With close to R56-million to be spent on a number of upgrade projects at parks and nature reserves in Limpopo within the next six months, towns like Mokopane, Modimolle and Lephalale stand to gain huge economic and social benefits.

The flagship project on the list of parks to be upgraded will be at Doorndraai Dam near Mokopane. During a recent business chamber meeting in Mokopane, Du Toit Malan from the Limpopo Tourism Agency told businesspeople that slightly more than R30-million will be spent on this resort.

Lost generator recovered

In the early hours of Sunday morning warrent officer Jan Oberholzer of the Lephalale Police found a generator near the NTK in Ellisras. Police invited the owner to come to the police station with some form of proof of ownership to have the generator returned to him or her.

It is for this reason that the Lephalale Development Forum (LDF) was established in July 2008, bringing various public and private stakeholders such as Eskom, Exxaro and the Lephalale Municipality together as partners in growth.

Initially the aim was to review the impact of the development of the Medupi power station and the Grootegeluk Mine expansion (GMEP) on the town, as economic growth placed major strain on the existing rural infrastructure. Today, with a lot of new in-frastructure in place, the LDF identifies and facilitates projects which greatly benefit the Lephalale community.

“The LDF was established as a neutral stakeholder forum to work towards an inte-grated development drive within the Lepha-lale municipal area, contributed to by all of the stakeholders. We established five wor-king groups to address issues such as local economic development, infrastructure and housing needs, social needs and challenges, labour- and skills development requirements, as well as environmental sustainability chal-lenges,” says LDF coordinator, Jacques Snyman.

Lephalale Development Forum makes great strides

Under the banner of Local Economic Development, Anglo Zimele Fund, Mitsubi-shi Hitachi Power Systems Africa (Pty) Ltd, Shanduka Black Umbrellas, the Medupi Leadership Initiative and Exxaro have ex-panded the original Hitachi Hub to include Shanduka Black Umbrellas (SBU) and Anglo Zimele in order to offer a broader range of funding and incubator services, including access to office facilities and coaching for up to three years, to further the development and sustainability of SMMEs in the area. The Lephalale Enterprise Development Centre was launched in April and more than 20 businesses are now at various stages in the incubation process.

“Growing businesses in Lephalale is a major focus for the forum and instead of each company establishing its own hub, these role players were brought together to share their expertise and knowledge with business ow-ners. Our aim is to collaborate with partners in the private sector, government and civil society to address low levels of entrepreneur-ship and high failure rates of emerging busi-nesses. The original Hitachi Hub managed to create more than 280 jobs over the last two

years through their stimulation of growth in the SMME sector,” Snyman adds.

In the agricultural sector the LDF has brought together Exxaro, Eskom, the Trans-formation Enablement Trust, various com-munities and agricultural experts to establish self-feeding schemes as well as income gen-erating projects. “Overall, these projects have been a major success and currently supply produce to local supermarkets.

A total of three projects (Mokuruanyane community, Amokelani Cooperative, Moron-gwa community trust) have been established by the various stakeholders involved, and a fourth site has already been identified to further expand these projects. These projects are successful because of the sustained effort and contribution by all the stakeholders.”

Eleven additional projects have also been initiated by the department of Agriculture and are all functioning and producing a wide range of vegetables. “These projects have become a major integrated team effort where stakeholders work together to ensure sustain-ability and growth of the projects. It has also brought a mind shift for the local community in terms of working towards a gainful future. By stakeholders working together, the impact of these projects is significantly increased.”

“Identifying needs in communities and driving skills development that starts at school level has also been at the heart of the effort of the LDF,” says Snyman. “Exxaro and

Eskom are both working with the Department of Education to improve, repair and maintain infrastructure at schools in the Lephalale area in an integrated manner. Both companies have each adopted a number of primary and secondary schools in the area, which they are supporting wholeheartedly. Apart from infrastructure, student needs, teacher needs, and equipment needs among others, are also supported. The adoption of a school really means that the stakeholders support every aspect that is needed to ensure the school is a well-functioning school with improv-ing results. Lephalale will need engineers, technicians and a range of other skilled and semi-skilled workers to help it grow into the energy hub and the first new post-apartheid democratic city of South Africa. We need to focus on skills development and it starts with the very young,” says Snyman. Schools and learners have also benefited from Saturday schools with extra help in subjects such as Maths, Science and English.

The LDF will continue to identify commu-nity needs and bring stakeholders together to address these needs to the betterment of all our people. “We are excited by what has been achieved through private and public stakeholders working together in a collective effort toward sustainable growth, and they are all commended and thanked for the huge contribution made to the greater Lephalale area,” says Snyman.

Growing a town into a major city and eventually into South Africa’s energy hub, takes a collective effort and in Lephalale major role-players are working together to do just that.

A 40-year-old man and his accomplice allegedly robbed a foreign business man of R500, airtime and cigarettes before fleeing on foot.

The victim alerted the community who assisted immediately and gave chase. They caught up with the suspect and beat him un-til he collapsed. The accomplice escaped.

After the man regained consciousness he

pointed out that his accomplice resided in Mzombane, another village near Mahwelereng. Community members forced the man to search for his accomplice with them, he, however, passed away in the vehicle they were transporting him in.

The Mahwelereng police was then called in and 33 men and six women were arrested.

A case of murder is being investigated.

Genl.

Sy beserings was noodlottig.

plaasaanvalle.

Hitch-hikers hijack carA motorist was assaulted and his car hijacked when he gave three men a lift from the Marapong car wash to the Spar store, also in Marapong, on Saturday.

The three approached the man for a lift when he passed by the car wash. They got in and asked him to drop them off at the Spar, but on their way there they produced a firearm and pointed it at the driver when he stopped at Religogile street.

He was forced from the vehicle and assaulted. They then tied his hands and feet and dropped off at the informal settle-ment next to Matimba power station.

Police are investigating the case, but to date no arrests have been made.

- Mariska Ehlers

Guard hijacked and shotA security guard was hijacked and shot last Friday in Marapong. The alleged hijacker then took the guard's company vehicle.

The guard got into his private vehicle to get help but lost control and drove into a private dwelling where a 41-year-old woman was asleep in her bed.

Both the guard and the woman were taken to hospital to receive treatment for their injuries.

A case of carjacking and attempted mur-der is being investigated by the Lephalale Police.

Members of the community can assist the Police by being on the lookout for a motor vehicle with the registration number WHT 071 GP.

Police mop up illegal foreignersAlmost 70 foreigners were arrested in Lephalale, Witpoort and Steenbokpan during a clean-up operation held by police on Monday.

Foreigners later had a second opportunity to present their work and living permits at the police station.

Those who could show the necessary documents were released and the rest appeared in Lephalale Magis-trate’s Court on Tuesday.

Illegal imigrants remain a big problem in Lephalale as many came here to find jobs when the local construction and building industry boomed. But with the building industry in the doldrums, most of these foreigners are now unemployed with many resorting to crime.

Lees meer hieroor in volgende week se Noordelike Nuus of kontak vir Daan Holtzhausen by sel: 082 507 6487 of ds. Jacques Erasmus by sel: 072 653 9845.

Audrey’s Riding school hosts a holiday camp every October. This camp is for all kids aged 5 and older. With smiles this wide (photo right) you can be sure that this year’s camp was en-joyed. The campers complete a muddy obstacle course. Under, over, in mud and on the swing, over a pool of more mud, they worked together and learned to be a team. Sports, horse riding, swimming in the farm dam, and working as a team were just some of the things planned. Pic-tured here are Cayla Essakow, Sebastian Mostert, Michelle Duvenhage, Andeon Jordaan, Thinus Jacobs, Anri Eloff, Bjrön Marais, Simone Mostert, Jessica Essakow, Cariska Pieters, Lizemari Jordaan, Wilhelm McAlpine, and Zandrè Jacobs.
