Girl Scouts Louisiana East2020 Resident Camp
Our CampsCamp Marydale
Camp Marydale is a picturesque 400-acre
camp site, located 45 miles north of Baton
Rouge, near the rolling hills of St. Francisville.
Amenities include horseback riding, a low ropes
challenge course, hiking trails, archery, swimming
pool, and canoeing. Campers sleep in cabins or
dormitory style buildings. There is also a multi-purpose building/dining hall, a large activity center
and craft hut, and infirmary, all located near a pristine lake.
Camp Marydale is home to a 25+ herd of horses that are housed in a large barn and enjoy open
pastures, two riding arenas, and two riding trails that wind throughout the property. Girl Scouts are
taught horsemanship skills by our Wranglers, who are older girls who volunteer at Marydale on the
weekend. Six residential units provide hot and cold showers.
Camp Whispering PinesNestled in a unique longleaf pine forest, Camp
Whispering Pines is a 600-acre camp located in
Independence, north of Hammond. Unofficially
referred to as our water camp, Camp Whispering Pines’
water activities include canoeing and kayaking, and
enjoying the camp’s large water slide located in Timber
Lake (slide: April 1-Oct. 1). Girl Scouts may also enjoy swimming in the camp’s new Trefoil-shaped
pool with ADA-lift. Other amenities include archery, hiking the camp’s many nature trails, climbing
the rock wall, and challenging themselves on the high ropes course with a zip line.
Camp CovingtonLocated along the Bogue Falaya River about seven miles northwest of Covington, Camp
Covington is one of the oldest Girl Scout camps in the United States. This quaint 23-acre
camp includes sunny open spaces for day use and shaded camping grounds for cabins
and platform tents, making it ideal for the first-time camper. Each area, whether for day use or
overnight camping, provides a fire circle and grill
with a nearby latrine. Campers may also utilize the
camp’s dining hall and kitchen, archery course,
and hiking trail. Stairs provide easy access to
the shallow river, where girls enjoy wading and
exploring the riverbed.

FAQ’sWhere will my daughter sleep while she is at camp?—Campers sleep in a variety of units that depend on grade level and session. The types of units that are available are listed on page 5.
Will a counselor be in the same room as my daughter at night?—Counselors sleep in a seperate room or cabin that is centrally located to all campers.
What time is check-in and check-out?—Check-in is at 3 p.m. on Sunday unless otherwise stated for the session, and check-out is at 3 p.m. on Friday unless otherwise stated for the session.
What will my daughter eat at camp?—Our cooks create a well balanced menu to meet the needs of an active camp schedule. Campers are served 3 hot meals each full day at camp and have the option of a breakfast bar with various items in the morning and a full salad bar at lunch. Girls take a “Girl Scout Bite” of everything offered (unless there is an allergy) before they can get something from the bar.
What if my girl is hungry in between meals?—If a girl is hungry in between meals, she will be offered a piece of fresh fruit (apple, orange or banana).
What if my daughter has a food allergy?—Our cooks can accommodate most food allergies, however, you are welcome to provide supplemental foods to meet your girl’s needs.
Can my camper call me while at camp?—We do not allow girls to call home duing their time at camp, as it disrupts the camp experience and in almost all cases leads to heightened incidents of homesickness.
What happens if my daughter gets homesick?—The camp counselors are trained to help girls through their homesickness. If the child’s homesickness is particularly bad, the administrative staff will work with the girl and notify the parents to determine a plan of action.
Can I attend camp with my daughter?—We offer a Me and My Gal camp session that is specifically tailored to be the girl and a female adult figure; however, parents are not allowed to attend traditional camp sessions with their campers.
Can I help my camper set up her bunk?—When you get to camp, you will go through the check-in process, and then bring your girl to her counselors. They will engage the girls with the rest of the group and once all girls from the unit have arrived, they will go back together to set up their bunks. The counselors will help the girls to set up their bunks. Parents are not permitted past the check-in area for safety reasons.
Does my girl have to be a Girl Scout to attend camp?—No! Girls do not need to have previously been a Girl Scout to go to camp. There is an extra fee that is applied to the session balance to cover that charge.
Why does my camper need the Girl Health Examination Record and all of her forms turned in 3 weeks prior to her camp session?—Every camper must have their paperwork turned in three weeks prior to their camp session to ensure that it is processed and sent to their respective camp.
Why do I have to list Driver’s License numbers on my camper’s release form?—Campers will only be released to the contacts listed on their release form with a driver’s license number that matches the license they present to the camp staff at check-out.
What if my daughter takes daily medication?—Please continue campers normal medication schedule. Our healthcare staff will administer medication on the schedule that is provided.
What is Turtle Time?—Turtle Time is a period after lunch everyday where girls return to their unit to rest for an hour during the hottest part of the day.
What can I say to my camper to ensure a positive experience at camp?—“I am so excited about all the fun things you’ll be doing at camp! You will have to write me letters so that I can hear all about it!” “You are going to have so much fun, you won’t even have time to think about home!”

Written requests for a refund must be received by the council at least three weeks prior to the opening day of the session. A partial refund (less $100 cancellation fee) may be secured if the council receives a written certificate from a licensed M.D. stating she is unable to attend her camp session or if there is a family emergency.
No refund will be given if a camper is sent home due to unacceptable behavior or homesickness. Full refunds will only be issued for sessions canceled by the council.

Who are the camp counselors? Our counselors are selected based on their program skills, maturity, education, caring attitude, and experience with children. Counselors are primarily college students, both female and male, with male counselors housed in separate quarters. Program areas, such as ropes course, horses, swimming and boating, are directed by certified and trained staff. All of our staff must successfully complete pre-camp staff training, pass background screening and become members of Girl Scouts of the USA.
