The District 8 CDM Contests are planned for Saturday, March 3 in Waco. There are (3) divisions (junior, intermediate and senior) and up-to three teams in each division may go representing Johnson County.

If your club has a team that you would like to sign-up or if you would like to learn more about Consumer Decision Making contact Tarren Oswald no later than February 3.

Hey everyone! The Fashion Storyboard con-test is just around the corner! The design brief this year is “ Around the World” - Use your fashion passport to explore people, places, culture and fashion around the world. Use what you learn about other parts of the globe to in-spire your creation. Have fun picking out your fabric and paper!!! It’s a great time to start getting creative and thinking of ideas for your wearable, accessory, non-wearable, or pet clothing design.

For 2011-2012 the theme is “Trains.” This theme allows 4-H members to take photos of all types of trains. The train theme includes both real and model trains. Photo subject must be either the engine or a train car. Photos of train accessories such as stations/depots, signs, tracks, etc are not allowed. All necessary safety pre-cautions and laws must be adhered to during photo capturing.

Hey Senior-level 4-H’ers! the State 4-H Photography Contest is just around the corner!

One Best of Show Award will be presented to one photo in each divi-sion. Best of Show winners will be framed and displayed at the Texas 4-H State Headquarters office for a year, then returned to the winners after next year’s contest.

Also, each Best of Show winner will receive a $200.00 cash prize!

  Check it out! The brand new Deep In The Heart Movie hits Cinemark Thea-tres February 17th. Mr. Richard Wall-rath is a huge supporter of both the 4-H and FFA programs in Texas. This is a way that the 4-H Program can return the favor and support this movie! Make plans to fill the theatres opening weekend!

The Johnson County 4-H Hippology Team, coached by Ed Bader, traveled to Denver, Colorado to the National Western Stock Show to compete in the annual Western National Roundup Hippology Contest. The contest was held in Fort Collins, Colorado where it was hosted by Colorado State University. Ten states competed in this year’s contest.

The Johnson County team representing Texas walked away with 1st place team honors in the “horse judging” division. As individuals, Darylann Reed took the honor of 1st place, TyloBader, 4th and Brianna Hogg, 6th.

In the “exams” division, the team placed 8th, with Brianna placing 10th as an individual. In the “stations” division, the team placed 4th, Tylo was 9th high individual.

Overall the team placed 6th out of 10 and Brianna was the 10th high individual.

Congratulations to Coach Bader and the team for a job well done!!!

Coach Ed Bader reported that there were 22 teams in the senior division at the January 14 statewide con-test, and competition was very tough in all age divi-sions. Teams came from all over the state. In the Senior Division, the team of Tylo Bader , Brianna Hogg, Darylann Reed and Matthew Reed placed 7th overall. The second Johnson County team, comprised of Felicia Crawford, Trevor Reed, Tarryn Howey and Lorenzo Serrano placed 15th. Taylor McClure also competed on a team with Williamson County 4-H members which placed 10th overall. The intermediate team of Kendra Serrano, Bailey McDaniel, Lana Lentschke and Linah Howey domi-nated the competition, placing 1st out of 15 teams. Kendra placed 2nd as an individual, Bailey, 6th, Lana, 8th and Linah, 10th out of 52 competitors. Also, in the Intermediate Division, Corey Gourley and Geor-gia Stewart competed on a team with 2 other 4-Her’s from Denton County which placed 5th overall.

In the Junior division, Calista Serrano & Isobel Simpson participated on the 8th place Junior team with 2 other 4-H’ers from Collin County. Calista placed 9th overall out of 37 individuals.

The Johnson County Horse Judging Teams would like to thank everyone who helped by furnishing horses, and special thanks to sponsors.

Holley Strevey of Grand-view 4-H and her horse, “Outrageous Sensation”, com-peted at the Ft. Worth Stock Show Paint Horse competition on January 14, where they had several 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 6th place winnings in vari-ous classes.

Holley was also deemed the “all-around high point youth” in “Novice Youth Showmanship”, winning a beautiful belt buckle.

   Ellis County 4-H will be hosting their 3rd Archery tournament on Saturday, March 3, 2012 begin-ning at 8am at the Ellis County Youth Expo Center.

This tournament is open to any 4-H member, regardless of experi-ence, between ages 8-18.

The Texas 4-H Shooting Sports Program announces the 2012 Indoor Archery Match to be held March 8-10 in Bay City and March 16-17 in Graham and . 4-H’ers may compete in either match--but not both.

Feb. 11-12 - Diamond W Arena, Alvarado

The APHA Novice Youth / Novice Amateur Extravaganza will be held in Alvarado February 11-12. This is a joint effort between the Texas State Coordinating Commit-tee of the APHA and local open show committees. 

It will be an APHA approved Nov-ice Youth and Novice Amateur Show PLUS an APHA PAC ap-p roved Op en A l l B ree d Show…..and if that’s not enough, there will be a clinic on Saturday conducted by professional trainers covering showmanship, horse-manship, equitation and trail.

4-H families are eligible for exemption from sales tax on the purchase of animal feed, supplies etc. House Bill 268, passed during the 82nd Regular Legislative Session, requires, beginning Jan. 1, 2012, that a person claiming an exemption from sales tax on the purchase of certain items used in the production of agricultural and timber products must provide a registration number issued by the Comptroller of Public Accounts on the exemption certificate issued to the seller. Congratulations to the D8 4-H members that participated this past Sunday in the District Dairy Judging Contest held in con-junction with the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo Dairy Judg-ing Contest! The Johnson County teams, coached by Larry Woolley, dominated the contest! The senior teams took 1st and 2nd respectively, Members included:

1st Place Team : Brayden Hawkins, who was high point individual; Paige Pollock (3rd high pt.); Maddison Holder (5th high pt.) and Shelby Estep.

2nd Place Team: Karen Zijlstra (2nd high pt.); Garrett Michael (4th high pt.); Jennifer Murphy and Donna Dezendorf.

The junior teams also won 1st and 2nd places. Members in-cluded:

1st Place Team: Leanne Pollock, high point individual; Thomas Harrington (4th high pt.) and Tucker Tilton.

2nd Place Team: Travis Tilton (2nd high pt.); Brigg Hawkins (3rd high pt.) and Saleton Morgan.

The results from the Ft. Worth Stock Show are beginning to come in and Johnson County 4-Her’s have started this show season off right! In the Dairy division, Jennifer Murphy placed 2nd with her Brown Swiss; J.W. Mathis, 3rd-Holstein; Donna Dezendorf, 5th-Jersey and Ethan Campbell, 7th-Holstein. In the Heifer division, Zena Goodwin placed 2nd with her Simmental; Emily Moore, 2nd-Charolais; Sarah Sharp, 4th-Santa Gertrudis; Chloe Bennett, 4th-Shorthorn; Darylann Reed, 6th-Beefmaster; Colton Thomas, 6th-Limousin; Kevin Thomas, 6th-Limousin and Bradley Pate, 7th-Limousin. In the Breeding Sheep division, Zena Goodwin won Reserve Champion and 1st in her class with her Hamp Ram; 2nd-Southdown; 2nd-Breeding Pair and 4th & 5th-Hamp Ewes. In the Breeding Swine division, Haley Estep won 1st place and Champion Duroc and overall Reserve Champion boar; Lindsay Tenery won 3rd-Berkshire; 1st place and Champion York and exhibited the overall Supreme Champion Gilt! Also in the swine division, Lindsey Jones had a 3rd place Duroc and 5th place York and Ellie Carroll, 5th place-Landrace. Congratulations to the exhibitors and their livestock projects!
