Scene 1

The boy goes to the kitchen looking for his mother.

Boy: Any food for me? (he asks rudely)

His mother walks away, leaving him alone in the kitchen. He takes a bite of the bun on the table and goes to his room.

Boy: “Where’s my towel?” (he shouts)

Nobody answers. It is all quiet! He is furious. Bang! He shuts the door behind him. Father knocks on the door. Tap! Tap!

Father : “Here’s your towel, sir. Would you like anything else, sir?”

Boy : “Oh! Oh!” Boy stands still. His face turns red. No words come out of his mouth. He looks like he has seen a ghost.

Page 33: Noble Tales Untold

Father: “Is that all, sir ?” (sarcastically)

Boy: “Oh Dad! Please don’t do this to me! (pleads the boy crying) “I know I am bad. Please forgive me!

The father invites the boy to sit next to him.

Father: I don’t keep ‘bad’ people in my house, son. You aren’t bad. It’s your temper which is bad.”

Boy: I’m scared, dad.”

Father: “Son, because of your temper, you have lost your friends, brothers, sisters and even your mom. If I lose my temper, I could punish you. Then you’ll run away from me, too.

Boy: “I’m sorry Dad. Would you please help me?”

Father: “Of course, but you’ve to promise that you really want to change.”

Father: “Go and take your bath. We’ll talk again after dinner.”

The family is gathered at the living room. The boy sits next to his mother. The old man comes in last. He is holding a box of nails and hammer in his hand.

Father: “Son, you had promised that you want to change. It’s not going to be easy.

Son: “A promise is a promise, Dad” (confidently)

Father: “Well, here’s a box of nails and a hammer. Every time you lose your temper, you must hammer a nail into the wooden fence.”

Boy: “Is that all?”

Father: “Yes”

Page 35: Noble Tales Untold

Post Reading Activities HOLES IN THE FENCE

Scene 3

After many weeks, the boy learns to control his anger. Finally, the day comes when the boy does not lose his temper at all. He feels proud and happy.

Boy: “Dad, I don’t need these nails anymore. I have friends around me now.”

Father: (smiles) “I’ll take back the nails but you’d still need the hammer.”

Boy: “Why?”

Father: “Now, that you are able to hold your temper, pull out one nail each day.”

Page 36: Noble Tales Untold

Post Reading Activities HOLES IN THE FENCE

Scene 4

The days passed and the boy was finally able to tell his father that all the nails were gone.

Father: “You have done well my son, but look at the holes in the fence. The fence will never be the same again. When you speak and act in anger, they leave scars just like the holes in the fence. It won’t matter how many times you say you are sorry, the wound is still there.”(The boy was full of remorse. He felt miserable.)

Father: “It’s okay son.” At your age, you don’t put scars on others yet, but if I don’t correct you now, you might hurt many people one day.”

Boy: : “ I have really learned my lesson, Dad. You’re the best dad in the world!”
