Alumni Road: “Come Together – Right Now”t Homecoming this fall, GCC salutes The Beatles! Fifty years ago the Fab

Four, appeared live on “The Ed Sullivan Show,” drawing record audience of 73 million.

Now nearing our own 50th year, GCC is celebrating The Beatles 50th Anniversary during Homecoming with the theme “Alumni Road.” We’ve created our own version of the “Abbey Road” album cover featuring our own Fab Four, some of the longest-serving and most distinguished College employees. Here are their memories of The Beatles and GCC’s early days.

Ron Spiotta (aka George Harrison):

A Beatle’s favorite: “I’ll Follow the Sun”

Athletics Assistant Ron Spiotta came to GCC as a college freshman in 1973, nine years after The Beatles American debut. He was about to turn 14 when The Beatles hit the U.S. “I was more concerned with acne and ammo than music.” News of the Vietnam War dominated headlines. When he got to GCC he recalls partying at “Spring In” and table tennis in the game room. He’s worked at the College since 1981 and enjoyed portraying George Harrison in the Alumni Road photo shoot. “I enjoyed The Beatles music as it literally shaped my youth.”

Cliff Scutella (aka Paul McCartney):

A Beatle’s favorite: “I Want to Hold Your Hand”

When Student Activities Director Cliff Scutella thinks back to 1969, the year “Abbey Road” came out, Woodstock comes to mind. The three-day music festival has become an icon of 1960s hippie counterculture. Scutella walked a different line, joining the Navy after high school. A Beatle’s favorite: “Oh Darling”

Physics Professor Mike Crittenden is the longest serving full-time faculty member at GCC, starting at the College in 1981. When “Abbey Road” came out, 12 years prior to his arrival at GCC, Crittenden was on the edge of a major life change. Rick Dudkowski (aka John Lennon):

A Beatle’s favorite: “Come Together”

Sporting his own version of John Lennon’s white suit, Rick Dudkowski did indeed “nail” the outfit. Dudkowski teaches Fashion Merchandising Management and is the mastermind behind the hugely popular annual Spring Fashion Show. GCC is So Much More - to So Many I love Commencement! I love watching the students, smiling from ear-to-ear, marching to Pomp and Circustance, waving to their parents and friends, receiving their diplomas and heading out our doors to catch their dreams.

I also marvel at the diversity of our student body and alumni. This year, parents graduated with their children. One young man received his GCC diploma a month before earning his high school diploma. International students from around the globe grace our stage and many remain in the US to continue their education. We’re proud to give all of these individuals the tools and confidence to pursue their dreams and turn their aspirations into success.

Steve Tarbell and Larry Saupe are alumni who have realized their dreams and were inducted into the GCC Alumni Hall of Fame this spring. Each of them spoke about GCC professors who not only helped set them on a solid career path, but also taught them critical life lessons. Beyond classroom coursework, Steve’s criminal justice professor taught him the importance of treating others like you want to be treated, getting involved and volunteering, and being one of the problem solvers in your community.

Larry wasn’t interested in college after high school graduation. He enlisted in the Air Force, traveled overseas, but when he was ready to launch his college education, he began at GCC. Like all GCC graduates, Larry remembers the faculty commitment to students and how they helped ensure their students’ success. When asked if he had any recommended changes or improvements to a GCC education, he offered one suggestion in Economics 101. Though it was a great course, Larry thought the ROI (Return on Investment) lesson should include a picture of a GCC student’s chair - by far one of the best returns on investments they will ever experience!

We’ve got a terrific Homecoming planned for all of you this year! Among the new opportunities will be the “FUN-Raising Our Future” a 5K Run/Walk to benefit GCC Student Scholarships. The event promises an excellent time to come back to your alma mater to run or stroll around campus while helping future students gain a great education and secure their dreams. The complete Homecoming Schedule is on pages 5.

I look forward to seeing you September 26 and 27.

Lori’s Long-Lasting LeadershipWhen she enrolled at GCC in 2008, Lori Mould was ready for a fresh start. She’d been in a debilitating car accident that had left her unable to continue her work in construction.

Lori excelled as a non-traditional college student, earning scholarships and serving as an officer with GCC’s Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. She organized relief trips to help hurricane victims on Staten Island and in New Orleans. She won the Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence and graduated in 2011 with degrees in Fine Arts as well as Communications and Media Arts.

At Empire State College, Lori continues to be a leader among her peers. She

has become the first Empire State College student elected president of the SUNY Student Assembly. The SUNY Student Assembly is the official student governing body for the 465,000 SUNY students across 64 campuses and engages with the SUNY Board of Trustees in the process of shared governance.

As president of the Student Assembly, Lori serves as student trustee. Her term began June 1, 2014 and ends May 31, 2015.

Lori earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Art with a concentration in photojournalism from Empire State this spring. She also earned a second Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence. Congrats Lori!

On April 25, 2009, Matthew Smith ’09 was volunteering with GCC’s Student Safety Patrol providing security at “Recherche,” GCC’s 28th Annual Fashion Show. There he spotted Keera Eiffert ’10, who was volunteering as an usher. From across the Forum he knew right away he wanted to meet her. Standing at his position at the entrance just a few feet away from Keera, he wasn’t sure how to catch her attention since she seemed to not notice him. He gathered his courage and walked up to her and asked, “Can I borrow a program?”

Keera remembers that night like it was yesterday, and she actually did notice a man stealing glances at her all night. She thought it was humorous that he was pretending to look at the program for a reason to talk to her. “When we first met that night I thought, who is that security student who keeps looking at me, but has only said one sentence to me all night? He was shy but in a mysterious way and he intrigued me enough to walk over and start the conversation with him myself !” Keera said.

It truly was love at first sight. Fast forward five years – Mr. and Mrs. Smith will be celebrating their one year anniversary August 23, 2014! Another happy couple who met at GCC, continued their relationship off campus and are now “living happily ever after.”

Interestingly for the Smiths, “Rechereche” is a French word that means rare and exquisite, and without the Fashion Show, they probably would have never met. The coursework for their two majors, Criminal Justice and Fashion Merchandising, doesn’t have many

overlapping classes, so the Fashion Show was a special event and opportunity.

“We were so close to never meeting at all! I was originally not scheduled to help with the show but I volunteered at the last minute. In addition, Matt’s car broke down on the way to the show! He almost didn’t make it, but fate had more in store for us than those circumstances could prevent!”

The newlyweds have left their western New York roots, (Keera is from Cochocton and Matthew is from Buffalo), and recently relocated to the Dallas-Fort Worth area in Texas. Both GCC alumni have secured new jobs in their respective majors. Keera is the assistant manager at Chico’s and the youngest employee in the store, while Matthew is working in security for a great company.

As they approach their one year anniversary, Keera reflects on their wedding. “We had an amazing western themed wedding in Cohocton. My handsome groom was wearing his cowboy hat and I felt so beautiful in my beaded lace dress. We walked out of a cabin through saloon doors, down the aisle and shared our vows under a sunflower covered arbor!” Keera recalls. “We had the same vision for our wedding, and we also shared a dream of moving to Texas and starting our life here. We didn’t waste any time. Although we are happy to be Texans now we will always remember the special memories of College and we are grateful to GCC for bringing us together!”

The Many Hats of Lyndsey Oliver-Farewell

GCC’s Alumni Hall of Fame - Inductees for 2014

By day, Lyndsey Oliver-Farewell is a technical specialist in records management in GCC’s Records Office. Outside of the College, Lyndsey, who graduated from GCC in 2005 with a Business Administration degree, wears many other hats, including business owner, fitness instructor and new mother.

Lyndsey came to GCC as a student after graduating from Medina High School in 2003. “I chose GCC because I knew I would receive a quality education close to home,” she said. “I was a President’s Scholarship recipient which gave me the opportunity to earn my associate degree without needing student loans.” After earning that degree, she went on to the College at Brockport where she received a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management in 2007. In 2010, she earned a Master of Education in Higher Education Administration from the University at Buffalo.

Since then, her life has been a whirlwind of activity. She married Travis Farewell, and the two started a business, Sweet Pea’s Cupcakery Café on Jackson Street in Batavia in 2012. She did this after a weight loss journey during which she shed more than 150 pounds utilizing the exercise regimen of fitness guru Tony Horton. So impressed was Horton that he invited Lyndsey to do a 10-minute workout routine with him on the Dr. Oz Show in October 2011. She now teaches Turbo Kick classes.

Perhaps her most exciting adventure began in December 2013 when she gave birth to her first child, a little girl.

Through all of this Lyndsey has maintained her connection to GCC, appreciating what she learned as a student. “My courses helped me to develop my analytical skills and to become a more creative thinker. As a small business owner, I regularly utilize many of the skills I learned in my business and accounting courses.” During her student days, one of her fondest memories is working as a peer tutor at the Albion Campus Center. “My time as a peer tutor helped me to develop my career goals which ultimately lead me to my position today.” And now as a College employee, she is emphatic about GCC’s best kept secret. “The people! The faculty and staff at GCC are wonderful. They are truly focused on helping students succeed.”
