Saw You Never in the Twilight( E I G H T C H O R A L O R I S O N S )

H A RO L D F R I E D E L L

Cecil Frances Alexander

Saw you never in the twilight when the sun had left the skies,

up in heav’n the clear stars shiningthrough the gloom, like silver eyes.So of old the wise men watching,

saw a little stranger star, and they knew the King was given,

and they followed it from far.

Know ye not that lowly babywas the bright and morning Star?He who came to light the Gentiles

and the darkened isles afar. And we, too, may seek his cradle,

there our hearts’ best treasures bring.Love and faith and true devotionfor our Savior, God, and King.

In sweet rejoicingnow sing and be glad!

Our hearts’ joylies in the manger

and it shines like the sunin the mother’s lap.You are the Alphaand the Omega.

Magnificat in GC H A R L E S V I L L I E R S S TA N F O R D

Claudia Benack, Soprano

My soul doth magnify the Lord and my spirithath rejoiced in God my Savior.

For he hath regarded the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me and holy is his Name.

And his mercy is on them that fear him throughout all generations.He hath shewed strength with his arm;

He hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat

and hath exalted the humble and meek.He hath filled the hungry with good things

and the rich he hath sent empty away.He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant

Israel as he promised to our forefathers,Abraham and his seed forever.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be.

World without end, Amen.Mary’s Song, Luke 1:46-55

Tomorrow ShallBe My Dancing Day

A R R . B Y DAV I D W I L LC O C K STomorrow shall be my dancing day;I would my true love did so chance

To see the legend of my play,To call my true love to my dance.

Sing, oh! my love, oh! my love, my love, my love,This have I done for my true love.

Then was I born of a virgin pure;Of her I took fleshly substance. Thus was I knit to man’s nature

To call my true love to my dance.

In a manger laid, and wrapped I wasSo very poor, this was my chanceBetween an ox and a silly poor assTo call my true love to my dance.

The Three KingsH E A L E Y W I L L A N

“Who knocks tonight so late?” the weary porter said.

Three kings stood at the gateeach with a crown on head.

The serving man bowed down, the Inn was full, he knew.Said he “In all this town is no fit place for you”.

A light in the manger lit; there lay the Mother meek.

This place is fit. Here is the rest we seek.

Come, come. They loosed their latchet stringsso stood they all unshod.

“Come in, come in, ye kingsand kiss the feet of God.”

Can I not sing but ‘Hoy’,When the jolly shepherd made so much joy?

The shepherd upon a hill he sat;He had on him his tabard and his hat,

His tarbox, his pipe, and his flagat; His name was callèd Jolly Jolly Wat,

For he was a good herdés boy.Ut hoy!

For in his pipe he made so much joy.

The shepherd upon a hill was laid;His dog to his girdle was taid;

He had not slept but a little braid,But ‘Gloria in excelsis’ was to him said.

The shepherd said anon right,I will go see yon marvelous sight,

Whereas the angel singeth on hight,And the star that shineth so bright.

Now must I go where Christ was born.Farewell, I come again to mourn.

Dog keep well my sheep and corn,And warn well, warroke when I blow my horn.

Wat to Bethlem come was,He sweat he had gone faster than a pace,

He found Jesus in a simple place,Betwixt an ox and an ass.

Jesu, I offer thee my pipe,My skirt, my tarbox and my scrip.Home to my fellows will I skip,And also look unto my sheep.

Now may I well both hope and sing,For I have been at Christ’s bearing.

Home to my fellows now will I fling,Christ of Heav’n to his bliss us bring.

The Shepherd ’s StoryC L A R E N C E D I C K I N S O N

Nowell! Nowell! Sing we clear!Holpen are all folks on earth,Born is God’s son so dear.

To Bethlem did they go, the shepherds three,To see where it were so or no,

Whether Christ were born or no to set us free.Masters, in this hall, hear ye news today,

Brought over sea and ever you I pray. Then to Bethlem town did the shepherds go,

And in a sorry place heard the oxen low.Therein did they see a sweet and goodly May,And a fair old man; upon the straw she lay.

And a little child on her arm had she.“Wot ye who this is?” said the hinds to me.

Ox and ass him know kneeling on their knee.Wondrous joy had I this little babe to see. This is Christ the Lord, masters be ye glad!

Christmas is come in, and no folks should be sad.William Morris
