Great Lakes Culinary Institute (GLCI). Once the couple began working with NMC Foundation staff, it wasn’t long before they decided to create the Fawcett-

Updike Culinary Scholarship and include NMC in their estate plans.

“The Foundation staff has helped to make this process easy for us. I know I can trust NMC to be good stewards of our scholarship fund and our future planned gift.” Fawcett said.

The couple has enjoyed getting to know the faculty and staff leading the college, and specifically the Culinary Institute. Director Fred Laughlin is grateful for the additional scholarship support for GLCI students. “This is one of NMC’s more expensive programs. Many of our students are working and going to school, scholarships like this one make it possible for them to stay in school and complete the program.” Laughlin said.

Giving With Gratitude In October 2013, Sheri Constantin was in intensive care at Munson Medical Center, recuperating from emergency surgery to relieve a subdural hematoma—bleeding on her brain.

The surgery had been successful, but Constantin, then 63, still had a headache. Then, an ICU nurse arrived for an early-morning shift. She noticed that Constantin’s IV line was crimped – blocking the flow of pain medication. She unblocked it.

“I can vividly remember how that felt,” Constantin said. ‘I felt like the flood of an angel’s care came over me.”

Constantin recovered completely, but the six days of outstanding nursing care she received at Munson from NMC nursing alumni remain as vivid as the relief she felt that morning. Seeking a way to show her gratitude, she and her husband Steve chose to endow the Barbara Mikowski Student Nurse Resource Fund.

Dedicated to helping nursing students overcome financial barriers to graduation, nursing faculty

can tap into the fund to provide books, scrubs, gas, childcare or any need other than tuition to student nurses.

“It was our way of humbly saying thank you to the nurses, most of whom came from NMC,” Constantin said. “They were so outstanding both to me and my family.”

Barbara Mikowski graduated with NMC’s first nursing class in 1963. She established the Fund in 2013, hoping to provide money for the incidental needs that tuition or academic scholarships don’t cover. It’s those kinds of costs – unexpected car repair, for instance – that could potentially derail a promising student from graduating.

And if that student doesn’t graduate, they can’t get put their skills to work with patients.

“Here we have a program that is obviously top notch,” Sheri Constantin said. “It was very special to us to know that we might be able, in some small way, fill an unmet need in this very hardworking nursing student population.”

THE PRESIDENT’S CLUB Established to provide annual giving recognition for alumni, faculty, staff, and friends. It recognizes those individuals who provide annual leadership support.

The NMC Annual Fund is the resource for establishing a broad foundation of sustainable funding for NMC’s programs and scholarships. Gifts made to the Annual Fund support a range of needs that impact current and future students who come to NMC for innovative programs and life-changing opportunities.

Gifts to programs support a wide range of NMC activities including unmanned vehicle technology for the Freshwater Studies program, a new Veteran’s Writing Workshop program, and the addition of our newest baccalaureate degree in Maritime Technology.

NMC serves a diverse learning population. From the high school valedictorian earning credits to transfer to a University, to the single mother pursuing an education to open doors to a new career, it is essential that we build a pool of resources which will ensure that financial barriers do not stand in the way of our learners achieving their full potential.

The Dennos Museum Center and WNMC Community radio provide rich cultural experiences to our community, made possible only through generous philanthropic support.
