By KAREN GREENWOOD2017 GMAR [email protected]
It’s amazing to see Realtors® who are tough competitors in the field come together at events like the Michigan Realtors® Annual Convention. I always learn so much from attending events like this! Being in Grand Rapids for the MR Convention, I’m reminded of a few very important thoughts.
First, autumn isn’t just synonymous with pumpkins and leaves, but our responsibility to be civically engaged by voting for our leaders in government and our profession!
In today’s hyper-sensitive social media world, we’re shamed into voting, shamed not to, and shamed for who we think is best choice. It’s a shame!
As members of GMAR, you have the right do your part in picking and choosing our leaders. Often times, the decision to run for office whether it be professional or public, is a difficult one. But I am excited to see so many talented Realtors® running for the 2018 GMAR Board of Directors.
There are two types of seats up for election to the GMAR Board of Directors: district seats and at-large seats. If you live in District 1, 5, or 7—you get to vote in those elections. All members get to vote for three candidates running for the at-large seats. Voting is open from October 4th to 18th.
Who will you support? Keep these things in mind: (1) choose the Realtor® who views our industry in similar ways as you do; (2) look for Realtors® who are engaged, whether it be in the transaction or as leaders in our association, or even the state and national levels; (3) be sure to read their resume and don’t hesitate to call them if you have questions!
Voting is important. As GMAR continues to work on our strategic goals, I wish your voice is heard through your district representative.
Also, to those Realtors® running for a seat on Board of Directors: If we have leadership that’s infectious, that sense of spirit will spread to all of our members. You’re in a position to be an infectious leader; strive to spread the excitement for learning and the genius in your own circle of influence. The cycle is an infectious one! This is a big commitment and we are excited you are stepping up to run! Thank you!
Who will you support?

Q: How long have you been a Realtor?A: 15 Years
Q: What led you to become a Realtor?A: I have had a few very interesting careers in my life including as a performer for Disney on Ice and Walt Disney Productions. When I came back
to Michigan from performing around the world I went to work for Dayton Hudson Corporation as a visual merchandise manager and furniture floor designer. I was then offered an opportunity to work with Dorothy Hamill and jumped at the chance, moving to San Francisco to design and run Dorothy Hamill Skating Centers.
I ended up moving back to Michigan again in 1996 to head up a family business that I sold in 2002. Finding myself semi-retired and virtually a stay-at-home dad, I decided to follow my partner Kevin into the business and attained my real estate license. My lifelong friend, Teri Spiro, suggested this would be a good fit for Kevin and me as we hoped for flexibility to raise our child and be a part of his life while earning an income.
Since then I have gone on to start my own real estate brokerage firm in Birmingham, volunteer for and lead many real estate organizations - including GMAR and WCR
- sit on local and national committees and build a business that is reflective of my own beliefs and integrity. I am now passionately dedicated to helping others achieve the ultimate dream of home ownership and truly love what I do as a REALTOR, entrepreneur, RPAC Investor, and industry leader.
Q: Why did you join the GMAR Board of Directors?A: I have risen to state leadership in WCR and felt it was time to give of my time and talents as I grow through our local, state, and national organizations. Being part of the leadership team of one of the largest associations in the country has been more fulfilling than I could have imagined.
Q: In your own words, what sets GMAR apart from competing associations?A: GMAR advocates, educates and cares for its members and the communities they love.
Q: Bonus Points: share a funny or heartwarming personal story with the members.A: The greatest thing that I have experienced as a GMAR Director is to witness the passion and commitment that comes from our staff as they guide and direct 8,000 REALTOR and Affiliate Members through their everyday business. That has been a tremendous reward and has made me truly appreciate that ongoing support.
Meet Your Board of DirectorsGMAR interviewed all 14 Board of Directors - the guiding force of GMAR. Here’s what they
said. Each month we’ll feature two, so check back to learn more about the folks in charge!

Change of the Season
Fall has arrived! To most that means the trees are changing colors, sweater weather, pumpkin spice lattes’, and cider mills. This change of seasons brings a different take for our staff and leadership. The Board of Directors elections are upon us, planning kicks into high gear for our GMAR Give Thanks Party, the State and National Conventions are fast approaching, and we’ll be performing our strategic planning for 2018.
As we wrap up 2017, one of our most important items of business is our Board of Directors elections. Voting begins October 4 and ends October 18. We have a full slate of candidates running this year. We encourage all of our members to participate in selecting the best choice for these positions. The Board of Directors is looking to continue to lead the industry in southeast Michigan with engaged members who volunteer their time, talents, and passion for the common good of our membership. All members are eligible to vote for At Large Director. Additionally, members in districts 1, 5, and 7 may vote in their respective district elections. You will be receiving an email with your NRDS number and a live link on October 4, and a few more times before the deadline of October 18. Every vote counts. Results will be announced at our annual General Membership Meeting on November 9th at The Westin in Southfield. Register now!
With Thanksgiving around the corner, we continue to “give thanks" to military veterans who have risked their lives to protect our country, freedom, and families. GMAR is committed to sponsoring 4 additional dogs that will be cared for and trained by the Guardian Angels Medical Service Dogs as part of our 5,5,5 program – 5 years, 5 dogs, 5 lives saved. Each dog is paired with a Michigan veteran in need at the end of their training.
Every day, 22 veterans commit suicide. For a veteran paired with a Guardian Angels Medical Service Dog that suicide rate drops to ZERO! It costs approximately $22,000 to train one of these dogs. Through generous contributions last year from you, our members, we were able to train Cobalt Realtor Blue this year, and pair him with a veteran in Holly, Michigan. We hope that you will continue to help save lives over the next 3 years. Proceeds from the GMAR Give Thanks Party will go towards training our next dog. Tickets are only $50 each. Bring your friends too! We have reserved the entire Punch Bowl Social in Detroit for a fun filled evening of drinks, food, great music, drawings, photo opportunities, and more. Last year everyone had a great time, and we can only anticipate that this year will be even better! So mark your calendars for Friday, November 10 and get your tickets now!
And last, but not least, Realtors across the state came together to attend the Michigan Realtors Convention in September. The speakers and presentations were top-notch and the networking opportunities endless. We are honored to have Sara Lipnitz serve as the 2018 President of the Michigan Realtors. What an accomplishment! We are very proud of her, and excited for her leadership in 2018.
The National Association of Realtors Conference & Expo is November 3-6 in Chicago. You don’t want to miss this important chance to network with peers form across the nation and learn from experts in various fields of real estate business, marketing, and technology. Learn more and register at nar.realtor/convention.

Doug Whitehouse of Berkshire Hathaway Home Service donated to Guardian Angels Medical Service Dogs at our GMAR Gives Thanks Party last November. With their generous contribution, GMAR was able to fully fund the training of a medical service dog, $22,000. The dog, named Cobalt Realtor® Blue, is being trained now. When he graduates later this year he will be paired with a Michigan Veteran.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Buyers Battle for Residential Real Estate as Inventory Remains Low, Prices High
Median home sale prices rise 6.2%, sales up 1.4% across MLS
August Monthly Highlights:• August tends to mark the waning of housing activity ahead of the school year. Not all buyers and sellers have
children, but there are enough parents that do not want to uproot their children during the school year to historically create a natural market cool down before any actual temperature change. Competition is expected to remain fierce for available listings. Savvy sellers and buyers know that deals can be made well into the school months, as household formations take on many shapes and sizes.
The prevailing trends lasted through summer. This was expected, since there have not been any major changes in the economy that would affect housing. Factors such as wage growth, unemployment and mortgage rates have allbeen stable. Every locality has its unique challenges, but the whole of residential real estate is in good shape. Recent manufacturing data is showing demand for housing construction materials and supplies, which may help liftthe ongoing low inventory situation in 2018.
• All single-family home sales for the month were up by 1.4% Y-O-Y, from 8,554 to 8,676. All MLS sales increased M-O-M from 7,903.
• The median sale price for All MLS sales increased by 6.2% Y-O-Y, from $160,000 to $169,900. The All MLS median sale price decreased M-O-M from $176,000.
• Average Days On-Market (DOM) for All MLS sales decreased by 9 days Y-O-Y, from 42 to 33. The ALL MLS avg. DOM stayed the same M-O-M.
• All MLS on-market listings (inventory) decreased by 27.7% Y-O-Y from 29,239 to 21,140. All MLS on-market listings increased M-O-M from 20,477.

ROBERT ZORZAN,Suburban Home Inspections LLC
A home inspection is more than just evaluating the house, it’s making sure the client is educated about the house – showing them where things are and how they work. I try to make the home inspection an enjoyable experience and ensure that the client does not leave the house with more questions than answers.
Client TestimonyRob Z of Suburban Home Inspections is the best of the best! I would not even consider
using another inspector after receiving such amazing service from Rob! He is extremely thorough and goes way beyond the call of duty. He goes over everything with you and makes sure you understand. He sends your written report to you extremely fast. It is very detailed, well laid out, and contains many pictures so you can clearly see what he is talking about. He really went out of his way in helping me. I cannot recommend him highly enough! If you need a home inspector, don't even hesitate to call Rob. You will not be sorry! As a new homeowner, I am quickly finding out that it can be hard to find trustworthy professionals. Suburban Home Inspections is a rare find. I will never use anyone else and I will recommend Rob Z to anyone and everyone! - Kristin G.
