UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS

Certificate IV in English Proficiency

The University accepts students who successfully complete the TAFE SA Certificate IV in English Proficiency and recognises the equivalence of the program to IELTS scores for international applicants. TAFE SA advised the University that they have updated the Certificate IV in English Proficiency with slight changes to the structure of the course including the removal of one elective (Australian Society). The University will continue to accept students who have successfully completed the updated TAFE SA Certificate IV in English Proficiency, with effect from 1 January 2015.

Bachelor of Arts Bradford Foundation Studies Program

The University recognises a music specialisation pathway for the Bachelor of Arts Bradford Foundation Studies Program with effect from 1 January 2015. Applicants for transfer into the Bachelor of Music at the conclusion of the Foundation Studies Music Specialisation Program must meet all requirements of the Foundation Program and the usual audition via the Conservatorium of Music to determine their readiness to transfer from the Bachelor of Arts to the Bachelor of Music. Admission requirements (as set out in the Bradford proposal documentation) are: The same minimum academic and English language admissions criteria would apply as for other Foundation Studies students. In addition, the student’s suitability for undertaking music studies would need to be determined, with regard to:

knowledge of musical theory and other formal aspects; and

ability with their instrument/vocal specialisation. This would be determined by, respectively:

a written diagnostic test, designed by University Senior College academic staff in collaboration with the Elder Conservatorium and delivered by Bradford College representatives in secure environments; and

a video of a sample piece of music performed on the potential student’s instrument/vocal specialisation, assessed by the Elder Conservatorium.

In addition to meeting Foundation Studies course requirements, to obtain an offer for their Bachelor of Music, entry criteria specific for the Bachelor of Music would also apply. The student would undertake the usual performance audition at a time to be determined by the Elder Conservatorium, envisaged to occur towards the end of the Foundation Studies Program.

Nursing – Inherent requirements

The inherent requirements for nursing programs at the University of Adelaide help identify those skills and attributes that will enable a student to become a registered nurse. Nursing is a complex and demanding profession that requires an appropriate level of behavioural, cognitive and physical ability to ensure the delivery of safe and effective care. Nurses work closely with people at the most intimate and challenging stages of their lives and as such need to have insight to their own personal and professional capacity. The nursing programs which lead to registration require a high level of commitment to the substantial and compulsory clinical placement schedule and the high academic standard expected. Students will be required to attend placement experiences that may take place outside of the normal academic year and require attendance at metropolitan, rural and possibly remote locations. The School of Nursing encourages and supports diversity in its student group. In particular situations there may be limitations to a student’s capacity to meet the inherent requirements of the program. The School will endeavour to make responsible adjustments where appropriate, but it is important for students to understand that in some situations, no reasonable adjustments can be made that will ensure the inherent requirements of the program can be met. In such a circumstance the student will not be able to complete the program. Legal

Nursing students, who will be registered by the School of Nursing with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA), must fulfil a range of legislative requirements to enable the safe delivery of care. Nursing students will be exposed to a range of unexpected and emergency situations requiring personal resilience and a consistent and sustained level of physical and mental performance that supports an appropriate response to provide safe and effective care. For example students will need to:

cope with their emotions and behaviour effectively when dealing with individuals in the clinical setting

be able to provide a caring and therapeutic approach to the needs of all persons regardless of gender, race, sexuality and or religion

Communication is a fundamental and necessary aspect of nursing practice. Students must have the skills and ability to communicate precisely and safely and in a way that displays respect and empathy to others and develops trusting relationships. For example students would need to be able to:

use clear and precise English language speaking and listening skills

document observations clearly and unambiguously

listen clearly and communicate with people from a wide range of cultural backgrounds

read and analyse complex health related terms

recognise and respond appropriately to cues in the clinical environment. Nursing students must be able to think critically to analyse, synthesise and evaluate complex oral, written and visual information. This analysis will be used to solve problems, provide for clinical reasoning and enable the provision of timely and relevant interventions. For example students will require:

numeracy and literacy skills to perform accurate drug calculations

the ability to apply knowledge of anatomy and physiology to accurately measure and record observations of patients and symptoms

the ability to retain information, processes and procedures to provide a range of nursing interventions

the ability to apply knowledge of policy and procedures in the clinical setting. Sensory

Nursing students will need to be able to recognise and respond appropriately to non-verbal cues across all age ranges. Observational skills (vision, hearing, smell and tactile) are required as part of this program.
