Welcome to Hope’s Newest Members

Eirik Collins

Eirik recently moved to Colorado in August.

He has lived in many states including Alaska,

Arizona, Maryland, Georgia and Virginia and

enjoys exploring new places. Eirik is a

software programmer and a proud father of

his 7-year-old daughter. He is excited to

make friends at Hope and to deepen his

spiritual practice.

Jen Sterba

Jen is also a recent transplant to Denver,

moving here a year ago from Arizona. She is

a web analyst in the DTC area and enjoys

spending time cuddling with her two dogs or

taking them on walks. She attended First

United Methodist Church in Arizona and is

also looking forward to making friends at

Hope.

Ray and Debby Price and Dee Dale

These three are also transplants to

Denver from Texas. They were very

involved in the UMC in Texas where

Ray taught Sunday school for 25 years.

He’s jumped right in and has already

started working with Kate teaching

classes on Sunday. Debbie has worked

as a licensed practicing counselor and

has been on the Texas state board for

Christian counseling. Rev. Dee Dale is

a retired MCC clergy woman where she

served for close to 30 years in

Louisville, Kentucky. They reside in

Parker.

Brad and Cinda Deats

The Deats’ are residents of Parker

(Franktown specifically). They followed

Pastor Claire here from Breckenridge where

they enjoy spending time relaxing in the

mountains. Both Brad and Cinda are retired

but enjoying doing volunteer work. Brad

volunteers with the police and fire

department. Cinda helps take care of her

mother and has already jumped in to help our

Hospitality team.

As the days grow short and the air cooler, I can’t help but start to get excited about the winter

season. For me it’s not the snow, or the recreation that comes with the winter months; but

instead it’s the theological story that we get to tell and sing year after year. It’s the promise that

God will show up in unexpected ways, teaching unexpected lessons giving us the promise that

we know to be true: Do not be afraid, God is with us.

There is nothing more familiar during the holidays than Christmas carols. I admittedly start

playing them on Thanksgiving Day and will play them around the clock until the first Sunday

after the new year. I just seem to never get enough. But it’s not just the lyrics of the songs, it’s

the promise of the words that is often embedded in the melody.

There’s something about singing the story of the birth of the Savior that speaks to your heart and soul. The scriptures tell us that

from the beginning, Christmas was filled with music. From Mary’s first hymn of praise, “My soul glorifies the Lord,” to the

chorus of Angels that sang, “Glory to God in the highest." During the holiday season, we invite you to sing the familiar words

and experience the message of Christmas through the carols. During this sermon series, we'll sing your favorite Christmas carols

and enjoy some of the most beautiful Christmas music to reflect upon the meaning of the story we sing about.

Our advent seasons will start off with one of my favorite events of the year: the children’s Christmas pageant. When the children

of Hope, in their own way, tell the story of the season through word, action, and song. I hope you will not miss this fun Sunday.

Then, each week, we will feature one hymn in particular to help us be reminded of the promise of the season, that God is with

us. All of this will build up to the Christmas Cantata, on December 16. Larry and Cheryl are working with the choir to present a

beautiful and profound story of the season through song. Christmas Eve will once again be a chance for us to gather and tell the

story we all love to tell. I hope you will join us for one of our four services: 3:00, 5:00, 7:00 & 11:00 p.m. There really is nothing

like lighting the candle, singing silent night, and leaving with the promise of the light of the world!

In the meantime, I hope you will join me in a pause to give thanks. Not only on Thanksgiving, but every day. Even in the worst

circumstances. I am sure that it will not take you long to realize that you, like me, are blessed beyond measure. And you, my

church, I count as one of those great blessings.

See you in church,

Pastor Claire

A Message from Pastor Claire’...

It is time to collect food for this year’s Food For All Thanksgiving Collection! Food will be collected at Hope from

November 4-18 and will be delivered on November 18 by our youth to Highlands UMC in Denver.

A cardboard “giving” tree will be located at the front of the church and will have colorful leaves that people can take with them.

Each leaf will have some food items listed on it for people to bring back to church. This tree will be up Sunday, October 28 and

can be found between the Welcome Center and front doors.

All food can be placed in the marked wooden bin by the front doors. If you bring gift cards, they should go in Pastor Nau’s

mailbox, not the bins as they are easily lost in the bins.

Hope members, please contact Pastor Nau if your family is in need of a Thanksgiving basket at [email protected].

Food For All Youth Sponsorship All youth and parents are invited to serve as we take donated food and create Thanksgiving baskets for families who

would not be able to have a complete Thanksgiving meal this year.

Youth will sort the food that is collected from Hope UMC and deliver it to Highlands United Methodist Church (3131 Osceola

St. Denver 80212). They will continue to sort and put together donation boxes to be delivered to families at the event. Sorting

event will be on Sunday, November 18 from 12:00-6:00 p.m. at Highlands UMC. Please contact Pastor Nau with any questions

at [email protected].

Advent Wreath & Craft Day

Join the Fellowship Group on Sunday, November 25 for our

annual Advent Wreath and Craft day. Fresh boxwood and

other greens will be available to make a beautiful Advent

wreath (pictured to the right) for your home. Instruction will

be provided to those who haven’t made one before. Craft

supplies are also available for adults and children. These make

great gifts for teachers. This event will start after the last

service in Fellowship Hall at 11:00 a.m. to have an early lunch

and then move on to craft and wreath making. A reservation

table will be available outside the kitchen door in the vestibule

on all the Sundays in November and of course the last Sunday,

the big day. Costs will be available at the reservation table.

We hope you can join us, last year the wreaths were

remarkably beautiful. Please contact Brenda Wright or Donna

Mitchell if you have any questions. 4

1 We will end our year-long commitment to human trafficking with

donations to a local group called Extended Hands of Hope. This is a local

organization that helps girls and young women who have been victims of

human trafficking. They have a residential facility that can house 5 girls, a

school, and a place where the girls can receive therapy. We have a list of their

greatest needs and will be collecting throughout Advent. Look for an online

sign-up coming soon as well as cards that you can take home that will be on

the windows in Fellowship Hall. We will collect items on the following three

days: December 16, 23 and 24. Contact Kate Stapleton at

[email protected] with questions.

Advent Season Mission Opportunities This year Hope will host three different Advent Season Mission Projects

2The Hope UMW Mitten Tree is back! We will have a

Christmas tree will be placed outside of the sanctuary near the

doors to the Memorial Garden. You can donate mittens, gloves,

hats, scarves, socks and diapers (size 1-5) during the month of

December. Contact Linda Ferrari at [email protected] with

questions.

3John Clark will be continuing his annual tradition of

collecting gifts for Joshua Station to help provide gifts for their

Christmas Store so that low-income families can have gifts for

their children. There are flyers posted in a folder on the

windows of Fellowship Hall. Gifts are due by December 2.

John will deliver the donations to Joshua Station so that they

have them by the opening day of their Christmas Store on December 8. Please note that gifts must be new and have an

original value of $20-$25 so that all of the gifts at the shop have similar value. Gifts can be dropped off in a wooden bin in

Fellowship Hall up until December 2. Contact John at [email protected] with any questions.

The Fourth Annual Community

Messiah Sing-Along! The Messiah Sing-Along will once again be hosted by Hope Church on

Friday, December 21, at 7:00 p.m. A suggested donation of $10 will again

help raise funds for the Village Resource Center in Greenwood Village.

Over the past three years, we have raised over $4,234 to help people pay

for medicine and doctor’s visits, rent and utility payments, food, clothing,

and other urgent needs for families and individuals. So, invite your family

and friends to be a part of this wonderful holiday concert and sing-along!

A reception will follow the concert.

UMW Sock Project Update

For the past 10 years November has been the month of the year where

UMW collects items for its Sock Project, a mission project, for the

Homeless Coalition. Unfortunately, where the socks are usually

donated, the Grant Avenue Street Reach, has closed it’s doors,

negating the opportunity for the homeless to have a place for a weekly

meal and other services. To remedy this Hope UMW has decided to

fill the socks we have on hand with toiletries and distribute them and

any extra items through the PB&J ministry program.

Many thanks to all who have donated toiletries, donated your time to

fill socks and helped distribute the 400-500 socks we have given the

past 10 years. Purchasing donuts on Sunday mornings helped UMW

purchase the socks. Blessings.

An Update on Hope’s Human Trafficking

Year-long Mission Project Because of generous donations, additional Restoration Bags for

trafficking victims have been sent to the FBI to distribute. A total of

93 Restoration Bags and $230, for mailing the bags to the FBI, have

all come from Hope!! Thank You!

Recently, we have been made aware of the need for Restoration Bags

for boys and children as well. As we get more information from

Restore Innocence Inc. 2019 projects will be announced.

Hope UMW invites all women to submit ideas for 2019 mission

projects for women, youth, and children. Join us on Tuesday,

November 13, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. to discuss ideas for

2019.

For more information on Hope’s UMW, please contact True Morgan

at [email protected].

Justice Run

We celebrate, as a whole church, on our wonderful

participation in this year’s Justice Run! We had 35

members on our Hope UMC team, which was the third

largest team in the race. Because of this we were able

to raise a total of about $1,200, which means $400 will

go to each of the three groups Hope was supporting:

ALIGHT, Truckers Against Trafficking, and Love

Made Claim. In addition, we had 3 members who won

medals for winning their age groups: Anne Dingle,

Morgan Skurky-Thomas, and Jordyn Stapleton. Thank

you Hope Church for your support in our year long

mission focus, Human Trafficking.

First round of checks to our non-profits are ready to

be mailed! $40,000 raised so far and the total is still

climbing. Thanks to everyone who partnered,

volunteered, sponsored, and participated- excited to

see what this $$$ can do to make a difference!

We have created a second composting bin at The Land! Help The Land by tossing your

plant-based food scraps, coffee grounds, and dye -free paper products into a Bio -Bag!

Composting at home is a great way to support The Land while reducing the amount of waste

that enters the landfill. The compost created will be used to amend the soil once we begin

planting our 2-acre edible labyrinth.

Things you can compost:

FOOD SCRAPS:

Coffee grounds, eggshells, fruits, and vegetables

(no citrus, dairy or meat products)

NON-RECYCLABLE PAPER

Coffee filters, facial tissue, brown paper bags, paper napkins, non -coated paper plates, paper towels, tea bags

YARD DEBRIS

Grass clippings, houseplants, leaves, plant trimmings, small branches

With so much development happening, road construction is

an ongoing issue to accessing The Land. Road closures are

regularly posted in our weekly e -newsletter as well as on our

Facebook page. It’s been a safe bet to plan on accessing

Powhaton Road from Jewell, as Alameda has been closed for

the past four months on and off. Remember, you will need to

drive past the “Road Closed to Thru Traffic” placed at

Powhaton Rd and Jewell to access The Land!

Safety Campaign Update

This summer we embarked on implementing our security plan for the overall church,

including allowing the doors to be secure during preschool hours.

Through your generous donations, totaling $65,391, we will be able to fully complete our safety campaign goals.

So, THANK YOU!

To date, we have:

✓ Installed a new access keypad for both the front entrance and the PDO entrance. This system is a state-of-the-art

programmable access control program that enables us to monitor and control all access to our facility.

✓ Installed an Aiphone intercom video system. This allows us to monitor and grant access to those who visit our church

during lockdown periods.

✓ Installed a DVR digital CCTV camera system. The new system gives us twice the coverage that we had prior to this

program.

✓ Added glass break detectors, motion detectors and exterior door sensors to complete a secure perimeter.

Overall, we have secured the perimeter of the facility, installed

numerous new cameras in critical uncovered areas and now have

controlled documented access. We still do have a few issues we are

addressing. We are in process in reconfiguring the handicap door system

and the spring will bring a new Fire Alarm system throughout the

church, including an AED on both levels of the building.

A huge thank you to Jim Drapal for working tirelessly and endlessly to

complete this program. We will continue to review and upgrade all our

current policies and processes to help assure we are providing the safest

facility possible.

If you have any questions, please contact Jim Drapal at [email protected].

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”

2 Corinthian 5:17

As we enter a new season we will encounter some changes. Change gives us an opportunity to try something new, have new

experiences, learn more and grow. Hope Youth has been so blessed by the leadership of Stacey Hilzer who sought to keep the

youth program going. We are so thankful for her love, gifts and graces she has shared with the whole body of Christ. The mantle

was passed on to Pastor Nau during a welcoming dinner September 23, 2018 during Sunday Youth Night. Parents and Youth

gathered to be in fellowship and learn more about Pastor Nau’s plans for the youth moving forward. We look onward as we

continue to learn and work on living more into our mission and growing in our faith weekly.

Sunday School

All youth are welcome to join us during Sunday School in a “What Would You Do” conversation with a focus on the message

and scripture that is delivered from the pulpit every week.

9:15 a.m. -9:45 a.m. - All youth will be led by Pastor Nau in the High School Youth room L27

10:15 - 11:00 a.m.- Middle School Youth will be led by different adult volunteers that will guide the youth in helping

them grow closer to God. Youth will meet in the Middle School Youth room L31

Sunday Youth Night

Every Sunday evening 5:30 p.m.-7:00 p.m. unless otherwise noted.

We started our first Sunday Youth Night with a working worship on September 30, 2018. Youth participated in worship by

creatively putting their ideas together to contribute to different elements of worship. They then executed their work during the

worship service that ended with singing Worship and Praise led by the Red Sea band.

Every month we will be focusing on the values of Hope UMC that will help us live into our mission, “Transforming the world

by making disciples of Jesus Christ.” The Youth already started living into our mission by participating in the Justice Run and

supporting our year-long mission focus of fighting against human trafficking.

Our Youth Call to Service Continues

We are in need of adults to help with Sunday

School, Youth Group, serve on the Youth

Ministry Team and give of your time & talents.

Please contact Pastor Nau if you are interested at

[email protected].

Will There Be a World Champion

in One of Our Hope Families?

Nancy Duncan would like to let Hope know that her brother, Dave Robinson (pictured left),

has qualified for the World Championships in Powerlifting! Dave took up lifting in his late

60’s and, at age 77 has recently set two American records qualifying him to complete in the

World Championships! Nancy and most of the family will be heading to Las Vegas to cheer

him on at the November 10 competition. Go Dave!!!

The Path Nothing in life is to be feared. It is only to be understood.

~ Marie Curie

This fall three Path groups met to grow in connection with their souls and relationships with God and each other. Each group

was different: one under the leadership of Pastor Stephanie Price, which focused on courage and what it means to live a life of

courage, using the book, The Courage Way - Leading and Living with Integrity by Shelly L. Francis. Clyde Oakley & Mary

Jane Harmony led a group on Sunday nights which also explored this theme and used two poems to guide their time together.

They used the Psalms as a time to reflect on the scripture as a way to grow in a deeper relationship with God. Pastor Claire led

a group on Wednesday mornings, which spent time exploring the Way of Blessedness, loosely following the Beatitudes. Each

unique group was formed and shaped by the experiences of others in their group and certainly were awakened to the presence

of God in the everyday moments of life. Be looking for information for our winter/spring Path groups soon!
