You may have heard the expression “Let me check my calendar”. For many people, everything revolves around

that calendar - that year of hours, days, weeks, and months. What kind of year is it? A (Gregorian) calendar

year? A fiscal year? An academic (school) year? A Liturgical year? I am not sure what kind of year the timing of

these newsletters revolves around, but according to my “calendar” it is time to write another column. As you

read through this newsletter, you will see that we are getting ready for another academic year and all the

possibilities that are available for so many people. We are all on a journey through life and that journey involves

learning. From parents being the primary educators of their children; to the Parish Staff providing the structure

or framework; to the countless volunteers who help execute our programs; to the Parishioners who join us in

praying for all to grow closer to God; it really does take a commitment from all of us to continue to respond to

our call to be disciples of Jesus Christ. I continue to give thanks to God for all who help in any way. As a Parish

each member can and should share in the call to proclaim God’s Message. That proclamation takes many forms

or ways and it all begins with our Baptism. Continue to pray that God enlighten you as to how you can help

whether in daily prayer, as a volunteer catechist or as a member of one of our parish councils or ministries, or

some other way. I have heard many people say “I am not qualified or don’t have any gifts.” There is a saying I

learned in Cursillo that can be a good response to this. “God does not only call the qualified; rather God qualifies

the called.” God calls all and helps us answer that call with what we need. Think about that and take it to prayer.

I am grateful for all your support of St. Mary Parish and School. See how God continues to Bless us and offer us

ways to grow. If you need to check your calendar again – keep this in mind. Our time here on earth is finite.

Why not live life to its fullness in God’s goodness. It starts with each second we are given life. God Bless.

Anchored in Faith—Navigating Today’s Minds—For Tomorrow’s World

Letter from the Pastor…

I wish to extend my sincere thanks to all who have supported the St. Mary School Annual Fund through your prayers and generous donations. Each day is truly a gift from God. When I see our students coming to school each day with an eagerness to learn and an excitement that early in the morning, I am grateful that we can continue to offer a quality Catholic Education for those who desire it. Through the generous donations to the Annual Fund, we can continue to offer the opportunity for our students to learn more about their faith and Our God who blesses us in more ways than we can ever know. Each day that we are blessed with that gift of life, we make choices. It may seem that some days those choices become more challenging or there are more demands on our time and talents. This is a reality that many face and I hear people say this quite a bit. I offer prayer and discernment as the way to face those challenges and know that we are doing as God has asked us. One of the Blessings of St. Mary School is that we can pray every day and our students attend Mass once a week. This helps them to learn how to face challenges and hopefully they will carry these lessons with them through life. Thanks again to the support from so many people through the Annual Fund, we can continue to help teach our young people how to face challenges and know God is with them to guide them each day.

Annual Fund Report Letter from the Principal……….

July 2018

Dear St. Mary School Annual Fund Supporters and Parishioners,

I extend my sincere thanks for the generosity to the 2017-2018 St. Mary School Annual Fund Campaign Supporters. Your prayers and gifts provide hope for a future Catholic Education here in Vermilion and make a profound impact towards Catholic education overall. This year our campaign theme was “Growing towards the light of God”. One of the ways that we encourage students to live and grow towards a relationship with God is by doing service for others and increase prayer. Students made and collected blankets for the homeless in Erie County. In the spring, the whole school took a field trip to the Sorrowful Mother Shrine and prayed the Stations of the Cross on Wednesday of Holy Week. These are only a few of the activities that support the everyday mission of living the gospel at St. Mary School. We also implemented a comprehensive and ambitious STEM Program this year. Students worked with the Ohio State Stone Lab and visited the laboratory in Port Clinton. The Annual Fund provides support for the school to continue the mission and provide students with the rigor and excellence in educational standards that St. Mary School has always maintained. Thanks to our generous supporters, the St. Mary School Annual Fund Campaign created $37,700 in gifts towards the 2017-2018 goals and school operations. The following goals were accomplished:

Preschool classroom updates Spanish instructor School Operations.

I appreciate all who were able to help or support the St. Mary School Annual Fund. It is a privilege to work with a school and parish community that values Catholic education and remain dedicated to its future. With grateful prayer,

Mrs. Barb Bialko

NEXT HIGHWAY PICK-UP:

This year’s highway pick-up has been very successful.

We had a record number of people come out to help us

on the given Saturdays. Our last two will be August 4th

(with rain on August 11) and October 6th (with rain date

on the 13th). Please consider joining us for these. We

meet at the Holiday Inn parking lot at 8:30am.

The August date is open to all the parish, the October date is sponsored by

the Social Concerns Committee. ANYONE is welcomed to join us for the

one hour of service to the church and to God’s earth. Bags, gloves, vests

are provided as well as delicious donuts and water after the work is done!!!

Come be part of us!!!

WE ARE LOOKING FOR YOU (OR SOMEONE YOU KNOW) Each year in August, we offer what we call “A No-Strings Attached Meeting” for anyone who is interested in joining our church. This can be for those who were baptized in another faith, who might have been baptized Catholic but have not practiced and want to get back into the church, or someone who has been in the church for a

while and would offer their services as a sponsor for someone who chooses to follow the Catholic Faith. It is for those who are over the age of 18. Please pass this information onto anyone you think might be interested in coming. This session will be on August 19th. It is at 6:30pm and is held in the Parish Library in the school. Pre-registration is not necessary but if you would like us to know that you are interested, please call Sr. Claudia at 440-967-8711. At this session, we will give you a brief outline of what the process will entail and give a schedule of the classes. We look forward to meeting you.

MEET YOUR PASTORAL COUNCIL CANDIDATES

BILL MALIN

Hello, my name is William (Bill) Malin. I have been married to the

love of my life, Robin, for 36 years and we have three adult sons:

Zac, Clay and Luke. Vermilion has been our home for over 25 years

and we have been active members of St. Mary’s since we moved

here. I am interested in becoming a member of St. Mary’s Pastoral

Council. I look forward to working with the other members to advise

Fr. Ron in ensuring the spiritual and pastoral vitality of our faith

community. I was a member of school council for two terms while

the boys were attending St. Mary School, one term in which I was

president. In addition, I was on the search committee for school principals and a member on

the parish finance for one term. After a long break I am hoping to become part of another

ministry. I previously worked at Discount Drug Mart for 25 years, semi-retiring in 2005.

Robin and I also owned and operated Red Clay on the River for almost 10 yrs. Currently, I

am the Vice President Of Operations for Schill Grounds Management overseeing the day to

day operations for our three Branches in Sandusky, North Ridgeville and Cleveland. In my

free time, you will see me riding bikes around town or walking the beach with Robin. We

enjoy spending as much time as we can with our sons—be it at home swimming, watching and

talking sports or planning a family vacation. We also enjoy spending time with our friends

playing the latest board or card games.

Voting will take place the weekend of August 11 and 12 at all Masses where you will have the opportunity to vote for two individuals to represent you on the Pastoral Council.

BETH SCHAFER

I have spent my life at St. Mary’s Church. I have received all of my

sacraments here. Proudly, St. Mary’s has been my church for almost

50 years! I was a student of St. Mary School, VHS and then Bowling

Green. My husband, Ken and I, were married here 27 years ago.

This church has been the building block of raising our five children:

Andrew, Hannah, Catherine, Abigail and Otto. It was my one wish to

raise my family in this fabulous parish community. At. St. Mary’s I

have been a part of EDGE, PSR, the Confirmation program, women’s

retreat and I am a Eucharistic Minister. I have had a desire to serve on

Pastoral Council for a while. I am grateful to be considered. The

prayer that I have and answer, YES, to serve our Lord Jesus Christ with the gifts that I have

received has prepared me for the next calling. I would be honored to represent our

parishioners and to serve on the Pastoral Council. Thank you for taking the time to briefly

getting to know me and God bless you!

RAY HOLLAND

I am retired from University Hospitals of Cleveland as the Director of Spiritual

Care for Elyria Medical Center. The chaplaincy experience included extensive

training in Clinical Pastoral Education received and shared at the Cleveland

Clinic and as a staff chaplain at Metro Health Medical Center. I also served in

parishes and hospitals as a priest of the Diocese of Cleveland for 23 years.

My wife of 23 years is Jackie Holland who teaches Urban Studies, Public

Administration and Women’s Studies of Lorain County Community College.

There is so much to admire about the vitality of the parish. There is a high level

of faith put into action with a focus on family life, formation of children and

teens, care of the sick, working collaboratively with churches for the good of the

community, quality liturgies and especially a pastoral team that is a great gift

to us all. It would be a privilege to be supportive of the Mission of St. Mary’s as a Council Member. I

am also a member of the Knights of Columbus.

COLLEEN RANSOM

My name is Colleen Ransom and my husband Dan and I just celebrated our 19th

wedding anniversary. We have four children: Colin 18, Gracie 16, Kyle 14 and

Cory 13. We have been members of St. Mary Parish for five years now. During

the past two years, I have served as a Core Leader for Life Teen and attended

the NCYC with our teens. I am also a High School Intervention Specialist at

Lorain High School. I have always felt a strong calling to serve the children of

our Lord and look for new ways to fulfill my calling. St. Mary Church has sup-

ported my family in so many ways during the past five years and I would like to

give back by serving as a member of the Pastoral Council serving all of you. It

would be my honor and privilege to serve you.

TOM BUTLER

I am Tom Butler. My wife Jean and our children Sean (11), Caroline (9) and

Beau(6) have been members of the parish since 2015. All three of the children

attend St. Mary’s School. I am active in a number of ministries within the Parish

Community. During the Mass, I Proclaim the Word as a Lector and also serve as

a Eucharistic and Report Minister. I served as a member of St. Mary School

Council since 2015 and as President of that body for the past year. During my

tenure on the council, I played an integral role in efforts to support St. Mary

School to include the Annual Fund, May Calendar Raffle and the

60th Anniversary Celebration Dinner. My faith compels me to perform the

corporal and spiritual works of mercy. I have given of my time and talents to

feed the hungry at Grace’s Kitchen and draw upon my considerable background in cybersecurity to

volunteer as the technology advisor to St. Mary School and Parish. This volunteering has saved the

parish/school over $20K annually. I have been a servant-leader in the United States Military for the

past 21 years. I enlisted in the Army in 1996, receiving my commission as an officer in 2003. In 2006,

I transitioned to the U.S. Air Force, where I currently hold the rank of Major. Currently I work for

Key Bank in Brooklyn , Ohio as a Security Operations Center Team Lead. I look forward to the

possibility of expanding my ministerial reach as a member of the St. Mary Pastoral Council

in 2018 and beyond.
