The bad news, themost recent semi-annual Remodelor-Move.com Remodel-ing Permit ActivityReport of 5,000 home-owners consideringremodeling shows a

20 percent decline inthe number of remod-eling permits issuedduring the first quar-ter of 2009, comparedto the same quarter in2008. The first brightspot for the homeremodeling industrycomes from the firstquarter 2009 report,which shows anincrease of five per-cent in the number ofhomeowners whostated they will proba-bly remodel in thenext 12 months.

This is the firstincrease reported in

this benchmark mea-sure of future remod-eling plans since2007, when more than90 percent of thehomeowners whowere thinking aboutremodeling reportedthey would probablyremodel in the next12 months. Since2007, this measure ofhomeowner senti-ment has fallen steadi-ly, first when homeprices leveled off,then when homeprices began todecline, and again fol-lowing the start of the

current recession.The second bright

spot for the homeremodeling industryis that the cost toremodel is now 20percent less than itwas in 2006, the resultof savings from a vari-ety of sources, includ-ing the economicstimulus package,reductions in pricesfor many materialsand home products,and lower bids fromcontractors as theycompete to keep theirwork crews busy.Details on these sav-
