Register to create a user account
All users need to register before placing orders within the CLASS system. However, you may search and browse for datasets in CLASS at anytime. To register click on the Register link from the home page. The minimum required fields include your name, e-mail address and password. Once you submit your information your user-id will appear near the top of the page. Please keep it handy for future logins.

Set up your user preferences (1)
At some point you may wish to set up your User Preferences . The link is found to the right as shown or at the bottom of all CLASS web pages. The User Preferences include: • Notification preferences • Delivery preferences • Data format preferences
for AVHRR and GOES data

Search for data – data description (1)
On the Search page each data Family contains a Data Description section and an expandable Details table.

Search for data – details table (2)
Here is the Details table expanded showing additional information and links to metadata and documentation.

Search for data - spatial search (3)
Below the data description and metadata table many searches include a map tool to perform spatial searches. You can draw your area of interest using your mouse. Alternatively, you can enter your boundary coordinates in the boxes to the right of the map tool.

Search for data – temporal search (4)
Enter date range and time range. If searching for a specific time each day select Each Day button as shown.
Select this for searching within a time interval for consecutive dates.

Search for data – product selection (5)
Then select datatypes with a checkmark. You can select a Node for polar-orbiting data.
Please note! You do not need to select S-NPP geolocation files. CLASS by default will package them with the data.

Search for data – initiating your search (6)
Now you are ready to place your search for actual datasets. At the bottom of each Search page there will be two types of searches . For option 1, clicking on the Search button will allow you to retrieve an inventory of files from which you can select a limited number of files to order and also the opportunity to view file level metadata . For option 2, clicking on the Quick Search & Order button will allow you to by-pass the inventory listings and to go directly to the Shopping Cart page to place your order. Option 2 will also enable you to place larger orders. Also, below the search buttons you will have an opportunity to save your search criteria to your local machine for future searches. This comes in handy for placing frequent orders of the same datatypes and spatial extents and satellite-ids. The final option includes searching on known values such as file name, granule id and orbit number. This tutorial will not explore this option for now.
Option 1
Option 2

Search Results page – inventory listing (1)
After clicking on the Search button (option 1) you will see a listing of datasets (files or granules) and other information. Ten datasets are dis-played at a time. The entire inventory listing can be printed from the link above the results table (see arrow).

Search Results page – Generate Map (2)
On searches performed on polar-orbiting datasets where a region of the globe was selected, the search results page will include a feature to view swaths on a map. The Generate Map button will allow you to see the geographic placement of each file in relation to your search area, which is highlighted in a dashed yellow line.

Search Results page – Detailed Display (3)
Clicking on the View Details column on the results page will give you more metadata on the particular file selected. From this page the file can be added to the shopping cart for ordering. In the case for AVHRR and GOES Imager datasets you can preview a set of browse images at the bottom of the Detailed Display page.

Search Results page – selecting files (4)
Once your selections are made as indicated by the check marks for each file in the Shopping Cart column, click on the Goto Cart button as shown.

Shopping Cart page (1)
Now you are ready to place your order on the Shopping Cart page. Remember that all orders placed in CLASS are free for electronic download. For some datasets, such as GOES-Imager data, users can select another output delivery format.

Shopping Cart page – Advanced Options (2)
Shopping Cart page with Advanced Options shown. For most S-NPP datasets the data will be packaged with geolocation files as the default option upon delivery. Also, similar S-NPP datatypes sharing the same geolocation file will be packaged together. This reduces redundancy and volume.

Shopping Cart page – CLASS order confirmation (3)
Success! Your order is placed and will be ready within 24-48 hours depending on the size of the order. You will receive a notification by e-mail with the details of your order. On the left side you may click on the Order Status link to check on the progress of your order. A second e-mail is issued when your order is ready with download instructions. Both ftp and http access are provided.

By clicking on the Quick Search & Order button on the Search page, you will be taken to the Shopping Cart page, by-passing the inventory results page. This action will enable you to place large orders more quickly. You will get a summary of the order, including number of files in the order, estimated volume (bytes), and your quick search criteria. See Levels of Access Services (next page) for more details on maximum file limits for large orders.
