vary. Tommy Johns went on to play for another 15 years after his surgery, earning over half of his 288 career wins after the surgery. For many patients though, it does not last for a long time. For 25 to 30 percent of athletes who get the surgery, it only lasts two years. And it can cut the careers of high school players short because it is does not last forever. Eighth and ninth graders who get the surgery are three times less likely to play baseball in college.

The American Journal of Sports Medicine records data on the surgery. Every year, the number of young people getting the surgery rises by 6%. More young people are getting injured playing baseball than ever before.

youth sports injurieson the RiseIn 1974, Tommy John was a Major League

Baseball player pitching for the Los Angeles Dodgers. It was the middle of an excellent season and he had a 13-3 record. Then, he damaged his left elbow, tearing its ligament. He thought he would never pitch again.

But Dr. Frank Jobe thought something different. He performed surgery on John, saving his pitching career. Today, doctors call this surgery the Tommy John surgery. A tendon from another part of the athlete’s body is used to repair or replace the torn part of the inner elbow.

The Tommy John Surgery

This illustration shows the anatomy of the ulnar collateral ligament (the thick triangular band) in a pitcher’s elbow. During Tommy John surgery (ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction surgery), the ligament in the elbow is replaced with either a tendon from elsewhere in the patient’s body or a tendon from donated tissue.

The surgery is a common for baseball players. About 25% of all Major League Baseball (MLB) pitchers have had the surgery. But it is not only MLB players that go under the knife. Actually, 15-19 years olds make up almost 60 percent of all Tommy John surgeries in the United States.

Tommy John himself is displeased that the surgery that bears his name is so popular. He

said, "When I had [the surgery] done in 1974, I didn't think it would be the epidemic it is right

now. It's absolutely inexcusable... You get a parent that sees a kid that has pretty good ability

and will hire coaches. They'll train year-round and then they'll wonder why their arm goes at

13 years old.”
