And the winners are – The OFRA Residents! The Ontario Finnish Resthome Association and Founda-tion were once again overwhelmed and touched with the amount of support from the community for both the Harvest Fest Draw and Event held on September 7, 2018. This year OFRA and the Foundation increased its prize package again. We had almost 140 businesses, staff members and volunteers working endlessly, volun-teering their time to help us sell our Harvest Fest Draw tickets. Ticket sales brought in a net total of over $35,000! An additional $2,900 was raised from our 50/50 and Penny Raffle at the event. All of the money raised through our lottery efforts will be used to pur-chase a new wheelchair accessible bus for use by all the residents of OFRA.

Voittajia ovat - OFRAN asukkaat! OFRA ja säätiö oli jälleen kerran iloisesti yllättynyt yhteisömme tuesta tämän vuotista Harvest Festiä kohtaan. Tänä vuonna juhla järjestettiin syyskuun 7pvä. Lisäsimme taas myös palkintojen määrää. Noin 140 yritystä , henkilökuntamme sekä vapaaehtoiset työskentelivät loputtomasti myydessään sekä pääsy- että arpalippuja tapah-tumaan. Lipunmyynnin tuotto oli yli $35.000! Sen lisäksi saimme kokoon vielä $2.900 , 50/50 ja arpalippujen myynnistä. Arpajaislippumyynnin voitto käytetään uuden inva-bussin hankintaa, joka tulee OFRAN asukkaiden käyttöön.

The 3rd Annual Harvest Fest Event was just as successful! The money raised through this year’s event will go to-wards our New Long-Term Care Redevelopment Project capital campaign to meet the growing needs of our resi-dents and the community. We would like to thank our generous sponsors. Our Gold Sponsors consisted of Lei-sure Living and SalDan General Contractors Ltd. Our Silver Sponsors were Northern Superior Brewing Co. and Sault Chiropody Clinic and our Bronze Sponsor was SK Group Inc. This year’s event was held at a new venue, The Ma-chine Shop, and it was a hit, serving up more space and amazing food!! We brought back the ever-entertaining dynamic duo of Vernon Bailey and Vanha Vhite – many were in tears from laughter! The night was capped off with the musical tal-ents of HWY 638! The event itself brought in over $30,700, which in-cluded sponsor-ship, dinner tickets, live and silent auc-tions, the market-place and in-kind

donations. The donation of all our priz-es, goods and services as well as the marketplace items were phenomenal. The final overall net total of all cash and in-kind donations and the draws were valued at over $65,000. The Ontario Finnish Resthome Associa-tion and Foundation would like to thank the generous residents and businesses of Sault Ste. Marie and area for your

ongoing support. Every day you donate prizes, you pur-chase tickets and you continue to make numerous dona-tions that help to maintain the highest level of care for our residents. Again, thank you from the Homes with a Heart!

Sault Ste. Marie Airport Devel-opment Corporation (SSMADC)

Annual Golf Tournament On Friday August 17 2018 the SSMADC hosted their Annual Golf Tournament. The pro-ceeds of this event were distributed to Community Living Algoma, Hope Air and the Ontario Finnish Resthome Asso-ciation. Of the event proceeds, OFRA received $2,440, which OFRA used towards the construction of the Court-yard Redevelopment Project. OFRA also hosted the Airline Ticket Draw during the event. Purchasers had a chance to win 2 Prizes:

Elokuun 17 ,2018 SSMADC järjesti vuosittaisen golftur-nauksensa. Turnauksen tuotot jaettiin Community Living Algomalle, Hope Airlle ja OFRAlle. New Medical Equipment for MKK and Kotitalo from the Dr. Lou and Mae Lukenda Charitable Foundation On Oct 2 2018, the Foundation was successful in re-ceiving another grant valued at $2,000 from the Dr. Lou and Mae Lukenda Charitable Foundation for the purchase of critical equipment that we use to ensure consistent and ongoing monitoring of the health and welfare of residents for both Kotitalo and MKK.

New Oven for the Dietary Department from F.K. Morrow Foundation On August 23 2018, the Foundation was successful in our efforts for funding to purchase a new baking oven for the dietary department. This new oven is a crucial piece of equipment in our kitchen and will be used daily, from 6am to 6pm, 365 days a year, to bake all the goodies for the 175 residents of Kotitalo and Mauno Kaihla Koti. Did you know that OFRA is the only nursing home and assistive living home in Sault Ste. Marie with an on-site baker? That is because we believe that part of making our organization a “home” for our residents is to make fresh handmade, traditional baked goods that reflect the culture of our residents. We would like to thank the F. K. Morrow Foundation for its generous donation of $4,000 to cover the cost of this purchase.

Uusi uuni on välttämätön keittiömme toimin-nalle ja on käytössä päivittäin aamu kuudesta ilta kuuteen, 365 päivänä vuodesta, leipoessamme leivon-naisia 175 asukkaamme tarpeisiin Kotitalolla ja Mauno Kaihla Kodilla. Tiesitkö, että OFRA on ainoa vanhain-koti/palvelutalo Soo'ssa, jolla on oma leipomo! Meille on tärkeää , että voimme itse valmistaa leivonnaisia perinteisellä tavalla. Our 6th Annual 50/50 cash lottery draw is back

Back by popular demand, the Foundation is hosting our 6th annual bi-weekly 50/50 cash lottery draw! Tickets are only $5 each or $75 for all 15 draws! There are a total of 15 draws and the first draw was held on Wednesday October 10th 2018. The draws continue every other Wednesday thereafter until April 24th 2019. Last year’s winners were receiving prizes valued at over $300! All the funds raised for this draw will help go towards the purchase of a new wheelchair accessible bus for the residents of OFRA!! The Foundation is on the Move!! In November the Foundation will have a new home! We will be moving from our current location at 721 North St., Suomi Eesti Maja, to the previous Wellness Room adjacent the Ko-titalo Lobby. This new location will house the offices of the Fund Development Coordinator, Margaret Gardner and our Fundraising Intern, as well as the Purchasing and Marketing Agent, Heidi Schell. All Foundation and Fundraising activities will be run from this location.

Säätiö muuttaa! Marraskuussa Säätiöllä on uusi koti! Muutamme uusiin tiloihin, joka on Kotitalon Lobbyn yhteydessä oleva entinen Wellness Room. Näissä uusissa tiloissa tulee olemaan Fund Develope-ment Coordinator, Margaret Gardner ja Fundrais-ing Intern, sekä Purchasing and Marketing Agent, Heidi Schell. Kaikki Säätiön ja varainkeräys asiat tullaan hoitamaan tässä uudessa tilassa.

News from the CEO’s Desk:

Summer has come and gone, and what a beautiful summer it was! I hope everyone had a great season enjoying everything summer has to offer! Now, as the temperatures begin the cool and the leaves begin the change, it is time to update you on what has been hap-pening at OFRA. In the last issue, I went into some detail about OFRA’s expansion plans which include the building of a New MKK, a 128-bed nursing home. I won’t repeat the details of that infor-mation here, but I did want to update Around The Pond’s readership on what has tran-spired since that newsletter. In the intervening time, Ontario went through another pro-vincial election, resulting in a majority Conservative government to replace Kathleen

Wynne’s Liberals. During elections, all government decision making, regardless of the type, halts as the various Min-istries and associated crown corporations go into what is known by most as “caretaker” mode. When the Conserva-tives won, that meant that a great deal of the initiatives underway by the former government were put on hold in order for the new government to organize. In order to ensure that OFRA’s application to rebuild and grow MKK remains top of mind in the new government, I organized a meeting between myself, the OFRA Board Chair Todd Slotegraaf, and the OFRF Board Chair Tarja Loewen and MPP Ross Romano. In that meeting, it was expressed to Mr. Romano that proceeding to a favourable Develop-ment Agreement to build a new Nursing Home as soon as possible was critical. Since the 64 additional beds were approved through the Aging with Confidence application, MOHLTC indicated that the review process may need to start over given the significant increase in beds. It is important to note that the review process for our original rede-velopment application for 64 beds began in 2015, and was not yet complete at the time the added 64 beds were ap-proved. In order to ensure that the beds are in operation by the Ministry-imposed December 31, 2022 deadline, and given the time required for the project, OFRA must begin construction very soon. The Foundation held a very successful 3rd Annual Harvest Fest, which not only raised much needed funds for the or-ganization, but also helped to raise awareness of the critical need that OFRA fills in our community: providing afford-able housing and care options for area seniors. My heartfelt thanks and congratulations to the Foundation leader-ship, volunteers and staff who teamed up to made this such a successful event once again this year. I am personally already looking forward to the 4th annual Harvest Fest! It was certainly a busy summer in terms of facility improvements! Anyone who has visited the OFRA grounds recently will have noticed a big change in the Kotitalo/MKK Courtyard. Completed in the last week, the courtyard now boasts a brand new deck, gazebo and fencing, and they look simply amazing! At the same time as the construction of the new courtyard was happening, inside Kotitalo workers have been busy installing a fire-suppression sprinkler system per the new Fire Code. We expect that project to have wrapped up by the winter. Finally, much-needed improve-ments are being made to the Kestitupa Kitchen in SEM, where a new stove/oven and overhead exhaust system are being installed. My thanks to the Board, Management, Staff, and Volunteers that work together to make OFRA the wonderful place it is. Everyone, regardless of the role they play, contributes to our overarching goal of providing quality housing and care options to the seniors that call OFRA home. They are a truly remarkable and singular group of dedicated people, and they make all the difference! Paul Belair Chief Executive Officer

Uutisia Pääjohtajalta: Kesä on mennyt ja mikä upea kesä meillä olikin! Toivottavasti lukijoillamme oli mahdollisuus nauttia kaikesta , mitä kesä tarjosi. Sään viiletessä ja värien vaihtuessa luonnossa, on aika taas päivittää lukijoitamme OFRAN tapahtumista. Viime numerossa informoin lukijoitamme OFRAN laajennussuunnitelmista, uuden MKK rakentamisesta ja sen 128 vuodepaikasta. En toista asiaan liittyviä yksityiskohtia tässä, mutta informoin siihen liittyvästä viimeaikaisesta kehityksestä. Sitten viime päivitykseni Ontariossa on ollut provinssin sisäiset vaalit ja konservatiivihallitus sai vallan liberaaleilta ja Katheleen Wynne'ltä. Vaalikauden aikana kaikki hallituksen sisäinen työskentely hidastuu uuden hallituksen siirtyessä virkaan. Konservatiivien voitettua kaikki aikasemman hallituksen tekemät päätökset laitettiin odottamaan uuden hal-lituksen organisointia. Varmistaaksemme, että hankkeemme uuden MKK suhteen pysyy uuden hallituksen prioriteettina, järjestin kokouksen johon kutsuin OFRAN lautakunnan puheenjohtajan Todd Slotegraaf 'in, OFRF lautakunnan puheenjohtajan Tarja Loe-wen'in sekä MPP Ross Romanon. Kokouksessa informoimme Romanoa uuden rakennuksen nopean valmistumisen tärkeydestä. Tällä hetkellä, 64 vuodepaikan hyväksynnän myötä , MOHLTC antoi ymmärtää , että arviointiprosessi pitää mahdollisesti aloittaa uudelleen vuodepaikkojen lisäyksen vuoksi. Tässä on tärkeää huomauttaa , että alkuperäinen arviointiprosessi alkoi 2015 ja silloin vuodepaikkojen määrä alkuperäisessä anomuksesta oli 64, eikä anomusta ollut vielä loppuun käsitelty, kun uudet 64 paikkaa oli jo hyväksytty. Jotta voimme varmistaa, että vuodepaikat ovat valmiita ja toiminnassa joulukuun 31.2022 mennessä , joka on Minis-teriön määräämä takaraja projektin valmistumiselle, OFRAN täytyy aloittaa rakentaminen mahdollisimman pian. Säätiö järjesti kolmannen menesyksekkään Harvest Festin joka tuotti paljon tarvittavia varoja organisaatiollem-me, sekä nosti esiin profiiliamme positiivisella tavalla. Samalla tilaisuus toi yhteisöömme tietoisuutta tärkeistä palve-luista joita tarjoamme senioreillemme. Sydämelliset kiitokset säätiön johtokunnalle, vapaaehtoisille sekä työntekijöil-lemme, jotka saivat aikaan onnistuneen tapahtuman taas tänäkin vuonna. Henkilökohtaisesti odotan jo neljättä Har-vest Festiä! Kesä oli kiireinen monenlaisten kun-nostusprojektin taholta. Kaikki jotka ovat vierailleet OFRAlla ovat varmasti huomanneet positiiviset moderniso-inti muutokset sisäpihalla. Uusi teras-si , pergola ja aita näyttävät todella hienolta! Myös sisätiloissa on tapah-tunut muutoksia ja uuden paloturval-lisuus järjestelmän asennus on melkein saatu päätökseen. Kestitu-van keittiöön Suomi Eesti Majalla on myös asennettuuusi tehokas ilman-poistojärjestelmä sekä liesi. Kiitos lautakunnalle, johtajille, henkilökunnalle sekä vapaaehtoisille joiden ansiosta OFRA on ainutlaatuinen asuinpaik-ka. Jokainen, heidän asemastaan riippumatta, vaikuttaa omalla panoksellaan siihen , että OFRA on laadukas koti kaikille senioreillemme. Henkilökuntamme on erinomainen työlleen omistautunut joukko! News from the Ladies Auxiliary

Fall is here and the leaves are changing colours quickly ... what a colourful time of year and a new season for Ladies Auxiliary as well. In spite of the Rummage Store and Fashion Shop being closed for the month of July, we are pleased to report that sales for the summer months was approximately $6,700. This is amazing and wonderful for the Ladies Auxiliary. What a great team of ladies. Our Annual Casserole Dinner of September 26th, was a huge success. Many thanks to those who donated numer-ous and delicious casseroles and all who attended. Our new oven that the Ladies Auxiliary purchased was used to bake the meatballs for the dinner. What a joy to have a new oven which is a long overdue addition to the kitchen. Ladies Auxiliary will be celebrating its 45th Anniversary at our Annual Meeting on Tuesday, October 9th with cake and coffee. In 45 years, we have had our Annual Tea and Bazaars; tens of thousands of loaves of pulla have been made; many dinners prepared and the list goes on. Let us not forget our two stores where you can find almost any-thing including homemade crafts.

Plans are on the way for our Annual Christmas Tea and Bazaar scheduled for Saturday, November 10th from 1 - 2:30 p.m. at Suomi Eesti Maja. Tickets are $5.00 and can be purchased from Ladies Auxiliary members or the Foundation office. Please plan to attend. In closing, we welcome you to come attend our coffee hours, Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays and check out our stores on Wednesdays. Enjoy the fall colours!

Naisjaoston kuulumisia

Syksy on saapunut ja puissa vaihtuu väri nopeasti....värikäs vuodenaika ja uusi kausi Naisjao-stolle. Olemme iloisia voidessamme ilmoittaa hyvästä tuloksesta kesäkuukausien ajalta, n. $6.700! kauppojemme kiinniolosta huolimatta heinäkuun ajan. Tämä on todella hyvä tu-los Naisjaostolle. Hieno tiimi naisia! Vuosittainen Casserole Dinner oli jälleen hyvin onnistunut. Tänä vuonna järjestimme sen syyskuun 26 pvä. Kiitos kaikille jotka lahjoittivat ruokia sekä nille jotka osallistuivat. Oli ilo saada käyttää uutta uunia lihapullien valm-istukseen. Ehdimmekin jo odottaa sitä kovasti. Naisjaosto juhlii 45-vuotisjuhliaan kakun ja kahvin kera, tiistaina, lokakuun 9pvä, 2018. Näiden 45 vuoden aikana olemme jär-jestäneet Jokavuotisen Tea & Bazaar, leiponeet kymmeniä tuhansia pullapitkoja, valmistaneet monia illallisia ja erilaisia tapahtumia. Huolehdimme myös kahdesta kaupasta, joissa voit hankkia käsitöitä joita valmistamme.

Farmers' Almanac'in mukaan Canadalaisilla on odotettavissa normaalia kylmempi talvi! Pakkasluke-mat tulevat olemaan normaalia kylmemmät suurim-massa osassa maata, mm. Albertassa, Saskatche-wan'issa, Manitoba'ssa ja luoteis Ontariossa. Helmikuu 2019 tulee olemaan kylmin kuukausi pak-kasen olessa mahdollisesti jopa n. -40c ja -45c välillä." Odotamme siis tulevasta talvesta hyvin, hyvin kyl-mää", toteaa almanakan toimittaja Peter Geiger CTV uutisille.

Uusi Koti residents had an opportunity to have a group of Japanese Cultural Exchange students visit them from Algoma University on Sept. 5th! They were able to learn the Japanese Language, the Japanese art of paper folding and traditional games, and get to know international students, ask questions, and have fun!! Thank you to Ash-ley Shantz from AU for her assistance with organ-izing this for Uusi Koti!

The Italian Festival was held on Tues-day, August 14th at Kotitalo and we had a huge turnout as always!! Thank you to all who came out and to those who donated baked goods, pizza, meat and cheeses – they were all grate-fully appreciated! Thank you as well to Phillip Braido and his gang for coming out to perform!

Uuden Kodin asukkailla oli vierainaan syyskuun 5pvä joukko Japanilaisia vaihtooppilaita Algoma Univer-sityltä. Asukkailla oli tilaissu oppia japanin kieltä, tu-tustua japanilaiseen paperitaiteeseen, pelata pelejä, esittää kysymyksiä sekä pitää hauskaa vierailijoiden kanssa. Kiitos Ashley Shantzille tästä tilaisuudesta ja sen järjestämisestä.

Also on Sept. 5th we had the privilege of having mem-bers of Team Jacobs come up and curl with our resi-dents! Last year in August, we had put out a Face-book challenge to them and they finally came!

The Kotitalo dining room was packed full of on-lookers and participants for the competition! Team Jacobs ended up winning with a final score of 9-5, but in the grand scheme of things, I would say that is pretty good!

Thank you again to them for taking the time to visit with us – our residents and staff cannot express their appreciation enough!!

Syyskuun 5pvä olimme etuoikeutteuja saades-samme Team Jacobsin vieraaksemme. Asukkail-lamme oli tilaisuus pelata heidän kanssaan, Vii-mevuoden elokuussa haastoimme heidät peliin Facebookissa ja he vastasivat vi-hdoin haasteessemme. Kotitalon ruokasali oli täynnä pelaajia ja yleisöä! Team Jacobs voitti pelin 9-5, mielestäni tulos oli meidän osaltamme kaikenkaikkiaan hyvä. Kiitos Team Jacobille heidän vierailustaan, emme voi kiittää heitä tarpeeksi!

Residents from MKK, Kotitalo, SEM, and Uusi Koti put on their annual “Alzheimer Society Coffee Break” week events, Sept 17th – 23rd ! Between all of the coffee times in all 4 buildings, staff dress down day, the bake sale, the dietary department donating their snack money proceeds, etc., etc., OFRA raised just over $2,310 for “Coffee Break”– hopefully that will be enough to again win the “Golden Coffee Cup” Award! We care for and help those with Alzheimer’s and de-mentia, so thank you to EVERYONE for their support and vol-unteerism for such a great cause!! We made our “coffee count” for the Alzheimer Society!! Great job everyone!

Jokavuotinen "Alzheimer Society Coffee Break" oli jälleen Syyskuussa , 19-23 pvä. Tuot-tomme tänä vuonna oli $2,310. Toivottavasti sillä voitamme jälleen "Kultaisen kahvikupin". Asuk-

kaat kaikissa rakennuksissamme järjestivät kahvitilaisuuksia viikon ajan ja myymällä leivon-naisia sekä erinäisillä tempauksilla saimme edellä mainitun summan kokoon. Huolehdimme

asukkaistamme jotka sairastavat dementiaa ja Alzheimerin- tautia joten tämä on meille hyvin tärkeä aihe. Kiitos kaikille vapaaehtoisille jotka osallistuitte tapahtumaamme!

Forms can be picked up from the MKK or KOT TR / Activity staff, at the MKK/KOT front desk, or from myself – my office is beside the KOT Chapel. Individuals 18 and over must provide a negative police check prior to an interview – forms to complete this are with the volunteer packet! “VOLUNTEERS ARE PRICE-LESS!”

MKK Adopt-a- Resident jouluksi , tempaus on suun-nitteilla tällekkin vuodelle ( henkilökunnalle lista on saatavilla marraskuun alussa) , että tempauksesta tuli-si onnistunut tarvitsemme kaikkien osallistumista

" Tea & Bazaar'iin", jonka tuotolla tuemme Adopt -a-Resident tempausta. Päivämäärästä ilmoitamme mah-dollisimman pian, odotamme paloturvallisuusjärjest-elmän valmistumista. Pääsylippu on $5.00. Otamme Vastaan lahjoituksia myytäväksi, mm. Joulukoristeita, leivonnaisia, käsitöitä. Jos haluat tehdä lahjoituksen ota yhteyttä TR/ Activity henkilökuntaan tai minu-un.

Jos sinä tai joku omaisistasi on kiinnostunut vapaaehtoistyöstä ota meihin yhteyttä, vastaanotamme hakemuksia. Kaavakkeita saat MKK , KOT TR/ Activity henkilökunnalta, sekä KOT /MKK vastaanotosta ja minulta. The MKK “Adopt-a-Resident” for Christmas program will be happening again this year (lists for staff will be out in early November), but in or-der for it to be a success, we need everyone to plan to come to the MKK TR/Activity “Tea & Ba-zaar”! Date will be announced soon as we wait for the Kotitalo fire sprinkler system installation to be completed. Admission will be $5. We are looking for donations to sell at the event – baked goods, knitted items, Christmas crafts, etc. – so if you can donate, please contact myself or any of the TR/Activity girls.

Entomica came for another visit to see the MKK and KOT residents, but this time it was to complete a craft project – butterfly framing! And what beautiful, colour-ful butterflies they brought! Thank you to Michael Odom and John Dedes for helping with the organizing of this event, and for supplying us with all the material! Our res-idents now have a precious memory they can keep for-ever.

Entomica oli jälleen vierailulla MKK ja Kotitalolla.Tällä kertaa askartelemassa kanssamme, Aiheena oli perhosen kehystäminen. He toivat mukanaan todella kauniita per-hosia. Greetings From Our Newest “Homes with a Heart” – Uusi Koti

There’s always something going on at Uusi Koti! Every morn-ing tenants may gather at 10am with their own brew in the “gathering room”. There are always friendly welcoming smiles, conversation, a few chuckles and useful information. Most evenings of the week and some afternoons, there are card games to participate in. Friday afternoon Bingo is very popular. We have quite a creative group in our well-equipped Craft room. They produce some treasures and en-joy the camaraderie! The Carpenter room is also well equipped and well used! Many tenants displayed their “green thumb” this season with flourishing gardens - both vegetables and lovely blooms. I know there were many delicious salads and greens from the garden. My great grandson planted with his grandma and great grandma – warm spring memories. Alice Pitt -Uusi Koti Tenant

Tervehdys Uudelta Kodilta Uudella Kodilla on jatkuvasti aktiviteetteja joihin on mahdollisuus osallistua. Aamuisin kymmeneltä asuk-kaat kokoontuvat kahveineen kokoontumistilas-samme. Siellä vaihdamme viimeisiä kuulumisia ja hyödyllistä informaatiota seurustelun lomassa. Kaikki ovat tervettulleita. Useampana iltana viikossa ,sekä iltapäivisin, on mah-dollisuus osallistua korttipeleihin. Perjantain Bingo on hyvin suosittu. Käsityötiloissa toimii luova käsityöpiiri. He harrastavat kädentaitoja hyvässä seurassa. Puu-verstas on myös erinomaisesti varustettu ja hyvässä käytössä. Monet asukkaista käyttivät " vihreää peukaloaan" puutarhatöissä menneenä kesänä. Kasvamaan tuotto oli antoisa. Oma pikku sukulaispoikani avusti kasvimaalla mummojaan - lämpimiä kevät muistoja. Alice Pitt- Uuden Kosinski asukas
