Frequently Asked Questions

Congratulations! You’ve finally decided to turn your basement into your

“dream” living space. Your family will enjoy their new game room, workout

room, office, movie theater—whatever you want the room to be!—for years

to come, and you may increase the value of your home in both tangible and

intangible ways.

The real question now is, “Who should I hire to finish my basement?”

This is a question that should not be taken lightly. When many people

think of basement finishing, their first thought is an arduous, months-long

process of measuring, cutting, and hammering 2 x 4s and hanging drywall.

The sheer enormity of the project is a major reason many people seem to

perpetually put off finishing their basement—or simply rule it out altogether.

Welcome to the world of the Owens Corning® Basement Finishing

System™. We offer a revolutionary way to quickly finish any basement that

avoids the usual pitfalls, hassles, problems, and red flags associated with this

kind of project. Instead of disrupting your household activities for months,

it only takes about two weeks. Instead of using lumber or drywall—which

can be a food source when mold is present—the Owens Corning® Basement

Finishing System™ uses walls that resist mold and mildew1, has a Lifetime

Limited Transferable Warranty as long as you home your home2, and creates

a beautifully finished basement!

Once You Learn the Advantages of Our Unique System, You’ll See That There’s Really No Comparison.

Finishing your basement is a major project—understanding the relative strengths and weaknesses of different ways of getting the job done is critical. Every aspect of The Owens Corning® Basement Finishing System™ was designed specifically for the basement environment. Please consider the following details as you make your decision:

1. Installed In About 2 Weeks, Instead of About 2 Months

Our system is installed quickly because the process and the nature of the materials being used require fewer labor hours. Consider this: A typical drywall installation could take about two months and can cause a huge mess. First they have to bring in a carpentry crew to frame the basement; then a drywall crew will hang, tape, mud, and sand the drywall. Other contractors may also be brought in to complete electric, HVAC, plumbing, and other work—which takes even more time.

Our process is simple: Our installers only need a few days to install the framing (metal, not wood—quicker, less messy), 1-2 days for the electrician to complete the electrical work, then a few more days for the original small crew to install the walls, arrange for inspections, install the ceiling grid, and perform a final walkthrough with the homeowner.

2. Mold & Mildew Resistant1

Basements naturally have more moisture than the rest of your home… plus the added possibility of leaks from outside or from plumbing. Using drywall or other traditional methods if moisture is present, can increase the likelihood of mold and mildew developing.

Our materials are breathable and resist mold & mildew1. The exterior walls are made out of 2.5” of rigid fiberglass, and are covered with a beautiful

finish. When moisture is present, the walls actually “breathe” and allow it to

pass through and dissipate in the air instead of trapping it, absorbing it, or

both.

3. Durable, Dent- and Stain-Resistant, and Virtually Maintenance-Free Walls

Depending on how you intend to use your basement, drywall could be a

major problem. If you’re thinking of a kid’s playroom—dents and holes are

an unfortunate reality. If you’re thinking of having a pool table—pool balls

and pool cues have a way of finding the walls. Plus, with drywall, picture

hanging and fixtures leave conspicuous dents and holes.

The Owens Corning® Basement Finishing System™ is dent resistant, mark

resistant, and won’t discolor over time. With our innovative Picture Hanging

Kits, you can hang as many pictures as you’d like without ever putting a

single hole in the wall.

4. Lifetime Limited Transferable Warranty2

The drywall typically used in basements generally has a 30 day warranty.

The Owens Corning® Basement Finishing System™ comes with a Lifetime

Limited Transferable Warranty for as long as you own your home, covers

any manufacturing product defects and can be transferred one time. A

warranty is only as good as the company that stands behind it.

5. Insulate Your Basement—Save On Energy Bills

Is it any wonder that a global leader in insulation would create the Basement

Finishing System™ that insulates your basement and contributes to energy

savings in your home? Our sturdy walls are 2.5” thick and made from world

famous Owens Corning insulation. The walls are thermally insulated to

reduce heat loss, which could lead to cost savings on your energy bills.

6. Removable Walls Allow Easy Access to Foundation

With drywall, it can be difficult to access your foundation walls. Basement foundation walls were simply not designed to be permanently covered up. First, there can be water problems in a basement caused by storms, foundation cracks, humidity, and indoor plumbing. If you finish a basement with drywall, there could be mold growing on the back side, and there may be no way to know. Also, drywall blocks access to address plumbing and electrical issues that can arise.

With the Owens Corning® Basement Finishing System™ walls are easily removable, which allows for access to the foundation. If there is ever any issue, simply remove the wall, address it, and put the wall back in place. This can prevent a small problem from becoming a major one.

7. Acoustic Insulation Keeps Basement Noise Downstairs Where It Belongs!

When you consider that the average basement size is 800 square feet, and it rests directly BELOW your entire ground level floor, it’s important to consider how to minimize the noise—not just within the room, but also the noise that can ruin your peace on the floor above. Our sound absorbing walls are 2.5” thick and are certified with a .95 Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC). That means it absorbs most of the sound it comes in contact with. Drywall tests at a .05 NRC, meaning it reflects most of the sound it comes in contact with, making the room noisy. Our beautiful drop ceiling was specifically designed for the Basement Finishing System™, and it absorbs and minimizes sound travelling up into your house, meaning you don’t have to hear the basement activities as much (TV, children playing, music, etc.) while you’re upstairs.

8. Installed By Certified, Trained Professionals

Installers of the Owens Corning® Basement Finishing System™ are required to be properly trained and certified following the systematic installation procedures developed by scientists at the Owens Corning Science and Technology Center in Granville, Ohio. Drywall installers may or may not be certified to any particular competency level—don’t take a chance.

9. Class A Fire Rating

Owens Corning® Basement Finishing System™ walls are Class A fire rated complying to the International Building Code (IBC) and the International Residential Code (IRC) requirements for interior wall finishes.

10. End Result… A Beautifully Finished Basement

Now you know the Owens Corning® Basement Finishing System™ was designed specifically for the basement environment with features like quick, clean (minimal dust compared to drywall) installation, mold & mildew resistance1, and removable walls just to name a few. our Basement Finishing System™ certified professionals located

Q. What advantages does it have over traditional drywall?A. Many. Drywall may dent easily, restricts access to your

can be a food source for mold, it is subject to mold and rot . The

Owens Corning® Basement Finishing System™ helps eliminate

these problems and others since its inorganic material is not a

food source for mold.

Q. Will it waterproof my basement?A. The Basement Finishing System™ walls are mold and mildew1

resistant to accommodate high-humidity environments, but

installed in less time and with less mess than traditional drywall.

An average basement can be completed in about 2 weeks.

foundation walls in the event of a pipe leak or electrical problem.

The Basement Finishing System™ provides easy access with

removable walls and trim components.

FAQ Q. Are the materials mold and mildew resistant?A. Because of the basement’s unique environment, water

damage and moisture are not uncommon and can lead to mold

and mildew growth. Exposure to mold and mildew can cause

upper respiratory illnesses. All materials used in the Basement

Finishing System™ are resistant to mold & mildew1.

Q. Has the product been independently tested?A. Yes. The Basement Finishing System™ has been tested by

certified labs for flammability, thermal, acoustical, and stability

performance as required for listing by International Code Council

Evaluation Service, Inc.™ and is building code compliant with the

International Residential Code®.

that delivers a .95 NRC for sound absorption. Providing good
