CAN acknowledges the Noongar people of the Bibbulmun nation as the traditional custodians of the lands on which we work and live. We pay our respects to Elders past and present and honour all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders as the first people of this nation. CAN is proud to work with people from all cultures, but we do so on the understanding of First Peoples, first.

Kalyakoorl Kwadja Be, Kalyakoorl Boorda Be. Always Was, Always Will Be.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are advised that this publication contains images and names of people who are now passed away.

P.1Ngaalang Moort: Noongar Lullabies FROM HOME

INTRODUCTION

Ngaalang Moort (Our Family) is a compilation of stunning lullabies created by Noongar families in 2020, when the world was turned on its head and we couldn’t all meet together. CAN took the program online and directly into people’s homes, where these talented participants joined facilitators Charmaine Councillor and Phil Bartlett to learn the basics of Noongar language and songwriting.

Once everyone had their song written and learnt, they recorded their vocals at home ready for final studio production by Charmaine, Phil and sound engineer / musician, Sean Lillico. These conditions make this album an even more remarkable achievement by everyone involved!

Lullabies is produced by CAN in collaboration with Noongar families and is supported through the Australian Government’s Indigenous Languages and Arts program and the Australia Council for the Arts.

These 15 songs reflect the personal experiences of the people involved. They are a celebration of moort (family), koort (heart), woonya (love) and are a legacy for all.

1. Kaya WelcomeSpoken by Margaret Drayton Key of E (Chords E A B)

Kaya wandjoo nidja Noongar boodja ngalak nyininy.Noonook kalyakoorl ngabala ngoonda nidja boodja.Welcome this is Noongar Country we are sitting on.You always stay safe on this country.

We hope you enjoy these lullabies in Noongar language, straight from the heart of Noongar Country.

Kalyakoorl Kwadja Be, Kalyakoorl Boorda Be.Always Was, Always Will Be.

The Noongar cultural protocols advises that a Welcome to Country can only be conducted by an Elder from within the 14 clan groups of the Noongar nation. However an Acknowledgement to Country can be spoken by anyone as a mark of respect to Noongar peoples, their land and their water.

The language spoken can be used as a guide to develop your own Welcome or Acknowledgement to Country.

MARGARET DRAYTONMy name is Margaret Drayton. I am a Nyoongar/Yamitji woman from the Yued, Yamitji and Wadjarri regions of Western Australia.

It was an inspiration being part of Ngaalang Moort and linking our Noongar language to music. Singing lullabies in Noongar makes learning our language easier for our grandchildren and future generations.

This welcome is dedicated to all Noongar Elders past and present for the contributions they made, are making and will continue to make in nurturing and teaching Noongar language and culture. Always was, always will be Noongar Boodja.

CHERIE SLATERI am a Whadjuk Ballardong / Badimia Yamatji woman living and working on Whadjuk country. This song, Nganyang Dambart (Star Song), has been inspired by all the groups of three in my life. I have three moorditj grandkids, three awesome kids, three amazing siblings and my grandmother was one of three. I seem to be surrounded by threes. This song is dedicated to my first born grandson Judj, who is now our own djinda in the sky. For as long as this song is sung my grandson is remembered.

CHARMAINE AND PHIL

CHARMAINE COUNCILLOR

Charmaine Councillor is a talented Noongar language facilitator from Bunbury. She is a brilliant musician and is the singer and guitarist of her band WARANGKA. Charmaine is also an author and artist of five children’s books in both Noongar and English and was a consultant and writer for children’s NITV program Waabiny Time. Her aspirations are to encourage her community to embrace and continue to revive and maintain Noongar Language for future generations.

“It’s just an amazing thing to be able to use an ancient language of our Noongar people and bring it to today’s era, and to teach people using song.

I think the privilege for me was to have someone else put their own voice to a song, as a clear representation of their family, their country, their clan. Their voices are so different. It gives an opportunity for people to express themselves in their own dialect, or in their own language.”

PHIL BARTLETT

Phil is an award winning singer songwriter. Known for his amazing musicianship, huge vocals and heart-felt, straight-from-the soul, performance style, Phil’s versatility has earned him a reputation across Australia as an all-round entertainer.Phil started working on the CAN’s Lullabies program in 2019 and has brought with him incredible musicianship and mentoring skills.

“Yes I helped write the songs and put the music together but for me it’s so much more. It’s the fact that no matter what now I am forever connected with each of you because we’ve done something together that’s pers onal and we’ve done something that tells a story about you.

To be able to create the music for some of these songs... I’ve given to you but you don’t realise what you’ve given back to me and for that I thank you. I thank you for allowing me to be part of this beautiful journey and to have met you all.”
