Valedictorian SalutatorianAlexis Lawton

Alexis Lawton is a member of the National Honor Society,

Envirothon, vocal ensemble and the chorus. She was a member of the Varsity Lacrosse and Tennis teams. She received the Girl Scouts Silver Award and the Outstanding Accompanist Award. Molly Carney is a member of the National Honor Society.

Corey Fletcher

Corey Fletcher is a member of the National Honor Society. He

played on both the Varsity Baseball and Golf teams. He received a Wilkes Academic Scholarship and will attend Wilkes in the fall, majoring in pharmacy.

Mike Jeske

Mike Jeske is a member of the National Honor Society

and served as Student Council secretary and SADD treasurer. He is a Binghamton Special Olympics and Catholic Charities food pantry volunteer. As a member of the Varsity Football, Basketball and Baseball teams, he received many awards, including basketball and baseball STAC All-Star, baseball and

football Division III All-Star and WBNG-TV Athlete of the Week. He is a United States Army National Scholar Athlete, received the Joseph P. Mangan American Legion Award, and is the Business Education Student of the Year. He will attend the University of Albany, majoring in fi nance. He plans to work for a major corporation.

Elizabeth Tiffany

Elizabeth Tiff any is a member of the National Honor

Society and its tutoring program, SADD, CF newspaper, and Varsity Girls Lacrosse for four years. She participated in Cornell’s “Fossil Finders” study and the CF Spanish service trip to Costa Rica. She received the following: Rotary Youth Leadership Award, American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Award and a St.

Lawrence University Scholarship. In the fall, she will attend St. Lawrence University where she plans to major in global studies.

Kacey Deamer

Kacey Deamer is a member of the National Honor Society,

Environthon, the CF newspaper, Upstagers, and Chorus and Vocal Ensemble. She is also a tutor, was in the band, and was a basketball cheerleader. She has been a member of the Varsity Tennis team since seventh-grade. She received an Ithaca College grant, the Rod Serling Scholarship and the Park

Finalist Award. She will attend Ithaca College to major in journalism and environmental studies.

Andrew Hallett

Andrew Hallett is a member of the National Honor Society,

Envirothon, and the Science and Chemistry Olympiad teams. He received a Dean’s Scholarship and will attend the Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Science to major in pharmacy.

Envirothon team fi nishes big

Once again, the Chenango Forks Envirothon team maintained its stranglehold on Broome County by winning its 13th county championship in 14 years.

On April 30, at the Regional Envirothon Competition, Th e Murderous Mermots team of Cassi Burgin, Amber Bates, Shaun Sager, Alexandria Driscoll and Tyler Lawton placed ninth out of 16 county teams and 23rd out of 37 regional teams.

Th e Hedonistic Hellbender team of Courtney Robinson, Kacey Deamer, Alexis Lawton, Erin Elder and Christina Feldpausch placed fourth out of 16 county teams and sixth out of 37 regional teams. Th e Decomposers team of Sharon Hartzell, Ryan Pasternak, Pat Michalski, Nolan Rollo and James Haley III placed third out of 16 county teams and fi fth out of 37 regional teams.

Th e highlight of the competition was the Jackalopes team of Tiff any Evanchof, Matthew Kane, Andrew Hallett, Drew Kachmor and Alex Berkowitz winning Forks its 13th trip to the State Envirothon competition. Th ey placed fi rst out of 16 teams in Broome County and second out of 37 teams from Tompkins, Tioga, Schuyler, Chemung and Broome counties.

On May 27 and 28, the Jackalopes competed again at Kueka College against 56 other county-championship teams from New York, including giant downstate and Long Island schools as well as urban science magnet schools. Forks placed ninth out of 56 schools for a tenth top-ten fi nish state wide since 1996. Congratulations to all the teams that competed.

The Rotary Club of Nimmonsburg announced the selection of Elizabeth McGowan, Martin Beach, Alyssa Niman and Lauren Guth as participants in

Rotary District 7170’s 27th Annual Rotary Youth Leadership (RYLA) Conference held June 28 to July 3 at Hartwick College, Oneonta. Th e selections were based on a review of the candidate’s application and a personal interview with a selection committee of Nimmonsburg Rotarians. Chenango Forks High School students were among more than 100 high school juniors who lived, worked, studied and played together at the conference. Aimed at developing leadership potential in young people, the RYLA Conference featured speakers and workshops focusing on decision-making, ethics, critical thinking, communicating eff ectively, career development, public service, contemporary problems, and other challenging issues.

During the fi rst week of May,

Chenango Forks French and Spanish classes heard from speakers about their travels to other countries and the study experiences they learned while there.

Th is year, SUNY Cortland seniors Nicole LoCascio and Erin Grosso talked about their study-abroad experiences in Spain and Italy. Forks foreign language students who traveled to Costa Rica and France shared their impressions.

Last, Colleen Giblin, CF graduate and sophomore at Cornell University, talked about her travels to Brazil and her experience with rotary.

One Sunday afternoon last September, I stood at the grocery checkout, minding my own business, when I heard a friendly voice say, “Hi Lori!” I looked up

and recognized a Forks mom. We started chatting and during the course of our conversation she asked me if I would chair the 2009 After-Prom Party (APP).

Little did I know what APP stood for, let alone what it involved. She assured me that if I took the position she would stand by me and guide me through the process. On blind faith, I told her I would do it.

Today, ten months later, I can say this super energized, highly-motivated, top-notch-attention-to-detail-non-stop-wonder woman stood true to her words. She and numerous other dedicated women, and several good-natured men, stepped forward and volunteered their time and talents to give the junior and senior students a spectacular party.

Approximately 20 volunteers met monthly to plan the event. Nearly 40 volunteers attended the party to help facilitate, more than 100 businesses and private individuals donated money or prizes totaling nearly $15,000 to fund this event,

What a sensational way, on a hot May 19 budget-vote day, to refresh and aesthetically please the Chenango Forks community.

Abbey all displayed their students’ artwork in the high school cafeteria.

Whether it was a multi-media “Museum Night” video, or artist display boards needed as a requirement for the New York State Art Regents (the only one off ered in the state), all agreed our senses were enticed. Many art forms were on display, including sculpture, watercolors, paintings, ceramics, mosaics and glass etching.

In addition to the wonderful artwork, voters, students and families enjoyed free ice cream sponsored by the CF Teachers’ Association. It was a nice way for residents, students and staff to see what our students work on throughout the year and to get some ice cream to boot.

MS principal’s message

Our recent infl uenza issue carried us into uncharted waters with new challenges and little preceding experience to follow. In the end, it appears we

made it through the unwelcome experience and are now better prepared and more knowledgeable if such a situation ever happens again. All reports say our children have or are recovering. Th at, of course, is the most important factor, and we are extremely grateful. We are grateful to many.

We are grateful to the faculty and staff of the Middle School who reported to work in the face of the unknown and with trust that the administration was taking every possible precaution to ensure the health and safety of the Middle School community. Sure, some faculty and staff were most likely apprehensive, however, they all chose to be here because they understood the importance of their presence to the operation of our school. Th ey were here because the children needed them to be here.

We are grateful to the two staff members who were told they could not report to work, although they wanted to, and they returned as soon as they were allowed. To cover their positions and other spots we needed four diff erent substitutes. Four of our regular substitutes responded without hesitation. Th eir commitment is greatly appreciated.

We are grateful to our cleaners, maintenance personnel and cafeteria workers. Th ey were here every day. As they do every day, they picked up the dropped food, swept up the dirt, and ensured that the plumbing stayed in good order. Without them one can only imagine how diffi cult the situation could have been.

We are especially grateful to our attendance clerk and our building secretary. Th ose two answered innumerable phone

questions and maintained a ready attitude to assist any and all children, parents, and teachers with the myriad of inquiries that were constantly directed their way.

We thank the superintendent for his capable and confi dent handling of the situation. Th e forthright and eff ective communications to the press, the regular press conferences, including one on Saturday afternoon, along with the daily updates on the Internet, kept everyone informed and confi dent that all was being done to ensure the children’s safety.

Appreciation is also extended to the Broome County Department of Health. It was their knowledge that guided us through this uncharted territory. Without their recommendations and guidelines, hysteria and misinformation would have reigned and rained. We also thank our school doctor for his quick and accurate assessment of the situation.

Special thanks to the one who stood in the center of the storm. She is our school nurse, Pam Shapley. She saw every sick child and she answered what must have seemed like a thousand phone calls. She calmed the anxious and directed those with little understanding. She met with lines of parents and students. She showed up early and went home late. Her nursing and communication skills saved the day.

But of course, a very large extension of appreciation goes out to our parents and students. You supported us, you did what was asked, and you believed that we would do whatever we could to ensure your child’s safety. Our school went on, the year came to a successful conclusion, (our beautiful eighth-grade graduation was a testament to that), and we will be ready to start again in September. We have a beautiful school and a beautiful school community. Th ank you all.

HS principal’s message

That’s all folks. “In the fi eld of observation, chance favors only the prepared mind,” said Louis Pasteur, French scientist.

Th e above quote helps explain some extremely valuable lessons I was given the “chance” to observe over the last school year. As this is being written, I am completing my year as the substitute High School principal. Th is year has been an extraordinary opportunity to observe and be a part of an outstanding high school. I would like to share some of the observations I was fortunate enough to make over the last several months. Parents, community members, administrators, students

and staff all share the highest regard for education. I’ve seen this in the halls, on the fi elds, in the auditorium, in the pool, in the classrooms, on fi eld trips, at the mall, and throughout the entire community. Please continue to have a high regard for ALL students to be successful in the workplace and in life.

Our students do their best when they have support. Th ey seek support, off er support, work to maintain systems of support, and value the support others share with them. Please continue to off er your support to ALL students. Our High School is one of the most

important resources we have because our future is here. Please continue to be here with us. Please continue all of the wonderful and self-sacrifi cing acts you perform throughout the year for ALL students, for ALL of our futures.

So, it’s time. It’s time to say a heartfelt THANK YOU to everyone for helping me during the year and for welcoming me into the High School. It’s time to wish you all of the best and to sincerely let you know I will not be far away. My eyes, ears and heart will always be watching, listening and caring for ALL High School students and staff . Best wishes for a wonderful summer.

Inventions reap awards

Kenyon students put their creativity to good use in this year’s annual Invention Convention, with seven students

becoming semi-fi nalists.

Jacob Flynn, Samantha Small, Justin Goosley, Cathryn Lally, Brooke Maietta, Rebecca Vermilyea and Anthony Webb were invited to exhibit their invention models at a ceremony and exhibition held in May. Th is year, Justin Goosley won a medal for most creative presentation.

During the year-end Kenyon Recognition Ceremony, three fi fth-graders received special awards for their accomplishments during the school year.

Liam Walsh, who is in Jim Bender’s class, received the Offi ce of the State Comptroller Achievement Award. Th is award is given to a Kenyon student who shows academic excellence and the potential for leadership, through involvement in activities that improve the school and/or community.

Hunter Kermidas, Jim Bender’s class and Mackenzie Bronson, Jen Sanford’s class, both received the New York state Attorney General “Triple C” award. Th e Triple C Awards program was established to honor young people who have distinguished themselves within their school and community. Th e award recognizes the “character, courage and commitment” of New York’s hard-working students.

She has incredible speed, stick skills and dedication. While Amber was scoring goals, senior Kate Gillette was saving goals on the other end. Kate never settles and is always pushing herself to stop every shot. Her goal tending skills, positive attitude and willingness to take risks on the fi eld earned her 221 saves this past season and has been noted by other coaches as the best goalie in the area.

She was also a member of our school’s all-time record setting 6400m relay team, distance medley team, and our 3200m relay team, each of which was set this season. Michelle is on our school’s second fastest 400m relay and 1600m relay teams as well. Michelle is also our third best triple jumper in school history.

Giving “Locks of Love”

Chemistry teacher Alison Sheridan-Brennan decided it was time for a hair cut. With the help of CF senior Caitlin Sweeney, Brennan

got a new hair style and donated her locks to the American Cancer Society’s Locks of Love program. Caitlin, a student in Brennan’s chemistry lab and in the BOCES Cosmetology Program, did the cutting.

For many years Margaret Beaudoin walked between the Kenyon and the Middle School as one of our

shared teachers. Her appearances in both schools were always welcome and noteworthy. You could not help but take notice of her. Margaret brought with her an attitude of warmth and friendliness.

Both students and faculty enjoyed her personality and pleasant nature. Even more important was her eff ectiveness; she was good at what she did. In both schools she worked with students who were dealing with speech and hearing impediments. No one could have done it better. Students looked forward to

their time with her, and who wouldn’t? She had a smile longer than she was tall and the knowledge of the most educated in her fi eld. Similar to sunshine on a cloudy day, she brightened our days. We will miss her. We wish you the best of luck Margaret, and enjoy your well-deserved retirement.

Andy Gronski retires

Andy Gronski’s teaching career began in Deposit, however, he soon found himself teaching at Chenango Forks

Middle School in 1983. Th e following year he “graduated” to Chenango Forks High School were he spent the next 25 years teaching any and all math courses. During his tenure he excelled as a teacher and was the department chairperson for a number of years. In addition to working with students in math, he spent most of his career coaching cross country, indoor and outdoor track. His colleagues refer to him as “the most dedicated coach,” someone who “goes above and beyond the call of duty,” and “a really good person.” Andy looks forward to spending time with his family and his presence at Chenango Forks will be sorely missed.

Doug Hooper retires

Doug Hooper began his career at Chenango Forks after serving in the Army in Korea

and working as a police offi cer in New Hampshire. Bringing his vast and diverse experiences from these two experiences, he began working with students and legal issues and then ultimately became a member of the social studies department. During his time as a social studies teacher, he taught western civilization, American history, participation in government, economics, and nearly all the social studies elective course off erings. For the past fi ve years he has served as the department chairperson. Th e high school community will surely miss his sense of humor, his musical talents, and his dedication to the spirit of Millard Fillmore.

Barb Slocum, speech therapist at Harshaw Primary, is retiring after 40 years of service. Barb has been an active member of the Chenango Forks staff . In

addition to supporting the students and teachers at the primary level, she also helped the Upstagers for many years and participated in several faculty productions as well. She has been actively involved in the teacher’s association and in many diff erent committees over the years. Barb is also a

Student receives Libous award

Senior Austen Ferranti spent a Th ursday evening in May having dinner with a state senator. Th at’s because she is the recipient of the Senator Tom Libous Student Community Service Award. Th e $1,000 award

is given to one senior from each high school in the Senator’s 52nd District and is co-sponsored by Senator Tom Libous, Broome-Tioga BOCES and WBNG-TV.

Austen volunteers her time at the Trinity Episcopal Church Feeding Canteen, is a high school tutor, serves on the Chenango Forks School District Health Advisory committee, and is a member of the Honor Society and the girls varsity tennis team. She will attend SUNY Oneonta.

Austen said volunteering is something she enjoys doing, adding, “Often the smallest acts of kindness are the ones most appreciated.”

A number of third-, fourth- and fi fth-graders were feeling

rather low. Th at is limbo-low. In May, 54 students competed in the annual limbo contest at Kenyon.

After lowering the bar numerous times, it came down to one winner. Fourth-grader Maya Reynolds completed level nine, which is 11”off the ground, and was the winner of this year’s limbo contest. Congratulations to all the students who participated. Everyone had a great time.

Learning to make clouds

It was a rainy day in Chenango Forks. Clouds covered the sky. It was, however, a perfect day for studying the weather and learning how clouds are formed. Th at day in May, fourth-graders in Mrs. Roseanne Lapham’s class received a special

visit from tenth-grader Kaitlin Hulbert, a chemistry student in Alison Sheridan-Brennan’s class at the High School.

She came equipped with balloons, soda bottles and even vacuum chambers. She taught the class about air pressure, temperature, gases and cloud formation.

fun-fi lled science experiments. We learned a lot, thanks to Katie. Th ank you.

Enjoying a dip in the pool

In May and June, kindergarten students travelled to the high school pool for swimming lessons. Under the guidance and instruction of P.E. teacher Steve Busch, the

kindergarteners teamed up with a high school buddy to learn swimming strokes and gain confi dence in the water. It was a great time for both age groups. -Lisa Diamond, HP kindergarten

Play teaches reading is fun

Students in Lisa Diamond’s kindergarten class learned that reading is fun when they

performed their class play “Henrietta and the Bunny Pirates” in front of their Harshaw classmates in the morning and in front of family members the same evening.

Th e play is based on the book “Henry and the Buccaneer Bunnies,” written

by Carolyn Crimi and illustrated by John Manders, this year’s PARP illustrator.

Henrietta is an unusual pirate. She lives aboard the Salty Carrot with the other bunny pirates and her father, Barnacle Black Ear, who is the captain of the ship. She loves to read, much to her father’s dismay. A terrible storm destroys the ship and strands them on a deserted island. Henrietta saves them using survival techniques learned from the books she’s read. Soon, all the bunny pirates are reading and enjoying books, just like Henrietta. Th ey live happily ever after, reading away the days on their deserted island.

Hopefully, the students of Harshaw will wile away the summer hours visiting the public library and reading just as Henrietta and the Bunny Pirates did.

This year, a record number of well-produced entries off ered judges quite a challenge at the 2009 Rod Serling Film Festival held at the Binghamton High School Helen Foley Th eatre on Friday, June 5. At the ceremony,

prizes and certifi cates were presented along with a public viewing of the award-winning entries as part of the WSKG public television broadcast. Out of ten categories, the following Forks seniors received these honors:Jason Hamel: Best Editing, “Daylight.” Jesse Jones: Honorable Mention, “Montage.”Colin Wheeler: Honorable Mention, “Day n’ Night.”

Th e Rod Serling Video Festival premiered in 1995 as a county-wide festival for students in kindergarten through grade 12 to promote the use of video-arts technology and creativity in area schools. In the following year, the festival opened to students throughout New York. Now a much anticipated annual event, the festival receives entries from as far west as Buff alo to the eastern shores of Long Island.

Sharon Hartzell won third place in both the Alliance

for Science High School Essay Contest and the American Society of Human Genetics DNA Day Essay Contest.

In her A l l i ance fo r Science entry, she wrote a 1,000 word essay on the theme of “In Darwin’s Footsteps.” In her essay, she compared the achievements and dedication of a modern-era scientist with those of Charles Darwin.

In her DNA Day essay, Sharon explained the delicate balance between genes and the environment to convey an accurate understanding of the causes of human health and disease.

Sharon competed against high school students from the United States and other countries, including Canada, China, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Ghana. She won a monetary award for herself for both essays and prizes for her teacher, Joe Roosa.

Th e science department would like to congratulate Sharon on her outstanding achievements.

Student takes fi rst in art show

Congratulations to “An Artistic Discovery”

Congressional High School Art Competition winner Kiefer Collingwood. Kiefer, a senior, won fi rst place in the competition for his pen and ink drawing “Junkyard Truck.” He received his award from Congressman Michael Arcuri during a reception at the Munson-Williams-Proctor Institute School of Art Gallery in Utica.

In addition to a scholarship award, his artwork will be exhibited for the next year in the House-Senate tunnel at the U.S. Capitol in Washington D. C., along with other “An Artistic Discovery” winners from across the country.

Th e Broome County Arts Council sponsored the local round of the competition last month in Binghamton, where Kiefer’s “Junkyard Truck” was named “Best in Show” among entries from Chenango Forks, Chenango Valley, Harpursville and Whitney Point High Schools. Th ese Broome County schools are located in the 24th Congressional District.

Kiefer is the third Broome County student artist in the past four years to go on to win fi rst prize in Utica and the fi rst from Chenango Forks High School. Congratulations.

Congratulations to “Th e Cockroaches” on their victory

over “Da Crew” in the sixth-grade intramural kickball championships. What an amazing game. Da Crew took an early lead and then Th e Cockroaches fought back and never looked back.

Da Crew had a very good line-up, but the pitching was just too much for them. Outstanding plays in the fi eld by both teams kept the game tight, but it was Th e Cockroaches who had the last say. Congratulations to the Cockroaches.

Basketball championships

It was a game of tactics and planning. “Th e Gators” fi gured

that in order to win the game, they had to do everything right to beat the undefeated “Th underbolts.”

Th e Gators put together a very good game plan, playing smart and tough without committing many fouls. Add in some three-pointers and they came away with the win. A great game was played by both teams. Congratulations to Th e Gators.

Students found a great way to show how much they appreciate their moms and all that they do by

creating, from start to fi nish, a custom vase.

Seventh-grade artists in Jessica Russell’s class used team work, problem solving and creativity to create their own ceramic vase. Students learned about hand-building methods to transform a lump of clay into their own unique vase.

Th e fi nal step in making the vase was choosing and applying a colored glaze that would seal the vase while making it colorful and shiny. Th e students were ecstatic to bring their vase home for Mother’s Day.

Paper takes a life form

From a plain piece of paper to a puppet. Th at’s what seventh-grade students did during art class. Th e student artists

learned how to take fl at paper and fold, cut, glue and staple it to make a three-dimensional puppet.

As they worked on their puppets, the puppets slowly came to life. Th e creativity the students put into their puppet gave it originality as well as personality. In addition to making the puppets, the students worked in small groups to create skits using their puppets as characters they presented to the class. Th is project taught students how to create paper sculptures and work as a team.

Now that the school year has come to a close, we’d like to pause and recognize Chenango Forks students. Due to their eff orts, nearly all will be moving on

to the next grade level, some to a new school or building (is anything scarier than moving from Kenyon to the Middle School?), and our High School seniors will be moving on with their lives and careers outside the school halls they’ve grown to know so well. Th e PTA says congratulations for their accomplishments and best wishes as they pursue the next phase of their young and promising lives.

In particular, we’d like to recognize three graduating High School seniors whose accomplishments go beyond the classroom and extend into the heart and soul of our community. Th ese young ladies are the winners of the $500 PTA Scholarships, which recognize their commitment to volunteering to improve the lives of those around them. Th ey learned one of life’s great lessons: that service to others is not

optional, it is an integral part of what makes us human and what forms the basis for a rewarding and meaningful life.

We off er our congratulations to Alexis Lawton, Maria Urda and Megan Kresge.

We are pleased to announce the election of offi cers who will guide the PTA for the 2009-10 school year: Jim Wachter-president, Heather Lake-vice president, Th eresa Callahan-secretary and Christine Webb-treasurer. We thank them for their willingness and enthusiasm in leading the PTA next year.

At the same time, we say thank you and farewell to our outgoing PTA offi cers: Shari Sterling, president; Michele Ashman, vice president; Dawn Krisko, treasurer; and Barry Arnold, secretary. Each of these dedicated volunteers did an outstanding job in enriching the educational experience of all Chenango Forks students. We owe them a debt of gratitude for the time and talent they’ve devoted to this important work. See you next year.

Students make a diff erence

The Middle School Student Council worked hard this past school year to help those in need in the community. For the fi rst time, students raised

money toward autism research, as well as conducted other community service projects for the school district and the surrounding community.

Community- and school-service projects included the Christmas Basket Program, hosting Teacher/Staff Appreciation Day and organizing the school Snow Ball Dress-Up Dance.

To help raise money and awareness about autism, students conducted various fundraisers, including valentine lollipops, carnation and autism ribbon sales. Th e students made these ribbons in conjunction with the school district Oak Tree students who attend classes in kindergarten through eighth-

grade. We hoped to raise awareness as well as make money for our cause and it was a success. Th e students raised $525, whichwas donated for autism research. Middle School Student Council Advisor Patti Kamp will hold new elections in the fall. Visit the student council Web site to learn more. Jazz band plays at Mets game

On Sunday, June 7, members of the Chenango Forks Middle and High School jazz bands joined together to perform the National Anthem at the

start of the Binghamton Mets baseball game at NYSEG Stadium.

Students visited with players and the team mascot before the game. After their performance, they watched the game. Unfortunately the B-Mets lost to the Connecticut Defenders in the ninth-inning, but not before the students got to see several home runs, including a grand slam.
