I am conscious of the number of new parents who may not be familiar with the bi-weekly testing process and reporting at Lagos Prep, I would therefore like to communicate this aspect of teaching and learning and also to extend this to illustrate how our Growth Mindset work with children fits in. ‘Non Sibi Sed Omnibus’

Friday 16th January 2015

Jue 2014

Hello, one of the questions I am often asked by parents is what they can do to help their children maintain some momentum with their studies during the holidays. While my detailed answers may differ for individual children, invariably my response will begin with Reading! Encouraging a life-long love of reading is one of the most valuable gifts we can give our children. Reading is at the heart of literacy and the words children encounter in their books contribute to extending the vocabulary that can be used in independent written work. As children progress through the Primary years a good knowledge of the British literary tradition will be essential in helping them to perform well in entrance exams to UK Independent Schools, if this is the route your are considering. In fact, feedback from the UK Independent School Admissions process indicates that it is in the area of Comprehension tests that many non-British children do not do themselves justice. Cultural references and some of the idiomatic language are missed, knowledge which wider reading will help to build. I have worked with Bonas McFarlane, the leading UK education consultants, to give our parents reading lists of novels which will be of help in this area.

Good Afternoon! The first bi-weekly test of the Lent Term will take place next week and we will text you when results are available the following week. Just a reminder that you can access your child’s results on the school website, using their unique identification number and password. Talent Hunt Programme Designer… Congratulations to Emma Pentcheva in Year 6 who won the competition to design this year’s Talent Hunt Programme. Selected by Ms Heideman, Emma’s design captures all the fun and variety of the competition. A reminder that the contest will begin at 12.00noon on Friday 23rd January, for anyone who would like to attend.

Congratulations! Well done to Tamilore Edun and Demilade Ajibola in Year 5 for qualifying for the Johns Hopkins Talented Youth Programme in the U.S.A. this summer. Both girls’ test scores were very impressive and Demilade will receive an Honors Award for her skills in the Verbal Reasoning examination, in which she scored in the 92nd percentile, for a gifted and talented peer group which is two years above her! Well done to both girls and we look forward to hearing about their experiences after the summer.

Year 8 Media Course The Director of Learning has been very impressed this week by work produced by Year 8 pupils who are currently developing their persuasive writing skills. They put their technical language work to the test by producing media communication promoting specific products and services. Their work is impactfully displayed in the Key Stage 3 corridor.

Recipe of the Week Inspired by several new families who have joined us from Indonesia, we bring you the country’s classic Chicken Satay dish for this week’s Recipe of the Week on the Lagos Prep school website. Delicious and fun to eat, a good idea for a half-term treat with a fresh salad?

Lent Term Clubs The Lent Term Club programme got underway this week and the school’s thanks to parents for taking the time to register their children and make payment before Clubs began. As you know we are a small Bursary & Administration team and your efforts help enormously with the smooth running of the Club Programme. Texts were sent to parents this week to remind you that today is the last day for Club enrollment, so we can finalise club lists. Here are just a handful of activities our children are able to enjoy…

Dental Hygiene in EYFS EYFS pupils have got off to a flying start in the Lent Term, with the theme of Dental Hygiene throughout the Key Stage this week. Teachers have planned each of the seven zones of learning around the theme and activities for our older EYFS children have included, writing sentences about healthy teeth and the job a dentist does. The children have enjoyed listening to stories about visits to the dentist and there have been practical demonstrations of effective teeth cleaning. Come and look at the healthy eating collages in the EYFS corridor!

Please note date changes to Sports’ Day, due to the

timing of the Elections.
