Saturday morning, August 6 at 11
a.m., a group of thirty creative
minds gathered at the CoLab for the
2nd Annual Design-A-Thon. Their task
seemed virtually impossible, but they
were undaunted. With backgrounds
in design, marketing, video editing,
photography, web development and
copywriting, the volunteers would spend
the next 24 hours making Safe Haven
Family Shelter’s wish list a reality.
Design-A-Thon was launched in 2010
when founders Ian Rhett and Jessica
Murray decided to tap the experience
and good will of local creative
professionals to help local non-profit
organizations. All day and through
the night, the self-proclaimed, “geeks
for good” worked in conjunction with
SHFS staff to expand and develop much
needed pieces. By 7 a.m., deliverables
began surfacing in the form of
brochures, websites and video. At 11
a.m., Sunday morning, 24 hours later,
that lofty wish list was completed.
“This is the power of Design-A-
Thon,” stated Joyce Lavery, Executive
Director. “Amid skepticism, we all
wondered how any group could, in
24 hours, produce all these materials
while capturing the spirit, stories and
strengths of SHFS. But they nailed it.
As we embark on our plans to increase
the number of families we serve,
new marketing materials will help us
communicate the needs and successes
in our programs.”
In total, the Design-A-Thon donated
around $60,000 in services. The
spirit of creativity, collaboration and
generosity were palpable throughout
the event, particularly in the final
moments when the group gathered
to see what they had collectively
accomplished. SHFS is to unveil the

Hike for the Homeless Update
Planning on coming to this year’s Hike for the Homeless? Make a
note on your calendar—the date has been changed to Saturday, November 5, at Edwin Warner Park picnic shelters 9 and 11. Registration begins at 8 a.m. with hikers hitting the trails at 9. To celebrate this year’s Hike, more than 100 people gathered at the Nashville Airport Marriott on August 25 for the Team Kickoff Reception. With amazing food and music, attendees learned how to form teams and participate in the 7th Annual Hike for the Homeless. More than twenty teams were formed on the spot and more are coming online each day. Have you signed up for the Hike yet? It is easy to do and takes less than five minutes. Visit our website, www.safehaven.org to start your team. Pick a name team name, recruit team members and set a fundraising goal. We are encouraging teams of 10 to raise $1000 (or $100 per person). Everyone who donates $25 or more will receive a hike t-shirt. Not sure how to get a team started? We can help. giving options to Silver, Gold,
Platinum and Diamond. Listed below
are the new levels.
Silver—$1,000 GiftSupport intake and assessment of
a family into the shelter during the
first two weeks of their stay
Gold—$3,000 GiftSupports a family’s stay in the shelter
for 45 days.
Platinum—$6,000 GiftSupports a family’s stay in the shelter
for 90 days.
Diamond--$10,000 GiftSupports a family in the Transitional
Living Program with continued case
management services for 12 months.

Safe Haven Family Shelter Staff Implements Circle Training
This year, Safe Haven Family
Shelter received a Partnership
Grant from Baptist Healing Trust
to continue to create an organization
that respects, trust, and honors our
volunteers, families and each other. Part
of this strategy included in bringing a
facilitated communication model called,
“Circle Training” to our work. Last fall, we
introduced our first Circle at our annual
staff retreat. How do we get nine diverse
individuals, all passionate, dedicated,
and hard-working, to understand each
other’s experiences and perspectives,
Vicki and I have been married for 27
years. We have three sons, Andy, Jimmy
and Sawyer, and recently became
grandparents to a beautiful baby boy,
Damien. The reason we volunteer at
Safe Haven Family Shelter is because it’s
unlike any other organization; the whole
family receives help. The unique strategy
of SHFS is a proven success. There was
a time in my life, if it had not been for
the safety net of my family, I would have
become homeless myself. I want to be a
part of that net for the families at SHFS.
I work for HCA and they encourage
all employees to become involved in
community service. I met Stefanie at an
agency fair and the rest is history. After a
couple of years, I invited my wife to join
and we have been staying overnight as a
couple ever since. There is one night that
specifically stands out in my mind about
and how will this make us better at our
jobs? For the first time perhaps, our
mighty staff saw each other as human
beings, not just the professional role we
play at work. We witnessed struggle,
joy and hope in each other’s eyes and
it confirmed what we all suspected.
Despite our differences, we are all at
SHFS because we care about this cause.
Our experience lives with us to this day.
We continue the monthly Circle sessions
as a place for reflection and self-care and
to learn to communicate with each other
in healthy ways. The work that we do
at SHFS is not easy. The unexpected
and sometimes
difficult work
of dealing
with families in
crisis is always
a challenge.

more difficult is
learning to take care of ourselves. To

families had moved
into a transitional
home and returned
to the shelter so the
parents could attend
the financial literacy
class. One of the
boys saw me and
ran up to give a
“Grandpa” hug. I
guess I got a little
choked up. Ever since then, the children
(and some staff) call me “Grandpa.” We
also enjoy volunteering at SHFS because
we have the opportunity to meet the
volunteers who bring the dinners
(which are always delicious) play games
and help the children with
their homework.

Staying In Touch Phyllis and her teenage son came to SHFS when they had nowhere else to turn. Like many of the client’s children, her son suf-fered from emotional health challenges. Through therapeutic services and partner-
ships with community resources, the programs at SHFS provided the resources and extensive case management services needed. After 3 months, they were able to move into their own apart-ment. Phyllis’ dream was to own her own business, and she has made it happen. She is able to support her family with her cleaning business and regularly volunteers. Giving Is LivingWe at Safe Haven Family Shelter would like to celebrate the life of an amazing advocate, dedicated volunteer and donor; Mrs. Anna Sternheimer. Anna passed away on June 6 at 102 years old. She always recognized the importance of giving back, and made a tremendous impact on SHFS during her life. She served on the Board of Directors and played a role in the construction of the emergency shelter location in 1991. Anna was instrumental in the Transitional Living Program, and served as Volunteer Coordinator for both shelter locations from 1994 until 2004, when she reached 95 years of age. Her steadfast volunteerism and outstanding service to SHFS was recognized by the Tennessee Titans and Bank of America. In her honor, SHFS will name the overnight room the Anna Sternheimer Room, complete with a plaque inscribed with her philosophy, “Giving is Living.” Her son Steve and daughter Bess have continued her legacy by making a generous contribution in her honor to the Guardian Angel Program. Anna lived life to the fullest and was an inspiration to all who knew her; we are so thankful
she was a part of our SHFS family.
