Nomads News Official Newsletter of Nomads Golf Club Perth Western Australia
Wow, I’m impressed......A record number of 52 Players turned up at the Gosnells
match. Well done Nomads Perth. Was it the later Tee-Off time? One wonders.
Given the fact that we are showing consistent growth we may expect bigger fields in
the future. Not so bad if you think about it. The more the merrier, I say.
Thanks to the efforts a few dedicated Nomads, I am pleased to report that our 1st ever
Sausage Sizzle, held on 19 June at Masters-Baldivis, was a tremendous success.
(See pg. 12) Now that this one is out of the way we look forward to hosting a few more
Sausage Sizzles during the course of the year, all in aid of WA Junior Golf
Development. Our target is $35000 and we envisage hosting a Junior Golf
Tournament at Secret Harbour during the first quarter of 2017.
The next “big event” on the calendar is the Nomads Perth Charity Day scheduled to be
held on Sunday 23 October 2016 at Secret Harbour – See Pg 10 for details.
The following weekend a fairly large contingent (13) of Perth Nomads will be winging
their way to Hope Island Resort near Brisbane to participate in the Australian Nationals
The “Fr-Editor would also like to take this opportunity to welcome on board the
following sponsors –
Studio B Manufacturing Jewellers
Kennect
Blu Grill (Woodlands)
WJ Dickason Electrical
Please support our sponsors in whichever way you can.
Until Next Month……………Happy Golfing

Captain’s Corner
Fellow Nomads, another month has come and gone and we very proudly
hosted 52 players at Gosnells on 12th June after having moved our regular
first Sunday of the month by a week to cater for the public holiday on the
6th. Well done to all the winners and a special thanks to all the guests that
joined us, some of which we look forward to receiving into the fold having
officially received their membership applications.
In terms of feedback on the pitch I made at the end of last year, I am
pleased to announce that our membership drive is moving in the right
direction. We currently have 58 members with a good couple in the
pipeline. I envisage that at the current rate of adoption and conversion we
should hit my target of 70 by the end of the year. Please remember that it is
through you word of mouth that we advertise our club so please keep
introducing people that you believe would become good nomads.
On the Junior Golf front I am pleased to say that our new portfolio allocated
to the Junior Vice Captain (Hector) has taken root. We have as mentioned
the first sausage sizzle that was held at Masters in Baldivis. This event was
successful even though we did make a few rookie mistakes. I believe that
our intent to move the next few sizzles to a Saturday and trying for later in
the rainy season when the weather warms, we will get greater results. My
very special thanks to some dedicated Nomads for their commitment of
time on the day. Just a reminder of the reason for choosing these types of
fund raisers as opposed to approaching the members, we aim to give each
and every Nomad the opportunity to partake by donating their time
without having to dig into our own pockets. I would hope that on advice of
the next event that our list of ‘volunteers’ will increase too.
With the weather conditions at this time of the year, it is perhaps apt to
remind all that we have some warm apparel on offer at really great prices
so please don’t hesitate to contact our Equipment Officer Garth for your
needs.
Hope Island draws ever nearer and I look forward to leading our band of 13
merry men into battle on the greens… Some of us eager beavers have
booked our flights, accommodation, phoned east coast mates and
arranged many ‘interesting’ outings. We have somewhat of a reputation to
uphold on the partying side at these events but remember gents, register
with Uber early to allow us to have fun but stay safe. Here’s hoping my
‘Sh1t’ or ‘Champagne’ golf is on one of its bubbly phases in October.
In closing gents, just a quick reminder that for those who have the financial
ability, we are still looking to get a few more sponsors through the door for
the club, remember, it is your club and as it grows in numbers, so the
opportunity to get support for your own businesses from fellow Nomads will
increase.
As a final reminder, the club will need to elect a new JVC at the end of the
year so please do start thinking of who from our membership you believe
would best serve our club. Nominations will open in November.
Keep on golfin……

RULES
CORNER by Neville Walker
.
EMBEDDED BALL
On the inside cover of the Rules of Golf there is a quote that says “Play the
ball as it lies, play the course as you find it, …..” However, now that there is a
possibility of rainy weather, it is good to know what the Rules and Decisions
say about an embedded ball.
At the courses we play we abide by the local rules shown on the scorecard
and the board normally situated outside the pro shop. Depending on the
condition of the course there may be a local rule that allows you to lift, clean
and place your ball on the fairway. In the case of an embedded ball there may
also be a local rule allowing you to take relief even though your ball is in the
rough.
There are two terms that concern where an embedded ball is situated:
“Through the Green” means the whole area of the course except
a) the teeing ground and putting green of the hole being played; and
b) all hazards on the course.
“Closely-mown area” means any area of the course including paths through
the rough cut to fairway height or less.
Rule 25-2 states that if a player’s ball is embedded (in its own pitch mark) in
any closely-mown area through the green, it may be lifted, cleaned and
dropped without penalty, as near as possible to the spot where it lay, but not
nearer the hole. Unless there is a local rule to cover the situation when your
ball is embedded in the rough, you must play it as it lies or take an unplayable
lie.
Handicapper’s
“Rantings”–
By Neville Walker
There are a number of points arising out of the scorecards from the Gosnells game…….
1. I would appreciate if you can help Michaela do her job of checking the
scorecards by first checking their accuracy before handing them in. We had
an unfortunate incident when the winner of the B division was initially
incorrect as both Player and Marker didn’t pick up the error on the scorecard.
2. The pressure of getting Prize-Giving started soon after the last group has
handed in their scorecards means that all irrelevant information on the
scorecard must not be shown.
I repeat again that if no score is made on the hole you should leave the
Gross column blank and show a 0 in the Points column. No dashes
etc. This makes checking faster.
(Fines will be applied for non-compliance as I spend at least 2 hours on
Monday entering hole by hole scores for every player on the Samson
software.)
3. It is also important that your print your name as Marker as your
initial/signature is not decipherable. This enables a quick cross checking of
scores if need be.
4. If you want to be rewarded for your Birdies you must see that your Marker
rings the Points column. It is not Michaela’s responsibility to check for birdies
that are not ringed.
5. We had 13 groups playing, but only 7 groups recorded their time.
Everyone in the remaining groups will be added to the Fines list for the
next game. (It will be up to the Captain to decide the fine as his group is one
of the defaulters)
6. The average time for the groups was 4:23.

Ellis, Hilton Jackson, Neil Currin, Adam and Fred Meijer.
We now look forward to doing follow-up Sausage Sizzles at Bunnings –

year.
GOLF QUIPS
golf.ing a duffer’s dictionary by Henry Beard & Roy McKie,
continued……..
birdie – A Mulligan, the best of one or more “practice swings”, and a
20-foot “gimme” putt.
bite – 1. Descriptive term for the way a ball “sucks back” after hitting
the green due to a powerful backspin applied by an expert golfer.
2. Identical term with a different meaning used to describe bad shots
hit by hackers which also “bite” and “suck”
blind hole – A hole whose green is not visible from the tee, thus
requiring a player to rely on senses other than sight, such as the sound
of an unseen golfer being struck by al ball, the smell of trouble, the
taste of fear, and the feel of the soft moss during a crawl through the
woods.
body English – Informal term for vigorous leaning or twisting movements
that players make to “persuade” a ball to go in the desired direction.
If these antics fail to have the intended effect, they are often followed
by a series of vulgar hand and arm motions known as body Spanish,
body French, or body Italian.
bogey –The number of strokes taken on a hole recorded by a golfer of
average skill and above-average honesty.
borrow – The amount of break in a putt, which can be decreased by
repeatedly lifting the ball from the green, marking it, and replacing it
closer to the holes on a process known as the “steal”
bounce – A sudden kick or rebound made by a ball that is either totally
and completely unfair or just exactly what you intended.
brassie – Old name for the 2-wood which often had a brass sole-plate.
The 3-wood was once known as a “spoon”, the 4-wood as a “baffle”
and the 7-iron as a “mashie-niblick”. A club wrapped around a tree is
a “smashie”. If it is flung into a water hazard, it is a “splashie”. If it has a
slippery grip, it is a “bashie”. And any club allegedly used to score a
hole-in-one is a “fibstick” if it’s and iron or a “fablespoon” if it’s a wood.
bunker – A hazard consisting of an area of ground along a fairway or
adjacent to a green from which soil has been removed and replaced
with something designed to trap golfers. If such a hazard occupies
more than 2000 square feet and traps golfers permanently, it is referred
to as a “condominium.
buried lie –Descriptive term for a ball sitting down so deeply in the
rough that it is almost impossible to get a shoe on it.
“C” next month’s episode………(couldn’t resist that one)
