7 NEWSLETTER Norma Male Ceremony
As many residents would be aware, Council Chambers is dedicated to former Town and Shire Clerk, Nor-ma Male BEM. Since the passing of Ms Male her family have donated some of her certificates, medals and significant memorabilia to Balranald Shire Council. On Friday 13 July 2018 Council hosted an official handover ceremony in which Ms Male’s family presented these items, and together with Councillors and the General Manager the display was opened to the public.
In attendance were Ms Male’s nephew Max, his wife Janette, and their son Anthony. Representatives from neighbouring shires, including the Mayors and General Managers from Murray River and Wentworth Shire Councils. Current and Former Councillors of our shire, locals and guests from far and wide travelled for the event to pay honour to Ms Male and to view the new display.
Pictured below are the items donated to Council. These items include such treasures as Ms Male’s British Empire Medal, her original position acceptance letter, her business card and her Lifetime Achievement Award.
For the opening ceremony these items were displayed on the table pictured below, however they will shortly be mounted behind glass in a permanent exhibition for all to see. Council is proud to house this feature in the prominently positioned new display cabinet in the foyer of Council’s Office.
Ms Male was the first woman to formally hold the office of Town Clerk permanently in Australia. She held 30 years of dedicated local government service to the communities of the Balranald Municipal Council and Balranald Shire Council as follows:
Town Clerk - Balranald Municipal Council 1944 - 1956
Shire Clerk - Balranald Shire Council 1957 - 1974
Norma Male had a massive impact on Balranald Community, her achievements for this township were many. To name a few, Ms Male was instrumental in the establishment of the Western Shires Dental Service, the Baby Health Centre, the Balranald Library and the development of the rural road network.
Council extends its sincere thanks to Ms Male’s family for their kind donation to our community. These items will be treasured as an important tribute to an amazing woman. Council encourages all residents and visitors to view the display.
Two year anniversary of Visit Balranald website
Council’s tourism website www.visitbalranald.com.au recently celebrated it’s second birthday. This website is a vital tool for the Shire’s promotion as it showcases and informs viewers from all over Australia, and the world, about the many wonderful things Balranald & Surrounds has to offer.
The Visit Balranald website was developed with the objective of promoting the Shire’s uniqueness “where the wetlands meets the outback”, and to promote the area as a destination rather than just a stop-over. It uses stunning photos to illustrate the beauty of the area and showcase all its wonders.
The Visit Balranald website keeps both locals and visitors informed as it is updated with upcoming events and status reports of road conditions and access to Mungo and Yanga National Parks. It is a valuable asset contributing to the growth in visitor numbers, as can be seen in the data collected by the staff at the Visitor Information Centre. More than ever the world is seen on a screen and many visitors to the Visitor Information Centre approach the staff with questions relating to specific locations and events they have found on the website, demonstrating the interest the website is generating and its translation to actual visits.
Recent data shows that in the month of May, typically a very quiet month in Balranald as the weather is becoming cold, miserable and sometimes wet, the Interpretive Pavilion counted 1695 visitors. A terrific achievement.
The tourism website has had 46,765 unique visitors since its launch, generating 102,907 page views.

Next Ordinary Meeting of Council
The next meeting will be on:
-Tuesday 21st August 2018-
I am pleased to report that the new Euston tree avenue has been planted replanting the trees that died last year.
On 3 July 2018 the General Manager, Michael Kitzelmann, the Director of Infrastructure & Development, André Pretorius, and myself attended the Local Government NSW (LGNSW) Regional Summit in Cobar.
It was a fruitful meeting as we joined with other representatives from our neighbouring Councils to collaborate on matters of importance to our region and raise these important issues with the President, board members and senior staff of LGNSW.
On 13 July 2018 I attended the Norma Male rededication ceremony. It gives me great pride to represent Balranald Shire Council at such an event, paying tribute to the wonderful woman Norma Male was and to reflect upon her great achievements.
I encourage all residents and visitors to drop into the foyer of the Shire office and view the new display in which the memorabilia kindly donated by her family is now housed.

Works around the Shire Capital works are continuing around the Shire. These include grid replacement on the Wooranbara-Corrong Road and Mildura Ivanhoe Roads under Roads to Recovery funding. Road construction is well advanced and sealing is likely to occur next week at the Clare-Mossgiel intersection. The Wool Track Project is progressing as several options are being considered and preliminary design drawings are being reviewed. Water main renewal and air scouring as part of Council’s Water Supply and Sewerage Program has progressed, currently documentation for these works is being prepared which will involve location and repair of valves, air scouring and renewal of old mains in both Euston and Balranald.
Stronger Country Communities Fund, Round One: Mainstreet Revitalisation
The second reference group workshop occurred on the 5 July 2018 in the Council Chambers. The workshop was productive and allowed minor refinement of the concept design. A listening post took place on Friday 6 July 2018 on Market Street. There was healthy feedback from the community and this was captured via feedback submission forms. Overall, the project was viewed favourably by the community. Information displays regarding the project have been set up in Council’s foyer and the Visitor Information Centre, all residents are encouraged to view the display.

Community News
Another Successful Pony Club Camp
Balranald Pony Club held another successful Camp last weekend 7-9th July 2018.
The annual camp sees a great influx of horse enthusiasts from across the region converge to the grounds for three days of socialisation and instruction, building knowledge and safety skills. Fifty five riders attended the popular event with abilities & ages ranging from five year olds on their first ponies to the more mature and experienced regular competitors.
The committee did a fantastic job of catering for the hungry tired campers serving up delicious meals and exceeding expectations with their entertainment options. Camp Karaoke on the Saturday night had the locals mixing with the riders on the microphone and Sunday the riders showcased to their peers and spectators their jumping talents in a mini competition under the lights. The action can be viewed on the Balranald Pony Club Facebook page.
The committee thanks the community members and businesses for their support, many have made donations and helped run the event for many years and their continued support is greatly appreciated. Next year’s event will be held again in the July holidays with all the community and visitors welcome to attend. New members and supporters are encouraged to attend our monthly rallies.
Balranald Pony Club would like to remind the community that Sunday 5 August they will be holding a “come and try” day and celebrating all horses birthday at the Pony Club grounds, O’Connor Street Balranald. For more information please contact Emma Scott or Rhani Neville.
