Miyama Kayabuki-no-SatoYou could enjoy the refreshing green in summer and snowwhite scenery in winter. More than three quarters of the cottages in this village have thatched (kayabuki) roofs,a rare and valuable sight to see in Japan today. The cottages spotted along the tiered lands make the classical scenery of good old Japan. The whole district is designated as one of the Important Preservation Districts for Groups of Traditional Buildings. There are kayabuki lodgings, restaurants, and souvenir shops. Cottages are illuminated in the snowy landscape, creating a view of fantasy. You can join in making snow garden lanterns. (late Jan.- early Feb.)
Traditional agricultural and everyday tools are exhibited in Miyama Archive of Local History and Folklore. You can also see the actual layouts of the house and the attic.
To prevent catching fi re from any neighbor disaster, all cottages are equipped with water guns. All residents in the village test the water guns simultaneously on May 20 and Dec.1. Many tourists and amateur photographers come to see the fantastic view.

Ohno Dam ParkThe lake where the dam is situated is admired as ‘the rainbow lake’. In spring, more than 1000 cherry trees come in bloom. Hiyoshi DamThe dam is a multipurpose dam, one of the biggest in scale in the Kinki District. It is the fi rst dam that is ‘open to public’. You can go and see inside the body of the dam. A prize winner of Japan Dam Award 2013.Naka, Hiyoshi-cho 0771-72-0171(Hiyoshi Dam management offi ce)
Hiyoshi, noted as ‘Belly button of Kyoto’, is situated in the center of Kyoto Pref. It has large dams, the Hiyoshi Dam,and a roadside station close to the dam with a natural onsen and a swimming pool. Both are popular spots to visit for tourists as well as residents. Enjoy barbequing in the roadside station and mountain lodges, go and spend active holidays in cottages surrounded by green. A former residence of Joan Naito,

Sonobe lies alongside the San'in Kaido, a major road that runs from Kyoto to San'in region. The road coming from Kyoto crosses over Kameoka and runs through Sonobe to San'in.It is a charming place to stop by for people heading for Miyama and Kyotamba. Vaguely but f irmly, you can feel the wonders and deepness of its history; the historical remains of Sonobe Castle, and the oldest tenmangu ‘Ikimi-Tenmangu Shrine'.
Located alongside Ooigawa River, which joins Katsuragawa River after flowing over Hozu-Kyo Gorge. People enjoy cherry blossoms in spring and fi reworks f e s t i v a l i n s u m m e r b y t h e riverside. You can feel the town’s deep h istor ica l atmosphere through hiking in the remains of Yagi Castle, a castle once owned by Christian samurai Joan Naito. If you are lucky you can see the beautiful scenery of ‘sea of clouds’ from up in the castle remains.
Ruri-kei RavineAn hour and a half drive from Osaka, Kyoto, and Kobe. It is within the Kyoto Pref. Nature Park designated as a place of scenic beauty. A 4 km. stroll course alongside the river will take you to waterfalls and rocks of all sizes and show you the marvel of nature. Cherry blossoms in spring and leaves in autumn are also beautiful. The ravine is selected by the Environment Agency as ‘100 Soundscapes of Japan worth handing down to next generation’.
Ooigawa Riverside Cherry BlossomsA major cherry blossom view point by the downstream of the town symbol Ooibashi Bridge. There are about 30 someiyoshino cherry trees on the right bank and there is a grass park with about 100 someiyoshino and shidarezakura cherry trees on the left bank. Roadside Station Springs HiyoshiHiyoshi OnsenLocated just below the Hiyoshi Dam.A superb place to feel the nature. It is a multipurpose roadside station for families to enjoy barbeques, various types of sports activities, foods, indoor hotspring swimming pool, as well as the good natural onsen.Local delicacies like ‘Hiyoshi Dam Curry’ and ‘Kuromame soymilk herbal-Ramen’ are popular. Izutsu YatsuhashiHonpo ; ShinkoetsuYou can see freely the production line of the famous Kyoto souvenir sweets Yatsuhashi. Yatsuhashi is shaped like koto, a Japanese zither. There is a café where you can relax with a wide view of nature, ideal for a rest from driving. The place is fi lled with scent of cinnamon. You can make your own yatsuhashi to take home (reservation required).

Ikimi-Tenmangu ShrineAmong the 12,000 tenmangu shrines in Japan, this one is the oldest and the only tenmangu that was founded at the time when Sugawara no Michizane, a 9th century scholar, poet and states man who was deifi ed after death, was still alive. Since the day that Takebe Genzo, who also appears in the story of the play ‘Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami’ fi rst worshipped the place as holy, the shrine has been carefully handed down to 38 successors for over 1,100 years. Kyoto Taishakuten TempleThe temple, entitled Shiunzan, was founded by Wake no Kiyomaro in 780 A.D. Seigenji TempleA Buddhist priest Mokujiki-Shonin wandered all over Japan, sculpturing his unique sentaibutsu statues wherever he went. He arrived here at Seigenji Temple when he was 89 years old and stayed here for 5 months. Saikoji TempleIt is a subsidiary temple of Jingoji Temple in Takao, Kyoto. Jingoji temple was founded in 756A.D. by Roben,then highest ranked priest of Todaiji Temple in Nara. The art museum is renovated from a 150 year old thatched cottage. It exhibits paintings, ceramic arts, glass works, and wood works of artists in turn.
