1.0 Purpose This document describes the procedure to move the barrel-hexapod assembly laterally, on the Mayall ground floor, to transfer it from its storage position near the pier to its staging position under the dome crane hatch. This procedure will be performed only once.

2.0 Applicable To DESI installation.

3.0 Scope and Supporting Analysis This procedure describes a lateral move of barrel-hexapod assembly (“BHA”), taking place entirely within the ground floor garage of the Mayall building. This lateral move is necessary to shift the BHA from its storage location near the central pier to the center of the crane hatch, so that the BHA can be lifted by the dome crane. That lift is described in DESI-4120 (formerly DESI-3237).

Appendix A (Fermilab Engineering Note MD-ENG-565 – Stress Analysis of Square Support Rod) is an engineering note prepared by FNAL assessing the loads on, and safety factors in, the old and new square bars bolted to the BHA’s hexapod flange. These bars support the BHA in the blue support stand.

Appendix B (Fermilab Engineering Note MD-ENG-569 – DESI Barrel HMP – Three Lifting Hoist Rings Analysis) is an engineering note prepared by FNAL assessing the loads on, and safety factors in, the lifting features mounted to the BHA’s hexapod flange.

Appendix C (Fermilab ADDENDUM TO MD-ENG-569) is an addendum to Engineering Note MD-ENG-569 prepared by FNAL assessing the suitability of the manufacturer recommended torque on the M16 hoist rings.

Appendix D (Mounting Steps for DESI Barrel Square Support Rods) is a PowerPoint presentation detailing the mounting steps for the DESI barrel square support rods that are to replace the currently installed “blue bars”.

Appendix E (BARREL_HOIST RING Mounting steps 23 OCT 2018.docx) is a document that details the installation steps for the new hoist rings into the BHA’s hexapod flange.

8.0 Procedure This procedure starts with the Corrector Barrel (with no Shroud Survey Monuments installed) and the Hexapod in an assembled state with shipping covers on the Shroud and the AFT barrel section and in its storage location on the Mayall ground floor, near the outer wall of the telescope pier.

1. Corrector is supported in stand by three special-purpose blue-painted horizontal steel bars. These bars are secured to the top surface of the barrel’s hexapod mounting flange, using two ¾-10 Grade 5 bolts per bar (total of six bolts), each bolt torqued to 110ft-lbs dry (no lubricant). These bars rest in slots in blocks (two are “v-blocks”, one is rectangular in cross section) which are at the top of the three legs of the blue stand.

2. Each blue-painted steel bar also has installed in it a 6,500lb swivel hoist ring, installed by threading into a ¾-10 threaded hole in the blue bar, halfway between the two bolts that anchor the bar into the top of the hexapod mounting flange. THESE HOIST RINGS ARE NOT TO BE USED TO LIFT THE CORRECTOR ASSEMBLY. THE HOIST RINGS DESCRIBED IN THE FOLLOWING LINE ARE TO BE USED INSTEAD.

3. Install three McMaster Carr PN 3145T440 4175 lbf capacity swivel hoist rings in the locations described in Appendix B. Also refer to Appendix D Mounting Steps for DESI Barrel Square Support Rods and Appendix E BARREL_HOIST RING Mounting steps 23 OCT 2018.docx for additional information. These hoist rings should be unlubricated and be torqued to the manufacturer’s recommended torque value of 80 N-m or 59 ft-lbs per Appendix C.

4. Crane is just outside the Mayall garage. Garage door is fully up, high enough to clear the crane boom. Crane is running, warmed up and ready for service.

5. The Mayall 5T and 50T dome cranes are not used in this operation. They should have their hooks fully retracted to the stowed positions throughout. The dome can be rotated for other purposes without affecting what happens during this procedure, which takes place 120 feet below the dome at ground level.

6. The two 3T overhead cranes in the Mayall garage should have their hooks stowed in the “full up” position, and their trolleys parked at either end of their beams. It does not matter which end the trolleys are parked at, or that they be at the same end. The important point is that the trolleys should NOT be anywhere in the middles of their beams.

Task Leader is to initial each step as it is completed.

8.1 Position mobile crane partially inside garage with boom able to reach over corrector barrel without being fully extended. JHA#1 CB, CO, SA, SB – Be aware of your surroundings as the crane is being relocated into the garage area. Use spotters to assist signal person and crane operator while moving into garage through door and near beams.

8.2 Deploy crane outriggers on garage floor. JHA#2 SB, TH – Use caution while outriggers are being deployed and then after, while moving around the crane.

8.3 Position 3-pt beam (on furniture dolly) on garage floor, near corrector, within reach of crane hook.

8.4 Position crane hook over Hydra-set in its rolling stand. JHA#3 - Hard hats will be required while load is suspended and moving.

8.5 Lower crane hook close enough to attach Hydra-set to hook. JHA#4 CW, SB – Make sure signal person/spotters are in place while lowering the hook into place.

8.6 Secure Hydra-set to crane hook using one 17,000 lb alloy 7/8” shackle.

8.7 Raise hook to lift Hydra-set out of stand.

8.8 Roll empty Hydra-set stand out of the way and save for later use. JHA#5 SL – Use caution while crane is moving and never get under a suspended load.

8.9 Roll 3-pt beam on furniture dolly under hook with Hydra-set.

8.10 Lower hook until bottom eye on Hydra-set is within reach of 3-pt beam.

8.11 Secure Hydra-set to 3-pt beam using a 17,000lb 1” shackle.

8.12 Raise crane hook until 3-pt beam is about 4 feet above floor; hold hook.

8.13 Roll furniture dolly out of the way but have it ready for later use.

8.14 Attach one end of each webbing anchor sling to an end of the 3-pt beam, using one 6,500lb shackle for each sling-beam connection; leave other end of sling free. JHA#6 SB, SL – Use caution when attaching slings and shackle to make sure all are equal length.

Page 10: NOAO Doc# 2100 AD 015 0094 DESI DocDB#: DESI 4116 Hexapod ... · transfer).docx . 2100-AD-015-0094 Barrel-hexapod Lateral Transfer Procedure and JHA 2100-AD-015-0094.Docx Page 9 of

8.15 Raise crane hook until 3-pt beam is high enough to clear top of corrector barrel (min 8.5’ height for 7.5’ height of barrel in stand).

8.16 Swing and extend crane boom as needed to center hook with 3-pt beam over the corrector barrel. Take care to ensure that the free ends of the slings do not snag on any part of the corrector barrel or stand. If necessary, pause crane movement and position a lookout/guide on a stepladder to reach the sling that is in danger of snagging. JHA#7 CB, CW, SB – Be aware of crane boom movements around you and the equipment. Exercise standard ladder safety precautions to ensure ladder feet are stable and that ladder and occupant are not in path of moving equipment. CO, FB, SB.

Figure 2: Floor plan showing crane in position to put hook over center of BHA

8.17 Rig the 3-pt beam to the corrector barrel by securing the free end of each webbing sling, in a straight configuration, to one of the FNAL provided lift point blocks secured to the top surface of the BHA hexapod flange using one 6,500lb shackle for each sling-to-lift point connection.

8.18 Raise the crane hook until the slings begin to become taut.

8.19 Pause, check rigging, and adjust as needed.

8.20 Raise the crane hook further until the slings are taut but the load is not yet floating.

8.21 Pause, check rigging, and adjust as needed. Lower hook slightly if necessary to adjust.

8.22 Slowly raise the crane hook until the load is floating and continue raising slowly until the blue bars are clear of the tops of the v-blocks.

8.23 Pause and inspect rigging, and confirm adequate leveling of load.

Page 12: NOAO Doc# 2100 AD 015 0094 DESI DocDB#: DESI 4116 Hexapod ... · transfer).docx . 2100-AD-015-0094 Barrel-hexapod Lateral Transfer Procedure and JHA 2100-AD-015-0094.Docx Page 9 of

8.24 If inspection shows no problems, remove the bolts securing the v-block mounts to the tops of the legs of the blue stand. The v-blocks weigh more than 30lbs each, so two people are required for each leg: one person to remove the bolts and one person to hold the v-block and take its weight as the bolts are removed. JHA#8 CO, E, SB – Use caution while removing bolts, not to drop any. While holding up blocks, be aware of your body position so as to not have an ergonomic issue.

8.25 Station one lookout/guide person at each leg of the blue stand. The crane signaler should not be one of these three, but should be circling the stand communicating constantly with the three lookouts/guides about centering of the barrel and speed of the lift.

8.26 Slowly raise the crane hook while the three lookouts monitor the clearance between the barrel and the horizontal ring of the blue stand. The lookouts may gently push against the barrel during this process as needed to keep the barrel centered in the horizontal ring, until the front shroud clears the ring. JHA#9 – Be aware of pinch points.

8.27 After the shroud clears the ring, the three lookouts shift attention to the top of the blue stand legs, ensuring that there is even clearance between the hexapod bottom flange and the leg tops.

8.28 After the hexapod bottom flange clears the leg tops, continue lifting until the bottom of the front shroud clears the leg tops by at least 3”. Pause there. 8.28.1 NOTE: if there is not sufficient headroom to lift the BHA high enough to clear

the stand, hold the crane hook steady and remove the Northernmost leg of the stand (the leg on the right as viewed by the crane operator). Removing the stand leg requires removing the three ¾-10 bolts on the leg’s base, and the four ¾-10 bolts connect the leg to the horizontal blue ring in the stand.

Figure 4: floor plan showing crane in same position but with boom swung away from pier to move BHA out of the way

8.29 After personnel clear the path, swing the crane hook away from the blue stand towards the outer wall of the garage. 8.29.1 NOTE: if it was necessary to remove a leg from the blue stand as described in

Note 8.28.1, replace the leg at this point and refasten with three 3/4-10 bolts at the leg’s base and 4 ¾-10 bolts where the leg connects to the blue ring. Tighten all bolts to 70 ft-lbs of torque.

8.30 Lower the hook until the bottom of the front shroud is about 8” above the floor.

8.31 Pause the hook.

8.32 Position lumber cribbing pad under the front shroud.

8.33 Slowly lower the BHA using the Hydra-set until the front shroud is lightly making

contact with the cribbing as indicated by scale on Hydra-set, but placing no more than 500lbs of the BHA weight on the cribbing. JHA#10 CO, CW, SA, SB – Use caution while working around the BHA while suspended.

Page 14: NOAO Doc# 2100 AD 015 0094 DESI DocDB#: DESI 4116 Hexapod ... · transfer).docx . 2100-AD-015-0094 Barrel-hexapod Lateral Transfer Procedure and JHA 2100-AD-015-0094.Docx Page 9 of

8.34 Hold the hook and Hydra-set there, but keep the crane running and suspending the load. 8.34.1 Note: by design, the Crane requires hydraulic pressure to release the brake on

the cable drum. If the Crane engine stops or the Crane loses hydraulic pressure for any reason, the drum brake will automatically engage and lock the cable to maintain tension in the cable.

8.35 Unbolt and remove the existing blue bars presently attached to the BHA

hexapod flange, taking care not to dislodge or shake the BHA.

8.36 Install the replacement blue bars to be supplied by FNAL, using the same bolt holes as for the former blue bars and unused replacement bolts previously lubricated with Loctite LB 8017 Moly Dry Film Lubricant. Torque the bolts to 129 ft-lbs per Appendix A.

Figure 5: Floor plan showing movement of forklift in next step

8.37 Drive the forklift carefully around the suspended corrector, taking care to avoid any risk of contact with the BHA. JHA#11 SA, SB – Use caution while forklift is in use moving around people and equipment. Spotters for forklift driver must be aware of their surroundings while moving the fork truck.

8.38 Position the forklift to pick up the blue stand.

8.39 Raise the forklift forks to just below the horizontal ring of the blue stand.

8.40 Drive the forks under the ring.

8.41 Slowly lift the blue stand by the horizontal ring.

8.43 Drive the forklift towards the aluminizing area roll-up door.

8.44 Position the blue stand approximately under the center of the dome crane shaft.

8.45 Lower the blue stand to the floor.

8.46 Continue lowering the forks to disengage the forklift forks from the horizontal ring. JHA#12 SA, SB – Use caution while lowering stand back onto the floor. Be aware of trip hazards.

8.51 Drive the crane forward into the garage until the tip of the boom is horizontally clear of the innermost 3-ton overhead crane beam (i.e., further into the garage than that beam). JHA#13 CB, SA, SB, SL – Use caution as cranes moves to relocate.

8.52 Lower the outriggers. JHA#14 SB, TH – Use caution while outriggers are being deployed and then after, while moving around the crane.

8.53 Slowly raise the crane boom to the maximum extent allowed by the clearance under the 3-ton overhead crane beam.

8.54 Extend the boom until the corrector barrel is approximately centered over the blue stand. 8.54.1 NOTE: if the BHA cannot be raised high enough for the front shroud to clear

the tops of the legs on the blue stand, remove the stand leg nearest to the crane by removing the three ¾-10 bolts securing the bottom of the leg to the stand base, and removing the four ¾-10 bolts securing the leg to the horizontal ring.

8.55 Slowly lower the crane hook until the bottom of the front shroud is about 2” above the tops of the legs of the blue stand. Pause. JHA#15 SA, SB – As crane begins to lower load, be aware that you are out of the path of the load. Watch for pinch points as you begin to lower load.

8.56 Adjust barrel centering over the stand as needed by slowing swinging the boom left or right and slowly extending or retracting the boom.

8.57 Station one lookout/guide person at each leg of the blue stand. The crane signaler should not be one of these three, but should be circling the stand communicating constantly with the three lookouts/guides about centering of the barrel and speed of the lift.

8.58 Slowly lower the crane hook while the three lookouts maintain centering of the barrel between the legs of the blue stand. Ensure that the hexapod bottom flange clears all three legs and is well-centered between them as it clears. 8.58.1 NOTE: if it was necessary to remove a stand leg as described in Note 8.53.1,

pause the hook and replace the leg at this time. Refasten the legwith three 3/4-10 bolts at the leg’s base and 4 ¾-10 bolts where the leg connects to the blue ring. Tighten all bolts to 70 ft-lbs of torque.

8.59 After the hexapod bottom flange clears the leg tops, the lookouts shift their

attention to the clearance between the bottom of the front shroud and the horizontal ring. Ensure that the bottom of the front shroud clears the horizontal ring with equal clearance all around.

8.60 When the square bars are about 3” above the tops of the blue stand legs, pause the hook. Re-install the v-blocks and mounting brackets at the tops of the legs, using the bolts that go with the v-block mounting brackets. Use two people to start each v-block installation, one to hold the heavy v-block and one to install the bolts and nuts. Torque to bolts to the value yet to be defined by FNAL.

8.61 ____ If necessary, adjust the positions of the v-blocks on their mounts to ensure that

the inner edges of the v-blocks are flush with the inner edges of their mounting brackets, so that the square bars engage with the v-blocks over all or most of the depth of the v-block.

8.62 With the three lookouts/guides and the crane signaler back in position, slowly lower the corrector by using the “down” valve on the Hydra-set while the guides steady and center the load.

8.63 When the blue bars are in contact with the v-blocks, pause the hook and check that the barrel is well centered and the square bars are engaged with the v-blocks over most or all of the v-blocks’ depth. Resume slowly lowering the hook until the

slings are slack. JHA#16 SA, SB, SL – Use caution as load settles back into frame. Watch for pinch points if hands are on load.

8.64 Remove the 6,500lb shackles connecting the slings to the hoist rings on the Hexapod Mounting Flange.

8.65 Lift the crane hook until the slings are clear of the top of the corrector.

8.66 Retract the crane boom until the 3-pt beam is horizontally clear of the corrector barrel and blue stand (i.e., over the empty floor, and not the blue stand or barrel). JHA#17 – SA, SB – As boom and crane move in the garage, be aware of your surroundings and others along with other equipment that could be in its path.

8.67 Position the furniture dolly under the 3-pt beam. Lower the crane hook until the 3-pt beam is resting on the cart and the hook is slack. Pause the hook.

8.68 Remove the 17,000lb shackle to disconnect the 3-pt beam from the Hydraset. Leave the shackle connected to the 3-pt beam.

8.69 Move the furniture dolly and 3-pt beam out of the way, and position the Hydraset stand under the Hydraset.

8.70 Lower the crane hook until the Hydraset is sitting in its stand and the hook is slack.

8.71 Remove the 17,000lb alloy shackle to disconnect the Hydraset from the crane hook. Leave the shackle connected to the Hydraset.

8.72 Raise the hook fully.

8.73 Retract and lower the crane boom, fully in both cases.

8.74 Raise the crane outriggers

8.75 Turn and back the mobile crane to move it out of the garage.

8.76 Close the garage roll-up door.

8.77 Wheel the dolly with the 3-pt beam and the Hydraset and its cart to the south side of the corrector, within range of the dome crane and stage it for later use.

1 Open the can of Loctite LB 8017 Moly Dry Film Lubricant. Stir the lubricant until there are no solid residues and the lubricant is very uniform.

2 Clean bolt threads and tap holes or inserts. 3 Apply the lube to tap holes or inserts and to the bolt’s threads. Use a small paint brush to

apply the lube to the bolts and a small brush with perpendicular bristles to apply the lube to the inserts.

4 Wait for an hour for the lube to dry. 5 Insert and lightly tighten the bolt. Remove and re-insert bolt in order to spread the lube

uniformly. Torque bolt to desired value. Important: bolts will not achieve the correct preload unless the lube is evenly spread in both bolts and tap holes.

9.0 Procedure Review This procedure must be reviewed if changes are made to the Corrector Barrel/Hexapod Assembly that might affect this procedure.
