Mentioned in this newsletter are many opportunities for students and parents to experience LHS to its fullest with the focus on the Music, Art, Physical Education, and Science Departments. The Musical, “Crazy for You”, was a huge success. The amount of work put in was obviously reflected in the final product. Attendance was high and we are confident that all were thoroughly delighted with the performance. It was a true community effort with students, staff and parents working together. All involved should be extremely proud of their accomplish- ments. Students in the music program are very busy preparing for the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) evaluations and spring concerts coming their way. In Art, the hallways of Lancaster are decorated with work from our students in conjunction with Leadership and the Art Department. We are exploring adding new curriculum for next year and teachers are constantly monitoring their instruction for the latest research based strategies. From flipping their classrooms to using technology to assess student learning, teachers have stayed on the cutting edge of technology using augmented reality, plickers, and the google classroom. AP PSYCHOLOGY WELCOMES BACK

IRAQ WAR VET & BUBBA! The AP Psychology classes would like to thank Mr. Chris Kreiger of WNY He-roes, for visiting Lancaster High School recently. Mr. Kreiger, who was accompanied by his service dog Bubba, discussed the use of dogs like his with over 80 Advanced Place-ment Psychology students. He was assisted by Lancaster Alumni, Miss Lynn Magistrale & Mrs. Sandy Lindaman. Mr. Kreiger discussed the benefits of having Bubba as a constant companion after surviving several different types of wounds he suffered in Iraq. The information he provided reflected many of the same topics covered in the course curriculum, and went a long way toward building a much better understanding of the role service dogs play in helping those in need. Mr. Kreiger’s professional and approachable attitude made the entire class respond positively and really enriched the classroom experience. He highlighted all that WNY Heroes does and elaborated on the organization’s efforts to help provide local, returning veterans with those special dogs. It’s hoped that he and Bubba will return to Lancaster in the future to reach even more students with another memorable experience.

TECHNOLOGY DEPT. NEWS

LMS TECH NIGHT Eighth-grade students at Lancaster Middle School had an opportunity to see what technology courses will be available to them in the coming school year and to complete a project with their parents. The Lancaster Middle School Tech Night, which was open to all current eighth-graders in the district, and took place on Thursday, January 28th, from 6 to 8:30pm at the Lancaster Middle School cafeteria as well as in the technology rooms.

Tickets were $5, which admitted one student and one adult, and were available from students’ technology teachers.

This is the second year that the event was held, and according to technology teacher, Phillip Streit, it is largely the same but offers important insight.

“This event exposed students to several courses we offer at the high school level and also gave them an opportunity to build a project alongside one of their parents while learning about technology and the resources offered

through Lancaster Schools”, he said.

According to Streit, there are roughly a dozen courses that freshmen have to choose from in Technology, which include classes offered through Project Lead the Way and in the trades. Project Lead the Way is one of several academies offered at the high school level in the Lancaster School District where students can select a field of study to put an additional emphasis on.

Among the different subjects are engineering, architecture, three-dimensional modeling, three-dimensional printing, construction, electricity, plumbing, robotics and media productions.

“These courses offer problem solving and time-management skills all through project based learning,” said Streit.

The event also included pizza, pop, a competition and prizes. A total of 40 tickets were available for the informational evening.
