Nordic City Solutions is a public-private platform, facilitated by the five Nordic governments of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden through their Trade Promotion Organizations in North America.
The ambition of Nordic City Solutions is to connect Nordic experts in the realm of healthy, resilient and smart cities with project procurement opportunities in North American through the facilitation of a range of activities with Strategic Partners over the course of 2019 and 2020.
The following workshop is part of a Strategic Partnership with The City of Brampton and Morguard Developments Limited is based on the Nordic strengths around sustainability and upcoming project opportunities within Canada.

Brampton (Toronto)
The City of Brampton is a satellite city and part of the Greater Toronto Area (pop. 6.4 million). With a population of 593,000 (2016), and a growth rate of 22%, Brampton is experiencing significant growth as critical part of Canada’s most populated region.
In 2018, the City of Brampton completed a comprehensive public consultation process called the Brampton 2040 Vision which is now guiding the City forward in its ambitions to become a world class city.
Nordic City Solutions have a strategic partnership with the City of Brampton in order to share expertise in healthy, smart and resilient urban development.

Morguard own and operate the Bramalea City Centre shopping centre:
“Bramalea City Centre (BCC) is the dominant super regional shopping centre in Brampton, the fourth largest enclosed shopping centre in Ontario, and the seventh largest in Canada – and home to more than 300 stores and services. To remain competitive with the surrounding retail market and to meet the demands of the rapid population growth, Morguardundertook a 300,000 square foot expansion with an objective to consolidate area trade, improve operational efficiencies, and enhance the retail experience.”

Bramalea Nordic Urban LabIn 2018 the City of Brampton completed a comprehensive public consultation process for a new vision for the City.
Action 3-3 identifies the community of Bramalea as a key focus neighborhood for Brampton's 2040 Vision.
With bold leadership from the City, MorguardInvestments Limited, and the local community, the vision proposes to update the Bramaleaneighbourhood and Bramalea City Centre as "a model of the next generation of comfortable, sustainable living“.
The following collaboration is a response to feedback from the City of Brampton for a Nordic-focused workshop on a number of site-development themes as part of the Nordic City Solutions platform of experts.

Workshop Purpose Activity Outcome
Day 1:Setting the Brampton& BramaleaStage(March 26)
• To provide context and local history for project
• To frame and introduce stakeholders in project
• To present cultural and site specific information, including site visit to Bramalea
• Introductions• Brampton & Bramalea context and
site tour• Stakeholder introductions to local
partners to understand goals of project
• Networking Reception hosted by City of Brampton for Nordic partners (in partnership with Nordic TPOs)
• Nordic partners get understanding of site context and stakeholders
• Set the framework of what the goal of the project will be and how/why the strategy will be formed
Day 2: Bramaleathrough a Nordic Lens(March 27)
• To review the Bramalea site plan and project sustainability content through a Nordic lens with focus on blue-green connectivity
• To provide additional recommendations to Brampton / Morguard
Facilitated full-day workshop with Nordic partners on Bramalea project with experts in the following key areas: storm water management, transit-orienteddevelopment (active transportation, cycling infrastructure, multi-modal),lighting, pedestrian safety, architectural design and master planning, retail mixed-use, building energy efficiency and energy infrastructure.
• To provide Brampton and stakeholders ideas, inspiration and applied solutions for how to integrateNordic sustainability into the Bramalea site.
• To help provide Nordic perspective on Bramalea redevelopment for 2040 vision execution.
• Provide future business opportunityfor Nordic experts on Brampton and Morguard projects.

Breakout Session Themes in DetailEnergy Infrastructure The City of Brampton is working on Community Energy & Emissions Reduction Plan in partnership with a number of stakeholders. This breakout session will discuss how Nordic energy solutions could be integrated into the overall City energy needs and how those might tie into maximizing cost efficiencies and innovative solutions for the Bramalea site infrastructure.
Mixed-Use Site Solutions for BramaleaAs our landscapes are changing so are the ways people live, work and play. This breakout session will focus on Nordic examples of mixed-use solutions for Bramaleawith an emphasis on retail/office/residential, including examples of integrated transit-oriented development, public safety, active transportation and public amenities.
Energy Efficiency Innovation (Vertical development)Nordic construction produces some of the most efficient building systems in the world. This breakout session will focus on Nordic solutions for energy efficiency in buildings, including possibilities for existing building stock and new construction on the Bramaleasite.
Resiliency InfrastructureThe Bramalea site is part of a complex blue-green system within the Spring Creek watershed. As climate change challenges are compounded, innovative storm water management solutions are an increasing necessity. This breakout session will focus on Nordic solutions around stormwater management and connectivity to the surrounding natural heritage systems.
